Essay About My English Class
I can remember seeing that I had to take an English class my first semester of college. I was
already overwhelmed with starting college, and having to write college essays made me get even
more nervous. I sat down with my mom and decided to look at the English classes available, and I
finally decided that I had to take an evening class to make it work in my schedule. The first day of
English came and now looking back it was not as bad as I thought. It made me a better writer and be
where I am today. It may have taken me some time to get where I am today, but at least I am on
the right track. English Composition helped me realize that I am my own author and have strengths
that I did not realize I had. When I first started college I did not know what to expect with an
English class. I liked writing about topics that interested me, but high school did not allow me to do
that. I took American History and we would have to write...show more content...
I learned many techniques from my professor. He helped me realize that it is okay to have your
own opinion as long as you back it up. He showed me that I am an author when I did not think I
was. He also told us to read our essays out loud when we proofread, and I always did this
technique before submitting all my essays. I can remember having to write my first essay and I
was scared, because I felt like I had to get a good grade. I started thinking about what tools I could
use to help me, and I decided to go to The Learning Center to help with my essay. When I went
there they would make edits to my essay and then explain what I should change. The tutor noticed I
used multiple choppy sentences and commas in spots there should not be. Sometimes I would even
go twice to make sure I did not miss any minor mistakes. Going there helped me feel more confident
as a writer and I learned from my mistakes. I had many helpful techniques from multiple people that
shaped me into the writer I am

My Essay On College-Level Writing
Like you stated in your essay, no one is perfect at writing. That being said, I still enjoyed your
essay. You described your experiences and opinions in a satisfactory way, and it was easy for me to
understand what college–level writing means to you from reading your essay. The subject of the
essay didn't get lost and you kept me interested throughout it all, even making me feel like I could
relate to some of your experiences. I feel like you did a good job at portraying these experiences and
you knew exactly what you were talking about. Many of the transitional phrases used, contributed to
the cohesiveness within your paper. I also felt like I was given an insight into your past experiences
and it was interesting to learn how your background shaped the way you currently view higher level
writing. You did not miss the point of thisessay and I feel like you took your time to understand
what was asked of you before you started writing and it definitely shows.

There were a few words that could have been written differently. This definitely didn't take away
the quality of your essay, in my opinion, but sometimes, something as simple as going over the
paper a few times to make sure our words have a space between them could improve the reader's
experience by a great amount. To give you a few examples: "Had helped", "actually speaking",
"thinking is", and "exactly informative" are all written together in the paper. Additionally, A few
word choices could be improved and some words reduced or replaced. Some suggestions on this
topic: Your second sentence where it says "communication" could be easily changed to
communicating and "either" shouldn't be used there. Instead of "not", maybe saying what you mean
specifically. (Nonverbal) and applying the correct usage of

Abstract:
This essay contains the experience of my journey from college life to university life. There are real
life experiences such as mistakes, learning, religion, endurance, emotions, timing, decision making,
traveling and environment. I have experienced a lot of new things and learned that will be helpful
for me in my journey throughout life.
"Get up man! You are getting late! " this line is heard out of every room, when you are a hostel lite.
You are on your own throughout the university life experience. Every step that you take is full of
new challenges and unexpected results, for example, if I get up late just because of laziness, I will
miss the bus going to the university, then I will reach late in class, miss something in the lecture. But

Secondly, the teaching faculty is skillful, helping and encouraging towards the students. As
compared to other universities, our teaching staff is much better and anyone who is keen to learn
can go to any teacher and ask for help. Third, I when I was coming to the university, I thought there
would one day for orientation and from the next days, we will start our studies but I was actually
pleased to see that there was a whole week for orientation. We visited our whole college and were
introduced to the faculty, moreover, there were many new activities that we performed and many of
them had some home taking fruits of thought. We had discussion with a faculty member on the
merits of the university and personally, that was the real education, we were getting and even now
there are some times when I sit with many of the faculty members and discuss different topics to get
some wisdom and try my level best implement it on my personal

For me, learning a language is a complicated process. It is different from learning other subjects. It
involves a lot of practices and follow up. When I talk about my personal experience, I would say
that I have a rich experience in learning English as a second language. English was taught to me for
ten years starting from grade seven till graduation from university. After graduation, I felt that I
should improve my language skills. Therefore, I did a lot of efforts personally to increase my
fluency. Until now I still learn the language. Indeed, learning a language takes a lifetime.
I started learning English as a second language when I was in first intermediate. I still remember my
first classes and my first teachers. I remember that my teachers changed frequently in the first year
but all of them have much in common. All of them used grammar translation method. They used to
write bilingual lists of words on board, then we, as students, were asked to copy these lists and
memorize them by heart. All teaching concentrated on reading and writing skills, but there were no
activities concentrating on speaking or listening. In addition, grammar rules were taught in that stage
of learning the language as mathematics equations, and we were asked to memorize the rules as we

Of course, there are certain defects or gaps in my knowledge or ability to use the English language
like using idioms and the appropriateness of some vocabulary. Idioms have many connotations and
denotations in the English language. Sometimes I use an idiom and I mean something, but the
connotations of the idiom means something else. Another gap of my knowledge of the language is
the appropriateness of using certain vocabulary. English language entails high sense of using the
appropriate word for describing or narrating something. To my mind, I have not reached this point

