1. Why do writers add
adult humor into
children’s films?
By Dillon Guth
2. What I know
O Writers need adults to “buy into” the shows which would
result in a larger audience and ultimately more profits
O Adult content in movies is seeming to grow
O What movies did you watch as a kid?
3. “The family film was the result both of external pressures to make films
more morally-suitable for children, and the desire to engage a more middle-
class mass audience” (Hollywood, the Family Audience, 2010).
4. What I want to find out
Why is adult humor used in kids shows?
Has the amount increased?
Who started this trend?

Editor's Notes
As a kid one might not catch the subtle jokes in the movies that are targeted towards adults, but the older one gets it becomes easier to pick up on. It is always interesting to go back and watch the films you loved as a kid because most of them have some form of adult humor. When I was younger I didn’t think twice about it, but now its hard to not think about.
Why do they add those jokes? I can assume the logical reason is to lure adults into watching along with their children because parents are the ones buying into the content. The wider the audience the more money it brings in. And don’t we all know money is what drives business.
Growing up my dad hated watching most kid movies because they aren’t as relatable to adults. He did however does enjoy the newer movies such as Finding Nemo, Monsters Inc. and Cars. All of these films include jokes for adults, which is what drew my dad into watching them with us. If I had to guess I would say that more and more writers are moving towards this approach because it seems to be paying off. Why limit the programs content to only one group of people, in this case kids, when there is a larger percentage of adults in this world.
Why do they see the need for humor in kids shows and is it really effective? There has to be a reason for this because why else would writers be moving towards this approach.
When looking at the statistics how has the number increased when it comes to using that form of humor. Who were some of the tread setters for this method of writing?
When I dove more into the topic of why writers were adding more and more jokes for adults I found that my previous thoughts were true. Since both children and adults visit movie theaters or watch the shows at home they should make sure both parties are getting their fill of humor. One of the earlier franchises to use this form of writing was Disney. When they rolled out the film Aladdin in 1992 they used this ever growing writing style and it was a hit. Just about every Disney or Pixar movie since has thrown in their own subtle jokes.
The writers have different forms of these jokes, some being sarcasm, personification, satire, exaggerations, puns, and just plain awkwardness. Of these I found that satire, sarcasm, and puns were used more frequently then others.
In a study where 1359 jokes in various films were recorded, Puns had 224, Sarcasm was 155, and Satire had 631 instances.
This clip from Disney's Aladdin gives a great example of sexual humor the writers decided to use in order to get laughs from adults. Most kids wouldn’t even pick up on the line.
In monsters Inc , ”The character Yeti offers Mike and Sulley some yellow snow cones, Mike looks disgusted at the sight of them. Yellow snow is typically known for having been urinated on. The Yeti recovers him from the awkward pause by saying its lemon” (Adult Humor, 2016).
“Children’s film industry has expanded their audience to include adults who accompany their children to the theaters. There has also been an observable change in that the industry has also made the effort to expand their audience to young boys” (The Rise of Humor, 2013).
In the findings they show that writers are going away from using loveable characters and instead moving more towards male centered humor and characters. Look at most of Pixar and Disney’s latest movies. They feature, cars, monsters, pirates, bugs, robots and many more. These are typically male interests which is why the timeless slapstick humor is well accepted.
When looking at just how much money animated films make its no shock to see that all of the movies, even further back then #6, all use this new idea of the “family friendly” style. This is the reason why writers have decided to use more adult humor in their films, the money is statistically greater.
When asking yourself, “Why do writers use adult humor in kids films” all you need to do is look at what the consumer wants. Research shows that the idea of the family friendly movies gross more money then children friendly writing styles. Kids under the age of 18 only consist of roughly 23% of the population therefor companies must focus more of the mass majority of consumers and in this case its adults. Now I am not saying they need to make a full out adult centered movie but it should definitely touch on both age groups in-order to be successful in todays market.
