Trash Andy Mulligan Analysis
Andy Mulligan's 'Trash' deals with challenging issues, including children living in third world
countries and poverty. Mulligan uses language techniques as well as rich characters and setting
descriptions to help educate readers about poverty. Language techniques, such as sensory language
and imagery language, and setting descriptions were used to make the reader feel the impact of
these situations. Mulligan also uses rich characters in the novel to assist in informing the reader
about poverty and issues in third world countries.
Throughout the novel 'Trash', Andy Mulligan uses language techniques such as imagery to establish
rich settings of Behala. For example, when Mulligan was describing the scene of Smokey Mountain,
Mulligan described the Mountain as, "It's a place they call Behala, and it's a rubbish town. Three
years ago it was Smokey Mountain, but Smokey Mountain got so bad that they closed it down and
shifted us along the road." The description Mulligan used about Smokey Mountain gives the reader
a clear, rich image and notes the dangerous condition that Raphael, his friends and family go
through. Another example of imagery, which Mulligan used, is the scene of Rat's (Jun–Jun) 'hole'
when Mulligan described the setting of where Rat lived. He described it as "The walls and ceiling
were damp brick, and there were cracks everywhere. That was where the rats came in and out, and I
guessed there were nests just on the other side." Mulligan made this simple but very

Setting A Weight Loss And Fitness Plan
Hellooooo Fit Fem 'rs!! Hope you had a fabulous Memorial 's Day Weekend! Now is the perfect
time to decide what your weight loss and fitness goals are, right? I mean, we shouldn 't wait till
January 1st to make a fitness resolution happen. One of my favorite approaches to setting a weight
loss and fitness plan is to actually set goals. Sometimes we set our vision for the "perfect body" so
high, we lose track, we fail, and guess what, we revert back to our old habits that made us fat and
unhealthy to begin with.
To attain the full success of your newfound health and fitness program, you should also set clear
goals and directions. With the Make it SMART: 5 steps to fitness goal setting techniques, you can
now set definite goals that will continually motivate you to keep on going with your current diet or
exercise program for you to attain the body and the weight loss you want. SMART is an acronym
describing the right qualities your goals should have in order for it to bring realistic results. This
acronym will easily remind you of these qualities and guide you towards the proper way to health
and fitness.
This SMART goal setting plan is quite simple.
S – Specific and Significant
One of the important weight loss goal setting strategies is setting specific and major goals. Your
goals should clearly state what is specifically what you want to achieve, and when to achieve it. Do
not just go on saying or thinking, "I want to lose weight". Instead, come up with particular

As a qualified level 3 practitioner I am responsible to fulfil my duties and work role to the best of

Another crucial criteria of my role is to promote good behaviour and to help with this all members
of staff in our classroom implements the golden rules which have to be followed at all times. We
promote this by again asking children to add marbles to the jar, using praising vocabulary or by
sticker charts for those children who are struggling to follow the rules. I regularly listen to the
children read and keep records of their achievements which are reported back to the class teacher. I
am very fortunate that I get along quite well with the other team members in my classroom and this
helps with lots of different aspects of my responsibilities and duties as I could find it extremely
difficult to communicate with a member of staff if there was an atmosphere and so discussing the
children's issues or next steps may be awkward if it happens at all. Working well in a team is an
essential part of becoming a level 3 practitioner no matter what the situation is as we constantly
have to have involvement with team members as well as parents and other professionals to be able
to provide the children in our care a fair and equal opportunity to education. In order to abide by not

The Trial Of Simpson : An Agenda Setting Analysis
The Trial of O.J. Simpson: An Agenda–Setting Analysis
Mariah Short
University of Kentucky
The Trial of O.J. Simpson: An Agenda–Setting Analysis
During the infamous O.J. Simpson trial the television news media was ever present. Placing the trial
as a top news story set in motion the idea that this trial was an important issue. However, the
television news media was not successful at determining whether O.J. was guilty or not. For this
reason, the O.J. Simpson trial is an excellent example of the Agenda Setting Theory. This paper will
analyze the role the theory has in the murder trial. Television news outlets support this theory by
showing people the Simpson case was important through constant coverage, but was not successful
at telling the audience what to think on the issue.
Theoretical Background
Understanding the background and history of the Agenda Setting Theory is imperative to this
analysis. Dr. Max McComb and Dr. Donald Shaw developed the Agenda Setting Theory in a study
conducted during the 1968 presidential election (McCombs & Shaw, 1972, p. 178). This study
describes how if an audience is exposed to the same media, they will place importance on the same
issues. This theory strictly presents information and sets the terms of public discourse. At the time,
this was a trailblazing new idea.
The central claim of the Agenda Setting Theory explains why people with similar media exposure
place importance on the same issues. Although different people may feel

work along with a certain standard of moral and ethical behaviour. Within a job description the main
points usually tell you what tasks and responsibilities you are required to do, it does not state how
these requirements need to be carried out. In order to find this out, you would refer to the relevant
standards that are in place that allow you to work. Relevant standards, like codes of practice will
differ depending on the country in which you work. Each UK country has National Minimal
Standards that are used by inspectors to ensure that services are being delivered at an acceptable
level. National Occupational Standards are also set across the whole of the UK to ensure that an
individual effectively carries out their work within the care industry. The National Occupational
Standards form the basis to all qualifications in the care sector (Pearsons College & FE

Pleasantville setting essay
Describe at least ONE important setting in the text(s).
Explain how the setting helped to show the author / creator's idea(s), supporting your points with
visual and / or oral language features.
The film Pleasantville written, directed and produced by Gary Ross shows a time period in
American History where life was more comfortable, stable and 'perfect' if you would generalise it.
However, as the film ironically shows, this was a time when people were more ignorant, racist and
most certainly sexist. Ross demolishes this illusion of the great 1950s American society by showing
how its defects are gradually changed from black and white to colour. Ross uses various settings to
help show the viewer the imperfect aspects of Pleasantville's ... Show more content on

Betty is a clear example of costume change. In the beginning Betty wore the typical ladies dress
wear, big poodle skirt etc but as betty starts gaining more knowledge and independence she starts
dressing more elegantly and feminine .This shows the viewer that as the people of pleasantville
gains more knowledge they start to demonstrate the idea of 'The importance of change' which is one
of the ideas that gary ross shows us through setting.
Music is an important signifier of setting and shows the idea of 'The importance of change' clearly
throughout the film. When Jen and David first enter Pleasantville the recurring songs and motifs for
example 'Take 5' by Dave Brubeck which is played at the beginning in the soda shop gives the town
of pleasantville a very joyful and 'pleasant' atmosphere. This music perfectly matches the naivety of
the teenagers as they engage in good, clean fun with their peers. As the idea of 'The importance of
change' starts to appear in pleasantville, the music becomes more complex and darker to portray the
new rebellious mood that has seized Pleasantville. An example of this is when the new code of
conduct was issued and one of the rules were 'In no event shall any music be tolerated that is not of
temperate or 'pleasant' nature'.In a scene when the 'coloureds' were all gathered at the back

Debunking the Goal Setting Theory
Debunking the Goal Setting Theory

Often times in the business world, organizations become so fixated on the goals they set, that when
they begin to go wrong, an organization will invest more into that goal instead of looking for a
different path. Oliver Burkeman's book, "The Antidote: Happiness for People Who Can't Stand
Positive Thinking" devotes a whole chapter to the importance or lack thereof of setting goals. In his
book, he tells a story of Chris Kayes who was on the foothills of Mt. Everest at the same time the
tragedy that took the lives of eight climbers depicted in the book, "In Thin Air." Kayes observed
even through this ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
However on the flip side these same traits used to create a positive environment can also be used to
against the organization. We start with the letter "S" for specific as this commands that the goal to be
focused and attentive. Unfortunately though, this can actually cause a too narrowed focus where
employees will overlook important details of the task. With a narrowed focus, employees become
blind to everything else but their task and the often times miss a critical detail that could potentially
steer them into a new direction and a more profitable gain or prevent a fatal error from occurring.
An example in this can be seen in the automotive industry of late and the entire vehicle recalls that
have been made due to faulty engine or ignition parts that have caused human fatalities. The
automotive industry giants have a specific goal to create a top of the line vehicle fast and get it out
to the market that they continuously pass over safety issues and inspections in order to accomplish
this single goal. In keeping with the classic notion that you get what you reward (Kerr, 1975, 1995),
goal setting may cause the employee to miss important aspects of their task or performance that are
not specifically outlined by the goal setting system.
Next we move on to the "M" for measurable and the hazards that can arise from putting a
measurable capacity on goals. Being able to measure progress is said to keep the employees on track
and provide

Setting In The Raven Boys By Maggie Stiefvater
This analysis explains why "The Raven Boys" which was written by Maggie Stiefvater uses the
settings as characters and develops the plot with a setting that progresses alongside it. There are
three main sceneries that are regularly heard throughout the series that helps communicate the
importance of each location. First, there's the big, geographical, and historic setting which happens
to be the town: Henrietta, Virginia. Home to a majority of the characters and the most alluring magic
that seems to only attract trouble. Next, there is the mysterious, questionable, and dangerous forest:
Cabeswater, where the teenagers of this novel spend a great deal of their time. Lastly, there is
Monmouth Manufacturing, an old brick warehouse, owned and ... Show more content on