Graduate Level Expectations
Graduate Level Expectations
One crucial piece of information to have when you enter a graduate program is what expectations
the university and your professors will have of you. There are expectations of students in several
different areas, such as in communication and writing, in how you will collaborate with your peers,
and how you will persevere in the program. If you start off knowing what your university and
professors expectations are, you will have greater success because you will know what lays ahead
for you.
Communication and Writing
Communication is the key to success in all areas of one's life, whether it's in school, on the job, or
in a relationship it, is vital for success. If you have excellent communication skills, you will...show

In any collaborative environment, you want to approach the project with and internal locus of
control. The best approach to teamwork encompass the four following elements: you need to have
conscientiousness which will create empowerment; leadership which will promote cooperation; a
team process that includes good communication; and team effectiveness that leads to task
completion satisfaction (Grinnell, Sauers, Appunn, & Mack, 2012). When being tasked with a
collaborative assignment, I will strive to have an internal locus of control outlook.
Perseverance
To persevere in this graduate program, I will have to manage my time efficiently and handle the
stress of being a wife, a mom, a student, and a long–term substitute teacher. Some great advice that I
heard on how to manage my stress was to think about commitment, control, and change in a
simpler manner (Evans, 2015). I am committed to this program because I know it will help me
achieve a life goal. Furthermore, in prioritizing what I want to have control over, and by looking at
change as a new experience, I will overcome any difficulties.
The primary challenge that I will have to overcome is how to manage my time properly. I have a
lot of irons in the fire right now and to make sure one doesn't burn out I will prioritize my tasks in a
time sensitive order. By creating this "check–off list", I will be able to manage my time and lower my

Why are university writing courses required for college students? Throughout the United States,
most college students are required to take a writing course within their first year. It has been debated
that this class is only useful to those students within a writing based major. University writing
courses offer useful information and techniques to all students. This information can be beneficial to
all students and is not major specific. University writing courses present techniques which students
can apply within a professional environment such as forwarding, countering, and the idea that writing
is context dependent. Through the application of appropriate concepts from a university writing
course, students can become overall better writers within their specialized major.
College students must endure the heavy workload that comes with each of the classes that they
take. While these classes all require different skills to be successful in them, they also share some
of the same required skills as well. One of the most important skills to have as a student is to have
strong reading and writing skills. While students may use mathematics, problem solving, and
reasoning skills, the most important skill they will use is writing.
Students often question why they need to take a university writing course. Statements such as,
"Why do I need to take another writing course?" or "How is this going to help me with my major"
can often be heard by students. You too

Preparing for Academic Success at the Graduate Level

Characteristics of Graduate Writing Writing at a graduate level is a major part of a student's
coursework when entering into a Master's program. Throughout a person's college career, they have
written many papers in their undergraduate studies, but writing papers at a graduate level differs
from previous styles of writing. There are very distinct characteristics in graduate writing. If the
basic outline and rules are followed correctly, the paper will come together in a clear and precise
manner; grabbing the audience's attention, and making the point of the paper undeniable to the
reader, while using facts and references to...show more content...
Use quotation marks where word for word statements are placed and use in–text citations where
paraphrasing has occurred. Giving credit to all these references will help the writer to avoid
plagiarism. Plagiarism is an inexcusable offense when writing papers. It is considered stealing
and simply not citing references could lead to the rejection of the paper, not including the various
penalties the student will have to face from the University. Research helps the writer to support
any ideas in the paper and full access to any and all references should be given to the reader
through citations and a reference page that is to be included at the end of the paper. A graduate
level paper will address a specific audience with a clear and comprehendible purpose. It is important
that the writer has a true and clear understanding of what is being asked from them for the
assignment before taking on the writing task. If the task is unclear, the writer's point will be lost as
will their audience. One of the most important factors of any paper is the tone. At a graduate level,
the tone is set in formal writing. The use of informal or conversational wording should be avoided.
This includes using clichГ©s, contradictions, and generalizations (Graduate Level Writing,
2011*2014). "Graduate level writing demonstrates an awareness of the assignment's guidelines,
purpose, audience, format, and constraints" (Graduate Level Writing (2011*2014)). Organization is

Writing for Learning to Improve Students' Comprehension at the College Level by Fahad Alharbi
as well as Luiza Costa Ribeiro, Writing Essays at College: Why it's Important both go into detail
on how important writing at this level is and all the skills learned for during and after college. As
well on how you can benefit from them. Students should care about learning how to write at the
college level because it is part of the foundation of learning how to comprehend readings.
Learning to understand any type of readings can help in the workplace as well as college. This is
because the reader will be able to fully the grasp the idea of what is being told to to them. Therefore,
the best way to learn this skill is being able to be a writer that knows how to "influence a student's
comprehension"(Alhabri 2). This could also help in the workplace because you know what to do
in order to get the job done effectively. Another reason for learning how to write in the college

