3. Bologna’s port
The canal Navile was built between XII and XIII century. It was used as the
principal dealing way among Bologna, Ferrara and Venice. Precisely the canals
were used to transport people and products through the Padan lowland. The
boats were built specifically to sail in the canal. There are different types of
boats, like the ‘Bucintoro’ for the passengers. The traders used to sell the
country’s products and the fish of the same canal. The Navile changed into a
power supply of urban water in the XIX, and in the 1547 the Pope entrusted to
Giacomo Barozzi the project of a new port in the city. Its realisation required a lot
of years, the work was completed at the end of the 1700.
