Social Depression : The Positive Effects Of Social Media
Society uses social media for everything from entertainment to sharing photographs but the most
common use is to communicate with others. But beyond the purpose of communicating with others,
social media also provides opportunities for individuals to use different styles of writings in their
postings. Through some of these writings, people have been able to express themselves by sharing
issues they have experienced. Some of these individuals suffer from various forms of depression
but, with the growth of social media, these individuals have found an outlet to express themselves
and, sometimes, help alleviate their symptoms. These writings have shown numerous positive
effects on depressed individuals, including leading them down a path to healing. Depression can rear
its ugly head in people's lives at any moment. According to Hendrick (2010), the Center of Disease
Control reported that approximately 9% of Americans over the age of 12 suffer from depression.
With nearly 1 out of 10 Americans suffering from depression, where are all of these people? Can
someone recognize depression when it is not obviously apparent? These individuals loom all around
us, keeping quiet. However, the growing rise of social media has lifted the dark veil and revealed the
identity of some of these individuals. Those suffering from depression have been expressing
themselves increasingly through the use of social media as an outlet. In turn, social media has
provided positive effects for

Suicidal Ideation Paper
Psychological assessment provides counsellors with an objective point of view, meaning that
therapist bias will be minimized. According to Briere and Scott (2015), structured interviews are
designed to help counsellors avoid overlooking symptoms or inadequately assessing a client,
whereas the use of unstructured interviews may cause the counsellor to miss crucial information as
there are no guidelines to follow. A structured interview will be used to ensure that no aspects of Ms.
Wuornos' case are overlooked. There is a significant relationship between childhood physical and
sexual abuse and suicidal ideation. Suicide ideators are individuals who have plans and wishes to
commit suicide, but have not yet made any recent attempts. Since suicide ideation precedes suicide
attempt, it is important to focus on the intensity, pervasiveness and characteristics of the ideation in
order to assess suicidal intention and to predict future suicidal risk (article). The Scale for Suicidal
Ideation is a 19–item scale that will be used to quantify the intensity of current suicidal intent by
scaling various dimensions of self–destructive thoughts (Beck & Kovacs, 1979). ... Show more

Mental Health And Adolescents With Depression / Depression
Mental Health in Adolescents
The patient is a thirteen year old female diagnosed with depression/ depression NOS. She is in the
hospital for attempting to kill herself by stabbing her stomach with a knife. She had been there for
almost a week when the assessment was conducted. Hand off states she sees things in the shadows
(visual hallucinations), and she was molested by her thirty year old cousin and sodomised by her
neighbor when she was four. Her home situation is not a therapeutic one, her and one of her
mother's fights constantly, and see feels her mother is two faced and she cannot talk to this mother
about her feelings. The patient is very shy, and just wants to draw ninja turtles, but through
therapeutic communication and observation she began to open up. She is dressed appropriate for the
weather, and has a good understanding of advance vocabulary, but does go off on her own to look
outside a lot. The full assessment can be found in the appendix at the end of the paper. The aim of
this study is to describe priority nursing diagnoses, outcomes, and interventions, tests, labs and
medications for this patient, the patient's diagnosis according to the DSM–V and then examine a
nursing article that relates to this patient.

The Importance Of Human Relationship For Both Kai And Tamili
1) The duty to protect the well–being of Kai versus importance of human relationship for both Kai
and Tamili. I chose this as the ethical problem because it seems as though Kai could use some help
with her well–being. She has a lot on her plate with being in a strong recovery from bi–polar (I)
disorder, her husband being deployed for the four time to Iraq, she has had suicidal ideation two
within the past month, trying to take on a new job as a principal, and in sessions she becomes
stressed very easily and shuts down. I've noticed when Kai gets stressed in family session Tamili
will get very angry. Kai being stressed could be causing Tamili to act out in school and receive bad
grades. This is why I chose the importance of human relationship as the other problem. Kai and
Tamili have bonded very well but with Kai being so stressed lately it could be affect Tamili's
performances at school. Tamili has been bulling others at school, has low grades, and is being very
disrespectful to her teachers.
2) a. I would want to ask Kai's close friends and family how she is currently handling life. With her
fiancé being deployed, with the possibly of become a school principle and Tamili not preforming
well in school. Asking the person who is mentoring Kai for the school principal position how Kai
seems to take on the workload. Is Kai stressed when more work is given to her, does she take on any
work troth at her to distract her from other things. I would then want to ask Kai how Tamili is

College Is A Time In Which People Are First Discovering
College is a time in which people are first discovering who they are, and what they would like to do
with the rest of their lives. It is a point where for the first time in these young adults' lives they are
living on their own and actively making their own life decisions. These young adults are thrown into
a world that seems so foreign to anything they have known, and so many new things are thrown
their way that they just have to decide and do. The sudden newness of it all can cause many stressors
amongst a wide margin of students who attend college. This new found stress may begin to
gradually increase over time, which then leads to many college students developing depression. The
depression experienced more often than not goes ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
They may instead be partaking in activities that negatively suppress their depressive emotions. They
lash out in aggressive emotions, or turn to alcohol and illegal substances. In fact, 45 % of college
students end up binge drinking, and 25 % abuse drugs, both prescription and illegal (Tartakovsky).
There is a stigma behind depression that makes admitting to the disease something that people just
do not do out of their own will. This sense of shame then results in a large number of people going
around undiagnosed and untreated for something as serious as depression. There needs to be a
stronger conversation about how real depression is and how important it is to get help to treat it. The
lack of a conversation being had is hurting college students further than their depression (Li). Due to
some colleges not having accessible counseling services, or mental health programs, it helps in the
results of self–treatment of student's depression. Or simply due to the fact that some students do not
know that they either have depression, or that there are services at their colleges that are there to
help them. More colleges need to have outreach programs to help students to understand that it's
okay to seek help and that there are many ways to manage their stress. Ways that do not include
harming themselves and their bodies. It is statistically likely that if all of this stress begins to add up,
suicidal thoughts may begin to occur. This is a serious downfall to

Reflection Of A Client Analysis
Introduction The purpose of this paper is to compare and contrast my interactions between the
clients' I used in my process recording. I used two different people for these recordings because we
usually only see each court–mandated client once at the City of Tempe which is for the DUI
(Driving Under the Influence) screening and/or ASI (assessment/screening and intake), which
determines how many hours of education and/or training needs to be completed by the client to
satisfy the court. Clients The client in my first process recording was a 31 year old female who

When he began discussing suicidal ideations, I felt like I might be out of my scope of practice. I
knew my supervisor wouldn't be back for a week, and her supervisor was out for the day. I knew I
had no one to turn to, and had to do this myself. When I didn't know what to do about something he
said, I would ask another question, or back track, or clarify. I would do anything I could to stall in a
professional manner until I could figure out what to do. Then I thought about you and CBT, so I
thought I would give that a try, if nothing else, I could explain it. All of a sudden the problem
saturated story came into my head (which was killing time, but creating a visual aid). That had to be
my most challenging client so far. I had never dealt with ex–communication, shunning, Jehovah's

College Student's Perception Of Depressed Mood
Summary: College Student's Perception of Depressed Mood
By: Nicole Puglisi, Leslie Ryan, and Allan Koikoi
Component One: Background Information The article "College Students ' Perceptions of Depressed
Mood: Exploring Accuracy and Associations" by Irene M. Geisner and colleagues, relate college
experiences (i.e., drinking, drug use, etc) to moods and behaviors to determine if students under–,
over–, or correctly estimate the prevalence of sadness, depression, and suicide ideation in
themselves and other students. A well as how their gender is associated to these findings. Moreover,
this article focuses on the field of psychology and the objective of this article is to convey the
multiple factors that coincide with the determination of depressive moods/behaviors, and how a
student is able to detect these moods/behaviors in others. For example, some students predicted an
overestimate of sadness, depression, and suicidal tendencies in their peers because of the other
negative factors associated with these cognitive tendencies, such as substance abuse, relationship
abuse, and drinking after driving. Gender also plays a role in this study, as researchers predicted that
males had a tendency to underestimate sadness, depression, and suicidal tendencies because of
previous studies. Overall, factors such as gender and lifestyle choices, can influence students and
their ability to predict sadness, depression, and suicidal tendencies, which is displayed throughout
the article and in