The Importance Of College Level Writing
An area of confusion in the college world is what defines college–level writing. There are many
possible answers to this question. Students may be confused about this issue because they want to
know what is expected of them in their composition classes and the writing that they have to do in
their other classes. All of us want to succeed when we get to college and writing makes up a big part
of the college learning experience since we have to write in every class we have. Excelling in
writing, and especially in writing at the college level, will help students succeed in college because
of all of the writing involved in all of their classes. Before we write our papers however, we need to
learn how to write at the college level and before that what college–level writing is. College–level
writing is something that requires more attention to content and quality than high school level
writing, something that has varying expectations between colleges and professors, and something
that requires the writer to actively participate in their writing to become better.
Some students may believe that the work that they did in high school will be similar to the work
that they do in college, but, "there is no guarantee that students who do well in high school
composition will automatically do well in college composition" (Davies 31). A student that does
excel in their high school writing classes may think that they know how to write at the college level
and that they do not need to further

people he studied in English that now became successful in their life, Indira Gandhi, Jyoti Basu,
Ratan Tata, Sunil Gavaskar, Amitabh Bachchan and a million of people who are leaders and

The Value Of University Education Essay
On the Value of University Education
The nature of attaining a higher level of education has changed drastically since the end of WWII
with more than triple the percentage of the population attending at least some college. While
receiving advanced degree used to be an opportunity only for the rich or those going into a
specialized profession, it now has become an integral part of the American Dream. However,
historically such mass education was never the point of university, and the value of their teachings
was much more defined because of it. In the face of the changing nature of the economy and
society universities have struggled to find a value for university education. The answer colleges
have found is to make the modern purpose of education, not to provide training for any specific
career or life path, but to provide skills to help in life for the next 50–60 years across all arcs of life.
This includes basic responsibility, active education, independence, and interpersonal skills, and
while career training is still a part it has been replaced as the primary goal of a liberal education by
these new talents and necessities. (Historical background in the opening really ties in)
College is a time of transition for a majority of students who enter in a classical experience of 4
years of on–campus or near–campus living, with classes and life to balance. As such colleges do a
lot to promote the development of basic responsibility. Certainly more decisions and freedom is left

My Experience At The University
Coming from a small town high school, I knew that my experience at the University would be a
game changer. But, what I did not expect to go from being the best of the best in high school to
thinking how am I going to survive not only this semester but, the next seven years of my life as
well. I was a star student at my high school and I didn't really have to try to make good grades, but
here at the University of Memphis I am barely on the same level of the average student. I never
seriously study in high school and I almost always procrastinated on my assignments, but always
did well. I have learned that these habits will not work in college, but I have yet to brake them. I
know my learning styles and always have and nobody knows me better than me, but I am still
fumbling around trying to grasp this whole college thing. I have my goals that I want to
accomplish at the university, my personal goals, and my story that I want to leave behind all in
line and set up, but struggle with finding the right path to make those goals a reality. My experience
as a college student as opened my eyes to a completely different way to approach education and I
must evaluate and adjust myself to insure that I am successful, so I can reach each and every one
of the goals I set for myself. I discovered my different types of learning styles early. I begin to
notice how I did better in different subjects by using different methods to consume information when
I was in the eighth grade. In math, I

Reflection On Introduction To Writing
I'm coming to you today to discuss my reflection after taking one of my prerequisite, Introduction
to Writing (WRTG 101). Which is an introductory course to give you the basic knowledge of
writing. Because I'm a Psychology Major at University of Maryland University College I looked

writing to help further my career as a psychologist and the ability to communicate on paper.
Although, this class had many challenges, even though, I had taken a writing class fifteen years ago,
my freshman year in college, I still wasn't proficient enough to write a professional letter or essay.
Before taking this class, I had no passion to write. My writing would be all over the place, my
events would not be in sequence, along with poor grammar, I would have to many ideas and
unable to narrow down a topic, which in turn my supporting sentences were not supporting. Also,
I didn't know how to cite my material or properly cite my references. I was scared I would fell this
class, because I felt I didn't know just the basic knowledge of writing. Although, once upon of time,
I had no passion for writing, I have a little more confidence, because I learned the basic knowledge
in writing, grammar, and in punctuation. Also, I feel introduction to writing has offered me the
accomplishments needed to become a more successful writer, as well as, the confidents to be a more

What I Expect From a University Education Essay
University Education Expectations
"Sarah Dalton...," I heard my name called. My new professor requested that I stand up to present
my speech, and the entire class turned to focus on me. With my hands shaking and body
trembling in fear, I made my way to the front of the room. I could feel 30 strange pairs of eyes
burning into me like hot needles, and the first words of my professor reverberated in my head.
"This isn't high school. You're a college student now!" I stared back into my new classmates'
faces, and it finally hit me. I was now at a point in my life where I could make my own decisions.
This inspired me to further contemplate my realization. I began to ask myself, "Now that I'm in

To succeed, they must be actively involved in their education rather than a passive "bump on a log"
listening to a "superior" professor lecture. Philosopher Paulo Freire believed there were two types of
education. The first, called "banking education," he described as follows: "...It [banking education]
turns them [students] into 'containers,' into 'receptacles' to be 'filled' by the teacherYthe scope of
action allowed to the students extends only as far as receiving, filing, and storing the deposits (Freire
26)." Education through this method is not very successful because the students are not actively
seeking knowledge and understanding. This is the type of instruction that should not be present at a
university.
Freire's second method, problem–posing education, creates a much more promising avenue of study.
It is described as follows: "Through dialogue, the teacher–of–the–students and the
students–of–the–teacher cease to exist and a new term emerges: teacher–student with
students–teachers (Freire 28)." In this way the students are able to use their teacher as a guide to
more knowledge. The professor is not a dictator, but another student himself. Now both teacher and
students are actively involved in the education process.
In any education institution, it is not only desirable to be actively involved in the learning process,
but also to have the

