Is Torture A Necessary Evil
Torture: A Necessary Evil
Since the beginning of time, torture has been used politically and socially to change the tides of civilization. The definition of torture according to
Dictionary.com is, "the action or practice of inflicting severe pain on someone as a punishment or to force them to do or say something, or for the
pleasure of the person inflicting the pain." While this definition fully suits certain parts and certain peoples of the world, it does not or should not fit the
United States' definition in regards to human law. The Constitution and its moral rights have shaped America so that the American military (held to
higher standards than any other military in the world) would not torture a person for the pleasure of inflicting pain ... Show more content on

Currently, many people believe that by using torture or enhanced interrogation techniques, America would be straying from her democratic beliefs,
moral ideals, and humane ideas; however, there could be nothing further from the truth. There could be nothing more inhumane than doing absolutely
nothing and watch as innocent people are being tortured or killed (Bagaric). The United States Government must realize that innocent American lives
are paramount and they should not be treated or equally compared to that of a destructive barbaric extremist. In accomplishing this, they must come
to a consensus that not everyone in this world is equal nor should they be treated as such. A terrorist who has murdered virtuous people in the past
and would willingly proceed to do it again should not be looked to as an equal person deserving rights. For

Racial Profiling Is A Necessary Evil
Racial Profiling
In order to understand racial profiling, it must first be correctly defined. Although different authors use different criteria for the term racial profiling,
the definition for the word racial is "of, relating to, or based on a race The definition the dictionary puts forth for profiling is "the act of suspecting or
targeting a person solely on the basis of observed characteristics or behavior." Based on these definitions, racial profiling could be defined for criminal
justice purposes as targeting a person based solely on the characteristic of race. Most people, law enforcement officers included, would consider
racial profiling based on this definition as ethically wrong. However, a case must be made for the use of profiling based on race in some
circumstances. Racial profiling a sore topic when it comes to policing, it is a necessary evil. Racial profiling is a term used to describe the practice of
targeting or stopping an individual based primarily on race or ethnicity, rather than on individualized suspicion or probable cause. It became
particularly politicized in the late 1990s as police departments came under media and political scrutiny for disproportionately targeting minority drivers
(Farrell, McDevitt, Cronin, and Pierce, 2003; Harris, 2002; Weitzer and Brunson, in press). Civil rights organizations such as the American Civil
Liberties Union (ACLU) and the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) launched national media

Summary: The Necessary Evil Of Gerrymandering
Sarah Newell
Mr. Adams
AP Government
23 February 2016
The Necessary Evil of Gerrymandering Gerrymandering has existed long before there was a word directly referring to the action it entails.
Gerrymandering is essentially the changing and controlling of district boundaries in order to manipulate the outcome. The term, which was printed for
the first time in 1812, is a combination of the word "salamander"– the reason for this being that the first district (in Massachusetts) to be gerrymandered
resembled the animal– and the last name of the governor of Massachusetts at the time, Elbridge Gerry. The manipulation of the outcome of
congressional elections is rooted from corruption and the lack of a "perfect" way to please both the majority and the minorities in drawing the district
boundaries. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
As long as people in positions of power are able to influence the process of drawing district boundaries, it can never be fair. In this viewpoint, the
notion of fair being a myth under the current circumstances is present. However, if the task was delegated to a private company, there is a greater
opportunity for a fair outcome– if a fair outcome could ever exist, it would come from privatization. The way the districts are created can and will
decide an election, so as long is it can be influenced by government officials and those looking to be reelected, as long as it is being abused to create
an outcome suited for a certain group of people, as long as it is left in the hands of legislatures, corruption will continue to be the most prevalent

