• A known physical principle tells us that
the act of measuring a system
represents an alteration of it.
• The fact of designing a system involves
the transformation of a designer’s
mental model into something tangible
external to it.
• The observation of a problem with the
aim of solving it, involves the
assimilation of the problem to a mental
model of the solver.
• The Observer (designer or solver) is
part of the environment, but he is also a
part of the problem to be solved or
system design.

WHAT IS REALLY THE
SYSTEM ENVIRONMENT ?
Everything that is not part of the system
belongs to the environment
Thus, SYSTEM ENVIRONMENT, or System Context, it may
encompasses:
- Space Environment
- Temporary Environment
- Social Environment
- OBSERVER (System Designer or Problem Solver)
Cognitive Environment.

IMPORTANCE OF THE ENVIRONMENT
11
The ENVIRONMENT is as important as the system designing,
or the problem to solve, because it helps the OBSERVER
(designer or solver) to understand fully the problem to be
solved or the functions and features we expect from the
system design:
• To full appreciate the creative challenge, problem
understanding or system design.
• To good information research and its comprehension.
• To be aware of the distortions produced by the
OBSERVER perception.

PERCEPTION is a meeting point between the observer
and the observed. We can not speak of an outside
observer because there is always some degree of
interaction between to look and the looked (observed)
object.
Our brain does not see the world as it is, but as it was
useful for us in the past and, therefore, all is seen
under the most appropriate way for our survival.

be possible to summarize all the above
considerations in a mathematical
expression that allows us to model

SYSTEM VS. ENVIRONMENT, A MATH CONJECTURE
THAT CAN HELP CREATIVE DESIGNERS
The Philosopher Scientist Dr. Jorge Wagensberg, in his book
"Ideas for the Impure Imagination", suggests that from the
thermodynamics of irreversible processes and from the information
theory can be obtained a basic mathematical identity presented
with the following statement:
The complexity of a system plus its
ability to anticípate to the environment,
equals the environmental uncertainty
plus the impact of the system on the
environment.

SYSTEM vs. SYSTEM-ENVIRONMENT CONJECTURE
Cs = Complexity of a system
As = Adaptability and Ability to Anticipate of the system
towards system environment
Ue = Uncertainty in the System-Environment
Se = Sensitivity of the System-Environment towards System.
Impact.
30
Personally I think we can generalize the identity of Dr. Wagensberg expanding
the anticipation concept with the adaptation concept, and the impact concept
with the sensitivity concept, thus we can propose the following identity as a
mathematical conjecture:
Cs + As Ue + Se

SOME CONSIDERATIONS ABOUT THE SYSTEM
TO SYSTEM-ENVIRONMENT
IDENTITY CONJECTURE
• Probably we can find high degree complexity in the systems called
Complex Adaptive Systems (CAS). They are complex in that they are
diverse and made up of multiple interconnected elements and adaptive in
that they have the capacity to change and learn from experience.
• Adaptability is the ability to change (or be
changed) to fit changed circumstances. It
also means: flexibility, versatility,
resilience, variability, convertibility,
plasticity, malleability, pliability,
changeability, pliancy, adjustability,
compliancy, modifiability, adaptableness,
alterability, …

A complex system is the
aggregation, linear and
nonlinear, of uncountably
many simpler systems.
This is the essence of
complexity.

Considerations about the System
to System-Environment
Identity Conjecture
• Uncertainty means a situation in which something is not known, or something
that is not known or certain:
• Uncertainty is a natural concept, and
our mind will never be able to handle all
the information about a given
environment, and this information
doesn’t exists, nor can limit it to a
specific time.
• In artificial environments created by
man: legal, social, organizational, etc.
Good regulation (laws) or good
strategic plans can reduce the
uncertainty of these environments

• Sensitivity is the degree of susceptibility to damage or harm from changes in
the environment. It means also the degree of awareness and responsiveness
to internal and external changes, challenges, or demands. In maths the
concept means: Degree of change in a dependent variable in response to a
change in an independent variable on which it is dependent.
• In order to estimate the Sensitivity of the System-Environment to the
Systems evolution, changes or adaptability, we need good information.

