99% of art is convincing people it is art

2. This is Eddie Martinez. He is an artist. He has a rather lengthy
CV of where his artwork has been displayed; selling his works is
his primary source of income. To this end, he spends a great deal
of time trying to make his art “attractive” to potential buyers,
describing painting as a “chore.” He is discontent with painting in
styles that he is known for and begins paintings by spray painting
an outline, then approaching the painting like a “boxing match,”
constantly moving, adding, and subtracting paint.

Eddie, please don’t hate
your trademark “big eyes.”
You should be thankful
someone likes them.
Cheer up guy, you can
support yourself by doing
something that you, at
least marginally, enjoy.
Please don’t take this as
some sort of commentary
on how money imprisons
artist’s true creativity; this
is just open mockery.
4. Barry McGee began his career as a graffiti artist in San Francisco. Channeling the need to have his name displayed on Bay
Area scenery, he tagged everything he could. As an artist, McGee is extremely self-conscious, often afraid that people will
find past works he completed but do not like. His work incorporates many themes from urban culture and he continues to
focus on his base audience, the urban graffiti enthusiast, while endeavoring to maintain his “street-cred.”

Tagging has taken on a whole new meaning for my generation. I tried to demonstrate this while
remaining true to the “street.”
6. Kara Walker describes her work as unexpected with underlying turbulence due to her simultaneous need to be the
heroine and the villain. She said she utilizes silhouettes to obfuscate the subject, making it easier to look at.

While Kara Walker chose silhouettes to make difficult topics such as
slavery easier to view. I chose to make this photo into a silhouette
because who wants to look at two people who are so disgustingly
happy?