Do Justification, Belief And Trust Really Describe Knowledge?
Do justification, belief and trust really describe knowledge? For the philosopher Plato, justification, belief and trust defines knowledge. This theory was
popularly accepted until the philosopher Edmund Gettier proposed the contrary. Gettier suggested that knowledge is more than trust, justification and
belief. According to Gettier,Plato's theory does not define knowledge, because trust, belief and justification can be satisfied, but still these conditions
do not led to knowledge. Knowledge from my point of view is more complex than what Plato proposed. In this essay, I shall first describe Gettiers
arguments, and provide counterexample of why true, belief and justification fail to define knowledge, which finally, I shall present a possible solution
to this philosophical problem.
The JTB theory infers that in order to define knowledge, we should consider the sufficient and necessary conditions. According to the JTB:
A)K knows that P IFF I) K accepts L II) K has evidences for L III) L is true
Thus, we should accept or believe, has enough evidences or justifications, and be true. These are the necessary and sufficient conditions for knowledge.
In epistemology, the JTB theory states that in order for something to be define as to be knowledge, we should engage justification, belief and trust as
sufficient and necessary conditions for knowledge. Thus, without any of these, we cannot have understanding. Consequently, let's consider

Punishment Is A Necessary Evil And Punishment
'Those who won our independence by revolution were not cowards' [Supreme Court Associates Justice; Louis Brandeis]
This essay will aim to support the idea that throughout history, prisons and other institutions did not only punish the guilty, but control those otherwise
socially excluded from society by reasons of poverty, gender or social class. (Some of the most fundamental divisions in society.)
Punishment is a necessary evil and punishment is evoked when someone is believed to have done wrong. It symbolizes and erects moral judgment and
sustains solidarity and collective consciousness. [Cesaroni 2010]
Prison is just one of a number of sanctions available to the courts to deal with those who commit criminal offenses. History shows that prisons (and
the 'system') have not always been as fair and just as it now is in the 21st century. (Arguable) Offenders who are convicted and then sentenced to
spend time imprisoned are often those who are socially excluded from society, the poor, deprived, those with alcohol or drug dependencies or those
with mental health issues. Imprisonment today, is one of the harshest sanctions available, yet, the prison systems incorporate psychology, psychiatrics
and sociology (in the United Kingdom) but this has not always been the case. [Georg Rusche 2003] The death penalty was once widely accepted.
Prisons were created as a means of control. In the 16th and 17th century according to Flynn [1998] prison was a place for people awaiting trial,

Decision-Making In Richard Bessel's Necessary Evil
It seems, at least according to Richard Bessel, historians "have come to doubt the importance of neither the orders given by the Nazi leadership nor the
institutional context in which these orders were given and carried out." More important than functionalism or intentionalism, Bessel argues, are
arguments of a moral nature. However, these historiographical sides had somewhat fought for moral superiority, with intentionalists accusing
functionalists of focusing on "underlying logic, embedded in processes of decision–making... was to ignore individual human responsibility–and, in the
case of the monstrous crimes of Nazism, in effect to be guilty of a dereliction of one's moral duty." This battle for the high ground, he claims, saved

Essay on Slavery in America: From Necessary to Evil
As African slaves began arriving in the Chesapeake region in the early seventeenth century, they were treated, in many respects, akin to white
indentured servants shipped in from England. For instance, a black could, under the right conditions sue for his or her freedom, or if the slave
converted to Christianity he or she could obtain their freedom. Towards the latter half of the seventeenth century however, planters began to
systematically strip slaves of their minimal rights. Until the mid–nineteenth century, slaves across the south were treated like beasts of burden, thus
traded, sold, and ranked not among beings, but among things, as an article of property. Throughout the colonial periodslavery continued to expand
across the south, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
By the nineteenth century, abolishing slavery was beginning to acquire real force as a basic principle, as some Northern states began gradual
emancipation.
Abolitionism blossomed in the United States in the 1830's, as theologians and reformers attempted to transform the American social fabric. An
important source of antislavery sentiment derived from the Puritan and Quaker religions that dominated much of the political and social aspects of the
daily life of northerners. The anti–slavery sentiment was not, however, confined to whites in the northern states. A mulatto abolitionist and social
reformer, Frederick Douglass, lectured during the 1840's and 1850's to draw attention to the plight of slaves and the immediate need for emancipation.
During a "Fourth of July Oration" in 1852, Douglass incisively showed a commitment to individual rights for blacks. In the speech, Douglass praised
America's accomplishments in becoming a sovereign nation, yet he believed it to be an injustice that not all humans living in this "great nation"
received its blessings. For Douglass and most slaves in the antebellum era, the Fourth of July and American Independence represented the lack of
freedom injustices they continued to endure. Yet blacks still struggled to form social bonds under the worst of conditions and yearned to be free.
There was a basic tenet among the proslavery arguments that slaves were docile, contented, faithful, and loyal. In fact, no evidence has surfaced even