Students and University Life Adjustments
Students and University Life Adjustments Human life consists of various stages and each stage has
its own characteristics and features. Proceeding through these stages is a joyful experience and
human beings always long for the next stage to come. No doubt, people enjoy recollecting old
memories but there is always a charm in imagining the time to come. It is valid for all individuals but
for the students, the next stage is the symbol of progress and development. Students particularly
wish for the next stage which they see their seniors passing by and long for the same phase to come
in their life. Entering university life is one of the most special events of students' lives. It is because
of multiple reasons. The first and foremost reason is its being the highest level of educational
institute one can attend in life. University provides maximum learning and development
opportunities to students. Furthermore, as the universities go global, their cultures become diverse
and provide the students with an environment in which they learn about various countries, their
backgrounds, preferences and cultures. University education is not the same as imparted in school
and college. The teaching methods are different, so are the contents and teaching styles. In many
universities, choices related to class schedule are also given. All these aspects make university a
charming place and students wish to start their university life with enthusiasm. This paper gives an

Difficulty Writing an essay at Tertiary Level
Writing an essay at Tertiary level is an extremely difficult process.
Introduction
The ability to write a quality piece of writing at the tertiary level is a procedure that does not come
easily. As mentioned in Marshall and Rowland (2006, p.195).the complexity of developing a style of
writing that is personal and academic while processing and developing thoughts and concepts into a
presentable piece of academic writing can be a daunting process ( myself included ).
This essay will discuss some of the barriers a student may experience during their writing experience.
The development of research and reading skills in their approach to learning and difficulties a
student may experience due to procrastination and consequently...show more content...
Therefore the writing of an essay, although difficult, is a process that is of benefit to the student as a
capstone or finish to their study. As Rowntree mentions "Writing is the crucial step without which
study would be incomplete" (2006, p.65).The writing of an essay is a process where you
communicate your skills and knowledge in the written form.
Physical Hurdles
The written essay is a task that is normally done by the writer away from class. The timeframe is
usually adequate provided the student begins in a timely fashion without procrastinating. When
writing at home the immediate environment may have debilitating effects. Orr (1992, p.80).
States"To maximise your output arrange for a quiet and distraction free writing period". This I find
is particularly important as I can also relate to this as well as a quote in Marshall and Rowland
(2006, p15). "...in formal learning you are required to concentrate for sustained periods and to study
subjects that aren't of immediate importance to you."
Your physical surroundings are important for producing an atmosphere conducive to effective study
and writing. A student who is balancing study and work with limited control over time may have
trouble concentrating on producing a well balanced essay, in comparison to someone who has their
own room, desk and family support. Likewise essay writing can discriminate

Should College Attendance Be Mandatory Essay
Should college students be required to attend class through mandatory attendance policies? Should
professors deduct points for students who miss more than a given number of absences? This can be a
heated debate between students and instructors, and between instructors with different opinions as
well. Here are some arguments on both side.
Arguments in Favor of Mandatory Attendance Policies
One of the main arguments in favor of requiring attendance is that good attendance is needed to
develop a strong sense of community in a classroom, and to foster a healthy sense of class
participation. For instructors who choose to stick with the old lecture model, this isn't an issue.
However, many instructors opt to have a participatory classroom...show more content...
Arguments Against Mandatory Attendance Policies
One of the biggest argument against attendance policies is that they are patronizing and fail to treat
students as adults. Children are forced by law to attend school, but adults are not. And if you treat
people like children, they may be more likely to act like children.
Related to this is one of the students' biggest complains about attendance policies. "Hey, I paid to
take this class," argues a typical student. "I can choose whether or not I want to be here."
One reason many instructors dislike mandatory attendance policies is because they can be a good
deal of work to enforce, and they put the teacher in the role of police officer. Whenever you have
rules, people try to argue their way around them, rightfully or not.
Instructors find themselves dealing with a stream of appeals from students who claim (rightly or
wrongly) to have legitimate excuses for missing class. They also find themselves dealing with long
lists of students at the end of the semester who claim they were in class and forgot to sign the
attendance sheet on this day or that–– a problem that can be solved by making students 100%
responsible for signing the sheet each day no matter what, but this can be rather draconian.
Although many instructors applaud mandatory attendance policies because they encourage
participation, others question the value of forced participation. Students who don't really want to be
there–– and

