13. In the end the mini-concerts showed me that we don’t have to focus on what a child cannot do but what we can help them to do or achieve by being patient, understanding and willing to go above and beyond just paper and pencil to make a breakthrough that may be the start of something greater than we may ever know.
Editor's Notes
First we wanted to do a fundraiser for the UCP, however; they were not in need of many supplies. So Sheri spoke to professor Grosia (Ale) and he volunteered a few member of his band to sing a couple songs for the UCP children. We changed it to a concert for the students that attend UCP. And this is what led us to our project .
As I entered UCP of Kissimmee I felt a nervous because I really did not know what to expect. Due to the fact that the kids are all pre-school age I was thinking whether or not they would sit for the presentation? Are the kids going to be bored? What do we do if they start getting up or if they get upset? I don’t think my nerves calmed themselves until we actually began the first show.
How has this experience effected you? This experience truly taught me that students with various conditions can learn to interact together and become educated like many mainstream children. What experiences had the most impact? Like I stated earlier I was very nervous for the unknown. The most impacting part from my experience was when I saw the children will all sorts of disabilities sit nicely with supervision and enjoy a mini concert. Their beautiful faces seemed so drawn on the show that nothing else in the world mattered. What will you take away from the experience? I will take with me the knowledge and understanding that students can learn no matter what their condition may be.