Suicide Can Be A Difficult Topic To Discuss. Especially
Suicide can be a difficult topic to discuss. Especially if one has known someone who has committed
suicide. Suicide does not discriminate and happens anywhere that life exists. According to
Rosenberg (1999),"Suicide is the 8th leading cause of death overall in the United States. For the
elderly, it is the 13th, and for the young (15–24) it is it the 3rd leading cause of death" (pp. 83–87).
The increasing rate of suicide has called implementations of suicide prevention plans. Prevention
plans are not only in place for schools systems, there are many different suicide prevention plans
pertaining to different groups of people. In this paper, I'm going to discuss a suicide prevention plan
in a school system, a family prevention plan, and then ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The staff members that implement the program do not have educational, mental health training, or
licensure requirements. However, program kits are required. The program kits are about $400. The
kits are full of useful information and resources. Some of the things that are included are program
implementation guides, student response cards, Will to Live packets, student newsletters, access to
online resources, and the Brief Screen for Adolescent Depression (BSAD) forms. The program also
has an interactive training module online for school staff and supporters.
Research on this program has shown a favorable outcome of reduced suicide. "At a 3–month
posttest, it was found that intervention high school students were less likely than control students to
report having had suicidal thoughts and suicide attempts" ("SAMHSA," 2014). Results were taken
from questionnaires. This program, however, is ineffective for increasing the receipt of mental
health and/or substance abuse treatment and ineffective for increasing social competence related to
help seeking behaviors ("SAMHSA," 2014). Overall the program showed improved in suicidal
thoughts and behaviors and knowledge, attitudes, and beliefs about mental health.
The next model is the Family Intervention for Suicide Prevention (FISP). The FISP is a cognitive
behavioral family intervention for youth ages 10–18 who have thought about suicide or tried to
attempt it. These children have been brought to an

Dealing With Suicidal Ideations
Working with a client who reports suicidal ideations can come in different forms, but can potentially
lead to a crisis if left unaddressed. Monaghan and Harris (2015) discussed suicide intervention from
the beginning of a therapeutic relationship by building a working and trusting relationship,
collaborating with the client, conducting regular risk assessments, involving social support, and
establishing a specific intervention style. There are three specific intervention styles were reported
by Monaghan and Harris (2015): solution–focused therapy, cognitive behavioral therapy, and
dialectical behavior therapy. Solution–focused therapy helps the client focus on the solution rather
than the problem, strengths rather than weaknesses, and the positives instead of the negatives.
Cognitive behavioral therapy helps the clients alter their way of thinking about their situation with
the goal of altering the client's feelings and behaviors. Dialectical behavior therapy challenges
dysfunctional behaviors to help the clients change patterns of behaviors that are not ... Show more

that it was a good session.
Personal Disclosure: Before beginning my session, I ensured that my client knew that I am not a

Suicidal Ideation is the Preoccupation with Suicidal Thoughts
Suicidal ideation is a medical term for thoughts about or an unusual preoccupation with suicide. The
range of suicidal ideation varies greatly from fleeting to detailed planning, role playing, and
unsuccessful attempts, which may be deliberately constructed to fail or be discovered, or may be
fully intended to result in death. Although most people who undergo suicidal ideation do not go on
to make suicide attempts, a significant proportion do.[1] Suicidal ideation is generally associated
with depression; however, it seems to have associations with many other psychiatric disorders, life
events, and family events, all of which may increase the risk of suicidal ideation. Recurrent suicidal
behavior and suicidal ideation is a hallmark of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Moreover, these drugs' intended effects can themselves have the unintended or undesired
consequence of an increased individual risk and collective rate of suicidal behavior: Among the set
of persons taking the medication, a subset feel bad enough to want to commit suicide (or to desire
the perceived results of suicide) but are inhibited by depression–induced symptoms, such as lack of
energy and motivation, from following through with an attempt. Among this subset, a "sub–subset"
may find that the medication alleviates their physiological symptoms (such as lack of energy) and
secondary psychological symptoms (e.g., lack of motivation) before or at lower doses than it
alleviates their primary psychological symptom of depressed mood. Among this group of persons,
the desire for suicide and/or its effects persists even as major obstacles to suicidal action are
removed, with the effect that the incidences of suicide attempt and of completed suicide increase.

Life events
Life events are strong predictors of increased risk for suicidal ideation. Furthermore, life events can
also lead to or be comorbid with the previous listed psychiatric disorders and predict suicidal
ideation through those means. Life events that adults and children face can be dissimilar and for this
reason, the list of events that increase

Suicide Presents Challenges For Social Work
Suicide presents challenges for social work researchers as they seek answers and causative agents.
Obviously, the victim is not available to provide answers to the many questions that suicide creates.
However, there are other "victims" of suicide – family, friends, and colleagues that may be able to
provide insights. The search for data typically begins with reviewing death certificates for cause of
death. From there, a technique known as psychological autopsy is used to recreate the state of mind
and health of the victim and any external environment causes of the suicide. The process is typically
more qualitative in data gathering since one of the primary techniques involves interviews with
individuals who knew the suicide victim. However, as pointed out by Rubin and Babbie, use of
qualitative data does not rule out the use of quantative techniques to refine and bin the data sets (text
p. 564–5). For example, age, gender, or socioeconomic data gathered during the interview process
may lead to insights when the data are binned and searched for trends or distributions. This is also
the case when medical records are available that may provide other insights to concomitant illnesses
and quantative analyses are performed. Psychological autopsies have revealed that more than 90%
of suicides involve coexisting mental disorders; predominantly mood and/or substance use disorders
(Isometsä ET, 2001, para. 1). Medical records and physical autopsies may soon provide other

If Manuel's answers demonstrate imminent danger, emergency services should be called
immediately and all information gathered from the initial conversation should be documented.
For the purposes of this paper, an assumption that Manuel is not in immediate danger is made, and
he chooses to sign a written contract stating that he will not make any attempt on his life before
having another discussion with a counselor. While a written contract cannot guarantee that Manuel
will not choose to harm himself during this period, adolescents who sign this type of contract will
typically comply. At this point, a follow–up meeting is scheduled, which will allow time to consider
the assessment information in formulating the scope of the problem, and provide intervention
strategies for Manuel's continued treatment (McWhirter et al., 2017).
Consultation and Supervision In order to provide Manuel with the best therapeutic approaches,
colleagues should be consulted, who are willing to question the intervention strategies from not only
a therapeutic perspective, but also keeping in mind ethical and legal guidelines (McWhirter et al.,
2013). One method of consultation that is proving to be helpful is the formation of consultations
groups who "serve many functions for the clinician, including the development and refinement of

