India is a democratic country where citizens must determine ethical standards. The document discusses three options for an ethical standard: ethical egoism which asserts right is what benefits oneself; utilitarianism which asserts right is what produces greatest happiness for most people; and altruism which asserts concern for others' welfare. However, none of these alone can apply to a democratic society. A blended standard of considering egoism for self-development, utilitarianism for society's benefit, and altruism to avoid self-interest would produce an ethical standard respecting others' ideals for a democratic society.