Gansey, the owner, choose to live there because to avoid living in dorms along with Ronan, who
also was not allowed to return back to his childhood home. Noah was dead, Adam lived in a church
attic and Blue with her mother. Monmouth's significance is based on the security it offered to the
teens and the sense of being able to be vulnerable with somebody of personal selection. The old
warehouse presented them with a place to retreat to, gather information then prepare to set out on
another adventure to find the dead king. It was the raven boy's kingdom and Gansey was the king of
it. "The high ceiling soared above them, exposed iron beams holding up the roof... And everywhere,
everywhere, there were books." (Stiefvater 41)
Each and every literary element is necessary to have a novel worth of a nod. "The Raven Boy" had
many different aspects to it that could have been of central focus but the setting needed more credit
than what is easily noticeable. Cabeswater, Henrietta, and Monmouth were the settings that had
diverse moods. The three also had remarkably different atmospheres that exclusively influenced
each character's thought processes and their reasoning for their behaviors. Any well–written novel
should be able to be analyzed on any aspect of its work and "The Raven Boys" has not disappointed
its supporters

The Martian Analysis
Ridley Scott's The Martian employs a variety of settings to reinforce the central ideas prevalent
throughout the film. The setting emphasizes ideas such as individual development due to isolation,
the importance of sacrificial actions, the achievements associated with teamwork and patriotism, as
well as the significance of maintaining sanity in the most hopeless situation. Scott has used
particular film conventions along with use of setting to express to the audience his individual ideas
on growth and development along with symbolic links to the human development and psyche.
The setting on Mars reinforces the impact of isolation on Mark Watney's individual development as
well as the deterioration of one's mental state. Towards the beginning of the film, Watney is
physically struck in the destructive storm, resulting in wounds, with the possibility of death.
Consequently, Watney is left in isolation. The use of a dark, desolate environment in this setting,
heightens the enclosed darkness Watney has encountered on Mars, which further exemplifies the
impact of isolation, hence symbolising the pinnacle of his individual development. As Watney is
awoken from a constant and repetitious beeping noise, he is found to be covered in sand and debris,
symbolising his involvement and forthcoming journey with Mars along with effective personal
development and growth. Establishing and point–of–view shots whilst panning over the landscape
depict the desolate and forbidding shadows as well

Formal And Informal Place Setting
Chances are you've been taught some form of dining etiquette beginning at a young age. You
probably remember your parents telling you, "Don't eat with your mouth full," "Keep your elbows
off of the table," or "Don't play with grandpa's teeth at the dinner table!" What you probably didn't
realize is your parents were conditioning you on how to act at the dinner table in social situations,
and possibly most important, in the business world. If you're planning on a career in business, the
probability of being invited to an informal lunch interview or a formal dinner is likely. In the
following paragraphs, I will describe the differences between a formal and informal place setting,
and explain some of the do's and do not's of proper dining etiquette in a business setting. First of all,
arrive to the dinner on time, always dress for the occasion, and remember the host is in charge. If
seating is assigned, look for the place card with your name on it. The place card is typically located
at the center of the dinner plate, or just above it on the table. If there are no place cards, wait for the
host to direct you to your assigned seat. Let the host sit down before you unless they tell you to first.
Once seated, pick up your napkin, fold it in half, and lay it across your lap. Make sure the napkin
fold is away from you so when you use it any crumbs on the napkin will fall to the floor and not on
you. Second, take notice of the place setting. It's a good indicator whether the dinner

Themes Of The Setting Sun
One of the major themes of Osamu Dazai's The Setting Sun is the socioeconomic fall of aristocracy
in Japan following World War II. The title itself reflects these core themes: when the Japanese write
down the name of their home country in Kanji (one of its three alphabets), it roughly means "land of
the rising sun". The Setting Sun is an allegory that the glory days of Japan have come to an end,
specifically their ancient aristocracy and their old families, as well as Japanese culture. The
comfortable bourgeoisie becomes the hard–working proletariat and the historical situation changes
as the material circumstances changes. This social and economic change is both subtly and unsubtly
shown through the main characters' flashbacks and stories; Kazuko and her family come from a long
line of aristocrats but now face the reality of living without power or status. Following three major
events –– the death of Kazuko's father, Kazuko's divorce to her wealthy husband, and the nation–
wide economic crisis caused by the war –– the family finds themselves out of money and out of
luck, challenging the way they formerly viewed the world, themselves, and their class. Through
their mother's incompetence, Kazuko's difficulty in working, and Naoji's existential crises, Dazai
deconstructs the classist ideals that claim the wealthy gained their status and capital because of hard
work, strength, intelligence, and personal superiority while remaining sympathetic toward the upper
classes.
The mother was akin to a doll; she was beautiful, fragile, and unargumentative. Her submissive
personality type made her a commodity; she was valued not for achievements or usefulness, but for
her perfect behavior and classic beauty. The way she dressed and ate made her the last of the true
aristocrats, or as Naoji describes, the "genuine article" (4) and she had high sign–exchange value in
herself. But after the death of her husband, Kazuko's father, it is clear that she had little practical
skill, a fact even Kazuko admits. "Mother understands less of money matters than a child... " (17).
"Naoji and I had taken advantage of her to grow up without concerning ourselves about anything.
Now Mother no longer had any money" (20). This shows that the

Agenda Setting Theory Essay examples

the power of his/her political party? If so, what actions might a president be likely to take and under

As for the President Utilizesing the media's dramatic emphasis on the economies downward spiral, a
President or presidential candidate would likely focus his media use in a positive way. He can use
the valence principle, as far as ensuring to discuss the topics being targeted by the media in his
favor. As I mentioned earlier, if the media is negatively discussing an issue, the President can try to
turn things around, so that he can get the people on his side. As we all know, there are multiple ways
to view the media and see what events are happening in the world around us. Being that we as
Americans are in a recession, a President or candidate would probably want to steer away from
supporting corporations or businesses that are hording taxpayers money over oil spills,
environmentally hazardous accidents, or natural resources being wasted away. What I'm trying to
say is that, in a presidential speech, or campaign speech, taking the supportive side of something
that is worsening our economic state would hurt the chances of a successful presidency. For
example, if a President wanted to persuade us to support his new healthcare proposal, he would
likely manipulate the medias impact on our views by displaying and airing various commercials and
programs which bring light to certain hospitals, or health policies rise in providing wider more
sufficient care to certain families without

Setting In A Separate Peace By John Knowles
In order to write a novel that continually grabs the reader's attention, the author must establish the
setting of the story. In John Knowles' A Separate Peace, he consistently uses the setting in the novel
to reinforce his, message. The story's World War II–era setting creates an ethos of uneasiness and
uncertainty for the young men preparing for war. This is seen with Gene visiting the school after the
war, Phineas' difficulty to adjust to the setting after his injury, and the numerous places that the
characters go in which they escape the reality of the war.
The book begins by revealing the narrator, an aged Gene, visiting the Devon school, setting the
location and general mood of the story. As Gene returns back to the grounds of Devon school, he
notices that almost nothing had changed:
Now here it was, after all, preserved by some considerate hand with varnish and wax. Preserved
along with it, like stale air in an unopened room, was the well–known fear which surrounded and
filled those days, so much of it that I hadn't even known it was there. Because, unfamiliar with the
absence of fear and what that was like, I had not been able to identify its presence (10).
The school he remembers is stuck in time. The setting of Devon sets the scene for a flashback by the
narrator. As he gazes upon the property, memories break to the surface, focusing on areas that will
be important to the story, such as the tree, the marble steps, and the athletic fields. It can also be

Media and The Agenda Setting Theory
According to the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms, section 11d, the accused is "to be
presumed innocent until proven guilty according to law in a fair and public hearing by an
independent and impartial tribunal" (Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms, 1982). Despite the
right to one's innocence preceding a fair and public trial, the indicted typically receives mass media
coverage, making the individual susceptible to the opinion's of the public. This is especially true in
the case of a renowned individual, such as a celebrity or politician. The media's coverage of the
news, prior to a fair hearing, results in public scrutiny of subjects. Media involvement generates
public uproar, frequently resulting in the condemning of the accused preceding their right to a fair
trial as stated in the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms. Not only is an individual's right,
according to the charter, to be presumed innocent jeopardized by the media but also their assumed
right to a private life is put into question.
Agenda Setting Theory
Agenda Setting Theory refers to the media's ability to influence the significance of topics to the
public. Agenda setting allows for the establishment of public awareness to issues made relevant by
media. There are two assumptions underlying the agenda–setting theory (McCombs & Shaw, 1972).
Firstly, the media's portrayal of an event does not necessarily reflect reality; rather the media filters
and shapes the news. Secondly, the infiltration of

Summary Of Marie Lu's Prodigy
The way a person acts or thinks everyday may be influenced in many ways, such as the
setting.Settings could be a big impact to a character just as much as a small impact. For example, in
Marie Lu's Prodigy demonstrated the powerful effect the setting could make on a character,
especially in the most important setting in the book, the Republic. In the beginning of Prodigy, the
main characters, June and Day, are in a military city, las vegas. They felt scared, cautious and very
aware. But why would normal people feel scared in las Vegas? Well, setting may have a role in this.
June and Day are the most wanted criminals of the country, so they have to be careful not to draw
attention to themselves. So, they felt intimidated by the offers patrolling the streets and the risk of
getting caught. The text states, " Troops make their way up and down the street... This is a military
city, a world of soldiers...Day shakes his head slowly. He looks unsettlingly pale"(8). This illustrated
that the setting, las vegas, affected the characters. Las Vegas made Day feel uncomfortable. This
setting also made June think about the past few weeks of her life. The author writes, "Vegas is the
worst possible city for us to wander into by ourselves... I'm a criminal now, I'll never be able to go
back to the comforts of my old life. The thought leaves a sick, empty feeling in my stomach, as if I

Setting Goals
OBJECTIVES
The vision and mission of the company described the raison d 'être of the organization. The
objectives, however, represent the end results or the organization intends or wishes to achieve. They
are part of the planning process and apply to certain periods of time.
Most long–term objectives in the companies, according to David, can be classified as financial
(business area) or strategic (other areas of the organization). Both are targets (official statements),
but sometimes come into conflict with the real objectives (what is actually intended and are defined
by the actions of members of the organization) (2).