Double Abc X Model And Suicide Risk Assessment
The Virgin Suicides relates the story of the Lisbon family and the multiple crises they face,
particularly acute suicidal risk of all five daughters. The family consists of the father, Ronald, the
mother, and five sisters, Cecilia, Lux, Bonnie, Mary, and Therese. The family experiences both
major and minor crisis events throughout the film, ultimately ending with all five daughters
completing suicide. While there were numerous individuals experiencing a crisis, the neighborhood
boys, the entire Lisbon family, and several other minor characters, this review will focus specifically
on crisis incidents that surround the mother and two daughters, Cecilia and Lux. This analysis will
utilize the Double ABC–X model and suicide risk assessment.
Cecilia
Cecilia is the youngest of the Lisbon daughters, being only thirteen. She is slight, thin and plain. She
is quirky, as evident by her wearing the same wedding style dress throughout her entire appearance
in the film, as well as precocious and introverted. She is an environmentalist, as evident by her
reaction to the condemning of the tree in her front yard, her grief about the fact that a frog was
added to the endangered species list, and her overall fascination with nature discussed in her diary.
Cecilia appears alienated from her family, perhaps misunderstood because of her drastically
different personality. In regards to Cecilia's initial crisis that involves her suicide attempt, by means
of exsanguination through wrist

patients and depressive symptoms negatively influence the social skills of the patient. It is found that
depressed patients are less likely to look at their partner during conversation, and speak less in a low

Side Effects Of Self-Harm Research Paper
Bleeding out. Scarred from head to toe. These are a couple of side effects of self–harm inflicted by
adolescents. Some mental causes for self–harm are depression, anxiety, and mood disorders. Self–
harm is currently a major concern, and there have been many moves recently to combat it. Two of
the more significant treatments developed that assist adolescents with their self–harming behaviors
are Cognitive Behavior Therapy (CBT) and Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) (Laye–Gindhu &
Schonert–Reichl, 2005). Before discussing these treatment options, an understanding of what self–
harm truly means is crucial. "Self–harm, [is] defined here as deliberate and voluntary physical self–
injury that is not life–threatening and is without any conscious suicidal intent" (Laye–Gindhu &
Schonert–Reichl, 2005, p. 447). "According to population studies, between 5% and 10 % of
adolescents report past–year self–harm" (Mehlum, et al. 2016, p. 1082). Some of the more well–
known forms of self–harm are "cutting, hitting, biting," (Laye–Gindhu & Schonert–Reichl, 2005, p.
453) and other non–suicidal actions – scarifications are among more publicly–recognized type.
Adolescents hurt themselves in these ways because it gives them a way to physically deal with the
emotions they experience; this makes sense, since inflicting injuries to yourself that are severe ...

Projected Outcomes
Contributing Factors:
According to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC, 2016), a strong positive correlation exists
between the number of adverse events in a child's life and the probability of negative outcomes as
they grow from adolescence into adulthood (cdc.gov). Adverse events in the life of the Native
American (NA) begin with existing in rural areas, on a reservation with uncertain socioeconomic
growth. For all NA residents, reservation life has considerable exposure to suicide and is one of the
many contributing factors to its occurrence and the rising epidemic (Bazrafshan, Sharif, Molazem,
& Mani, 2016).
Numerous risk factors for suicidal ideation, attempt and completion can vary across age groups,

Living in poverty on a reservation, dietary intake is poor, creating obesity, which increases the risk
of diabetes, early death, and substance abuse rates that are higher than the national average

isolation create extreme mental and emotional anguish, becoming exceedingly unbearable;
magnifying the prevalence of suicide in the NA population.
The Native American individuals' emotional and mental variability has evolved out of Western

throughout many generations. This diverse population has experienced negativity, and alterations
from social, political and economic institutions, changing a generations' cultural existence resulting
in decreased self–esteem, a non–self–sustaining population, resulting in enormous unresolved

The Suicidal Ideation Questionnaire
Review of the Suicidal Ideation Questionnaire by BELINDA B. STRAUSS, Mississippi State
University, Mississippi State, United States of America: DESCRIPTION. The Suicidal Ideation
Questionnaire (SIQ) is a self–report assessment designed to determine an adolescent's present level
of suicidal ideation. Adolescents completing the SIQ are asked to report how often they have
suicidal thoughts. There are two forms of the SIQ, the SIQ and the SIQ–JR. The SIQ, a 30–item
scale, is developed for senior high school students in grades 10 – 12, and the SIQ–JR, a 15–item
scale, is developed for junior high school students in grades 7 – 9. The SIQ is reported to require 5–
10 minutes to complete and can be used in both large scale screening as well as individual
assessment. The SIQ seeks to assess thoughts of suicide, or suicidal ideation and not suicidal
behavior. As such, test administers are instructed to refer to individuals with high scores as scoring
high in suicidal ideation and not as "suicidal."
DEVELOPMENT. Suicidal ideation as a construct is defined as the domain of thoughts and ideas
about: death, suicide, and serious self–injurious behaviors, including thoughts related to the
planning, conduct, and outcome of suicidal behavior. 150 moderately to severely depressed
adolescents and young adults were interviewed in a clinical setting in order to construct specific

The Causes Of Suicidal Ideation
Suicidal Ideation
Most suicidal people do not want death, they just want the pain to stop, so how can the pain they
feel be resolved? The point of my paper is to find out the reasons that people become suicidal and
how to prevent it from happening. People contemplate suicide till the end so by understanding the
source of their pain, it is possible to prevent the unfortunate outcome of suicide. Don't ignore even
the smallest of signs of suicide.
Suicidal ideation is the idea of ending one's life. "Suicidal ideations may be the result of loss,
anxiety disorders, depression, substance abuse, and problems in other areas of a person's life that
feel so overwhelming suicide seems like the only way to cope [Pacific Grove Hospital]." People in
painful situations struggle to find solutions to end their suffering.
People who are suicidal can often be very manipulative with their emotions, hiding their darkest
thoughts and instead showing everyone "happiness," so how do we really know if someone is
showing suicidal symptoms? Some symptoms include change in appetite, substance abuse, distance
from once loved things, self criticism, psychosis, paranoia, talking about death. Suicide ideations are
often a symptom of result of undiagnosed or untreated mental health disorders [Valley Behavioral].
Suicidal people may be manipulative with their emotions, but they can't put on a happy face at every
moment, so watch them carefully and confront them when you see some of the symptoms or dual
disorders.
The causes for suicide are not thought to be the result of a single factor, but rather the combined
forces of genetic, physical, and environmental risk factors. Individuals who have a family history of
mental illnesses do have a higher risk, however this is not always the case. "The effects of genetics
on suicide are due to inheriting mental illness and by inheriting traits. Several mental illnesses have
genetic influences and increase the risk of suicide. These include depression, bipolar disease,
schizophrenia, and some types of anxiety [Dr. Pat, About Kids Health]." Genetics have a large
influence on suicidal thoughts and mental illnesses, although it's not something you can prevent, you
can protect yourself and others

His brother died due to a car accident and he has been blamed by his father to be the cause of his

worse. He has fallen out with his father
Reflection
Depression was one of the common presenting complaints during our postings. It is found that one
fifth of the Scottish population will experience depression at some point in their lives. The severity
can range from mild disturbances to a severe illness with a high risk of suicide.
Detecting depression is essential in general practice and to even raise the topic can be difficult.
Patients feel reluctant to raise such distressing issues up till it gets severe and so their concerns
remain unvoiced. Some on the other hand resist the idea of the possible diagnosis and not want

Suicide : The Causes Of Suicidal Ideation
According to John Harris and Vicky White, suicidal ideation a disorder in which an individual
experiences thoughts of suicide. Suicide is defined as a "deliberate act of causing one's own death".
They identify several distinct factors that assist in suicidal thoughts. Individuals who experience
overpowering feelings of hopelessness and depression, alcoholics, substance abusers, those facing
financial troubles, and those having difficulties with social relationships. In Gale Encyclopedia's
article, Suicide, the author shares that Americans who have committed suicide, more often than not,
have a major mental illness. Suicidal ideation is linked to bipolar affective disorder, as sufferers
from bipolar disorder might experience these suicidal thoughts. Gale Encyclopedia identifies the
concept of diathesis, which is "a medical term for a predisposition that makes some people more
vulnerable to thoughts of suicide." The author explains that, by using a stress/diathesis model,
professionals have been attempting to decipher what makes certain people consider suicide, while
others don't. Gale Encyclopedia identifies the following factors in the stress/diathesis model: family
stressors (including divorce and economic hardships), a loss of a socially accepted moral system, the
decline of religion and other social groups outside of the family structure, geographic moves, a
greater idealization of suicide in the media, and methods like firearms, tall buildings, and
medications that