Effective College Level Writing Strategies Essays
Effective College Level Writing Strategies
When asked about effective writing, many people respond that it is the act of placing the thoughts
together in a logical manner. This response is too narrow because it suggests that effective writing is
only a matter of getting the writing code correct. It also suggests that writing degenerates from the
thought, which is not the case. Although the definitions of effective writing has nothing to do with
effective writing itself, there are various points of effective writing that can be used to achieve
effective writing. In simple terms, an effectively writing material must be preplanned, organized,
revised and properly edited.
In writing, the writer must begin by prewriting. This means the writer...show more content...
Again, organization requires that the body of the writing remains consisted with the claim of the
writer (Murray & Hughes, 2008). This means the writer must not stray from the subject of discussion
but remain consisted with the theme of writing. At the end of the writing, the writer must provide a
conclusion. A conclusion is not considered a distinct paragraph, but is a summary of the main points
made in the article. The conclusion should recap the arguments of the author.
Effective writing requires that articles must be correctly formatted without typos and grammatical
errors. This means an effective writer must proof read the writing once it's done. Proofreading is
very important in writing. Although some people have resorted to using spell–checkers, the best
proofreader remains the writer (Strategies for Essay Writing, 2014). There are some words that
computer programs might assume to be correct when in fact they are not. Thus in order to
produce quality writing, the writer must make sure that all mistakes are corrected and that all
typos are corrected. In college writing, it is also important that the writer knows and avoid
plagiarism. Plagiarism is a serious academic offence in most colleges and might lead to academic
probation or even expulsion (Strategies for Academic Writing, 2014). The best way to avoid
plagiarism is by citing all the sources use or

Over the past 500 years, the influence of the mass media has grown rapidly with the development
of technology. Social media and more specifically social networking have gained a vast amount of
attention as a key concept in innovative ways to communicate in university education. Although
there has been a large amount of critique both by academics and citizens interested in the effects of
social media on university education. It is for this reason that I have chosen this as a topic to
conduct research into this area. The purpose of this work is to conduct a literature review that
examines both academic and non–academic sources. It is important to take into consideration both
types of sources in order to ensure a well–rounded and non–bias view on this topic. In recent times
there has been a large amount of debate around the effectiveness of the use of social networking
sites for educational purposes. Social media such as Facebook, internet forums, blogs, wikis,
podcasts and videos have been the subject of many extensive discussions in recent years and this is
due to social media's rapid growth and popularity. The increase of social networking is used
extensively for the purpose of communication and its power to spread information and engage with
students has been recognised as an influential tool within education. Another idea that is often
expressed is that while social networking may increase communication and collaboration among
peers, it also acts as tool for content

Essay Writing At University Level

  • 1. Essay About My English Class I can remember seeing that I had to take an English class my first semester of college. I was already overwhelmed with starting college, and having to write college essays made me get even more nervous. I sat down with my mom and decided to look at the English classes available, and I finally decided that I had to take an evening class to make it work in my schedule. The first day of English came and now looking back it was not as bad as I thought. It made me a better writer and be where I am today. It may have taken me some time to get where I am today, but at least I am on the right track. English Composition helped me realize that I am my own author and have strengths that I did not realize I had. When I first started college I did not know what to expect with an English class. I liked writing about topics that interested me, but high school did not allow me to do that. I took American History and we would have to write...show more content... I learned many techniques from my professor. He helped me realize that it is okay to have your own opinion as long as you back it up. He showed me that I am an author when I did not think I was. He also told us to read our essays out loud when we proofread, and I always did this technique before submitting all my essays. I can remember having to write my first essay and I was scared, because I felt like I had to get a good grade. I started thinking about what tools I could use to help me, and I decided to go to The Learning Center to help with my essay. When I went there they would make edits to my essay and then explain what I should change. The tutor noticed I used multiple choppy sentences and commas in spots there should not be. Sometimes I would even go twice to make sure I did not miss any minor mistakes. Going there helped me feel more confident as a writer and I learned from my mistakes. I had many helpful techniques from multiple people that shaped me into the writer I am Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 2. My Essay On College-Level Writing Like you stated in your essay, no one is perfect at writing. That being said, I still enjoyed your essay. You described your experiences and opinions in a satisfactory way, and it was easy for me to understand what college–level writing means to you from reading your essay. The subject of the essay didn't get lost and you kept me interested throughout it all, even making me feel like I could relate to some of your experiences. I feel like you did a good job at portraying these experiences and you knew exactly what you were talking about. Many of the transitional phrases used, contributed to the cohesiveness within your paper. I also felt like I was given an insight into your past experiences and it was interesting to learn how your background shaped the way you currently view higher level writing. You did not miss the point of thisessay and I feel like you took your time to understand what was asked of you before you started writing and it definitely shows. It's always important to choose the correct sentence beginners, making sure they aren't stale...show more content... There were a few words that could have been written differently. This definitely didn't take away the quality of your essay, in my opinion, but sometimes, something as simple as going over the paper a few times to make sure our words have a space between them could improve the reader's experience by a great amount. To give you a few examples: "Had helped", "actually speaking", "thinking is", and "exactly informative" are all written together in the paper. Additionally, A few word choices could be improved and some words reduced or replaced. Some suggestions on this topic: Your second sentence where it says "communication" could be easily changed to communicating and "either" shouldn't be used there. • 4. For me, learning a language is a complicated process. It is different from learning other subjects. It involves a lot of practices and follow up. When I talk about my personal experience, I would say that I have a rich experience in learning English as a second language. English was taught to me for ten years starting from grade seven till graduation from university. After graduation, I felt that I should improve my language skills. Therefore, I did a lot of efforts personally to increase my fluency. Until now I still learn the language. Indeed, learning a language takes a lifetime. I started learning English as a second language when I was in first intermediate. I still remember my first classes and my first teachers. I remember that my teachers changed frequently in the first year but all of them have much in common. All of them used grammar translation method. They used to write bilingual lists of words on board, then we, as students, were asked to copy these lists and memorize them by heart. All teaching concentrated on reading and writing skills, but there were no activities concentrating on speaking or listening. In addition, grammar rules were taught in that stage of learning the language as mathematics equations, and we were asked to memorize the rules as we ...show more content... Another gap of my knowledge of the language is the appropriateness of using certain vocabulary. English language entails high sense of using the appropriate word for describing or narrating something. To my mind, I have not reached this point Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 5. Graduate Level Expectations Graduate Level Expectations One crucial piece of information to have when you enter a graduate program is what expectations the university and your professors will have of you. There are expectations of students in several different areas, such as in communication and writing, in how you will collaborate with your peers, and how you will persevere in the program. If you start off knowing what your university and professors expectations are, you will have greater success because you will know what lays ahead for you. Communication and Writing Communication is the key to success in all areas of one's life, whether it's in school, on the job, or in a relationship it, is vital for success. The best approach to teamwork encompass the four following elements: you need to have conscientiousness which will create empowerment; leadership which will promote cooperation; a team process that includes good communication; and team effectiveness that leads to task completion satisfaction (Grinnell, Sauers, Appunn, & Mack, 2012). When being tasked with a collaborative assignment, I will strive to have an internal locus of control outlook. Perseverance To persevere in this graduate program, I will have to manage my time efficiently and handle the stress of being a wife, a mom, a student, and a long–term substitute teacher. Some great advice that I heard on how to manage my stress was to think about commitment, control, and change in a simpler manner (Evans, 2015). I am committed to this program because I know it will help me achieve a life goal. Furthermore, in prioritizing what I want to have control over, and by looking at change as a new experience, I will overcome any difficulties. The primary challenge that I will have to overcome is how to manage my time properly. I have a lot of irons in the fire right now and to make sure one doesn't burn out I will prioritize my tasks in a time sensitive order. By creating this "check–off list", I will be able to manage my time and lower my Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 6. Why are university writing courses required for college students? Throughout the United States, most college students are required to take a writing course within their first year. It has been debated that this class is only useful to those students within a writing based major. University writing courses offer useful information and techniques to all students. This information can be beneficial to all students and is not major specific. University writing courses present techniques which students can apply within a professional environment such as forwarding, countering, and the idea that writing is context dependent. Through the application of appropriate concepts from a university writing course, students can become overall better writers within their specialized major. College students must endure the heavy workload that comes with each of the classes that they take. While these classes all require different skills to be successful in them, they also share some of the same required skills as well. One of the most important skills to have as a student is to have strong reading and writing skills. While students may use mathematics, problem solving, and reasoning skills, the most important skill they will use is writing. Students often question why they need to take a university writing course. Statements such as, "Why do I need to take another writing course?" or "How is this going to help me with my major" can often be heard by students. You too Get more content on HelpWriting.net

