The document discusses how a media product represents particular social groups. Specifically, the media product is a music magazine focused on rock music. The magazine represents younger audiences across generations with an interest in transgenerational rock music. While not aiming for any specific social status, the creator feels the magazine is more representative of middle to lower classes due to the genre of rock music being more associated with everyday people of these classes. Additionally, due to the genre and production style, the magazine is more relatable to a male audience. Image, color, features, and article styles within the magazine utilize conventions that further represent the target social groups and their interests in the history and artistic aspects of rock music.
1. How does your media
product represent particular
social groups
AYDAN KELLY
2. Which social group is best
represented by my product
I believe my product strongly represents the social groups it was
targeted at and in this respect I am pleased with my product. More
specifically this social group would be fairly young, as is a general
theme in music magazines, however due to the genre and content, I
believe my magazine would span generations in it’s audience. This is
because I intended to appeal far more to interest than age or other
variant, That interest being trans generational rock music (with origins
from original rock and roll) this genre sounds far more inclusive than it
actually is, it is in fact a sustaining, evolving and growing genre which
has in fact persisted behind the scenes ever since its beginnings.
Although I wouldn’t say I have made any attempt to aim at any
specific social status, I do eel my product is more representative of the
middle to lower classes, my reason for this mainly being my genre, as it is
more associated with everyday people of these classes. There are also
some techniques I have used within to amplify this. Also, mainly due to
thee nature of my genre, and the way I have carried out production,
my magazine is more relatable to a male audience.
3. How my use of conventions works
towards this representation
Image- My cover image itself is very confrontational, A style of image typical of my genre, mainly
due to working class bands, associated with working their way up from rough beginnings such as
oasis (also adding to the representation of my audiences interest of my genres history. The main
feature images on my contents and double page spread are a far stronger representation of my
genre as an art form or musical endeavour which are much more representative again of my
audiences interest, due to the instrument and kineticism, implying an energy that goes hand in
hand with my genre.
Colour- The colour scheme I have used is very dark, mainly being red and black, however a
theme I have purposely used is that of a union jack, which I believe is again representative of the
genre and interest in it. But also it is representative of a kind of patriotism associated with music in
such a way that is almost solely found in the lower to middle classes.
Features- The features within my product are very aimed at younger males with an interest in my
genre, as they are mainly for interviews and similar articles, and it would be younger audience
members who would be influenced more by figures within my features.
Article- My article is not particularly representative of any social groups, it is however a fairly
common structure, being an edited question and answer format. However, some of the themes
talked about could be associated with lower, middle classes such as busking