Australia Suicide Statistics
Australian statistics say that for every suicide completed there are 30 that have attempted. It is good
to know the warning signs of suicide for risk management and suicide prevention. When people
have suicidal thoughts you may hear them saying things like, "life isn't worth living", "everyone will
be better without me", "I cant deal with this anymore", "I would be better dead" or "nobody
understands me"; if you hear people saying a few of the following you should definitely look deeper
into it. Suicide is the most serious symptom of server depression, warning signs of
depression/suicide would be sad moods, change in persons weight or appetite, loss of interest the
feeling of worthlessness, thoughts of death and self destructive behavior e.g. self medicating. When
coming across these symptoms it is best to ask clear and direct questions, it may seem hard to bring
the topic up; but it is best for the client to know that someone does care and is noticing. Some
conversation starters you can use are "I have been feeling concerned about you lately ", "I just
wanted to see if everything is okay, you haven't been yourself lately" when client tells you how they
feel you should go deeper by asking when they started feeling the way they do, how can I support
you. You must be supportive and let them know that they are not alone that we are here and that they
wont feel like that forever.
There is always something that lies behind the thought of suicide, no one wakes up in the

Risk Essay
(1)
The following study discusses the risk & resilient factors in the life of Pauline, a 16 year old
NZ European/Maori teenager.
These factors involve her family life and its importance to her: the value of education and the
consequences of leaving school without qualifications; how activities such as church participation
can be helpful and the problems involved with having nothing to do; the effects of substance abuse;
early sexual involvement and its risks; the risk of suicide, suicide attempts & ideation. The
likely impacts of all of these factors on her current & future health status will be considered.
Key words or concepts: resilience or protective factors: is factors that buffer young people from

Pauline expresses that there is a lot of arguing with her Dad & Stepmother. This provides risk
for her as serious conflict between caregivers and children can put them at the risk of the problem
behaviours (Channing Bete Company 2004). The separation of a child's parents can put him/her at
risk especially if there are a lot of changes or that the child does not have a good relationship with at
least one parent (Burt 2002). It has been indicated in a study that girls in two parent families are less
likely to act out risky behaviours than those in single parent families. (M.D. Resnick et al 1993).
Children or adolescents who are well reasonably well adjusted after divorce nearly always come
from an environment where there is a firm, responsive, nurturing, supportive adult (Henderson
2002). Pauline's recent history is shows this sort of environment has not been there for her. A factor
that protects an adolescent is having an adult in her life she can trust and with whom she can
confide. The presence of an adult Mentor in an adolescents life helps reduce the participation in risk
taking behaviours. (Beier et al 2000). Pauline reports having a close relationship with her Aunty
Sarah who lives down the road with her Nan. She is able to confide with Aunty Sarah and feels close
to her. This is a significant protective factor for Pauline.

Cyberbullying And Youth Suicide Ideation And Attempts Essay
Methodology
The purpose of my study would be to see the correlation between cyberbullying and youth suicide
ideation and attempts. This study aimed to examine adolescents' experiences with cyberbullying
because, "victims of cyberbullying often report feeling frustrated, angry, and depressed" (Patchin &
Hinduja, 2010). Cyberbullying can have a negative impact on a youth's life and by conducting this
study we can gain a better understanding of how cyberbullying manifests itself in adolescence 's
behavior, including suicidal thoughts and attempts. I would use a mixed methods approach to
examine various aspects of cyberbullying, including students' involvement in cyberbullying,
reporting behaviors, and suicidal ideation or attempts. To gain more detailed information on the
effects of cyberbullying on youths ' suicidal ideation and attempts, I would utilize both quantitative
and qualitative data. Since cyberbullying itself is a complex issue combining both quantitative and
qualitative data can help to enhance the theory of the research.
Sampling
Participates will be students from five middle schools within the five boroughs of New York. I will
collect data from 80 students, ages 11 to 14 (40 females, 40 males). Students will be chosen by
school staff at the middle schools who expressed interested in participating in cyberbullying studies.
Once participates are chosen I (the researcher) will make the visit to the schools to conduct the
study. In the study, pupils will be told

Suicidal Behavior And Suicidal Ideation
"Suicidal behavior and suicidal ideation continue to be recognized as significant health concerns
among adolescents and you adults". In fact, globally, suicide impacts adolescents making it the
second leading cause of death. As a result, researchers continue examining aspects associated with
suicide attempts fir preventative purposes. Furthermore, understanding the definition a suicide
attempt in adolescents helps bring clarity to the importance of this issue. Anju and Subha define an
adolescent suicide attempt as "am adolescent (13–19 years of age) who had made a deliberate act
serious arm of suicide, researchers continue seeking preventative measures for adolescent'. Because
of the increase in suicide ideation and attempted ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In addition, researchers examine the correlation of family history of suicide and/or suicide attempt
versus a family history of mental illness. Results to show adolescents with a family history hold a
higher risk of suicide, but mental illness remains an independent risk factor associated with suicide.
Understanding family history and mental illness proves vital with guiding and assisting adolescents
who attempt suicide, as well as realizing that adolescents need supportive and meaningful
relationships. Lack of support in close relationships identities as one if the major risk factors
associated with adolescents who attempt suicide. During adolescence, individuals need guidance
from friends, teachers, parents/ guardians, and/or school counselors to grow, reflect, confide, etc.
Through an interview process, Latakiene & Skruibis, discover that all three participants who
attempted suicide lost a close relationship and felt alone. Researchers' evidence suggests "involving
and strengthening adolescent's relationship" reduces the risk of suicide. As a result, knowing the risk
factors associated with adolescents who attempt suicide aids adolescents in the healing process. In
addition to knowing the risk factors associated with suicide, understanding coping skills, or lack
thereof, in adolescents who attempt suicide provides educators, adolescents, and families valuable
information. Coping Skills Unfortunately, adolescents who attempt suicide lack positive

Amy Post Traumatic Stress Disorder Case Study
Adolescent health has become an increasingly important focus in the last few years because health
needs in this cohort have changed considerably (Sanci, Glover, & Coffey, 2003). Raphael (1996)
pointed towards an increasing and disproportionate rise in psychosocial problems affecting youth
and Brown (2002) posits that health problems and health compromising behaviours are interrelated
in this cohort. It is important to look beyond the presenting issue and assess the adolescent taking
into account their developmental stage, risk and protective factors and resiliency (McNeely,
Nonnemaker, & Blum, 2002). Amy*, an 18 year old female came to my office through a local

On the other hand, circumstances and behaviours which lead to positive outcomes in the lives of
some 'at–risk' adolescents are called protective factors. Resilience is the ability to access and
mobilise protective resources that counteract risks (Rew & Horner, 2003). An important part of
planning a response to an adolescent's situation is to identify their needs. An assessment for these
factors must be part of the screening process to facilitate early detection and health promotion in
young people (Sanci et al., 2003). An immediate at–risk factor for Amy is suicide ideation. This
requires careful assessment and a direct unambiguous line of questioning. Hawton and James (2005)
point towards a strong link between suicide and previous self harm. Resnick et al. (1997) in their
longitudinal study posit that increased risk of early sexual debut was associated with suicide

