7. Introduction
5G is here.
Business managers and their technical partners will be
the ones to build the next great innovations based on the
capabilities of 5G. But in order to do so, they require a
fundamental understanding of the market pressures and
a basic understanding of the technologies driving this
shift -technologies like Edge computing, IoT and AI, as
well as improvements to mobile broadband and low
latency.
5G devices and networks are being deployed now and
are expected en masse in the next 12-24 months.
This generation of wireless technologies will
fundamentally change the way we communicate and the
way businesses operate, from virtual and augmented
reality to smart cities and much more.
Businesses will gain new ways to enhance customer
experience, deliver hyper-personalization and improve
operational efficiency, among the many ways that we’re
only now beginning to imagine.

Overview of the most important and active
standards & organizations
3GPP develops protocols for mobile technology. It has created and established 2G and 2.5G standards such as GSM (Global
System for Mobile Communications),GPRS (General Packet Radio Service), EDGE (Enhanced Data rates for GSM
Evolution);3G standards like UMTS (Universal Mobile TelecommunicationsSystem) and HSPA (High Speed Packet
Access); 4G standards including LTE (Long-Term Evolution)Advanced and LTE Advanced Pro, and now 5G standards.
GSMA is a trade body that represents the interests of more than 750mobile network operators worldwide.
Cloud Native ComputingFoundation (CNCF) is a Linux Foundationcollaborative project that builds sustainable
ecosystems around open source projects that orchestrate containers as part of a microservices architecture. Among other
things, it develops standards for Kubernetes.
ETSI (European TelecommunicationsStandardsInstitute) is an independent standardization organization that produces
globally-applicable standards for Informationand Communications Technologies (ICT), including fixed, mobile, radio,
converged, broadcast, and internet technologies.
LF Edge is an umbrella organization under the Linux Foundationthat aims to build an open source framework for Edge
Computing, unifying Edgeacross IoT, telecom, enterprise, and cloud.
TM Forum is a global industry association that drives collaboration to build frameworks and toolkits to support the digital
transformation.
MEF (Metro Ethernet Forum) is a nonprofit international industry consortium of over 200member companies, driving the
development of over 60 technical standards, specifications, and implementationagreements that affect communication
services and technology interoperability.
O-RAN Alliancefocuses on open, interoperable interfaces and RAN (Radio Access Network) virtualization.
OpenFlowis a communications protocol that gives access to the forwarding plane of a network switch or router over the
network. The OpenFlowstandard is developed by the Open Networking Foundation (ONF).
International TelecommunicationUnion (ITU) was founded in 1865to facilitateinternational connectivityin
communications networks, allocate global radio spectrum and satellite orbits, develop the technical standards that ensure
networks and technologies seamlessly interconnect, and strive to improve access to ICTs to underserved communities
worldwide. Every time you make a phonecall via the mobile, access the Internet or send an email, you are benefitting from
the work of ITU.
The 5G PPP (Infrastructure Public Private Partnership) IMT-2020 EvaluationGroup is organized under the umbrella of
5G InfrastructureAssociation, with participants from active 5G PPP projects, to perform an independent evaluation of
IMT-2020proposals to support ITU-R WP5D for the finalization of the IMT-2020 recommendationin 2020. This
Evaluationgroup has been recognized by ITU-R as a contributor of an independent second opinion on the Radio Interface
Technologies (RITs), which will be submittedby SDOs (Standards DevelopingOrganizations) to ITU-R to be recognized as
member of the IMT family of systems for mobile and wireless.
International Mobile Telecommunications-2020(IMT-2020Standard) are the requirements issued by the ITU
RadiocommunicationSector (ITU-R) of the International TelecommunicationUnion (ITU) in 2015 for5G networks, devices
and services. The name IMT-2020 follows the same naming structure as IMT-2000(3G) and IMT-Advanced (4G).
3GPP TS 38 Series. Technical Specifications for 5GNR.
10. OPNFV (Open Platform for Network Function Virtualization)is a carrier-grade, integrated, open
source platform to accelerate the introduction of new NFV products and services. The project is
developedunder The Linux Foundationumbrella.
OpenDaylight is a collaborative open source project hostedby The Linux Foundation, aiming to
promote software-definednetworking and network function virtualization. It is a modular open
platform for customizing and automating networks.
Kubernetes is an open source container orchestration systemfor automating the deployment,
scaling and managementof containerized applications. It is developedunder the CNCF umbrella, a
collaborative open source project at The Linux Foundation.
OpenStack is a free and open source software platform for cloud computing, mostly deployed as
Infrastructure-as-a-Service, whereby virtual servers and other resources are made available to
customers.
ONAP (Open Network Automation Platform)is a platform for real-time, policy-driven orchestration
and automation of physical and virtual network functions that enable software, network, IT and
cloud providers and developers to rapidly automate new services and support complete lifecycle
management. It is an open source project hosted by The Linux Foundation.
OpenSwitch is an open source, Linux-basednetwork operating system (NOS) for disaggregated
switches. The OpenSwitch platform aims to accelerate the transition to open networking and the