Curiosity Can Be A Necessary Evil
Curiosity can be a necessary evil. Certainly, being inquisitive leads to the accumulation of knowledge, which brings about progression and
improvement, but it has its drawbacks. This is a very important theme in the story Frankenstein by Mary Shelly. In the story, Frankenstein went in
pursuit of the "elixir of life" (Shelly Web). He wanted to find a way to give and restore life (Shelly Web).Frankenstein did discover a way to perform
such unhallowed arts, but ultimately it led to his ruin (Shelly Web). He lost all that he loved and much of his sanity before his death (Shelly Web). Yet
he was not the only one destroyed by his curiosity. The monster he created was at first content, reveling in the wonders of nature, but he sought out ...

The earliest form of natural science was alchemy. The most common first thought when alchemy is mentioned is turning elementary metals into gold.
However, there is much more to it than that. Near the time of 100 AD is when alchemy first began in the western hemisphere, specifically Alexandria,
Egypt, the joint of Greek and eastern cultures (Encyclopedia Americana Vol. 1: 510). One of the most popular theories that lay the foundation for
alchemy was that of Aristotle, written about the 4th century BC (510). That is the theory that heat, cold, moisture, and dryness are the base
characteristics of all matter, and they combine to create the four elements: fire, water, earth, and air (510). Frankenstein more than certainly
incorporated these ideas in his chemistry experiments. Although at first he left the medieval books alone and followed the new ideas of the modern
scientists of the time, after professor M. Waldman presented him with an open mind, he reverted to the primitive ideas of chemistry (Shelley Web).
Of course, today most ideas from this branch of science are rejected, such as translating metals to gold. But it was the earliest form of the branch of
science known as natural science, which Frankenstein studied at the university Ingolstadt (Shelly Web). The essence of the natural sciences surrounds
the natural, physical world and the occurrences thereof (Merriam–Webster). It is no surprise that this was the basis of Frankenstein's studies. From a

Hunnigan was taken aback by Lord Caen's offer. The stress must have been getting to the man if he uttered those words. Stress must had gotten to her
as well as she was considering the notion. She did have business matters to discuss with him, better to do it then instead of pushing it back even longer.
Footsteps echoed as Lady Mossbow caught up with the second most dreaded man in the Capitol.
"As much as I love the company of the flowers, alas they do not give me ale." The book was held up by one arm while the free arm hanged by her
side. It was best to keep the subject off of the meeting. "Although, the day flowers give me ale or mead is the last day anyone will ever see me."
Hunnigan suppressed a laugh at her own joke, she never laughed. Her real laugh was not proper for a lady like the other women would practise.
When she was a child, Hunnigan remembered her younger brother, the only other sibling at the time, calling her a donkey which led to him having a
broken nose and crying for Lord Bryce Mossbow. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Essay on The Death Penalty Is A Necessary Evil
The death penalty is a necessary evil that has a positive effect on society today. It is an effective deterrent of crime as well as a safeguard for society.
It also helps to keep order in our cities. It is a just and effective punishment for those who have committed crimes heinous enough to deserve death.
The death penalty is not a new idea in our world. Its origins date back over
3,700 years to the Babylonian civilization, where it was prescribed for a variety of crimes. (Capital Punishment p.10). It was also greatly used in the
Greek and Roman empires. It continued into England during the Middle Ages, and then to the American colonies where it exists still today. In the

murders^Г”
(http://www.rit.edu/~wwl2461/cp.html). This proves that without the death penalty our murder rate would be immense. For example in Utah on June 10,
1988 Arthur Gary Bishop was executed for sodomizing and then killing a group of young boys. In the first half of the year (January–June) there were
26 murders in Utah. In the second half (July–December) there were only 21 murders, an almost 20% drop in the murder rate.

