Although there are numerous advantages to organic farming, there is also advantages to modern
industrial farming. The world population has been increasing dramatically each year. In the 1960's
the world population reached 3 billion, by 2000 the population doubled to 6 billion people. Today,
there is roughly 7.4 billion people around the world. This drastic increase in population needed a
drastic change in food production. To insure there was enough food for the world, there needed to be
a better faster method to producing larger quantities of food. Industrial farming was the solution.
Before industrial farming, farming was on a small scale. Used mainly for feeding the farmers and
those in nearby towns. By using industrial agriculture methods, farmers were capable of creating a
large amount of product while fighting the continuous battle of weeds. Of course this method of
farming had multiple disadvantages. The crops became dependent on the weed killers, the weeds
would need stronger killers each season, the combination of weed killer and pesticides then
deprived the soil of nutrients. All of these devastating negatives transformed into a continuance

Sustainability Vs. Conventional Farming
In Time magazine, Brian Walsh states that today, Agriculture takes up one third of the planet.
(Walsh) Agriculture is the science, art, or occupation concerned with cultivating land, raising crops,
growing, feeding, breeding, and raising livestock. (Dictionary) According to the United States
Department of Agriculture (USDA), when you add the word sustainable to agriculture, it means an
integrated system of plant and animal production having a site–specific application. (Gold) The
sales of organics are at an all time high, but the concern is that consumers do not know the true facts
behind organic farming. Oftentimes, organics are said to be sustainable and are better for the public
than conventional farming, but that is not true. Organic farming is not sustainable. This is proven by
giving the true meaning of sustainability vs. conventional farming, stating the regulations behind
organic farming, and use the two to show how all of this affects the consumers. Sustainability is a
word that is misunderstood by the public. Sustainable agriculture was addressed by congress in
1990 when forming the "Farm Bill" or the Food, Agriculture, Conservation, and Trade Act of 1990

My third main point is against the use of pesticides is organic and biodynamic farming. Organic
farming is a method of crop and livestock production that involves much more than choosing not to
use pesticides, fertilizers, genetically modified organisms, antibiotics and growth hormones.
Yakowski states, "Maintaining the health of the soil is a key organic principle" (16). To continue to
have healthy soil farmers need to avoid the use of genetically modified organisms (GMOs). GMOs
harm soil quality, disrupt ecosystems, and decrease annual crop yield potential. Yakowski states,
"Animals raised on an organic farm, whether chickens or cattle, must be provided with humane
living conditions, such as access to the outdoors, adequate space, grazing pastures, and organically
produced feed" (17). Keeping these living conditions help the animals to reduce potential illnesses.
Synthetic growth regulators, steroids, antibiotics, and hormones are not able to be used for the
animals at any time. Yakowski states, "Biodynamic farming incorporates many of the methods used

The mistreatment of animals in the United States is often overlooked as a major issue. Many
Americans will often show disdain for countries that consume animals that they consider to be
family, such as cats and dogs. However, most Americans do not see the hypocrisy in the
maltreatment of animals that are eaten, such as cows, pigs, and chickens. While many farms try their
best to provide humane conditions, there are over 465,000 factory farms in the United States, where
animals are treated as nothing more than a product. Factory farming is a relatively recent
agricultural practice that began around the 1950's (Factory Farming). Factory Farming is a basic
term that refers to an industrial animal production facility. There are two classifications for factory
farms; "concentrated animal feeding operation (CAFO)," and "animal feeding operation (AFO)
(Factory Farming)." When a factory farm is created it is originally classified as an AFO but once it

contributor of pollutants to waters of the United States" it upgraded to a CAFO (Factory Farming).

reliable solution to many crises within the food industry. After all, learning how to farm from the
Native Americans saved the colonies from famine during the 17th century. Fast–forward a couple

My dad is an accountant who recently turned into a farmer. He has been driving past farms for
years, yet it never crossed his mind he would be the one driving the tractor and feeding the pigs.

animal. Facilities that prioritize eggs begin by disposing of the males. Disposal may include of
electrocution, maceration, or gas asphyxiation. The remaining hens are de–beaked, a process that

Many individuals have seen or heard of the videos on the internet of various slaughterhouses across
the country as well as the videos of factory farms and how their livestock are raised, along with
Rachel Carson's various books about the dangers of pesticides. Until the 1950's, farming never used
hormones to increase growth pace to achieve meatier animals. Factory farms and the mass
production of animals have caused corporations to stop thinking about the quality of their foods, but
the quantity and efficiency in which consumers receive it. Factory farm raised animals are produced
to become our food and sold in stores, but they do not have to live in such poor, unhealthy
conditions or live short lives full of pain. While factory farms are beneficial to the economy,
ultimately they are harmful to the environment and the health of people and animals. Therefore we

Because the United States has become all about mass production and making products as fast as
possible, corporations are more concerned with quantity rather than quality. Animals are being

As time has gone on, there are major controversy over whether the methods used in the agricultural
industry are appropriate or not. One issue in particular that the Ag industry faces, is whether
conventional or organic produce is superior. A man by the name of Steven Savage has lived most of
his life with the pressure to "go organic", but he's never been fond of organic farming practices.
While growing up, his generation was influenced by the book "Silent Spring", and he was also very

increasing demand for cheap meat products it's clear that the current trajectory of the industry is on
the road to causing irreversible damage. If we are to put an end to the disastrous effect factory
farming has had on global climate change we must increase public awareness of the concerns
associated with factory farming, remove government subsides, and investigate synthetic alternative
to meat production.
Prior to the industrial revolution meat consumption in the US was drastically different than it is
today. The majority of meat consumed by a family came from animals that they had raised
themselves or was directly bought from a neighbor

Factory Farming Philosophy
My philosophy of eating is that we should simply produce/grow food more organically. First, food is
more healthy when made naturally. Second, organic food is much better than the environment, as
factory farming is harmful to it. Also, the world has many people who aren't fortunate enough to
have access to healthy food. But there are ways to solve all of these problems. Farming methods
before the concept of factory farming were more safe and healthy. The animals were fed better. No
antibiotics were needed for the animals, either. It also required more manual labor. This is why
factory farming came to be, as people did not want to do so much manually. But, despite being less
physically demanding, factory farming is bad for both the animals