However, one problem of the APO is not always effective in times of dynamic change. APO

Another problem of the APO is that it becomes counterproductive to the zeal of the employees to
meet their goals without regard for their fellow unit. The manager must be locked very near to all
members of the unit to verify that there are purposes that are inimical. Finally, if the APO is seen
simply as an annual exercise of filling in paperwork, employees will not be motivated to accomplish
their goals.
2. Characteristics of well designed goals.
For a goal is set correctly should be written in terms of outcomes rather than actions. That is what
we want to achieve, not how to do it. The desired end result is the most important element of any
goal and, therefore, the goal should reflect this. With this, a goal must be measurable and
quantifiable. It is much easier to determine if they reached a goal that is measurable what is not. For
example, if you have the goal of

A New Planning Format Into A Nursery Setting Essay
In this task the introduction of a new planning format into a nursery setting will be discussed. The
impact on teachers, staff, pupils and parents will be critically analysed and suggestions for
improvements made.
The private day nursery is situated on the outskirts of a Staffordshire market town, surrounded by
countryside. This 77 place day nursery caters for 117 children of 0 to 8 years of age, including those
with special educational needs, disabilities and those who have English as an additional language.
There are 25 nursery practitioners within the setting with qualifications ranging from level two to
level five and with one Qualified Teacher Status. Thirteen members of staff are part time, doing
various hours throughout the week. The Nursery was re–registered in 2003 and is managed by a
partnership (Ofsted, 2014).
The Rationale for the new planning within the private day nursery is that it enables staff to carry out
observations throughout four months rather than the previous three. This allocates more time for
children to focus on an area of learning. Jarvis et al (2008) positions that the EYFS Medium term
plans (Appendix 1) are based on a topic.
Planning should be flexible and used as a guide (Early Years Matters, 2016). The EYFS 2012 was a
flexible guide due to it being non–statutory, however, the EYFS 2014 is now a statutory framework
for practitioners to follow and providing planned opportunities for children's needs and interests
(DfE, 2014). With the

NFLAgenda Setting Theoretical Model
Agenda Setting "The agenda–setting theoretical model claims that media exposure and the emphasis
of certain attributes of the topic can increase the public salience of the topic and those emphasized
attributes" (Fortunato, Abstract, 2008). This theory focuses clearly on how the media effects our
everyday lives. With this theory media sources share information about a topic they want to push
and get everyone talking about. Author of the journal NFL Agenda–setting states that theory can
increase public salience of the topic (Fortunato, 2008). With this theory media plays a role. The
reason is because when a specific theory is pushed so strongly is causes us to view that as the most
important situation going on in the media. The media picks on ... Show more content on

Agenda setting helps the audience become aware of situations in the sports world and give people
an opinion about situations. Last week all through the media Louisville's Men Basketball Program
and Scandal was talked about on every network. The agenda wasn't set on Heisman Trophy winner
Lamar Jackson from the university but on what the networks were pushing for and thought were
most interesting which was our basketball program. The agenda had been set and it was going to be
about Louisville Basketball. These media outlets allowed for the nation to form opinions and
negative views about the athletic program and as well as the University of Louisville. This theory
can be both good and bad depending on the topic, cause, and how the story is portrayed. Some
strengths of this theory are that it gives the audience a chance to hear about the story or event. With
a network having a such agenda set on a specific topic it allows people to catch the coverage
anytime of the day on radio, television and on social media. Another strength could be that it allows
the audience to react to the information given based on how the media shares the story. If the media
is constantly overreacting, or being biased the audience may have different feelings such as anger,
happiness, embarrassed. These emotions can come from someone who identifies with the
organization or player. The weakness of this theory is that it can focus on something too much.
Eventually one gets tired of hearing the same story on ESPN every hour on every different talk
show. For example, the kneeling in the NFL has been a lot of coverage and it is taking away from
the sport. After every game or before every game instead of talking about the game plan or key
players I hear the conversation about the kneeling of the anthem. Yes, it may be a big concern but

Examples Of SMART Goal Setting
1.SMART goal setting stands for Specific, Measurable, Acceptable, Realistic, and Timely. For a
goal to be specific, the question to ask one's self is "do you know what, how, where, when, with
whom, and how long you will do this?" For a goal to be measurable, the question to ask one's self is
"will you know when it is done?" For a goal to be acceptable, the question to ask one's self is "will
you feel good about doing this?" For a goal to be realistic, the question to ask one's self is "are you
able to do this?" For a goal to be timely, the question to ask one's self is "is there a deadline
attached?" If you are able to answer all of these questions, then you have set a good goal for
yourself and the only thing that's left for you to do is to commit to your goal. (Leyland, T. (2011).

Analysis of the Setting in August Wilson's 'Fences'
American Lit: Choices and Voices
Helen Li
October 18, 2017
The Setting in Fences
Fences written by August Wilson was focused on the life of Troy Maxson, an African American full
of harshness towards the society because of the barriers he had to face in life back in the 1950's. The
title 'Fences' reflects the book's story and overall symbol. The setting is used as a frame to the
message and metaphorical meaning of the book. Troy struggles to define his rights and
responsibilities as a husband, brother, worker, friend and father through the complex symbolism of
the settings.
August Wilson uses the symbol of a 'fence ' in this book on different occasions. Throughout the play,
Troy neglects building fences that Rose has reminded him to ... Show more content on

Troy is not invisible, but he builds himself up to be. He kept saying that he could always hit a
homerun off when playing a game when he was younger. Troy uses the idea of baseball to almost
taunt death, daring the evil to fight him. Troy is characterized as seeing himself as unhuman and
extremely powerful. Troy don't want to let death come with ease, and always uses his former
baseball skill to try to show that he can beat death. Troy relates most of the components in his life to
baseball, because he felt baseball makes him more comfortable. This is also the reason why he put
the setting of baseball in the back of the yard, it is to remind him that he is strong enough to protect
the family and himself, and reinforces his ego using his skill with baseball. The setting of a rundown
house in a poor neighborhood gives the impression of their struggle to survive as African
Americans. The shabbiness of the exterior suggests their low social status. "A relatively recent
addition to the house and running its full width, the porch lacks congruence. It is a sturdy porch with
a flat roof. One or two chairs of dubious value sit at one end where the kitchen window opens on to
the porch. An old fashioned ice box stands silent guard at the opposite end" (Wilson, setting
description). While the newly added porch may represent an attempt to

Goal Setting for Academic Success
29 November 2010 Goal Setting for Academic Success Goals are like road maps; they get a person
from one point to another. Goals provide the direction one needs to reach a destination. The best
way to get results is to plan for the future, but live one day at a time. Think about the future; how
does one define success? What makes one happy? What drives a person? What makes a person get
out of bed in the morning? Does success mean family, money, security, helping others, improving
the environment, solving problems, a career, or a degree? Whatever a student decides, the key to
academic success is to strengthen one's will to succeed and to do this one must set academic goals.

By conditioning, the student will be able to follow this map created as if life depends on it because
in a way it does. This is the student's future and they should take it very seriously (Carter et al. 100).
Putting academic strategies into action is to achieve a desired goal. Prepare daily, weekly, monthly,
and yearly; action plans are your set of directions to achieve academic goals. Things to remember to
include in a plan of action is time management, which would include how much time is spent
studying everyday; where the student will study, who the student will study with, and how the
student will avoid distractions. Keeping assignments and important dates organized in a planner is
very important. The student will then be able to refer to it on a daily. A student must also take into
consideration negativity and how to avoid it, assuring that the short term goals are being met
successfully. The student should be encouraged even if they don't succeed at first to try again. The
student may struggle at first deciding and committing to academic goals, but that doesn't mean they
can't go back and revise academic plans. It's important to note that in the beginning of the post

Installing the wildlife camera
Step 1: Identify the area you want to monitor wildlife in, trail intersections are good areas.
Step 2: You will want to find a tree with limited vegetation at knee height and large enough size that
the tree will not sway in the wind. Moving vegetation or having a moving stand will set the sensor
off, wasting away the battery.
Step 3: Once you have identified your tree you will want to tie the camera to the tree at knee height
making sure it is parallel to the ground.
Step 4 (Optional): If the camera is not parallel to the ground you will need to find a stick to place
behind the camera in order to make it level.

Discover What You Want in Life and Achieve It Faster than You Think Possible
¿Que es Goal Setting?
Goal setting is the process of writing down specific, measurable, and time–targeted objectives. You
figure out want you want, you write your desires down, and then you work towards achieving them.
Benefits and Importance of Goal Setting
Without goals or a destination, you are like a heat seeking missile with no heat to seek.
In addition to letting go of the chains that pull you in every direction, another benefit of goal setting
is that it naturally helps you stay away from the circumstances you want to avoid in life.