Stereotyping in Relation to Suicidal Ideation
Environmental stressors associated with suicide include unemployment, poverty, family, or
friendship stressors such as relationship conflict or break–up, and illness or death of loved ones.
Some stressors have differential effects for men and women, such as unemployment (Ying & Chang,
2009). If suicide death in most of the world is strikingly male, the non–fatal suicidal behavior is
predominantly female, although the gender difference is less dramatic (Nock, Borges, Bromet,
Alonso, Angermeyer, Beautrais, & Gluzman, 2008).
As stated above, stereotyping may establish a linkage between certain life stressors and suicidal
behaviors, which may influence vulnerable people to copy others' suicide through ... Show more

The currency of suicidal ideation whether adolescents endorsed that they were still thinking about
killing themselves was associated with lower odds of future suicidal attempts in a full model that
includes all variable (Miranda, Ortin, Scott, & Shaffer, 2014). The significance of the current study
is to explore the growing problem among youth today which is suicide and must be tracked to view
suicide ideation in a deeper understanding that therefore it deserves new findings. In line with the
above–listed literature regarding suicidal ideation factors that were simultaneously examined, the
researchers would like to know how adolescents develop suicidal ideation. This will be supported by
three sub–questions:
1. Have they ever opened up about suicidal ideation?
2. Do people with suicidal ideation perceive suicide as a way out of life?
3. Are people with suicidal ideation at risk of committing suicide?

developmental and mental health status.
To gather information about Tim's current developmental and mental position I would use my active

his body language towards me and his difficulty in keeping eye contact. Once Tim feels a little bit
more comfortable in this situation asking open ended questions could help gain an understanding of
where he feels he is regarding his mental state and finding out all possible details that I can. An
example of an open ended question that I could ask Time would be 'can you tell me more about the

Theories About Perfectionism And Suicidal Ideation, And...
The psychological study by Paul.L Hewitt and Gordon L.Flett investigated the theory about
perfectionism and suicidal ideation, and its dimensions on depressed adolescent patients. According
to this article, we could say that researchers used for this study correlational method, which
comprises sample data based on five independent variables such as perfectionism, stress, daily
hassles, hopelessness, and suicide potential. The sample data consisted of 55 adolescents, who
completed the procedures which have been associated with some indices of life stress, hopelessness,
and one of the main problems of adolescence which is suicide ideation and potential. In addition,
that was also attended by the parents of those teenagers who were interviewed to analyze their major
stressful situations. As a result, these methods are given to understand that there are two models of
perfectionism, such as self–oriented perfectionism, which is not correlated with suicide; and socially
prescribed perfectionism, which eventually showed that it is associated with a potential suicide.
Hierarchical regression also suggests that self–oriented perfectionism is not much of a threat to
commit suicide, but socially prescribed perfectionism on the contrary has a link between suicide and
depression. These findings conclude that socially prescribed perfectionism is one of the serious
predictors of suicide attempt among adolescents in depression. There are five independent

How have your perceptions about and prior experience with depression, grief and suicide been
challenged by the information presented?
During my nursing career, I have worked in many high stress areas (ex; labor and delivery, where
not every outcome is great, medical surgical unit, where a lot of people would get diagnosed with
pancreatic cancer, and neurosurgical unit, where I took care of many young individuals affected by
glioblasoma multiforme) where my patients were depressed (acute depression) due to their diagnosis
and were not sure how to cope with their situation. I did have several suicidal patients, as well.
Reflecting on this week's readings, especially on Meghan's pp presentations, I must admit that I have
to learn more about different depression and suicide tools that are available. That is going to help me
not only in my current practice but also in the future.

Suicide Is The Second Most Common Form Of Death Essay
Suicide is the second–most common form of death in adolescence. Flip through any peer–reviewed
journal article, and you will see that this is not just a myth. In fact, in Canada, 10.3 adolescent males
and females take their life for every 100,000 people in the national population every year (WHO,
2007). In the United States, that number is almost double at 17.8 adolescent males and females for
every 100,000 individual aged 15–24 (WHO, 2007). For over the last decade, researchers from all
parts of the world have been at work trying to piece together what it is that triggers and pushes
teenagers into making the ultimate decision and take their life. In Norway, researchers came up with
four possible factors: the parents regarding poor communication, previous suicidal ideation, alcohol
and drug abuse, and frequency and variances of depression and mental disorder developments
(Herrestad, Mehlum, & Nrugham). In support of the finding, adolescents in Thailand who had
attempted suicide claimed that they had done so due to severe parenting criticisms, which threw
them into a state of depression and rendered them uncontrollable of their actions and emotions
(Arunpongpaisal, Rungreangkulkij, & Sukhawaha, 2016). In another study conducted in the United
States, Caucasian and Hispanic adolescents between the ages of 13 and 18 claimed they were 1 1/2
times more likely to have suicidal thoughts if they fell into an addiction with alcohol after having
been sexually assaulted (Behnken,

pain perception, sleep disruption in relation to pain, and the importance of one expressing his or her

family and friends, expressing one 's internal world, and maintaining a social scene are important for
those suffering from chronic pain. Factors that Contribute to Chronic Pain and

Indications of Suicidality and Preventative Measures Because of the lasting nature of chronic pain,
one who is suffering from it may feel depressed and even suicidal. Research suggests that there is an
increased risk of suicidal ideation among individuals with chronic pain (Wilson, Kowal, Henderson,
McWilliams, & Pe 'loquin 2013, para. 1). Moreover, it is hypothesized that for an individual the risk
is higher if he or she feels isolated or that he or she is a burden to others (Wilson et al. 2013, para.
2). Such predictions appear to be plausible as lasting pain has a tendency to impede greatly on one 's
social life. Further, it is important to note that studies have also indicated that pain severity and
suicidal ideation do not always correlate (Wilson et al. 2013, para. 20). In other words, someone
with "severe" pain may not experience suicidal ideation, but someone with "mild" pain may
experience suicidal ideation. This finding is important as one may assume that a higher level of pain
equals a higher likelihood of suicidal thoughts and actions, but this may not always be the case.
Thus, it is important that health professionals as well as friends and family members caring for those
suffering from chronic pain acknowledge their suffering even if their pain is not categorized as
severe. Other preventative measures to suicide