• When there are low uncertainty environments, stable environments,
systems may become specialized. But in unstable, or uncertainty
environments, systems must be adaptive, flexible, general purpose.
• The old adage: “If it works do not touch”, ceases to have effect.
The new consideration should be: “If it works and you see that the
environment starts to change, you have to start thinking about change,
to evolve and adapt or, in order to survive, your system complexity will
increase”.
• The most immediate way to increase the complexity of a system is to
increase its volume. What is happening with companies in the current
economic environment ?: Mergers, takeovers, holdings building ..., they
are increasing volume. Several ones try to adapt and anticipate.

WHY THE SYSTEM TO SYSTEM ENVIRONMENT IDENTITY
CONJECTURE IS IMPORTANT FOR CREATIVE PEOPLE ?
BECAUSE
In addition to help them to understand
the challenge, if CREATIVE PEOPLE, at
work attempt to take into account the
system environment Identity Conjecture,
in a straightforward and subconsciously
manner, they will be considering the
overall universe in which his work is
going to act, and therefore they designs
will be more complete, more integrated,
overall.
Then: the best possible.

ENVIRONMENT, A MATH CONJECTURE THAT CAN HELP CREATIVE DESIGNERS ENVIRONMENT SYSTEM OBSERVER • A known physical principle tells us that the act of measuring a system represents an alteration of it. • The fact of designing a system involves the transformation of a designer’s mental model into something tangible external to it. • The observation of a problem with the aim of solving it, involves the assimilation of the problem to a mental model of the solver. • The Observer (designer or solver) is part of the environment, but he is also a part of the problem to be solved or system design.

  • 27. 01/06/2016 Antoni Elias Fusté 2015 September SYSTEM VS. ENVIRONMENT, A MATH CONJECTURE THAT CAN HELP CREATIVE DESIGNERS 27 PERCEPTION is a meeting point between the observer and the observed. We can not speak of an outside observer because there is always some degree of interaction between to look and the looked (observed) object. Our brain does not see the world as it is, but as it was useful for us in the past and, therefore, all is seen under the most appropriate way for our survival. Tusquets Editores, Colección Metatemas. Barcelona 1998 ISBN: 83-8410-595-0 At this point, we wonder whether it would be possible to summarize all the above considerations in a mathematical expression that allows us to model behaviours and all the relationships between systems and their environment. maybe we can find the answer in this book
  • 29. 01/06/2016 Antoni Elias Fusté 2015 September SYSTEM VS. ENVIRONMENT, A MATH CONJECTURE THAT CAN HELP CREATIVE DESIGNERS The Philosopher Scientist Dr. Jorge Wagensberg, in his book "Ideas for the Impure Imagination", suggests that from the thermodynamics of irreversible processes and from the information theory can be obtained a basic mathematical identity presented with the following statement: The complexity of a system plus its ability to anticípate to the environment, equals the environmental uncertainty plus the impact of the system on the environment.
  • 30. 01/06/2016 Antoni Elias Fusté 2015 September SYSTEM VS. ENVIRONMENT, A MATH CONJECTURE THAT CAN HELP CREATIVE DESIGNERS SYSTEM vs. SYSTEM-ENVIRONMENT CONJECTURE Cs = Complexity of a system As = Adaptability and Ability to Anticipate of the system towards system environment Ue = Uncertainty in the System-Environment Se = Sensitivity of the System-Environment towards System. Impact. 30 Personally I think we can generalize the identity of Dr. Wagensberg expanding the anticipation concept with the adaptation concept, and the impact concept with the sensitivity concept, thus we can propose the following identity as a mathematical conjecture: Cs + As Ue + Se
  • 31. 01/06/2016 Antoni Elias Fusté 2015 September SYSTEM VS. ENVIRONMENT, A MATH CONJECTURE THAT CAN HELP CREATIVE DESIGNERS SOME CONSIDERATIONS ABOUT THE SYSTEM TO SYSTEM-ENVIRONMENT IDENTITY CONJECTURE • Probably we can find high degree complexity in the systems called Complex Adaptive Systems (CAS). They are complex in that they are diverse and made up of multiple interconnected elements and adaptive in that they have the capacity to change and learn from experience. • Adaptability is the ability to change (or be changed) to fit changed circumstances. It also means: flexibility, versatility, resilience, variability, convertibility, plasticity, malleability, pliability, changeability, pliancy, adjustability, compliancy, modifiability, adaptableness, alterability, …
  • 32. 01/06/2016 Antoni Elias Fusté 2015 September SYSTEM VS. ENVIRONMENT, A MATH CONJECTURE THAT CAN HELP CREATIVE DESIGNERS A complex system is the aggregation, linear and nonlinear, of uncountably many simpler systems. This is the essence of complexity.