Specific
Be specific. Buying a 3 bedroom house with a two car garage in downtown Chicago is a clearer
target for your mind than merely saying you want to own your own home.
Measurable
It is easier to stay committed if you can measure progress. If you set a goal to increase sales by 10%,
and sales are up 5%, you can see the progress.
Positive
Say what you want to achieve instead of what you want to avoid. I will attend all classes vs. I won't
miss any classes. When I say don't think of a pink cow, what is the first thing that pops up in your
mind? Right, a pink cow. Your mind doesn't hear the words won't and no. So when you set a goal of
not missing any classes, your mind automatically visualizes you missing classes, and that is not
what you want your mind to do. You want it to visualize what it is you want, so always state your
goals in the positive.
Deadline
Set a date that you want to accomplish your goal by. Deadlines make you more serious about your
goals; otherwise you might find yourself always postponing your efforts to get started. Set deadlines
appropriately. Remember that some goals may take years to accomplish, while others can take as
little as a day. Also, some goals don't have a deadline necessarily to complete something by, rather a
deadline to start something. For example, a goal to spend more time with the kids is something you
start doing by a specific date, as

The Importance Of Work Place Culture And How It Has A...
"People will typically be more enthusiastic where they feel a sense of belonging and see themselves

thrive, and demonstrates the importance of work place culture and how it has a large influence on if
a business is successful, in the same way that Cameron and Quinn explained (2011) that some of
today's successful firms have developed a distinctive culture that is identifiable by its employees, for
example Disney. In early years settings this sense of belonging is shared through having a uniform,

Another major factor is how the individuals will play a role in how the communication is received,
for example their role within the setting. This is supported by Tylor and Van Every (2000) when
they stress that with clear and concise communication between employees an organisation can
emerge and grow. Schins (1985) explained in his model that there are three basic levels of elements
for culture , described as layers. One of these is artefacts which are the visible elements like uniform
worn by staff and children which shows a group presence and aides belonging, providing a sense of
family, furthermore there is organisational structure, the manager leading the setting with their
values which are fed down through the deputy to the early years practitioners, through strategies and
goals set by the manager, and any policies and procedures the setting follows. One of these is what
the setting stands for which is for all children to be happy and to achieve, another one is where the
setting aims to be in the future. Which in the case of early years is striving to achieve the highest
grade with OFSTED, if staff feel valued and confident in their work this will influence a more
positive attitude in their behaviour and feelings, and will want to achieve more as a whole.
Hofstede (1980) suggested that settings need to consider the individual values of the employees and
their personal values and they should be encouraged and not criticised to make a

Setting In Through The Tunnel, By Doris Lessing
The settings are important in a story because they tell where and when the story takes place. A
reader should always focus on the setting, so he will not get lost in the story. In Doris Lessing's
"Through the Tunnel," the story focuses on a boy named Jerry trying to accomplish something very
difficult while his mother wants him to stay safe. He sees some boys swimming through a
challenging tunnel and he tries to go through the tunnel to impress them in order to become friends
with them. The setting in "Through the Tunnel" has an impact on the characters, the plot, and the
symbols.
One way the setting has an impact includes the characters. The safe beach is an example of how the
setting can impact the character. According to the story, "The boy . . . turned his eyes, which had a
frown behind them, toward the bay and back again to his mother" (1). Jerry's mother wants him to
stay at the beach. She feels like the setting of the bay is dangerous, but Jerry feels the pull to explore
the more dangerous bay. Secondly, the setting of the water gives Jerry a hard time. Jerry is trying to
hold his breath under water so that it will not be hard to breathe while he is swimming (3). He is
trying to learn how to control his breathing so he can swim better. He tried to put stones on his arms
so he could stay under the water to help him. Also, another example is the tunnel. According to the
author, Jerry "...tried to push himself in. He had got his head in, found his shoulders jammed, moved

The Agenda Setting Theory On The Public Agenda
Abstract
The history of the agenda–setting theory goes back over 50 years to when it was introduced in a
1972 edition of Public Opinion Quarterly by Drs. Maxwell McCombs and Donald Shaw. It was first
developed as a means of studying the 1968 American presidential election as it relates to the most
important issues determined by the news media and the most important issues determined by the
100 residents of Chapel Hill, North Carolina (McCombs & Shaw, 1972). Still relevant today, the
agenda setting theory explains the influence of the media agenda on the public agenda. In a
comprehensive analysis of the agenda–setting theory, agenda setting includes three levels or
psychological processes: basic agenda setting, attribute agenda setting and network agenda setting.
History of Agenda Setting Theory
The media's power in influencing public opinion has sparked the theory that we now know as
agenda setting. In 1922 this concept was first investigated by newspaper columnist Walter Lippman
(Wahl–Jorgensen and Hanitzsch, 2009, pp.147). Since then Drs. Maxwell McCombs and Donald
Shaw have coined what we now know as the agenda setting theory. Their research of the 1968
presidential election of the Republican nominee Richard Nixon and the Democratic nominee Hubert
Humphrey proved groundbreaking. Before the agenda setting theory, assumptions were that certain
behaviors and attitudes were results of the way information was

Symbolism In The Setting Sun
As one of Japan's most celebrated authors of the Post War Era, Osamu Dazai's work, as well as his
own life, has been examined and analyzed by countless students and researchers from multiple
perspectives. Many such readers find themselves fascinated by the symbolism Dazai employed in
his novels to express his views on cultural, socioeconomic, and even feministic issues that plagued
his conscious mind. Kazuko, the main character and narrator of The Setting Sun (1947, translated in
1956 by Donald Keene), can certainly be praised as a strong female character who overcomes
economic collapse. However, Dazai places incredible focus on the psychological aspects of the
fallen Japanese aristocracy through Kazuko, who has low self–esteem and a critical superego paired
with a fear of intimacy at the beginning of the novel, but who eventually finds the will to struggle
against her own mind. The Setting Sun opens with Kazuko eating breakfast with her mother in their
country home in Japan, and the two have a conversation centered around Naoji, Kazuko's younger
brother, who had never come back from fighting in World War II and with whom they had lost all
contact (9). Kazuko, in an attempt to comfort her mother, quips that only good people die early, and
because he is such a scoundrel, Naoji is not dead. The focus is placed on Kazuko by her mother,
however, who jokes that she will therefore die an early death, but Kazuko responds seriously with,
"Why should I? I'm bad and ugly both" (10). She is explicitly unsatisfied with her personal behavior
and appearance, indicating a severely low self–esteem. This core psychological issue appears again
when, after accidentally burning down their shed, Kazuko feels immense and crushing guilt, despite
the fire being an honest mistake. She cries from shame and embarrassment, unable to look the
villagers who had helped her put the fire out in the eyes (31). She fears their judgement, but she is
the one who judges the harshest. Delving further into her psyche, Kazuko's self–esteem issues
appear to stem from her superego, which also causes her guilt as she feels her sexual desires are
wrong and shameful. Dazai gradually reveals that Kazuko had once been married, but had divorced

The Agenda Setting Function of the Mass Media
Introduction
In 1922, Walter Lippmann suggested the very first idea of agenda–setting in his book "Public
Opinion", and Bernard Cohen (1963) said "The media may not tell us what to think, but they are
stunning successful in telling us what to think about". Those concepts assumed that with the limited
ability and innate curiosity of human beings, most people rely on media institutions to gain
information outside family, neighborhood and workplace. Thus the media organizations have the
priority to choose which information is quality enough to be the most important, which is not, and
the information emphasized by the media could salience transfer to the public.
To verify this concept, McCombs and Shaw conducted the first empirical research, ... Show more

This literature review will use three levels of agenda setting effects as entry point to discussion the
core concept of agenda setting theory–the prominent transference from media agenda and public
agenda. Five original published researches will be described and analyzed. Although many parts
aforementioned can not be included in those five studies, with the long history and complicated net
of agenda–setting theory, three levels of agenda setting could be an appropriate point cut, just as
Guo, Vu and McCombs (2012) suggest:" agenda–setting has evolved from a focus on media effects
on the public's perception of the most important issues of the day to a theory elaborating a hierarchy
of communication effects, its core is three levels of agenda–setting". Considering of that, the

limitations of agenda–setting theory. (3) The important meaning of five selected researches. The
valuation of agenda–setting theory will also be discussed by analyzing those parts mentioned above.

Strength And Security : Technological Developments Of The...
Strength and security has adapted to the technological developments of the past century. In
comparison to how we derived strength and security in the past, technology now heavily obscures
what makes us feel safe. Companies, realizing this, have produced several advertisements that sell
their product by making it appear as if it will increase our safety and security. An effective example
of this is in Mophie's 2015 Super–bowl commercial titled "All Powerless," where the creative
producers linked having a charged phone with the safety and security found in everyday natural
laws. The advertisement utilizes sound, shot composition, lighting, and mise en scene in order to
distill a sense of both wonderful and terror in the viewer, while at the end providing an antidote to
the fear they have created. The antidote is, of course, Mophie's product which allows cell phones to
stayed charged for longer. Sound, and lack thereof, throughout the ad is extremely influential to
create the sense of chaos that the world has unfortunately found itself in. The advertisement begins
with a soft, ominous piano track with no other words being spoken. It creates an unsettling feeling
within the viewer, automatically making them seek some sort of comfort; some way to find the
security that background music alone stole. By using sound, the produces influence the
subconscious of viewers without even visually enticing them. After the solo piano music, the