  • 3. Social Depression : The Positive Effects Of Social Media Society uses social media for everything from entertainment to sharing photographs but the most common use is to communicate with others. But beyond the purpose of communicating with others, social media also provides opportunities for individuals to use different styles of writings in their postings. Through some of these writings, people have been able to express themselves by sharing issues they have experienced. Some of these individuals suffer from various forms of depression but, with the growth of social media, these individuals have found an outlet to express themselves and, sometimes, help alleviate their symptoms. These writings have shown numerous positive effects on depressed individuals, including leading them down a path to healing. Depression can rear its ugly head in people's lives at any moment. According to Hendrick (2010), the Center of Disease Control reported that approximately 9% of Americans over the age of 12 suffer from depression. With nearly 1 out of 10 Americans suffering from depression, where are all of these people? Can someone recognize depression when it is not obviously apparent? These individuals loom all around us, keeping quiet. However, the growing rise of social media has lifted the dark veil and revealed the identity of some of these individuals. Those suffering from depression have been expressing themselves increasingly through the use of social media as an outlet. In turn, social media has provided positive effects for ... • 5. Suicidal Ideation Paper Psychological assessment provides counsellors with an objective point of view, meaning that therapist bias will be minimized. According to Briere and Scott (2015), structured interviews are designed to help counsellors avoid overlooking symptoms or inadequately assessing a client, whereas the use of unstructured interviews may cause the counsellor to miss crucial information as there are no guidelines to follow. A structured interview will be used to ensure that no aspects of Ms. Wuornos' case are overlooked. There is a significant relationship between childhood physical and sexual abuse and suicidal ideation. Suicide ideators are individuals who have plans and wishes to commit suicide, but have not yet made any recent attempts. Since suicide ideation precedes suicide attempt, it is important to focus on the intensity, pervasiveness and characteristics of the ideation in order to assess suicidal intention and to predict future suicidal risk (article). The Scale for Suicidal Ideation is a 19–item scale that will be used to quantify the intensity of current suicidal intent by scaling various dimensions of self–destructive thoughts (Beck & Kovacs, 1979). ... • 9. The Importance Of Human Relationship For Both Kai And Tamili 1) The duty to protect the well–being of Kai versus importance of human relationship for both Kai and Tamili. I chose this as the ethical problem because it seems as though Kai could use some help with her well–being. She has a lot on her plate with being in a strong recovery from bi–polar (I) disorder, her husband being deployed for the four time to Iraq, she has had suicidal ideation two within the past month, trying to take on a new job as a principal, and in sessions she becomes stressed very easily and shuts down. I've noticed when Kai gets stressed in family session Tamili will get very angry. Kai being stressed could be causing Tamili to act out in school and receive bad grades. This is why I chose the importance of human relationship as the other problem. Kai and Tamili have bonded very well but with Kai being so stressed lately it could be affect Tamili's performances at school. Tamili has been bulling others at school, has low grades, and is being very disrespectful to her teachers. 2) a. I would want to ask Kai's close friends and family how she is currently handling life. With her fiancé being deployed, with the possibly of become a school principle and Tamili not preforming well in school. Asking the person who is mentoring Kai for the school principal position how Kai seems to take on the workload. Is Kai stressed when more work is given to her, does she take on any work troth at her to distract her from other things. I would then want to ask Kai how Tamili is ... • 11. College Is A Time In Which People Are First Discovering College is a time in which people are first discovering who they are, and what they would like to do with the rest of their lives. It is a point where for the first time in these young adults' lives they are living on their own and actively making their own life decisions. These young adults are thrown into a world that seems so foreign to anything they have known, and so many new things are thrown their way that they just have to decide and do. The sudden newness of it all can cause many stressors amongst a wide margin of students who attend college. This new found stress may begin to gradually increase over time, which then leads to many college students developing depression. The depression experienced more often than not goes ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... They may instead be partaking in activities that negatively suppress their depressive emotions. They lash out in aggressive emotions, or turn to alcohol and illegal substances. In fact, 45 % of college students end up binge drinking, and 25 % abuse drugs, both prescription and illegal (Tartakovsky). There is a stigma behind depression that makes admitting to the disease something that people just do not do out of their own will. This sense of shame then results in a large number of people going around undiagnosed and untreated for something as serious as depression. There needs to be a stronger conversation about how real depression is and how important it is to get help to treat it. The lack of a conversation being had is hurting college students further than their depression (Li). Due to some colleges not having accessible counseling services, or mental health programs, it helps in the results of self–treatment of student's depression. Or simply due to the fact that some students do not know that they either have depression, or that there are services at their colleges that are there to help them. More colleges need to have outreach programs to help students to understand that it's okay to seek help and that there are many ways to manage their stress. Ways that do not include harming themselves and their bodies. It is statistically likely that if all of this stress begins to add up, suicidal thoughts may begin to occur. I used two different people for these recordings because we usually only see each court–mandated client once at the City of Tempe which is for the DUI (Driving Under the Influence) screening and/or ASI (assessment/screening and intake), which determines how many hours of education and/or training needs to be completed by the client to satisfy the court. • 15. College Student's Perception Of Depressed Mood Summary: College Student's Perception of Depressed Mood By: Nicole Puglisi, Leslie Ryan, and Allan Koikoi Component One: Background Information The article "College Students ' Perceptions of Depressed Mood: Exploring Accuracy and Associations" by Irene M. Geisner and colleagues, relate college experiences (i.e., drinking, drug use, etc) to moods and behaviors to determine if students under–, over–, or correctly estimate the prevalence of sadness, depression, and suicide ideation in themselves and other students. A well as how their gender is associated to these findings. Moreover, this article focuses on the field of psychology and the objective of this article is to convey the multiple factors that coincide with the determination of depressive moods/behaviors, and how a student is able to detect these moods/behaviors in others. For example, some students predicted an overestimate of sadness, depression, and suicidal tendencies in their peers because of the other negative factors associated with these cognitive tendencies, such as substance abuse, relationship abuse, and drinking after driving. Gender also plays a role in this study, as researchers predicted that males had a tendency to underestimate sadness, depression, and suicidal tendencies because of previous studies. Overall, factors such as gender and lifestyle choices, can influence students and their ability to predict sadness, depression, and suicidal tendencies, which is displayed throughout the article and in ... • 17. Suicide Can Be A Difficult Topic To Discuss. Especially Suicide can be a difficult topic to discuss. Especially if one has known someone who has committed suicide. Suicide does not discriminate and happens anywhere that life exists. According to Rosenberg (1999),"Suicide is the 8th leading cause of death overall in the United States. For the elderly, it is the 13th, and for the young (15–24) it is it the 3rd leading cause of death" (pp. 83–87). The increasing rate of suicide has called implementations of suicide prevention plans. The staff members that implement the program do not have educational, mental health training, or licensure requirements. However, program kits are required. The program kits are about $400. The kits are full of useful information and resources. Some of the things that are included are program implementation guides, student response cards, Will to Live packets, student newsletters, access to online resources, and the Brief Screen for Adolescent Depression (BSAD) forms. The program also has an interactive training module online for school staff and supporters. Research on this program has shown a favorable outcome of reduced suicide. "At a 3–month posttest, it was found that intervention high school students were less likely than control students to report having had suicidal thoughts and suicide attempts" ("SAMHSA," 2014). Results were taken from questionnaires. This program, however, is ineffective for increasing the receipt of mental health and/or substance abuse treatment and ineffective for increasing social competence related to help seeking behaviors ("SAMHSA," 2014). Overall the program showed improved in suicidal thoughts and behaviors and knowledge, attitudes, and beliefs about mental health. The next model is the Family Intervention for Suicide Prevention (FISP). • 19. Dealing With Suicidal Ideations Working with a client who reports suicidal ideations can come in different forms, but can potentially lead to a crisis if left unaddressed. Monaghan and Harris (2015) discussed suicide intervention from the beginning of a therapeutic relationship by building a working and trusting relationship, collaborating with the client, conducting regular risk assessments, involving social support, and establishing a specific intervention style. There are three specific intervention styles were reported by Monaghan and Harris (2015): solution–focused therapy, cognitive behavioral therapy, and dialectical behavior therapy. Solution–focused therapy helps the client focus on the solution rather than the problem, strengths rather than weaknesses, and the positives instead of the negatives. Cognitive behavioral therapy helps the clients alter their way of thinking about their situation with the goal of altering the client's feelings and behaviors. • 21. Suicidal Ideation is the Preoccupation with Suicidal Thoughts Suicidal ideation is a medical term for thoughts about or an unusual preoccupation with suicide. The range of suicidal ideation varies greatly from fleeting to detailed planning, role playing, and unsuccessful attempts, which may be deliberately constructed to fail or be discovered, or may be fully intended to result in death. Although most people who undergo suicidal ideation do not go on to make suicide attempts, a significant proportion do.[1] Suicidal ideation is generally associated with depression; however, it seems to have associations with many other psychiatric disorders, life events, and family events, all of which may increase the risk of suicidal ideation. Recurrent suicidal behavior and suicidal ideation is a hallmark of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Moreover, these drugs' intended effects can themselves have the unintended or undesired consequence of an increased individual risk and collective rate of suicidal behavior: Among the set of persons taking the medication, a subset feel bad enough to want to commit suicide (or to desire the perceived results of suicide) but are inhibited by depression–induced symptoms, such as lack of energy and motivation, from following through with an attempt. Among this subset, a "sub–subset" may find that the medication alleviates their physiological symptoms (such as lack of energy) and secondary psychological symptoms (e.g., lack of motivation) before or at lower doses than it alleviates their primary psychological symptom of depressed mood. Among this group of persons, the desire for suicide and/or its effects persists even as major obstacles to suicidal action are removed, with the effect that the incidences of suicide attempt and of completed suicide increase. [citation needed] Life events Life events are strong predictors of increased risk for suicidal ideation. Furthermore, life events can also lead to or be comorbid with the previous listed psychiatric disorders and predict suicidal ideation through those means. Life events that adults and children face can be dissimilar and for this reason, the list of events that increase ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 23. Suicide Presents Challenges For Social Work Suicide presents challenges for social work researchers as they seek answers and causative agents. Obviously, the victim is not available to provide answers to the many questions that suicide creates. However, there are other "victims" of suicide – family, friends, and colleagues that may be able to provide insights. The search for data typically begins with reviewing death certificates for cause of death. From there, a technique known as psychological autopsy is used to recreate the state of mind and health of the victim and any external environment causes of the suicide. The process is typically more qualitative in data gathering since one of the primary techniques involves interviews with individuals who knew the suicide victim. However, as pointed out by Rubin and Babbie, use of qualitative data does not rule out the use of quantative techniques to refine and bin the data sets (text p. 564–5). For example, age, gender, or socioeconomic data gathered during the interview process may lead to insights when the data are binned and searched for trends or distributions. This is also the case when medical records are available that may provide other insights to concomitant illnesses and quantative analyses are performed. Psychological autopsies have revealed that more than 90% of suicides involve coexisting mental disorders; predominantly mood and/or substance use disorders (Isometsä ET, 2001, para. 1). Medical records and physical autopsies may soon provide other ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

