2. OBSERVATION REPORT
The observation is a worthy aid for future teachers to gain experience in managing
an ESL classroom for children. It is widely known that maintain the control and the
discipline of many kids inside a classroom in an English class is not an easy
activity. Owing to the characteristic behavior at this age. However, there are some
meaningful aspects that could be identify in this process, that provide the observer
models to keep in mind and take advantages of them when he would be in front of
a lesson for kids.
To begin with, the teaching context is one of the main aspects taken into
consideration when an English lesson takes place. It is not a mystery that the
English center of the University of Córdoba provides a comfortable classroom for
teachers and students to have a good learning and teaching process. Moreover, I
had my second phase of observations at the computer science building on the third
floor next to the office of the English center. Despite the fact the room was ok, it
was very risky for children in the starter level taking into account that they are at
the ages of 8-9.
Secondly, the population is another aspect very important for the observer to take
into account. Needless to mention that the course I observed was the first level
with 32 children at ages from 8 to 9, most of them belonging from very wealthy
families. Obviously, they were enrolled in private schools, which mean they have a
good level of English. Furthermore, all kids were in the course because of their
parents. Due to they want to train their kids in order to travel with them to USA on
vacations. But I noticed some negative aspects among the students such as; kids
sometimes do not want to follow the instructions given by the teacher and worse
they have a very sense of prepotency due to their social status.
Another essential aspect to be taken into consideration by the observer should be
the organization of the classroom and the students in order to keep the control of
the class. It is necessary to clarify that this time there were more organization in
the classroom than my previous phase on teenagers. Besides, the teacher was
well prepared and had the patience that requires working with kids. But also, she
keeps the class organized in rows from the begging to the end which helped her to
keep the discipline, even she walked around the room while she was speaking or
the children were working to give them a good feedback about what they were
done.
3. On the other hand the teaching methodology gives to observer a model to follow in
order to have a suitable teaching process. Despite the fact that the content of the
book was appropriate for the level but sometimes it was a strange sequence of
activities. However, the class was too monotonous, taking into account that work
with kids helps teacher to implement games into the classroom even more it was
clear that whole the class was centered on the book and there was no extra
material apart from the one the book provides, the board and the marker. As well
as, the teacher foster the development of the writing and reading skills.
A further point very significant for the observer to follow is the interaction among
the teacher and his/her students also the appropriate distribution of the time for the
activities to carry out. In practice, the teacher I observed was very careful with the
interaction among their students in order not to interrupt the class but also was
aware to give enough time to finish the activities she asked to do. The activities
done were those the book proposed and were assess by the teacher in order to
have grades for the process. Thus, the most involved child in the class has more
grades and is more helped at the end of the course.
Some general issue to keep in mind while a course is carried out is the
organization, its level and its policies. The course I observed was well organized
despite the dangerous place is located, the teacher was every moment taking care
of the kids due to they were assigned to have classes on the third floor because
there are some baths near the classroom. Further Most of the parents of the kids
enrolled in the course were working in the university, so, they had a discount offer
by the English center.