Counseling, Reflection, And Setting Goals
In my first six sessions, it seemed to me the mindset of the counselor in the session is one of the
tantamount elements in dictating the outcome of the client's experience. The first session I
experienced brought on nervousness and uncertainty which led to insecurity. However, the more
time I spent listening to my client the more comfortable I became with the role of counselor. Such
feelings of comfort brought with it the ability to be more self–aware and client focused in the
session. When I was uncomfortable I asked confusing questions, focused too much on how I looked,
and lost the ability to attend to my client. I believe I came into these sessions strong in my nonverbal
skills and encouragers. Nevertheless, I struggled with focused counseling, reflection of emotions,
and setting goals. Intentionality seems to be significant in the growth process; therefore, one of my
first actions in response to these reflections will be to create a plan to address my opportunities for
growth. The discomfort I experienced in my first couple of sessions stemmed from several different
issues. Primarily, these feelings came from nerves. I have wanted to be an LPC for years, and being
put in the role of actually counseling made me nervous I would not measure up. Moreover, I feared
making the situation for my client worse because of something I would say or ask. Because of these
feelings, I lacked professionalism at times during my first session. I laughed too often, and in

candidates? What issues will be the hot topics for the election race? For that matter, what will be the
hot topics in the media for next week? Just as this paper must be structured, organized, and center
around a main idea, so must all information presented to an audience. Information can only be easily

The salience of an issue determines to what degree of importance the audience and the media place
on a particular story. The salience of a story in agenda setting determines the salience of the issues
within the public agenda (Leckenby).
The vividness of presentation is one way to raise the level of salience of an issue. A story that is
presented with graphic detail can cause the public perception of the issue involved to greatly
increase. If a story is sensationalized by the media, the audience will unconsciously attach
themselves to that particular topic. A story that shows graphic details and pictures of the events of
that story cause people to feel as if they were a part of that event. For example, pictures of the crash
of Flight 800 stick in the audience's mind. This leads the audience to believe that the crash of Flight
800 is an essential story that we must learn more about. The problem with this is that the audience
sometimes focuses too heavily on the story to see the issue at hand. This can negatively affect the
media's agenda setting power because the story is too detailed for the audience to see the issue
behind the story (Baran 302). The position of a story also affects the salience of an issue. If an
article on gun violence in schools is on the front page of The Washington Post, the audience
perceives that particular story as having great importance within the scheme of current news topics.

A Streetcar Named Desire Analysis
Realistically, A Streetcar Named Desire is in a fantasy setting because its fiction; meaning this entire
play is in a fantasy setting. Which essentially means that without fantasy, there wouldn't be any play.
As unnecessarily obvious as that is, the point is fantasy is a theme that has been expertly laced in
between each character. At first, it's a bit hard to notice, but nearing the end of this play, the scenes
connect so much better. In other words, going looking back through the scenes after finishing the
play, is a part of why this play is incredible. It's the amount of tiny details you don't catch onto at
first, but then they all smack you in the face after a major line in a scene. In short, fantasy is the key
word when you go through this play. Let's look at Stella first. When given the big picture, Stella
doesn't seem like the type to associate herself with fantasy and a general sense of uniqueness to her
character. She represents the control for the play as the normal character. Much like a science
experiment, and like the control, she is very important to compare the change between characters.
Throughout the play, her character stays relatively neutral with her interactions with others. So, to
see her role in the fantasy, you must look at the big picture and widen it even further. Backing up to
the previous statement on how the entire play is in a fantasy setting, that's Stella's role. To clarify,
imagine being in Stella's position during Blanche's

The Goal Setting Theory By Edwin Locke
The Goal–Setting Theory
Name of Student
Institution affiliation
The goal–setting theory was developed in 19sos by Edwin Locke. According to it, task performance
is essentially linked to goal setting. That means that higher and better task performance may be
achieved when goal setting is rationally applied, as clear goals inspire workers on optimal
performance.
Few words should be said about specifity of the goals which are expexted to be applied. They
should be clear to make it possible for any person to analyze one 's own task process. That is
particularly important, as far as in the absence of explicit and challenging goals the crewmembers
may not even consider their personal goals. Furthermore, goals may significantly enhance the
performance of an employee through the learning plans and problem solving approach. As the
employee strives to achieve the goal, his motivation and drive inspires him to learn and maximize
his efforts to overcome challenging tasks.
That is why when CEOs apply the goal–setting program in their company it is necessary to clearly
specify the standard of the average number of potholes that can be filled in a day. In addition, one
should raise the bar by setting a more challenging task by establishing a standard 20% higher than
the average.
The implementation of the goal–setting theory constitutes of moderators that would enhance or

Agenda Setting Analysis
Introduction The presidency occupies a unique position in all systems of government including the
American system of government. The formal powers and the constitutional position occupied by the
institution of the presidency are at the core of all national and international politics (Alexandrova &
Timmermans, 2013). The President can serve as Commander–in–chief, nominate and appoint
ambassadors, just to name a few of the powers of office. However, there is another power that is
often overlooked by most, the power of agenda setting. The Constitution does not directly state this
power, but it is heavily implied. This paper scrutinizes the institution of the presidency in line with
agenda–setting literature. The agenda setting process relates to a series of streams, circumstances, or
activities within public policy institutions and processes. The agenda setting process has three

The Goal Setting Goals And Goals
Setting goals is an idea many people use to help accomplish tasks, and reach them in a certain
amount of time. Implementing plans in an effective step in the right direction toward accomplishing
a desired goal. Students, teachers, people in the work place; everyone sets goals whether we are
aware of the goal setting or subconsciously setting goals. Goals can be long term or short term
depending on how big the goal is. I, myself here at Marywood have set some goals. One long term
and one short term. My short term goal is to achieve a CSAC Championship with my soccer team
this year. My long term goal is to maintain at least a 3.3 GPA throughout my college career. I intend
on using the core values from here at Marywood to help me achieve my goals I have set. Three of
the five values with specifically help me in my case; empowerment respect and excellence will
ultimately help me maintain my goals and excel in life.
Empowerment is defined in the Marywood handbook as, access to education that enables all to
achieve their full potential to live as conscientious citizens in a pluralistic society. Though one of my
goals in not academic; I still believe that empowerment will allow me to fulfill my goal of obtaining
a CSAC Championship title this year for soccer. Every team wants to win their league, and my team
and I here at Marywood University are striving to win the league this year. To achieve my full
access to athletic potential to succeed I will work hard on and off the field.

Agenda Setting Theory And Social Media
Natalie Andris
Prof. Hetherington
COM 126–R6029
15 August 2015 Agenda–Setting Theory and Social Media The agenda–setting theory states that the
media influences what people choose to think about. The theory emerged from communication
studies and focuses on mass media and setting the public agenda. In the seminal article, McCombs
and Shaw (1972) found a high correlation between media agenda and the public agenda through
content analysis of a local election. The theorists wanted to discover what types of people are most
susceptible to the media agenda through quantitative research. People acquire factual information
and learn how important each topic is based on how much is it emphasized by the media.
McCombs, Shaw, and subsequent researchers began researching the agenda–setting theory and it is
still being developed today to observe how the media influences the public. In 1922 Walter
Lippmann argued that mass media has the ability to create images of events in our minds known as
the agenda–setting theory. Walter Lippmann was the first person to propose that images can be
created in our minds through the actions of other people. In addition, he thought priorities of the
media strongly influence the priorities of the public. Lippmann believed the media caused some of
the pictures in our heads and allowed future researchers to further develop his ideas. McCombs and
Shaw (1972), first conducted an analysis of the 1968 election 's newspaper and television content.

