Does popular culture change how society views an idea? Or does popular culture reinforce dominant ideas, thereby slowing the pace of change? This week’s Discussion is broken into various threads, each of which focuses on a specific social issue. Your main post should be in the thread that corresponds to the artifact you have chosen for your Final Project. This will allow you to get a good start on your research. However, feel free to respond to classmates in any thread that interests you. Reading about how others approach their selected issues can inspire new ways to think about your own. To prepare, read through this week’s Learning Resources. For this Discussion, your Instructor will either assign groups to threads or direct you to choose one thread from the choices listed for this week. If you are directed to choose a thread on your own, follow these instructions: Each thread is limited to a maximum number of students based on class size. A thread will close if the limit is reached. If a thread is closed to new posters, select from the open threads. Discussion Prompts for Each Thread: Gender/Sexuality Popular culture has played a significant role in how gender and sexuality have been viewed over time. The term gender refers to masculine and feminine and includes transgender issues. The term sexuality refers to relations between people, whether heterosexual, homosexual, or bisexual. One significant popular culture sexuality moment occurred when the title character on the TV show Ellen , Ellen Morgan, played by Ellen DeGeneres, came out in a 1997 broadcast as gay. She became the first openly lesbian actress playing an openly lesbian character. Several other TV shows today include openly homosexual characters. Consider how audiences over time have received TV representations of gender and sexuality. Have popular culture representations of gender and sexuality pushed the issue forward? Or have they reinforced dominant ideas of what is “normal” and thereby slowed down society’s acceptance of a broader understanding of gender and sexuality? Race Popular culture has played a significant role in how race has been viewed over time. Different races and ethnicities have frequently been portrayed as stereotypes. Popular culture can have a profound effect on how an audience views racial issues. For example, The Cosby Show , which aired on NBC from 1984 to 1992, was the first time that a successful U.S. television show had portrayed an African-American family as upper middle class. One of the show’s premises was that it did not deal primarily with race issues. Although themes such as the Civil Rights Movement and African-American art and music were present, it was the representation of an African-American family as professionals with the same family issues as white American families that shifted perceptions of race. What about Latin Americans and South Americans? What about Romani, sometimes referred to as "travelers" or "traveling commu.

This paper is about TV shows and other media ‘doing the race thing right, kind of’. Pick one or two good TV shows, movies or even ad campaigns. Avoid the obvious, like ‘The Cosby Show’ and 'Fresh Prince'. Though a great shows, most people would pick them for this assignment (even amid the current Cosby controversy). The paper has two main sections that deal with the HOW and WHY questions of your research. Word count is only 1,0001,250 words, DOUBLE SPACED, but make those words count. Mention key terms, people, ideas, references. Here is a basic outline . . . INTRO: short . . . what is your topic? describe it briefly w/a little context. is it on network (NBC, etc.) or cable channels (like HBO, showtime, etc. which tend to be a bit more edgy)? what kind of ratings/viewership does it have (as a way to quantify popularity)? the cosby show was about a black uppermiddle class family living in brooklyn, ny. describe a bit more here: family dynamics, sets, dialogue, etc. it aired on NBC and was no. 1 show for a few years in 80s. on for eight years. averaged 13 to 20 million viewers each week, 30 million at its peak. any other backstory you can find. 1. HOW is it different? this is a key part! why YOU think it’s different is not enough. frame it in a larger context. one context is other tv shows/media. why is cosby different than most tv shows featuring black characters or storylines? cosby was significant in primetime tv history b/c seldom were black folks portrayed in such an affluent, positive and multidimensional way. the other context is society and culture. the cosby show challenged many assumptions about black culture by moving beyond the ‘hood’ and into the mainstream consciousness while still maintaining black cultural realities. give one or two examples. 2. WHY is this important or progressive (or not, talk about the critiques as well) cosby and shows with more complex and positive portrayals of marginalized folks nudge the general public a bit closer to acknowledgement and reality. conversations about black professionals, solid/quirky family dynamics and black pride changed somewhat because of this show. also, countless studies have shown children aspire to images they see on television. cosby was a beacon for young black folks because they’d never really experienced such a TV family and the possibilities it presented. critics of the show thought it was too unrealistic, idealistic to present such an accomplished family on TV most black people don’t live like that, so critics pushed for a more representative family. be sure to point out the good parts, but be aware of the critiques as well in the paper. kind of like the conversation we had in class about ‘orange is the new black’. finally, often our first reaction to shows about race comes as a critique about stereotypes and legacy discrimination. while true, this assignment is an attempt to expand beyond the stereotype to find ways producers are trying to create shows an.

The Chicago New Media Summit, Sept 15-16, 2008. The Talk: Legacy magazine publishers are struggling with the digital world for reasons that might not always be so obvious. Minority publications have an even greater challenge. But once they embrace that digital is not just a new publishing medium but a platform to reinvent the brand and “re-contextualize” a wealth of assets for a whole new audience, the opportunities are endless.

160 Brendon O'Connor imperialism." One of the central issues to remember at all times is that the impression that American culture gives around the world becomes how other nations get to know the United States. Think about the popular culture that you are familiar with, and it becomes easier to understand why the international image of America is of a country where everyone is rich, has a gun, wears little clothing, eats pizza and McDonald's, drinks Budweiser and Rolling Rock, and drives a SUv. We also need to understand why there is also a growing resistance in some areas of the world to exactly what U.S. culture represents and fears that national iden tity will be lost in the flood of American media and product. Bored with USA? BRENDON O'CONNOR Dr. Brendon a 'Connor is a senior lecturer at the School ofPolitics and Public Policy-Griffith University in Brisbane, Australia. He was educated at Monash University and LaTrobe University, and in 2000 he was invited to Harvard University as Visiting Scholar From 1998 to 1999 he worked as Social Research Officer for the national Development Research Institutes in New York City. Dr. O'Connor has extensive publications and conference experience, and his research interests focus on American politics, cultural influence, and welfare reform. In 2003 the Fulbright Commission funded a symposium orga nized by Dr. O'Connor that discussed Americanization and anti Americanism. This article, which appeared in the The Courier Mail in Brisbane on June 21,2003, was published to coincide with that event. ------+ A merican culture is part of Australian mass consumer culture, like it or not, dude! It dominates our television, radio stations, movie theatres, fashion and our imagination. We are effectively governed from Washington DC with our cultural menu set by producers in Los Angeles and designers in New York. Resistance is futile and likely to mean you are totally uncool. In short, we are all Americans now. This summary of affairs is, of course, an exagger ated view of reality, although plenty of Australians probably watch American sitcoms, own American CDs and DVDs, and dress in American fashion labels right down to their Calvin Klein underwear. Bored with USA? 161 Those who reject claims of American cultural imperialism in Australia might respond: Isn't talk of American songs or under wear an overly nationalistic outlook? Isn't a lot of American culture just part of mass consumer culture, as the U.S. has the biggest studios, media empires, fashion companies, and market ing machines? And don't American talent houses draw on the best ideas and individuals from around the globe? However, such responses present only part of the story. Global and Australian culture clearly has been Americanized, particularly since World War II. Although put-downs of American culture often run roughshod over the sheer diversity of American cultural output, it is entirely underst.

Wizards are very useful for creating a good user experience. In all businesses, interactive sessions are most beneficial. To improve the user experience, wizards in Odoo provide an interactive session. For creating wizards, we can use transient models or abstract models. This gives features of a model class except the data storing. Transient and abstract models have permanent database persistence. For them, database tables are made, and the records in such tables are kept until they are specifically erased.
