Through the various classes that I have been able to take here at Franciscan University and through
field work at Pugliese West Elementary school this semester. I have been able to slowly but surely
develop a personal education of philosophy that I hope to implement into my future classroom and
the students that will be entering into them. Until my time is done here at Franciscan and I continue
on in becoming an educator, I will continually prepare myself for the different dynamics that my
classroom will have, all depending on the children entering. Whether it being me just having an
inclusive classroom or a classroom with kids with multiple disabilities. I feel that my philosophy
will stay the same either which way it may go.
In preparing to become a teacher, I've been told by cooperating teachers, superiors whom I look
up to, as well as through multiple classes that I've had the privilege to take. That it is beyond
important that we are aware of our student's cognitive growth, physical development, as well as
their social, and emotional needs. Through the learning of Maslow's hierarchy of needs, I will be

I Am A Professional Teacher Essay
To be a professional teacher, it takes skill to train young minds. Education is extremely important to
go through. Teachers have many different philosophies to choose from when teaching in a
classroom. Out of the five philosophies, I ranked the highest in Essentialism and Progressivism. Both
of these philosophies are taught entirely different from each other. Essentialism is teacher–centered
learning and expresses the teaching by the core curriculum. Progressivism is student–centered
learning and expresses the teaching by doing group work. I believe that a classroom should be
divided between using both philosophies. I believe that a teacher should stick to the core curriculum,

Teaching is a challenging profession because we are responsible for teaching students our content
areas but also we must teach them how to learn. Once such challenge comes in the form of note
taking. This is a learned skill and one that most students are unable to just figure out on their own.
Students must be guided in note taking best practices. Doug Fisher and Nancy Frey (2004) remind
teachers, "students must learn to focus on the important phrases, selecting on the key words that
carry the meaning, even if some of the details are not yet scripted. This practice is also essential to
good notetaking because one cannot write down everything one hears." (p 104)
I chuckled reading this quote because it is absolutely true. Students seem to fall into one spectrum or
another– they either want to write down everything or choose to write down nothing. Teaching
students note taking techniques is a skill that will serve them well as they move through school, into
higher education, or perhaps even in their jobs. I am cautious about the idea of forcing students to all
taking notes in the same manner utilizing only one technique, such as Cornell. While this can be
effective, students have multiple intelligences and what works for one student may not work for
another. As such, I think students should be taught several methods and should be allowed to choose
one method that works best for them.