Trash Andy Mulligan Analysis

  • 1. Trash Andy Mulligan Analysis Andy Mulligan's 'Trash' deals with challenging issues, including children living in third world countries and poverty. Mulligan uses language techniques as well as rich characters and setting descriptions to help educate readers about poverty. Language techniques, such as sensory language and imagery language, and setting descriptions were used to make the reader feel the impact of these situations. Mulligan also uses rich characters in the novel to assist in informing the reader about poverty and issues in third world countries. Throughout the novel 'Trash', Andy Mulligan uses language techniques such as imagery to establish rich settings of Behala. For example, when Mulligan was describing the scene of Smokey Mountain, Mulligan described the Mountain as, "It's a place they call Behala, and it's a rubbish town. Three years ago it was Smokey Mountain, but Smokey Mountain got so bad that they closed it down and shifted us along the road." The description Mulligan used about Smokey Mountain gives the reader a clear, rich image and notes the dangerous condition that Raphael, his friends and family go through. Another example of imagery, which Mulligan used, is the scene of Rat's (Jun–Jun) 'hole' when Mulligan described the setting of where Rat lived. He described it as "The walls and ceiling were damp brick, and there were cracks everywhere. That was where the rats came in and out, and I guessed there were nests just on the other side." Mulligan made this simple but very ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 2. Setting A Weight Loss And Fitness Plan Hellooooo Fit Fem 'rs!! Hope you had a fabulous Memorial 's Day Weekend! Now is the perfect time to decide what your weight loss and fitness goals are, right? I mean, we shouldn 't wait till January 1st to make a fitness resolution happen. One of my favorite approaches to setting a weight loss and fitness plan is to actually set goals. Sometimes we set our vision for the "perfect body" so high, we lose track, we fail, and guess what, we revert back to our old habits that made us fat and unhealthy to begin with. To attain the full success of your newfound health and fitness program, you should also set clear goals and directions. With the Make it SMART: 5 steps to fitness goal setting techniques, you can now set definite goals that will continually motivate you to keep on going with your current diet or exercise program for you to attain the body and the weight loss you want. SMART is an acronym describing the right qualities your goals should have in order for it to bring realistic results. This acronym will easily remind you of these qualities and guide you towards the proper way to health and fitness. This SMART goal setting plan is quite simple. S – Specific and Significant One of the important weight loss goal setting strategies is setting specific and major goals. Your goals should clearly state what is specifically what you want to achieve, and when to achieve it. Do not just go on saying or thinking, "I want to lose weight". Instead, come up with particular ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Setting and Children Essay SHC 32: Engage in personal development in health, social care or children's and young people's setting. 1.1 Describe the duties and responsibilities of own work role & 1.2 Explain expectations about own work role as expressed in relevant standards. As a qualified level 3 practitioner I am responsible to fulfil my duties and work role to the best of my ability. In other words I always like to try to give my position my full attention and give it 100% of my time and dedication. I believe that this helps me to support the children in my reception class. Another crucial criteria of my role is to promote good behaviour and to help with this all members of staff in our classroom implements the golden rules which have to be followed at all times. We promote this by again asking children to add marbles to the jar, using praising vocabulary or by sticker charts for those children who are struggling to follow the rules. I regularly listen to the children read and keep records of their achievements which are reported back to the class teacher. I am very fortunate that I get along quite well with the other team members in my classroom and this helps with lots of different aspects of my responsibilities and duties as I could find it extremely difficult to communicate with a member of staff if there was an atmosphere and so discussing the children's issues or next steps may be awkward if it happens at all. Working well in a team is an essential part of becoming a level 3 practitioner no matter what the situation is as we constantly have to have involvement with team members as well as parents and other professionals to be able to provide the children in our care a fair and equal opportunity to education. In order to abide by not only my settings policies and procedures but the laws, regulations and guidelines set by local authorities and central government it is also essential to remember essential aspects of ... • 4. The Trial Of Simpson : An Agenda Setting Analysis The Trial of O.J. Simpson: An Agenda–Setting Analysis Mariah Short University of Kentucky The Trial of O.J. Simpson: An Agenda–Setting Analysis During the infamous O.J. Simpson trial the television news media was ever present. Placing the trial as a top news story set in motion the idea that this trial was an important issue. However, the television news media was not successful at determining whether O.J. was guilty or not. For this reason, the O.J. Simpson trial is an excellent example of the Agenda Setting Theory. This paper will analyze the role the theory has in the murder trial. Television news outlets support this theory by showing people the Simpson case was important through constant coverage, but was not successful at telling the audience what to think on the issue. Theoretical Background Understanding the background and history of the Agenda Setting Theory is imperative to this analysis. Dr. Max McComb and Dr. Donald Shaw developed the Agenda Setting Theory in a study conducted during the 1968 presidential election (McCombs & Shaw, 1972, p. 178). This study describes how if an audience is exposed to the same media, they will place importance on the same issues. This theory strictly presents information and sets the terms of public discourse. At the time, this was a trailblazing new idea. The central claim of the Agenda Setting Theory explains why people with similar media exposure place importance on the same issues. In order to find this out, you would refer to the relevant standards that are in place that allow you to work. Relevant standards, like codes of practice will differ depending on the country in which you work. Each UK country has National Minimal Standards that are used by inspectors to ensure that services are being delivered at an acceptable level. National Occupational Standards are also set across the whole of the UK to ensure that an individual effectively carries out their work within the care industry. The National Occupational Standards form the basis to all qualifications in the care sector (Pearsons College & FE College, n.d.). The two main pieces of legislation that provide the framework for ensuring children's personal development and health and safety in a setting is the Childcare Act 2006 as well as the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974. Explain how the setting helped to show the author / creator's idea(s), supporting your points with visual and / or oral language features. The film Pleasantville written, directed and produced by Gary Ross shows a time period in American History where life was more comfortable, stable and 'perfect' if you would generalise it. However, as the film ironically shows, this was a time when people were more ignorant, racist and most certainly sexist. Ross demolishes this illusion of the great 1950s American society by showing how its defects are gradually changed from black and white to colour. Music is an important signifier of setting and shows the idea of 'The importance of change' clearly throughout the film. When Jen and David first enter Pleasantville the recurring songs and motifs for example 'Take 5' by Dave Brubeck which is played at the beginning in the soda shop gives the town of pleasantville a very joyful and 'pleasant' atmosphere. This music perfectly matches the naivety of the teenagers as they engage in good, clean fun with their peers. As the idea of 'The importance of change' starts to appear in pleasantville, the music becomes more complex and darker to portray the new rebellious mood that has seized Pleasantville. An example of this is when the new code of conduct was issued and one of the rules were 'In no event shall any music be tolerated that is not of temperate or 'pleasant' nature'.In a scene when the 'coloureds' were all gathered at the back ... • 10. Debunking the Goal Setting Theory Debunking the Goal Setting Theory Presented to Trudy Dunson, Instructor MGMT 2125, Performance Management By Andrea Smith 10/13/2014 Often times in the business world, organizations become so fixated on the goals they set, that when they begin to go wrong, an organization will invest more into that goal instead of looking for a different path. Oliver Burkeman's book, "The Antidote: Happiness for People Who Can't Stand Positive Thinking" devotes a whole chapter to the importance or lack thereof of setting goals. However on the flip side these same traits used to create a positive environment can also be used to against the organization. We start with the letter "S" for specific as this commands that the goal to be focused and attentive. Unfortunately though, this can actually cause a too narrowed focus where employees will overlook important details of the task. With a narrowed focus, employees become blind to everything else but their task and the often times miss a critical detail that could potentially steer them into a new direction and a more profitable gain or prevent a fatal error from occurring. An example in this can be seen in the automotive industry of late and the entire vehicle recalls that have been made due to faulty engine or ignition parts that have caused human fatalities. The automotive industry giants have a specific goal to create a top of the line vehicle fast and get it out to the market that they continuously pass over safety issues and inspections in order to accomplish this single goal. In keeping with the classic notion that you get what you reward (Kerr, 1975, 1995), goal setting may cause the employee to miss important aspects of their task or performance that are not specifically outlined by the goal setting system. Next we move on to the "M" for measurable and the hazards that can arise from putting a measurable capacity on goals. Setting In The Raven Boys By Maggie Stiefvater This analysis explains why "The Raven Boys" which was written by Maggie Stiefvater uses the settings as characters and develops the plot with a setting that progresses alongside it. There are three main sceneries that are regularly heard throughout the series that helps communicate the importance of each location. First, there's the big, geographical, and historic setting which happens to be the town: Henrietta, Virginia. Home to a majority of the characters and the most alluring magic that seems to only attract trouble. The old warehouse presented them with a place to retreat to, gather information then prepare to set out on another adventure to find the dead king. It was the raven boy's kingdom and Gansey was the king of it. "The high ceiling soared above them, exposed iron beams holding up the roof... And everywhere, everywhere, there were books." • 12. The Martian Analysis Ridley Scott's The Martian employs a variety of settings to reinforce the central ideas prevalent throughout the film. The setting emphasizes ideas such as individual development due to isolation, the importance of sacrificial actions, the achievements associated with teamwork and patriotism, as well as the significance of maintaining sanity in the most hopeless situation. Scott has used particular film conventions along with use of setting to express to the audience his individual ideas on growth and development along with symbolic links to the human development and psyche. The setting on Mars reinforces the impact of isolation on Mark Watney's individual development as well as the deterioration of one's mental state. Towards the beginning of the film, Watney is physically struck in the destructive storm, resulting in wounds, with the possibility of death. Consequently, Watney is left in isolation. The use of a dark, desolate environment in this setting, heightens the enclosed darkness Watney has encountered on Mars, which further exemplifies the impact of isolation, hence symbolising the pinnacle of his individual development. As Watney is awoken from a constant and