Since oceans contain the majority of life on earth, it is extremely important to make sure that we are

I'm in the ocean every day, it's my second home. Because of this, I am very sensitive to literary and
other pollution that ends up in our oceans. I can't walk down the beach today without seeing a pile
of trash. Because of this curiosity, I wanted to research what another type of litter fill our local

In today's world, it seems as though we are living on this earth as if we have another planet to go to.
However, this is false. Earth is the only planet that can sustain water, breathable air, and even life.
Yet we continue to destroy our planet. Once this planet is ruined, it is gone and we have nowhere
else to go. Pollution is one of the biggest killers on Earth, affecting over 100 million people.
Unfortunately, everyone from huge companies to little kids throwing trash onto the ground are
participating in this disaster. We are the only people to blame. Pollution is corrupting the earth by
harming the ocean, animals, humans, plants, and climate. To begin, pollution has an enormous
impact on the oceans. Every year about 180 million tons of waste are dumped into the ocean by
companies. This waste greatly affects the organisms inside the ocean, from coral bleaching to
eutrophication. The ocean is roughly 140 square miles, and 84 square miles of it, is filled with
billions of pounds of plastic swirling in convergences. This adds up to around forty percent of the
world's entire ocean surface. In addition, eighty percent of all this pollution enters the ocean through
land activities. Plastic doesn't decompose, it instead photodegrades. This means that plastic only
breaks into smaller pieces, and it never fully goes away. Plastic garbage, which decomposes very

As our Oceans begin to saturate from Human's carbon dioxide pollution, its marine inhabitants
suffer as a consequence of our ignorance. Rises in atmospheric carbon dioxide levels result in ocean
acidification affecting the marine life inhabiting areas such as coral reefs, which are also being
bleached by the change in carbon dioxide levels. Current studies led by marine biologists suggest
the ocean's carbon dioxide levels are off balance and are destroying the marine ecosystems, by
stunting fish growth as well as bleaching the coral. Ocean acidification has changed the ocean for
the worse, or so it seems. Other evidence suggests marine life can adapt to the change in the oceans
acidification level, but not all species will be fortunate enough to acquire evolutionary
advancements. On–going atmospheric carbon dioxide pollution will continue to saturate our oceans
and change the marine life that inhabits it. Humans must strictly govern pollution as well as instate
fishing policies to protect our oceans and the marine life being neglected by humans who are simply
ignorant of the crisis at hand.
In the beginning, our oceans evolved along–side the planets inhabitants changing over time during

Regulated Ocean Pollution
Like the Titanic there are many items laying at the bottom of the ocean, and floating in the ocean
causing it to be polluted. Some substances end up in the big bodies of water by accident but more
times than not it is a purposeful act done by people. However it may get there is leads to ocean
pollution; which, is an issue that the world has dealt with for many years. The origin of ocean
pollution is widespread, one of the largest causes is unregulated ocean dumping. Having harsher
enforcement, and regulation of what is dumped, are two solutions, amongst others, that can bring an

All around the world people can be found dumping illegal substances that harm these big bodies of
water. Most of the illegal substances are being dumped by at sea ships. There is debate that
regulated ocean dumping may be harming or helping the cause but no one knows for sure. Ocean
dumping falls under under one of three categories depending on what item is being dumped. There
is the black, gray, and white list. The blacklist is made up of very harsh chemicals like mercury,
radioactive waste, plastic, crude oil, and substances used for chemical warfare. Gray is still an
intense list but not as detrimental as the previously mentioned black list. The makeup of the gray list
is: nickel, scrap metal, cyanide, many other types of alloys and metals, and "any material that will
affect the ecosystem due to the amount... which... is dumped." As for the white list, this is where
items that do not fall under the black or gray category belong.
An additional large cause of ocean pollution that is not as widely known as other sources; because,
many consider it under the category of "ocean dumping" but in reality it is it's own category of
garbage dumping. The title given to this cause may be misleading as it is "...human waste and
sewage water that has been partially treated or untreated..." entering the ocean. It is polluting the