Essay about Writing at a Graduate Level Preparing for Academic Success at the Graduate Level COM/600 Characteristics of Graduate Writing Writing at a graduate level is a major part of a student's coursework when entering into a Master's program. Throughout a person's college career, they have written many papers in their undergraduate studies, but writing papers at a graduate level differs from previous styles of writing. Use quotation marks where word for word statements are placed and use in–text citations where paraphrasing has occurred. Giving credit to all these references will help the writer to avoid plagiarism. Plagiarism is an inexcusable offense when writing papers. It is considered stealing and simply not citing references could lead to the rejection of the paper, not including the various penalties the student will have to face from the University. Research helps the writer to support any ideas in the paper and full access to any and all references should be given to the reader through citations and a reference page that is to be included at the end of the paper. A graduate level paper will address a specific audience with a clear and comprehendible purpose. It is important that the writer has a true and clear understanding of what is being asked from them for the assignment before taking on the writing task. If the task is unclear, the writer's point will be lost as will their audience. One of the most important factors of any paper is the tone. At a graduate level, the tone is set in formal writing. The use of informal or conversational wording should be avoided. This includes using clichГ©s, contradictions, and generalizations (Graduate Level Writing, 2011*2014). Writing in the college–level is needed in order to master college work in any class. Basically all classes require you to more than likely submit some kind of research paper or essay. • 9. The Importance Of College Level Writing An area of confusion in the college world is what defines college–level writing. There are many possible answers to this question. Students may be confused about this issue because they want to know what is expected of them in their composition classes and the writing that they have to do in their other classes. All of us want to succeed when we get to college and writing makes up a big part of the college learning experience since we have to write in every class we have. Excelling in writing, and especially in writing at the college level, will help students succeed in college because of all of the writing involved in all of their classes. Before we write our papers however, we need to learn how to write at the college level and before that what college–level writing is. College–level writing is something that requires more attention to content and quality than high school level writing, something that has varying expectations between colleges and professors, and something that requires the writer to actively participate in their writing to become better. Some students may believe that the work that they did in high school will be similar to the work that they do in college, but, "there is no guarantee that students who do well in high school composition will automatically do well in college composition" (Davies 31). A student that does excel in their high school writing classes may think that they know how to write at the college level and that they do not need to further Get more content on HelpWriting.net

