Discography
The Script have released 4 studio albums; The Script, Science &
Faith, #3 and No Sound without Silence. These albums have been
released since 2008 right up until 2014. Their most successful
singles have topped the charts at number 1 and 2 in various
countries. ‘Hall of Fame’, arguably their most successful single to
date, featuring American musician will.i.am, charted at number 1
in both Ireland and the UK. This single also charted at number 2
in Germany and number 3 in both New Zealand and Switzerland.
The band have released a total of 16 music videos to date and
have released a number of campaigns promoting their biggest
selling singles. Their marketing approach ties in their albums
with their arena tours. This is a clever marketing strategy used
by many artists. The band have followed a trend of releasing 2-3
singles from every studio album.
3. Genre
The genre of the band The Script is
Indie/Alternative rock. Indie rock is a subgenre
of alternative rock. The indie rock genre started
in the UK and America in the early 1980’s. The
audience of The Script will also be interested in
this genre of music as it is similar to what they
make and sing. Other artists that the audience
may like are Lawson, The Fray, One Republic,
Scouting For Girls and Snow Patrol.
The world map was taken off
The Script’s website. It shows
where The Script are playing
their tours. It shows that The
Script are known worldwide, so
the audience won’t just be from
the UK. We need to bare this in
mind when re creating the
music video as the audience for
our video could be from all
across the world.
Common codes and conventions for the genre
Indie/Alternative rock music videos are that they
tend to wear very dark, laid back clothing in the
majority of their videos and live performances this
is also paired alongside quite dark lighting with the
rarity of bright lighting used; in a lot of The Script
music videos they use a contrast between both
bright and dark lighting.
Another common convention is little snippets of
live performances inputted throughout the music
video, mainly during the chorus and when the song
ends. The locations of where the live performances
are normally in quite rebellious places such as on
top of buildings and underground car parks.
Rebelling is a main part of Rock bands and their
music.
Also in Indie/Alternative rock music videos follow a
narrative in their videos, in songs such like ‘The
Man Who Can’t Be Moved’ they follow a story and
it is clear to the audience what the story is about. It
also helps the audience interpret their own ideas
around the song and the narrative.
4. Music Platforms and The Script
Billboard is a massive media brand which is from America but distributed
worldwide. Billboard have a number of media platforms such as magazines,
websites but it is mostly known for it’s music charts.
On the website for Billboard it has an overview page of the script which includes
all the most popular news updates of the artists. It also has further pages on the
band’s history, a biography about them, images and videos. This gives me a
bigger insight into the script’s audience as they are featured on the Billboard’s
website. It infers thatThe Script are very well known as they are featured on the
billboards website and also have featured in the billboard charts.
Billboard magazine does include different genres of music. However, it does
heavily focus on mainstream artists, chart music/pop music. This implies to me
thatThe Script’s genre could be classed as pop music as well as alternative rock
and indie. This means thatThe Script has an audience that could prefer either of
the three music genres. The audience that tends to listen to chart music is
usually varied, mostly from young teenagers to young adults. MoreoverThe
Script’s audience may also be of this age range too.
5. The Record label – Sony
Label Group
Sony Label Group or also known as Sony Music Entertainment is a successful American label company owned by Sony. The
company was first founded in 1929. It is classed as one of the biggest three record labels worldwide, along with Universal
Music Group and Warner Music Group. Sony Music Entertainment has signed many worldwide artists, such as Beyoncé,
Michael Jackson, Whitney Houston, Calvin Harris, Shakira and etc. All these artists are known for songwriting and all their
songs feature in the mainstream charts often. This suggest thatThe Script is also among these artists and is very popular too
as they feature in the mainstream charts too, even though their genre isn’t the classic pop that you would expect to see in the
mainstream charts.
6. The Band Members
The LeadVocalist and Keyboardist:
Danny O'Donoghue
The script has one main singer, Danny O’Donoghue.
Many other bands similar to The Script also only
consists of one main singer. Examples of other bands
with one main singer are Coldplay, Scouting For Girls
and One Republic. Danny is an irish singer-
songwriter and he co-writes The Scripts songs for all
of their albums.
The Lead Guitarist: Mark Sheehan
Mark Sheehan is a childhood friend of Danny
O’Donoghue. In the mid 90’s they became
song writers and production partners. They
worked for a while in LA and they moved back
to Dublin where they partnered with Glen
Power. Marker originally wanted to be a
dancer and at the age of 17 he started
teaching at Digges Performing Art School. He
started the band My Town in 1996 and the
main singer left so Danny O’Donoghue
replaced the main singer.
The Drummer:Glen Power
Glen Power is the drummer in the script. He
has being drumming since a young age and
was later recruited to The Script. Power has
featured on many other artists albums/ songs.
In 1995, he featured on the album
Transmitting Live by Runwig. Also in 2008, he
featured in the album Raised on Songs and
Stories by Red Hurley. He has also been
featured in various more albums since then.
