2. Technology comes
from the greek
words technē and
logos. Technē
means, “art/craft,”
while logos means,
“word/speech." It
came into the
English language in
the 17th century.

embraced a growing range of means,
processes, and ideas in addition to tools
and machines. By mid‐century, technology
was defined by such phrases as ‘the means
or activity by which man seeks to change
or manipulate his environment.’"

4. As the millennia have passed,
humankind has developed
into a species that can not
only use a rock to knock
bananas out of a tree, like a
primate might do, but
sharpen the rock, put it on a
stick, and chop down the
entire bushel. This in and of
itself is a basic form of
technology.

5. FAST FORWARD
NUMEROUS ERAS OF
MANKIND, WE ARE
NOW IN THE
ELECTRONIC
INFORMATION
TECHNOLOGY STAGE.

WITHIN THE PAST
CENTURY.

6. We passed through using fire as power, creating
tools out of stones, manufacturing shelters, and
using different types of materials (such as
metals) to create things.

7. We figured out how to use
scientists to manipulate
natural resources, form
irrigation for communities,
develop methods for
agriculture, and create
methods of transportation.

8. We then got into finding new means of creating
power, developing the field of chemistry,
discovering electricity, forming industries, using
engineering, and creating telephones and
telegraphs.

9. Information technology
uses this as a springboard
to launch itself into
transmitting information
across computers.

11. When the first personal computers
were created, they did not do much
more than this. It was when, as
Press goes on to say, “work PCs
were connected to each other via
Local Area Networks (LANs)—where
Ethernet became the standard—and
then long‐distance via Wide Area
Networks (WANs),” that major
growth occurred in the IT sector.

12. The IT sector took a massive leap forward
with the creation of the World Wide Web.
This took businesses from using computers
as a mathematical tool to using computers
as the basis for all business.

13. Today, we use information technology for highly
complex algorithms that help us to manage and
surf the information we have available to us
through the internet and on personal softwares
and hardwares.