  • 11. The Value Of University Education Essay On the Value of University Education The nature of attaining a higher level of education has changed drastically since the end of WWII with more than triple the percentage of the population attending at least some college. While receiving advanced degree used to be an opportunity only for the rich or those going into a specialized profession, it now has become an integral part of the American Dream. However, historically such mass education was never the point of university, and the value of their teachings was much more defined because of it. In the face of the changing nature of the economy and society universities have struggled to find a value for university education. The answer colleges have found is to make the modern purpose of education, not to provide training for any specific career or life path, but to provide skills to help in life for the next 50–60 years across all arcs of life. This includes basic responsibility, active education, independence, and interpersonal skills, and while career training is still a part it has been replaced as the primary goal of a liberal education by these new talents and necessities. (Historical background in the opening really ties in) College is a time of transition for a majority of students who enter in a classical experience of 4 years of on–campus or near–campus living, with classes and life to balance. As such colleges do a lot to promote the development of basic responsibility. Certainly more decisions and freedom is left Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 12. My Experience At The University Coming from a small town high school, I knew that my experience at the University would be a game changer. But, what I did not expect to go from being the best of the best in high school to thinking how am I going to survive not only this semester but, the next seven years of my life as well. I was a star student at my high school and I didn't really have to try to make good grades, but here at the University of Memphis I am barely on the same level of the average student. I never seriously study in high school and I almost always procrastinated on my assignments, but always did well. I have learned that these habits will not work in college, but I have yet to brake them. I know my learning styles and always have and nobody knows me better than me, but I am still fumbling around trying to grasp this whole college thing. I have my goals that I want to accomplish at the university, my personal goals, and my story that I want to leave behind all in line and set up, but struggle with finding the right path to make those goals a reality. My experience as a college student as opened my eyes to a completely different way to approach education and I must evaluate and adjust myself to insure that I am successful, so I can reach each and every one of the goals I set for myself. I discovered my different types of learning styles early. I begin to notice how I did better in different subjects by using different methods to consume information when I was in the eighth grade. Also, I didn't know how to cite my material or properly cite my references. I was scared I would fell this class, because I felt I didn't know just the basic knowledge of writing. • 14. What I Expect From a University Education Essay University Education Expectations "Sarah Dalton...," I heard my name called. My new professor requested that I stand up to present my speech, and the entire class turned to focus on me. With my hands shaking and body trembling in fear, I made my way to the front of the room. I could feel 30 strange pairs of eyes burning into me like hot needles, and the first words of my professor reverberated in my head. "This isn't high school. You're a college student now!" I stared back into my new classmates' faces, and it finally hit me. I was now at a point in my life where I could make my own decisions. This inspired me to further contemplate my realization. I began to ask myself, "Now that I'm in college, what type of education do I expect...show more content... To succeed, they must be actively involved in their education rather than a passive "bump on a log" listening to a "superior" professor lecture. Philosopher Paulo Freire believed there were two types of education. The first, called "banking education," he described as follows: "...It [banking education] turns them [students] into 'containers,' into 'receptacles' to be 'filled' by the teacherYthe scope of action allowed to the students extends only as far as receiving, filing, and storing the deposits (Freire 26)." Education through this method is not very successful because the students are not actively seeking knowledge and understanding. This is the type of instruction that should not be present at a university. Freire's second method, problem–posing education, creates a much more promising avenue of study. It is described as follows: "Through dialogue, the teacher–of–the–students and the students–of–the–teacher cease to exist and a new term emerges: teacher–student with students–teachers (Freire 28)." In this way the students are able to use their teacher as a guide to more knowledge. The professor is not a dictator, but another student himself. Now both teacher and students are actively involved in the education process. In any education institution, it is not only desirable to be actively involved in the learning process, but also to have the Get more content on HelpWriting.net

