This document discusses the new period of European imperialism in the late 19th century. During this time, European nations demanded greater control over the economies, politics, and societies of the lands they conquered. They sought to shape the economies of these territories to their benefit and establish European customs. Each European power had its own methods for controlling colonies, such as direct or indirect rule for Britain. Different forms of imperialism included colonies, protectorates, spheres of influence, and economic imperialism. This period transformed conquered territories more thoroughly than previous waves of imperialism.

IMPERIALISM

2. WHAT HAPPENED?
• This new period of imperialism was very
different. During this period of imperialism,
European nations demanded more influence in
economy, political and social lives of people.
• European nations wanted
to shape the economy of
the lands they conquer to
get benefits and also they
wanted to establish
European customs in
those lands.
3. CONTROL OF EUROPEAN NATIONS
• Each European nation had a different
objective and technique to establish colonies.
For example:
GREAT BRITAN
DIRECT CONTROL INDIRECT CONTROL
4. Direct control Indirect control
• This type of control,
gives the nations a
little bit of power and
freedom.
• Local governors can rule
the territory and can
participate in politics.
• Goal: develop future
leaders.
• Limited self-rule.
• Used a paternalism
policy, they provided
needs to the territories,
but didn’t give them
rights.
• Only Europeans could rule
the territories and
participate in politics.
• They used another policy
named assimilation (based on
the idea that local populations
eventually would become as
the European).
• No self-rule.
5. DIFFERENT FORMS OF
IMPERIALISM
• COLONY: a territory governed by a foreign power.
• PROTECTORATE: territory with own government,
but under control of outside power.
• SPHERE OF INFLUENCE: area in which an outside
power claims certain economic privileges.
• ECONOMIC IMPERIALISM: independent but less-developed
territory controlled by private businesses
6. Conclusion
• This period of imperialism was very different from
the previous ones. The other ones were about
exploration and taking the natural resources, and
this one was about transforming the territories.
To accomplish this, the European nations used
different strategies. Some of them were more
peaceful and some of them were more
repressive.