repetitious beeping noise, he is found to be covered in sand and debris, symbolising his involvement and forthcoming journey with Mars along with effective personal development and growth. You probably remember your parents telling you, "Don't eat with your mouth full," "Keep your elbows off of the table," or "Don't play with grandpa's teeth at the dinner table!" What you probably didn't realize is your parents were conditioning you on how to act at the dinner table in social situations, and possibly most important, in the business world. If you're planning on a career in business, the probability of being invited to an informal lunch interview or a formal dinner is likely. In the following paragraphs, I will describe the differences between a formal and informal place setting, and explain some of the do's and do not's of proper dining etiquette in a business setting. First of all, arrive to the dinner on time, always dress for the occasion, and remember the host is in charge. If seating is assigned, look for the place card with your name on it. The place card is typically located at the center of the dinner plate, or just above it on the table. If there are no place cards, wait for the host to direct you to your assigned seat. Let the host sit down before you unless they tell you to first. Once seated, pick up your napkin, fold it in half, and lay it across your lap. Make sure the napkin fold is away from you so when you use it any crumbs on the napkin will fall to the floor and not on you. Second, take notice of the place setting. • 14. Themes Of The Setting Sun One of the major themes of Osamu Dazai's The Setting Sun is the socioeconomic fall of aristocracy in Japan following World War II. The title itself reflects these core themes: when the Japanese write down the name of their home country in Kanji (one of its three alphabets), it roughly means "land of the rising sun". The Setting Sun is an allegory that the glory days of Japan have come to an end, specifically their ancient aristocracy and their old families, as well as Japanese culture. The comfortable bourgeoisie becomes the hard–working proletariat and the historical situation changes as the material circumstances changes. This social and economic change is both subtly and unsubtly shown through the main characters' flashbacks and stories; Kazuko and her family come from a long line of aristocrats but now face the reality of living without power or status. Following three major events –– the death of Kazuko's father, Kazuko's divorce to her wealthy husband, and the nation– wide economic crisis caused by the war –– the family finds themselves out of money and out of luck, challenging the way they formerly viewed the world, themselves, and their class. Through their mother's incompetence, Kazuko's difficulty in working, and Naoji's existential crises, Dazai deconstructs the classist ideals that claim the wealthy gained their status and capital because of hard work, strength, intelligence, and personal superiority while remaining sympathetic toward the upper classes. The mother was akin to a doll; she was beautiful, fragile, and unargumentative. Her submissive personality type made her a commodity; she was valued not for achievements or usefulness, but for her perfect behavior and classic beauty. The way she dressed and ate made her the last of the true aristocrats, or as Naoji describes, the "genuine article" (4) and she had high sign–exchange value in herself. But after the death of her husband, Kazuko's father, it is clear that she had little practical skill, a fact even Kazuko admits. "Mother understands less of money matters than a child... " (17). As I mentioned earlier, if the media is negatively discussing an issue, the President can try to turn things around, so that he can get the people on his side. In John Knowles' A Separate Peace, he consistently uses the setting in the novel to reinforce his, message. The story's World War II–era setting creates an ethos of uneasiness and uncertainty for the young men preparing for war. This is seen with Gene visiting the school after the war, Phineas' difficulty to adjust to the setting after his injury, and the numerous places that the characters go in which they escape the reality of the war. The book begins by revealing the narrator, an aged Gene, visiting the Devon school, setting the location and general mood of the story. As Gene returns back to the grounds of Devon school, he notices that almost nothing had changed: Now here it was, after all, preserved by some considerate hand with varnish and wax. Preserved along with it, like stale air in an unopened room, was the well–known fear which surrounded and filled those days, so much of it that I hadn't even known it was there. Because, unfamiliar with the absence of fear and what that was like, I had not been able to identify its presence (10). The school he remembers is stuck in time. The setting of Devon sets the scene for a flashback by the narrator. As he gazes upon the property, memories break to the surface, focusing on areas that will be important to the story, such as the tree, the marble steps, and the athletic fields. It can also be ... Media and The Agenda Setting Theory According to the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms, section 11d, the accused is "to be presumed innocent until proven guilty according to law in a fair and public hearing by an independent and impartial tribunal" (Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms, 1982). Despite the right to one's innocence preceding a fair and public trial, the indicted typically receives mass media coverage, making the individual susceptible to the opinion's of the public. This is especially true in the case of a renowned individual, such as a celebrity or politician. The media's coverage of the news, prior to a fair hearing, results in public scrutiny of subjects. Media involvement generates public uproar, frequently resulting in the condemning of the accused preceding their right to a fair trial as stated in the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms. Not only is an individual's right, according to the charter, to be presumed innocent jeopardized by the media but also their assumed right to a private life is put into question. In the beginning of Prodigy, the main characters, June and Day, are in a military city, las vegas. They felt scared, cautious and very aware. But why would normal people feel scared in las Vegas? Well, setting may have a role in this. June and Day are the most wanted criminals of the country, so they have to be careful not to draw attention to themselves. So, they felt intimidated by the offers patrolling the streets and the risk of getting caught. The text states, " Troops make their way up and down the street... This is a military city, a world of soldiers...Day shakes his head slowly. He looks unsettlingly pale"(8). This illustrated that the setting, las vegas, affected the characters. Las Vegas made Day feel uncomfortable. This setting also made June think about the past few weeks of her life. The author writes, "Vegas is the worst possible city for us to wander into by ourselves... I'm a criminal now, I'll never be able to go back to the comforts of my old life. However, one problem of the APO is not always effective in times of dynamic change. APO program needs some stability for employees to direct their work towards achieving the goals. If you have to set new goals within a few weeks, no time for employees to strive to achieve or to measure that achievement. Another problem of the APO is that it becomes counterproductive to the zeal of the employees to meet their goals without regard for their fellow unit. The manager must be locked very near to all members of the unit to verify that there are purposes that are inimical. Finally, if the APO is seen simply as an annual exercise of filling in paperwork, employees will not be motivated to accomplish their goals. 2. Characteristics of well designed goals. For a goal is set correctly should be written in terms of outcomes rather than actions. That is what we want to achieve, not how to do it. The desired end result is the most important element of any goal and, therefore, the goal should reflect this. With this, a goal must be measurable and quantifiable. The private day nursery is situated on the outskirts of a Staffordshire market town, surrounded by countryside. This 77 place day nursery caters for 117 children of 0 to 8 years of age, including those with special educational needs, disabilities and those who have English as an additional language. The agenda wasn't set on Heisman Trophy winner Lamar Jackson from the university but on what the networks were pushing for and thought were most interesting which was our basketball program. The agenda had been set and it was going to be about Louisville Basketball. These media outlets allowed for the nation to form opinions and negative views about the athletic program and as well as the University of Louisville. This theory can be both good and bad depending on the topic, cause, and how the story is portrayed. Some strengths of this theory are that it gives the audience a chance to hear about the story or event. With a network having a such agenda set on a specific topic it allows people to catch the coverage anytime of the day on radio, television and on social media. Another strength could be that it allows the audience to react to the information given based on how the media shares the story. If the media is constantly overreacting, or being biased the audience may have different feelings such as anger, happiness, embarrassed. These emotions can come from someone who identifies with the organization or player. The weakness of this theory is that it can focus on something too much. Eventually one gets tired of hearing the same story on ESPN every hour on every different talk show. For example, the kneeling in the NFL has been a lot of coverage and it is taking away from the sport. A student must also take into consideration negativity and how to avoid it, assuring that the short term goals are being met successfully. The student should be encouraged even if they don't succeed at first to try again. The student may struggle at first deciding and committing to academic goals, but that doesn't mean they can't go back and revise academic plans. Step 2: You will want to find a tree with limited vegetation at knee height and large enough size that the tree will not sway in the wind. Moving vegetation or having a moving stand will set the sensor off, wasting away the battery. Step 3: Once you have identified your tree you will want to tie the camera to the tree at knee height making sure it is parallel to the ground. Step 4 (Optional): If the camera is not parallel to the ground you will need to find a stick to place behind the camera in order to make it level. Step 5: Make sure the camera is secure and level. • 29. Goal Setting Goal Setting Discover What You Want in Life and Achieve It Faster than You Think Possible ¿Que es Goal Setting? Goal setting is the process of writing down specific, measurable, and time–targeted objectives. You figure out want you want, you write your desires down, and then you work towards achieving them. Benefits and Importance of Goal Setting Without goals or a destination, you are like a heat seeking missile with no heat to seek. In addition to letting go of the chains that pull you in every direction, another benefit of goal setting is that it naturally helps you stay away from the circumstances you want to avoid in life. Buying a 3 bedroom house with a two car garage in downtown Chicago is a clearer target for your mind than merely saying you want to own your own home. Measurable It is easier to stay committed if you can measure progress. If you set a goal to increase sales by 10%, and sales are up 5%, you can see the progress. Positive Say what you want to achieve instead of what you want to avoid. I will attend all classes vs. I won't miss any classes. When I say don't think of a pink cow, what is the first thing that pops up in your mind? Right, a pink cow. Your mind doesn't hear the words won't and no. So when you set a goal of not missing any classes, your mind automatically visualizes you missing classes, and that is not what you want your mind to do. You want it to visualize what it is you want, so always state your goals in the positive. Deadline Set a date that you want to accomplish your goal by. Deadlines make you more serious about your goals; otherwise you might find yourself always postponing your efforts to get started. Set deadlines appropriately. Remember that some goals may take years to accomplish, while others can take as little as a day. Also, some goals don't have a deadline necessarily to complete something by, rather a deadline to start something. For example, a goal to spend more time with the kids is something you start doing by a specific date, as ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

