• From beginning of discussions, HRSDC was eager to work
with provincial Chambers.
• Promoted the idea that Chambers were not only
representative of Canadian business, but community
leaders focused on creating “vibrant communities” across
Canada
• Also promoted the community leadership character of
local Chambers.
Why The Chambers
Objectives
Test approaches/tools using leading edge Internet technologies.
Support older workers to incorporate prior learning and
essential skills assessment in job search strategies.
Promote workplace and business practice change and
innovation.
Create an effective, sustainable and replicable community-based
model.
Increase older workers achieving job opportunities through
essential skills-based employment strategies in rural Canadian
regions and communities.
• Community assessment, planning, testing and piloting.
• Website development and testing.
• Essential skills/prior learning assessment tools development
and customization.
• Business practices and workplace innovation tools
development.
• Dissemination, promotion and advocacy.
Activities
This project is focused on helping communities address
skills and job opportunity barriers which limit economic
development.
Common structure/tools, but information tailored to each
community or region.
Believe that proximity important for older workers.
Also believe that we can engage both workers and firms if
the opportunity is close by, real and recognizable.
Open to older workers across Canada interested in
moving to pilot communities.
Include volunteer opportunities.
Community Pilots
• Perhaps, most important job is that of community
coordinator.
• Coordinator is project advocate within community; local
spokesperson; facilitator; provides advice both older
workers and firms; solutions provider.
• Connected to community host, perhaps the local
Chamber.
• Contract employee + provide contribution-in-time of
effort. Provided with travel and hospitality funds for
meetings/presentations.

  • 2. • From beginning of discussions, HRSDC was eager to work with provincial Chambers. • Promoted the idea that Chambers were not only representative of Canadian business, but community leaders focused on creating “vibrant communities” across Canada • Also promoted the community leadership character of local Chambers. Why The Chambers
  • 3. Objectives Test approaches/tools using leading edge Internet technologies. Support older workers to incorporate prior learning and essential skills assessment in job search strategies. Promote workplace and business practice change and innovation. Create an effective, sustainable and replicable community-based model. Increase older workers achieving job opportunities through essential skills-based employment strategies in rural Canadian regions and communities.
  • 4. • Community assessment, planning, testing and piloting. • Website development and testing. • Essential skills/prior learning assessment tools development and customization. • Business practices and workplace innovation tools development. • Dissemination, promotion and advocacy. Activities
  • 5. This project is focused on helping communities address skills and job opportunity barriers which limit economic development. Common structure/tools, but information tailored to each community or region. Believe that proximity important for older workers. Also believe that we can engage both workers and firms if the opportunity is close by, real and recognizable. Open to older workers across Canada interested in moving to pilot communities. Include volunteer opportunities. Community Pilots
  • 6. • Perhaps, most important job is that of community coordinator. • Coordinator is project advocate within community; local spokesperson; facilitator; provides advice both older workers and firms; solutions provider. • Connected to community host, perhaps the local Chamber. • Contract employee + provide contribution-in-time of effort.