For the purposes of this paper, an assumption that Manuel is not in immediate danger is made, and he chooses to sign a written contract stating that he will not make any attempt on his life before having another discussion with a counselor. While a written contract cannot guarantee that Manuel will not choose to harm himself during this period, adolescents who sign this type of contract will typically comply. At this point, a follow–up meeting is scheduled, which will allow time to consider the assessment information in formulating the scope of the problem, and provide intervention strategies for Manuel's continued treatment (McWhirter et al., 2017). Double Abc X Model And Suicide Risk Assessment The Virgin Suicides relates the story of the Lisbon family and the multiple crises they face, particularly acute suicidal risk of all five daughters. The family consists of the father, Ronald, the mother, and five sisters, Cecilia, Lux, Bonnie, Mary, and Therese. The family experiences both major and minor crisis events throughout the film, ultimately ending with all five daughters completing suicide. While there were numerous individuals experiencing a crisis, the neighborhood boys, the entire Lisbon family, and several other minor characters, this review will focus specifically on crisis incidents that surround the mother and two daughters, Cecilia and Lux. This analysis will utilize the Double ABC–X model and suicide risk assessment. Cecilia Cecilia is the youngest of the Lisbon daughters, being only thirteen. She is slight, thin and plain. She is quirky, as evident by her wearing the same wedding style dress throughout her entire appearance in the film, as well as precocious and introverted. She is an environmentalist, as evident by her reaction to the condemning of the tree in her front yard, her grief about the fact that a frog was added to the endangered species list, and her overall fascination with nature discussed in her diary. Cecilia appears alienated from her family, perhaps misunderstood because of her drastically different personality. The presentation of these somatic conditions make the diagnosis of depression difficult in older people and therefore requires the identification of differences in symptoms of depression and coexisting somatic conditions. • 35. Side Effects Of Self-Harm Research Paper Bleeding out. Scarred from head to toe. These are a couple of side effects of self–harm inflicted by adolescents. Some mental causes for self–harm are depression, anxiety, and mood disorders. Self– harm is currently a major concern, and there have been many moves recently to combat it. Two of the more significant treatments developed that assist adolescents with their self–harming behaviors are Cognitive Behavior Therapy (CBT) and Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) (Laye–Gindhu & Schonert–Reichl, 2005). Before discussing these treatment options, an understanding of what self– harm truly means is crucial. "Self–harm, [is] defined here as deliberate and voluntary physical self– injury that is not life–threatening and is without any conscious suicidal intent" (Laye–Gindhu & Schonert–Reichl, 2005, p. 447). "According to population studies, between 5% and 10 % of adolescents report past–year self–harm" (Mehlum, et al. 2016, p. 1082). Some of the more well– known forms of self–harm are "cutting, hitting, biting," (Laye–Gindhu & Schonert–Reichl, 2005, p. 453) and other non–suicidal actions – scarifications are among more publicly–recognized type. Projected Outcomes Contributing Factors: According to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC, 2016), a strong positive correlation exists between the number of adverse events in a child's life and the probability of negative outcomes as they grow from adolescence into adulthood (cdc.gov). For all NA residents, reservation life has considerable exposure to suicide and is one of the many contributing factors to its occurrence and the rising epidemic (Bazrafshan, Sharif, Molazem, & Mani, 2016). • 39. The Suicidal Ideation Questionnaire Review of the Suicidal Ideation Questionnaire by BELINDA B. STRAUSS, Mississippi State University, Mississippi State, United States of America: DESCRIPTION. The Suicidal Ideation Questionnaire (SIQ) is a self–report assessment designed to determine an adolescent's present level of suicidal ideation. Adolescents completing the SIQ are asked to report how often they have suicidal thoughts. There are two forms of the SIQ, the SIQ and the SIQ–JR. The SIQ, a 30–item scale, is developed for senior high school students in grades 10 – 12, and the SIQ–JR, a 15–item scale, is developed for junior high school students in grades 7 – 9. The SIQ is reported to require 5– 10 minutes to complete and can be used in both large scale screening as well as individual assessment. The SIQ seeks to assess thoughts of suicide, or suicidal ideation and not suicidal behavior. As such, test administers are instructed to refer to individuals with high scores as scoring high in suicidal ideation and not as "suicidal." DEVELOPMENT. Suicidal ideation as a construct is defined as the domain of thoughts and ideas about: death, suicide, and serious self–injurious behaviors, including thoughts related to the planning, conduct, and outcome of suicidal behavior. 150 moderately to severely depressed adolescents and young adults were interviewed in a clinical setting in order to construct specific item content. • 41. The Causes Of Suicidal Ideation Suicidal Ideation Most suicidal people do not want death, they just want the pain to stop, so how can the pain they feel be resolved? The point of my paper is to find out the reasons that people become suicidal and how to prevent it from happening. People contemplate suicide till the end so by understanding the source of their pain, it is possible to prevent the unfortunate outcome of suicide. Don't ignore even the smallest of signs of suicide. Suicidal ideation is the idea of ending one's life. "Suicidal ideations may be the result of loss, anxiety disorders, depression, substance abuse, and problems in other areas of a person's life that feel so overwhelming suicide seems like the only way to cope [Pacific Grove Hospital]." People in painful situations struggle to find solutions to end their suffering. People who are suicidal can often be very manipulative with their emotions, hiding their darkest thoughts and instead showing everyone "happiness," so how do we really know if someone is showing suicidal symptoms? Some symptoms include change in appetite, substance abuse, distance from once loved things, self criticism, psychosis, paranoia, talking about death. Suicide ideations are often a symptom of result of undiagnosed or untreated mental health disorders [Valley Behavioral]. Suicidal people may be manipulative with their emotions, but they can't put on a happy face at every moment, so watch them carefully and confront them when you see some of the symptoms or dual disorders. The causes for suicide are not thought to be the result of a single factor, but rather the combined forces of genetic, physical, and environmental risk factors. Individuals who have a family history of mental illnesses do have a higher risk, however this is not always the case. "The effects of genetics on suicide are due to inheriting mental illness and by inheriting traits. Several mental illnesses have genetic influences and increase the risk of suicide. These include depression, bipolar disease, schizophrenia, and some types of anxiety [Dr. Pat, About Kids Health]." Genetics have a large influence on suicidal thoughts and mental illnesses, although it's not something you can prevent, you can protect yourself and others ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 45. Suicide : The Causes Of Suicidal Ideation According to John Harris and Vicky White, suicidal ideation a disorder in which an individual experiences thoughts of suicide. Suicide is defined as a "deliberate act of causing one's own death". They identify several distinct factors that assist in suicidal thoughts. Individuals who experience overpowering feelings of hopelessness and depression, alcoholics, substance abusers, those facing financial troubles, and those having difficulties with social relationships. In Gale Encyclopedia's article, Suicide, the author shares that Americans who have committed suicide, more often than not, have a major mental illness. Suicidal ideation is linked to bipolar affective disorder, as sufferers from bipolar disorder might experience these suicidal thoughts. Gale Encyclopedia identifies the concept of diathesis, which is "a medical term for a predisposition that makes some people more vulnerable to thoughts of suicide." The author explains that, by using a stress/diathesis