To contact me:
Email: dkachel@antioch.edu
Cell: 717-575-3886
P.S. No need to refer to me as “professor,” just “Deb” will do!
I will be offering office hours via Zoom. I’ll announce the URL to connect with me in a course
announcement. It will be a live virtual video conference using Zoom so we can have conversations and
I can show you various documents and websites as needed. If you have not used Zoom, it is very easy
and if you have video problems, there is a call-in number so you can hear.

In Sakai, click on the
Welcome tab on the
left-hand frame and
read the Welcome.
4. Next– Read and Print
the Syllabus and Course Calendar
In Sakai, click on the
Syllabus tab on the left-

Notice that the 3-page Course Calendar
lists:
• each weekly module
• the weekly assignment and due date
• Plus the scheduled Zoom Sessions/Office
Hours (pink rows)
NOTE: Zoom Sessions are Tuesdays from 4:30
to 5:30. Most are optional, but will be
recorded for later viewing as needed.
6. Zoom Sessions & Office Hours
Zoom Sessions are highly recommended as I intend to explain some of the more difficult
content of the mod and offer additional supports.
Zoom Office Hours are optional. You will be able to:
• Listen to an overview of the mod
• Hear an explanation of the assignment
• And ask me any questions you have.
All sessions and office hours will be saved and archived to view later.
There will be options to attend via video & audio from your laptop or to attend via audio
only from a phone or cell.

7. Next: Read the Announcements
Read each posted
announcement.
Get in the habit of checking for
new announcements each time
you log into Sakai, although you
are likely to receive an email to
your AUS email that a new
announcement has been
added.
NOTE: For AUS courses, always use your AUS email to both send and receive messages.
8. Complete and Post Your Profile

• Read my Profile in the “Meet and
Greet” forum
• Download a Profile Form
• Fill it in for yourself and save a copy
on your computer
• Then select “New Topic” in the “Meet

classmates here as well.
Notice there is a Forum created for each mod for you to
ask and answer questions of your classmates and me as
needed.
9. Suggested Way to Complete Each Weekly Mod

formatting references or creating a
bibliography required for some of
the assignments.
You may wish to view the video on
this LibGuide subpage as a review
of APA.
The Online Writing Lab (OWL) is
worth bookmarking since it has
examples for various sources.

14. Assignments
• There are weekly practical assignments required for this course.
• The assignments in mods 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 7, 8, 9, are “field experiences” meaning you complete them
based on the school library where you work. [If you prefer to work elsewhere, discuss that with me
prior to submitting the Mod 1 assignment.]
• Mods 1 through 5 are the mods on collection development and you will need to work in a specific
library to complete them. Make sure the librarian in that library is OK with you examining the 500s
(sciences) of the nonfiction collection, as well as looking at records in the circ system and online
catalog, as needed.
• Mods 6 through 10 are the library management or program administration mods.
• Each assignment includes a very detailed grading rubric which you should use as a checklist to be
sure you have included all the components that I will be looking for to grade. [BTW, in the rubrics,
you are considered a “candidate” and “students” are the K-12 students you work with.]
15. Submitting Assignments
Submit assignments as Word files clicking on the Assignments tab, then the Assignment
Title. I prefer you to name the assignment files as follows: Mod #-Your Last Name-Short
title. For example: 1-Kachel-School profile
16. Viewing your Grades
In this course each mod’s assignment
is worth 100 points.
To view your grades, click on the
“Gradebook” tab after Mod 10 on the
left-hand frame.
You will see the Assignments listed
and the points you have earned.
17. Basic Advice for Online Learning
• Set aside a quiet time and place for reading and working on the course and
assignments.
• Don’t be afraid to ask questions.
• Don’t procrastinate; begin coursework early.
• Use organizational tools - bookmarking sites you frequently use; online/paper
calendars, digital alarm/reminders for Zoom sessions, etc.
• Inform the instructor early if you are having difficulties doing assignments or
keeping up with the coursework.
18. Advice for Success in this Course
• Be cognizant of due dates and the activities listed on the calendar.
• Read the content and readings before attempting assignments.
• Contact me as soon as possible if you are having any difficulties in completing assignments.
• If you would rather work with a classmate on an assignment, ask me first. I will allow
partners for some assignments.
• Read the Previous Class Comments on assignments and look at any examples of good
assignments that I post.
• Always document your sources. Do NOT copy word-for-word anything unless you quote it and
cite it in APA format. If you aren’t sure if something needs to be cited, ask me first.
• Print out the assignment and check off components of the grading rubric to be sure you have
included every thing before submitting the assignment.
19. Let’s Get Started!
As stated in the Welcome, this course is a combination of
managing a school library collection and administering a school
library program. So the course is jam-packed and doesn’t even
cover everything you are likely to encounter as you manage a
school library. However, I have chosen the most difficult issues
and trust you will be able to work through other issues with
your library colleagues.
So with the help of Christie Kaaland, we plan to have a very
fruitful learning experience this session. I sincerely look
forward to working with you!