"People will typically be more enthusiastic where they feel a sense of belonging and see themselves as member of a community, in comparison to a workplace in which each person is left to their own devices" Kohn (1999 pg. 188). This outlines that when people have a sense of belonging they will thrive, and demonstrates the importance of work place culture and how it has a large influence on if a business is successful, in the same way that Cameron and Quinn explained (2011) that some of today's successful firms have developed a distinctive culture that is identifiable by its employees, for example Disney. This is supported by Tylor and Van Every (2000) when they stress that with clear and concise communication between employees an organisation can emerge and grow. Schins (1985) explained in his model that there are three basic levels of elements for culture , described as layers. One of these is artefacts which are the visible elements like uniform worn by staff and children which shows a group presence and aides belonging, providing a sense of family, furthermore there is organisational structure, the manager leading the setting with their values which are fed down through the deputy to the early years practitioners, through strategies and goals set by the manager, and any policies and procedures the setting follows. One of these is what the setting stands for which is for all children to be happy and to achieve, another one is where the setting aims to be in the future. • 31. Setting In Through The Tunnel, By Doris Lessing The settings are important in a story because they tell where and when the story takes place. A reader should always focus on the setting, so he will not get lost in the story. In Doris Lessing's "Through the Tunnel," the story focuses on a boy named Jerry trying to accomplish something very difficult while his mother wants him to stay safe. He sees some boys swimming through a challenging tunnel and he tries to go through the tunnel to impress them in order to become friends with them. The setting in "Through the Tunnel" has an impact on the characters, the plot, and the symbols. One way the setting has an impact includes the characters. The safe beach is an example of how the setting can impact the character. According to the story, "The boy . . . turned his eyes, which had a frown behind them, toward the bay and back again to his mother" (1). Jerry's mother wants him to stay at the beach. She feels like the setting of the bay is dangerous, but Jerry feels the pull to explore the more dangerous bay. Secondly, the setting of the water gives Jerry a hard time. Jerry is trying to hold his breath under water so that it will not be hard to breathe while he is swimming (3). He is trying to learn how to control his breathing so he can swim better. He tried to put stones on his arms so he could stay under the water to help him. Also, another example is the tunnel. According to the author, Jerry "...tried to push himself in. • 32. The Agenda Setting Theory On The Public Agenda Abstract The history of the agenda–setting theory goes back over 50 years to when it was introduced in a 1972 edition of Public Opinion Quarterly by Drs. Maxwell McCombs and Donald Shaw. It was first developed as a means of studying the 1968 American presidential election as it relates to the most important issues determined by the news media and the most important issues determined by the 100 residents of Chapel Hill, North Carolina (McCombs & Shaw, 1972). Still relevant today, the agenda setting theory explains the influence of the media agenda on the public agenda. In a comprehensive analysis of the agenda–setting theory, agenda setting includes three levels or psychological processes: basic agenda setting, attribute agenda setting and network agenda setting. History of Agenda Setting Theory The media's power in influencing public opinion has sparked the theory that we now know as agenda setting. In 1922 this concept was first investigated by newspaper columnist Walter Lippman (Wahl–Jorgensen and Hanitzsch, 2009, pp.147). Since then Drs. Maxwell McCombs and Donald Shaw have coined what we now know as the agenda setting theory. Their research of the 1968 presidential election of the Republican nominee Richard Nixon and the Democratic nominee Hubert Humphrey proved groundbreaking. Before the agenda setting theory, assumptions were that certain behaviors and attitudes were results of the way information was ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 33. Symbolism In The Setting Sun As one of Japan's most celebrated authors of the Post War Era, Osamu Dazai's work, as well as his own life, has been examined and analyzed by countless students and researchers from multiple perspectives. Many such readers find themselves fascinated by the symbolism Dazai employed in his novels to express his views on cultural, socioeconomic, and even feministic issues that plagued his conscious mind. Kazuko, the main character and narrator of The Setting Sun (1947, translated in 1956 by Donald Keene), can certainly be praised as a strong female character who overcomes economic collapse. However, Dazai places incredible focus on the psychological aspects of the fallen Japanese aristocracy through Kazuko, who has low self–esteem and a critical superego paired with a fear of intimacy at the beginning of the novel, but who eventually finds the will to struggle against her own mind. The Setting Sun opens with Kazuko eating breakfast with her mother in their country home in Japan, and the two have a conversation centered around Naoji, Kazuko's younger brother, who had never come back from fighting in World War II and with whom they had lost all contact (9). Kazuko, in an attempt to comfort her mother, quips that only good people die early, and because he is such a scoundrel, Naoji is not dead. The focus is placed on Kazuko by her mother, however, who jokes that she will therefore die an early death, but Kazuko responds seriously with, "Why should I? I'm bad and ugly both" (10). She is explicitly unsatisfied with her personal behavior and appearance, indicating a severely low self–esteem. This core psychological issue appears again when, after accidentally burning down their shed, Kazuko feels immense and crushing guilt, despite the fire being an honest mistake. She cries from shame and embarrassment, unable to look the villagers who had helped her put the fire out in the eyes (31). She fears their judgement, but she is the one who judges the harshest. Delving further into her psyche, Kazuko's self–esteem issues appear to stem from her superego, which also causes her guilt as she feels her sexual desires are wrong and shameful. Dazai gradually reveals that Kazuko had once been married, but had divorced ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Those concepts assumed that with the limited ability and innate curiosity of human beings, most people rely on media institutions to gain information outside family, neighborhood and workplace. Thus the media organizations have the priority to choose which information is quality enough to be the most important, which is not, and the information emphasized by the media could salience transfer to the public. In comparison to how we derived strength and security in the past, technology now heavily obscures what makes us feel safe. Companies, realizing this, have produced several advertisements that sell their product by making it appear as if it will increase our safety and security. An effective example of this is in Mophie's 2015 Super–bowl commercial titled "All Powerless," where the creative producers linked having a charged phone with the safety and security found in everyday natural laws. The advertisement utilizes sound, shot composition, lighting, and mise en scene in order to distill a sense of both wonderful and terror in the viewer, while at the end providing an antidote to the fear they have created. The antidote is, of course, Mophie's product which allows cell phones to stayed charged for longer. Sound, and lack thereof, throughout the ad is extremely influential to create the sense of chaos that the world has unfortunately found itself in. The advertisement begins with a soft, ominous piano track with no other words being spoken. It creates an unsettling feeling within the viewer, automatically making them seek some sort of comfort; some way to find the security that background music alone stole. The first session I experienced brought on nervousness and uncertainty which led to insecurity. However, the more time I spent listening to my client the more comfortable I became with the role of counselor. Such feelings of comfort brought with it the ability to be more self–aware and client focused in the session. When I was uncomfortable I asked confusing questions, focused too much on how I looked, and lost the ability to attend to my client. I believe I came into these sessions strong in my nonverbal skills and encouragers. Nevertheless, I struggled with focused counseling, reflection of emotions, and setting goals. Intentionality seems to be significant in the growth process; therefore, one of my first actions in response to these reflections will be to create a plan to address my opportunities for growth. The discomfort I experienced in my first couple of sessions stemmed from several different issues. Primarily, these feelings came from nerves. I have wanted to be an LPC for years, and being put in the role of actually counseling made me nervous I would not measure up. Moreover, I feared making the situation for my client worse because of something I would say or ask. Because of these feelings, I lacked professionalism at times during my first session. Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The salience of an issue determines to what degree of importance the audience and the media place on a particular story. The salience of a story in agenda setting determines the salience of the issues within the public agenda (Leckenby). The vividness of presentation is one way to raise the level of salience of an issue. A story that is presented with graphic detail can cause the public perception of the issue involved to greatly increase. If a story is sensationalized by the media, the audience will unconsciously attach themselves to that particular topic. A story that shows graphic details and pictures of the events of that story cause people to feel as if they were a part of that event. For example, pictures of the crash of Flight 800 stick in the audience's mind. This leads the audience to believe that the crash of Flight 800 is an essential story that we must learn more about. The problem with this is that the audience sometimes focuses too heavily on the story to see the issue at hand. This can negatively affect the media's agenda setting power because the story is too detailed for the audience to see the issue behind the story (Baran 302). The position of a story also affects the salience of an issue. If an article on gun violence in schools is on the front page of The Washington Post, the audience perceives that particular story as having great importance within the scheme of current news topics. Which essentially means that without fantasy, there wouldn't be any play. As unnecessarily obvious as that is, the point is fantasy is a theme that has been expertly laced in between each character. At first, it's a bit hard to notice, but nearing the end of this play, the scenes connect so much better. In other words, going looking back through the scenes after finishing the play, is a part of why this play is incredible. It's the amount of tiny details you don't catch onto at first, but then they all smack you in the face after a major line in a scene. In short, fantasy is the key word when you go through this play. Let's look at Stella first. When given the big picture, Stella doesn't seem like the type to associate herself with fantasy and a general sense of uniqueness to her character. She represents the control for the play as the normal character. Much like a science experiment, and like the control, she is very important to compare the change between characters. Throughout the play, her character stays relatively neutral with her interactions with others. So, to see her role in the fantasy, you must look at the big picture and widen it even further. Backing up to the previous statement on how the entire play is in a fantasy setting, that's Stella's role. To clarify, imagine being in Stella's position during Blanche's ... According to it, task performance is essentially linked to goal setting. That means that higher and better task performance may be achieved when goal setting is rationally applied, as clear goals inspire workers on optimal performance. Few words should be said about specifity of the goals which are expexted to be applied. They should be clear to make it possible for any person to analyze one 's own task process. That is particularly important, as far as in the absence of explicit and challenging goals the crewmembers may not even consider their personal goals. Furthermore, goals may significantly enhance the performance of an employee through the learning plans and problem solving approach. As the employee strives to achieve the goal, his motivation and drive inspires him to learn and maximize his efforts to overcome challenging tasks. That is why when CEOs apply the goal–setting program in their company it is necessary to clearly specify the standard of the average number of potholes that can be filled in a day. In addition, one should raise the bar by setting a more challenging task by establishing a standard 20% higher than the average. The implementation of the goal–setting theory constitutes of moderators that would enhance or deteriorate an employee's performance."Feedback, which is the two–way communication between the ... The formal powers and the constitutional position occupied by the institution of the presidency are at the core of all national and international politics (Alexandrova & Timmermans, 2013). The President can serve as Commander–in–chief, nominate and appoint ambassadors, just to name a few of the powers of office. However, there is another power that is often overlooked by most, the power of agenda setting. The Constitution does not directly state this power, but it is heavily implied. This paper scrutinizes the institution of the presidency in line with agenda–setting literature. The agenda setting process relates to a series of streams, circumstances, or activities within public policy institutions and processes. • 42. Agenda Setting Theory And Social Media Natalie Andris Prof. Hetherington COM 126–R6029 15 August 2015 Agenda–Setting Theory and Social Media The agenda–setting theory states that the media influences what people choose to think about. The theory emerged from communication studies and focuses on mass media and setting the public agenda. In the seminal article, McCombs and Shaw (1972) found a high correlation between media agenda and the public agenda through content analysis of a local election. The theorists wanted to discover what types of people are most susceptible to the media agenda through quantitative research. People acquire factual information and learn how important each topic is based on how much is it emphasized by the media. McCombs, Shaw, and subsequent researchers began researching the agenda–setting theory and it is still being developed today to observe how the media influences the public. In 1922 Walter Lippmann argued that mass media has the ability to create images of events in our minds known as the agenda–setting theory. Walter Lippmann was the first person to propose that images can be created in our minds through the actions of other people. In addition, he thought priorities of the media strongly influence the priorities of the public. Lippmann believed the media caused some of the pictures in our heads and allowed future researchers to further develop his ideas. McCombs and Shaw (1972), first conducted an analysis of the 1968 election 's newspaper and television content. McCombs ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