Proceeding through these stages is a joyful experience and human beings always long for the next stage to come. No doubt, people enjoy recollecting old memories but there is always a charm in imagining the time to come. It is valid for all individuals but for the students, the next stage is the symbol of progress and development. Students particularly wish for the next stage which they see their seniors passing by and long for the same phase to come in their life. Entering university life is one of the most special events of students' lives. It is because of multiple reasons. The first and foremost reason is its being the highest level of educational institute one can attend in life. University provides maximum learning and development opportunities to students. Furthermore, as the universities go global, their cultures become diverse and provide the students with an environment in which they learn about various countries, their backgrounds, preferences and cultures. University education is not the same as imparted in school and college. The teaching methods are different, so are the contents and teaching styles. In many universities, choices related to class schedule are also given. All these aspects make university a charming place and students wish to start their university life with enthusiasm. • 16. Difficulty Writing an essay at Tertiary Level Writing an essay at Tertiary level is an extremely difficult process. Introduction The ability to write a quality piece of writing at the tertiary level is a procedure that does not come easily. As mentioned in Marshall and Rowland (2006, p.195).the complexity of developing a style of writing that is personal and academic while processing and developing thoughts and concepts into a presentable piece of academic writing can be a daunting process ( myself included ). This essay will discuss some of the barriers a student may experience during their writing experience. The development of research and reading skills in their approach to learning and difficulties a student may experience due to procrastination and consequently...show more content... Therefore the writing of an essay, although difficult, is a process that is of benefit to the student as a capstone or finish to their study. As Rowntree mentions "Writing is the crucial step without which study would be incomplete" (2006, p.65).The writing of an essay is a process where you communicate your skills and knowledge in the written form. Physical Hurdles The written essay is a task that is normally done by the writer away from class. The timeframe is usually adequate provided the student begins in a timely fashion without procrastinating. When writing at home the immediate environment may have debilitating effects. Orr (1992, p.80). States"To maximise your output arrange for a quiet and distraction free writing period". This I find is particularly important as I can also relate to this as well as a quote in Marshall and Rowland (2006, p15). "...in formal learning you are required to concentrate for sustained periods and to study subjects that aren't of immediate importance to you." Your physical surroundings are important for producing an atmosphere conducive to effective study and writing. A student who is balancing study and work with limited control over time may have trouble concentrating on producing a well balanced essay, in comparison to someone who has their own room, desk and family support. Likewise essay writing can discriminate Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 17. Should College Attendance Be Mandatory Essay Should college students be required to attend class through mandatory attendance policies? Should professors deduct points for students who miss more than a given number of absences? This can be a heated debate between students and instructors, and between instructors with different opinions as well. Here are some arguments on both side. Arguments in Favor of Mandatory Attendance Policies One of the main arguments in favor of requiring attendance is that good attendance is needed to develop a strong sense of community in a classroom, and to foster a healthy sense of class participation. For instructors who choose to stick with the old lecture model, this isn't an issue. However, many instructors opt to have a participatory classroom...show more content... Arguments Against Mandatory Attendance Policies One of the biggest argument against attendance policies is that they are patronizing and fail to treat students as adults. Children are forced by law to attend school, but adults are not. And if you treat people like children, they may be more likely to act like children. Related to this is one of the students' biggest complains about attendance policies. "Hey, I paid to take this class," argues a typical student. "I can choose whether or not I want to be here." One reason many instructors dislike mandatory attendance policies is because they can be a good deal of work to enforce, and they put the teacher in the role of police officer. Whenever you have rules, people try to argue their way around them, rightfully or not. Instructors find themselves dealing with a stream of appeals from students who claim (rightly or wrongly) to have legitimate excuses for missing class. They also find themselves dealing with long lists of students at the end of the semester who claim they were in class and forgot to sign the attendance sheet on this day or that–– a problem that can be solved by making students 100% responsible for signing the sheet each day no matter what, but this can be rather draconian. Although many instructors applaud mandatory attendance policies because they encourage participation, others question the value of forced participation. Students who don't really want to be there–– and Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 18. Effective College Level Writing Strategies Essays Effective College Level Writing Strategies When asked about effective writing, many people respond that it is the act of placing the thoughts together in a logical manner. This response is too narrow because it suggests that effective writing is only a matter of getting the writing code correct. It also suggests that writing degenerates from the thought, which is not the case. Although the definitions of effective writing has nothing to do with effective writing itself, there are various points of effective writing that can be used to achieve effective writing. In simple terms, an effectively writing material must be preplanned, organized, revised and properly edited. In writing, the writer must begin by prewriting. This means the writer...show more content... Again, organization requires that the body of the writing remains consisted with the claim of the writer (Murray & Hughes, 2008). This means the writer must not stray from the subject of discussion but remain consisted with the theme of writing. At the end of the writing, the writer must provide a conclusion. A conclusion is not considered a distinct paragraph, but is a summary of the main points made in the article. The conclusion should recap the arguments of the author. Effective writing requires that articles must be correctly formatted without typos and grammatical errors. This means an effective writer must proof read the writing once it's done. Proofreading is very important in writing. Although some people have resorted to using spell–checkers, the best proofreader remains the writer (Strategies for Essay Writing, 2014). There are some words that computer programs might assume to be correct when in fact they are not. Thus in order to produce quality writing, the writer must make sure that all mistakes are corrected and that all typos are corrected. In college writing, it is also important that the writer knows and avoid plagiarism. Plagiarism is a serious academic offence in most colleges and might lead to academic probation or even expulsion (Strategies for Academic Writing, 2014). The best way to avoid plagiarism is by citing all the sources use or Get more content on HelpWriting.net

Social media and more specifically social networking have gained a vast amount of attention as a key concept in innovative ways to communicate in university education. Although there has been a large amount of critique both by academics and citizens interested in the effects of social media on university education. It is for this reason that I have chosen this as a topic to conduct research into this area. The purpose of this work is to conduct a literature review that examines both academic and non–academic sources. It is important to take into consideration both types of sources in order to ensure a well–rounded and non–bias view on this topic. In recent times there has been a large amount of debate around the effectiveness of the use of social networking sites for educational purposes. Social media such as Facebook, internet forums, blogs, wikis, podcasts and videos have been the subject of many extensive discussions in recent years and this is due to social media's rapid growth and popularity. The increase of social networking is used extensively for the purpose of communication and its power to spread information and engage with students has been recognised as an influential tool within education. Another idea that is often expressed is that while social networking may increase communication and collaboration among peers, it also acts as tool for content Get more content on HelpWriting.net