model, professionals have been attempting to decipher what makes certain people consider suicide, while others don't. Gale Encyclopedia identifies the following factors in the stress/diathesis model: family stressors (including divorce and economic hardships), a loss of a socially accepted moral system, the decline of religion and other social groups outside of the family structure, geographic moves, a greater idealization of suicide in the media, and methods like firearms, tall buildings, and medications that ... Some conversation starters you can use are "I have been feeling concerned about you lately ", "I just wanted to see if everything is okay, you haven't been yourself lately" when client tells you how they feel you should go deeper by asking when they started feeling the way they do, how can I support you. Pauline expresses that there is a lot of arguing with her Dad & Stepmother. This provides risk for her as serious conflict between caregivers and children can put them at the risk of the problem behaviours (Channing Bete Company 2004). The separation of a child's parents can put him/her at risk especially if there are a lot of changes or that the child does not have a good relationship with at least one parent (Burt 2002). It has been indicated in a study that girls in two parent families are less likely to act out risky behaviours than those in single parent families. (M.D. Resnick et al 1993). Children or adolescents who are well reasonably well adjusted after divorce nearly always come from an environment where there is a firm, responsive, nurturing, supportive adult (Henderson 2002). Pauline's recent history is shows this sort of environment has not been there for her. A factor that protects an adolescent is having an adult in her life she can trust and with whom she can confide. The presence of an adult Mentor in an adolescents life helps reduce the participation in risk taking behaviours. (Beier et al 2000). Pauline reports having a close relationship with her Aunty Sarah who lives down the road with her Nan. She is able to confide with Aunty Sarah and feels close to her. • 51. Cyberbullying And Youth Suicide Ideation And Attempts Essay Methodology The purpose of my study would be to see the correlation between cyberbullying and youth suicide ideation and attempts. This study aimed to examine adolescents' experiences with cyberbullying because, "victims of cyberbullying often report feeling frustrated, angry, and depressed" (Patchin & Hinduja, 2010). Cyberbullying can have a negative impact on a youth's life and by conducting this study we can gain a better understanding of how cyberbullying manifests itself in adolescence 's behavior, including suicidal thoughts and attempts. I would use a mixed methods approach to examine various aspects of cyberbullying, including students' involvement in cyberbullying, reporting behaviors, and suicidal ideation or attempts. To gain more detailed information on the effects of cyberbullying on youths ' suicidal ideation and attempts, I would utilize both quantitative and qualitative data. Since cyberbullying itself is a complex issue combining both quantitative and qualitative data can help to enhance the theory of the research. Sampling Participates will be students from five middle schools within the five boroughs of New York. I will collect data from 80 students, ages 11 to 14 (40 females, 40 males). Students will be chosen by school staff at the middle schools who expressed interested in participating in cyberbullying studies. Once participates are chosen I (the researcher) will make the visit to the schools to conduct the study. In the study, pupils will be told ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Understanding family history and mental illness proves vital with guiding and assisting adolescents who attempt suicide, as well as realizing that adolescents need supportive and meaningful relationships. Lack of support in close relationships identities as one if the major risk factors associated with adolescents who attempt suicide. During adolescence, individuals need guidance from friends, teachers, parents/ guardians, and/or school counselors to grow, reflect, confide, etc. Through an interview process, Latakiene & Skruibis, discover that all three participants who attempted suicide lost a close relationship and felt alone. • 62. Theories About Perfectionism And Suicidal Ideation, And... The psychological study by Paul.L Hewitt and Gordon L.Flett investigated the theory about perfectionism and suicidal ideation, and its dimensions on depressed adolescent patients. According to this article, we could say that researchers used for this study correlational method, which comprises sample data based on five independent variables such as perfectionism, stress, daily hassles, hopelessness, and suicide potential. The sample data consisted of 55 adolescents, who completed the procedures which have been associated with some indices of life stress, hopelessness, and one of the main problems of adolescence which is suicide ideation and potential. In addition, that was also attended by the parents of those teenagers who were interviewed to analyze their major stressful situations. As a result, these methods are given to understand that there are two models of perfectionism, such as self–oriented perfectionism, which is not correlated with suicide; and socially prescribed perfectionism, which eventually showed that it is associated with a potential suicide. Hierarchical regression also suggests that self–oriented perfectionism is not much of a threat to commit suicide, but socially prescribed perfectionism on the contrary has a link between suicide and depression. These findings conclude that socially prescribed perfectionism is one of the serious predictors of suicide attempt among adolescents in depression. There are five independent ... • 72. Suicide Is The Second Most Common Form Of Death Essay Suicide is the second–most common form of death in adolescence. Flip through any peer–reviewed journal article, and you will see that this is not just a myth. In fact, in Canada, 10.3 adolescent males and females take their life for every 100,000 people in the national population every year (WHO, 2007). In the United States, that number is almost double at 17.8 adolescent males and females for every 100,000 individual aged 15–24 (WHO, 2007). For over the last decade, researchers from all parts of the world have been at work trying to piece together what it is that triggers and pushes teenagers into making the ultimate decision and take their life. In Norway, researchers came up with four possible factors: the parents regarding poor communication, previous suicidal ideation, alcohol and drug abuse, and frequency and variances of depression and mental disorder developments (Herrestad, Mehlum, & Nrugham). In support of the finding, adolescents in Thailand who had attempted suicide claimed that they had done so due to severe parenting criticisms, which threw them into a state of depression and rendered them uncontrollable of their actions and emotions (Arunpongpaisal, Rungreangkulkij, & Sukhawaha, 2016). In another study conducted in the United States, Caucasian and Hispanic adolescents between the ages of 13 and 18 claimed they were 1 1/2 times more likely to have suicidal thoughts if they fell into an addiction with alcohol after having been sexually assaulted (Behnken, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Indications of Suicidality and Preventative Measures Because of the lasting nature of chronic pain, one who is suffering from it may feel depressed and even suicidal. Research suggests that there is an increased risk of suicidal ideation among individuals with chronic pain (Wilson, Kowal, Henderson, McWilliams, & Pe 'loquin 2013, para. 1). Moreover, it is hypothesized that for an individual the risk is higher if he or she feels isolated or that he or she is a burden to others (Wilson et al. 2013, para. 2). Such predictions appear to be plausible as lasting pain has a tendency to impede greatly on one 's social life. Further, it is important to note that studies have also indicated that pain severity and suicidal ideation do not always correlate (Wilson et al. 2013, para. 20). In other words, someone with "severe" pain may not experience suicidal ideation, but someone with "mild" pain may experience suicidal ideation. This finding is important as one may assume that a higher level of pain equals a higher likelihood of suicidal thoughts and actions, but this may not always be the case. Thus, it is important that health professionals as well as friends and family members caring for those suffering from chronic pain acknowledge their suffering even if their pain is not categorized as severe.