  • 36. 01/06/2016 Antoni Elias Fusté 2015 September SYSTEM VS. ENVIRONMENT, A MATH CONJECTURE THAT CAN HELP CREATIVE DESIGNERS Considerations about the System to System-Environment Identity Conjecture • Uncertainty means a situation in which something is not known, or something that is not known or certain: • Uncertainty is a natural concept, and our mind will never be able to handle all the information about a given environment, and this information doesn’t exists, nor can limit it to a specific time. • In artificial environments created by man: legal, social, organizational, etc. Good regulation (laws) or good strategic plans can reduce the uncertainty of these environments

  • 38. 01/06/2016 Antoni Elias Fusté 2015 September SYSTEM VS. ENVIRONMENT, A MATH CONJECTURE THAT CAN HELP CREATIVE DESIGNERS SENSITIVITY
  • 39. 01/06/2016 Antoni Elias Fusté 2015 September SYSTEM VS. ENVIRONMENT, A MATH CONJECTURE THAT CAN HELP CREATIVE DESIGNERS • Sensitivity is the degree of susceptibility to damage or harm from changes in the environment. It means also the degree of awareness and responsiveness to internal and external changes, challenges, or demands. In maths the concept means: Degree of change in a dependent variable in response to a change in an independent variable on which it is dependent. • In order to estimate the Sensitivity of the System-Environment to the Systems evolution, changes or adaptability, we need good information. • 41. 01/06/2016 Antoni Elias Fusté 2015 September SYSTEM VS. ENVIRONMENT, A MATH CONJECTURE THAT CAN HELP CREATIVE DESIGNERS • When there are low uncertainty environments, stable environments, systems may become specialized. But in unstable, or uncertainty environments, systems must be adaptive, flexible, general purpose. • The old adage: “If it works do not touch”, ceases to have effect. The new consideration should be: “If it works and you see that the environment starts to change, you have to start thinking about change, to evolve and adapt or, in order to survive, your system complexity will increase”. • The most immediate way to increase the complexity of a system is to increase its volume. What is happening with companies in the current economic environment ?: Mergers, takeovers, holdings building ..., they are increasing volume. Several ones try to adapt and anticipate. • 42. 01/06/2016 Antoni Elias Fusté 2015 September SYSTEM VS. ENVIRONMENT, A MATH CONJECTURE THAT CAN HELP CREATIVE DESIGNERS WHY THE SYSTEM TO SYSTEM ENVIRONMENT IDENTITY CONJECTURE IS IMPORTANT FOR CREATIVE PEOPLE ? BECAUSE In addition to help them to understand the challenge, if CREATIVE PEOPLE, at work attempt to take into account the system environment Identity Conjecture, in a straightforward and subconsciously manner, they will be considering the overall universe in which his work is going to act, and therefore they designs will be more complete, more integrated, overall. Then: the best possible.