Why Is Christianity Necessary Evil?
First Christianity, in a Calvinistic way, understands that as a consequence of the fallen nature, humankind is enslaved to the service of sin,
subsequently, apart from the efficacious or prevenient grace of God, and is totally incapable of choosing to follow God or find the pathway to
salvation. You will agree that from experience, no parent ever taught any child to be bad. Children as innocent as they are, have the propensity to be
very selfish among other negative traits, a natural inclination to which they are powerless against, as a result of being genetically predisposed to have
evil characters. Parents are known to teach their children how to behave well, which proofs that man is depraved and needs to be salvaged. Christianity,

Theoretical Orientation Analysis : Person Centered Therapy
Theoretical Orientation Analysis: Person–Centered Therapy
My Philosophy My beliefs about human life are intricate. We are complex individuals that are shaped not only by our genes, but also by our
environments, our experiences and interactions with others. Surely, the way that people behave can be due to psychological disorders that we are
not at fault for, however, I also believe that issues involving anxiety, stress and depression are often perpetuated by our own thinking processes and
how we feel about ourselves in comparison to the beliefs of others. Often times, I feel that having someone to listen, validate, empathize and care for
us is what it takes for change to take place. As social beings, I believe that through interactions with a person who we care about and a person that
cares about us, improvements can be made. In this paper, I will discuss how my philosophy of life relates to that of person–centered therapy, as
described by Sharf (2016).
Human Nature, Personality, Pathology Person–centered therapy views people from a positive perspective. While therapists may not always agree
with the choices that a person makes, they always try to accept a person for who they are. The belief is that people can change and become
self–actualized. Person–centered therapy focuses on the belief that people's personalities are influenced by internal and external factors. These
experiences will be different for everyone, because we are all exposed to different social and

Discussion on Whether Stalin Was a Necessary Evil Essay
Discussion on Whether Stalin Was a Necessary Evil
Marxism was a doctrine formulated by Karl Marx about the elimination of economic inequality and class conflicts. According to Marxism social and
political relationships depend on economic factors because whichever group in society controls the "means of production" also has political control.
Marx believed that historical change was a series of stages that were influenced by economic forces and that each stage had to be completed before the
next could begin. In a classes and stateless society, co–operation will replace competition and this final and perfect stage of human history would be
communism.
In Russia the government was essentially feudal, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
By the end of October 1917 the Bolsheviks, led by Lenin, seized power and began to establish a communist state.
Lenin introduced in March 1921 the New Economic Policy (NEP) that allowed a temporary return to capitalist polices by relaxing government
controls in order to stop rebellions, improve agricultural production, encourage trade and industry and end the desperate famine. Russia moved away
from the principle of centralised government control but still by 1928 production levels barely approached pre war levels.
Lenin's death in 1924 began a period of debate over the direction the Revolution should take. Since Lenin gave no directions as to how the Soviet Union
should move on from the NEP or how long it should last, similar to the situation crated after Stalin's death, a debate arose that ultimately became power
struggle for the leadership of the Party and the Soviet Union between Joseph Stalin and Leon Trotsky. Stalin felt intellectually inferior to others and so
to differentiate himself he developed the idea of "Socialism in one country", which was the antithesis of Marxism. He advocated that world revolution
could only take place when the Soviet Union had strengthened its position through industrialisation because it was isolated and surrounded by "hostile"
countries. The idea that

The Bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, Japan: A Necessary...
On August 6 and August 9, 1945, the cities and people of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, Japan would experience something that no other people had ever

Hiroshima and Nagasaki, Japan would become the testing ground and their people the test dummies for a new kind of war weapon; the atomic bomb.
Was this act necessary to bring an end to World War II as has been claimed? No, it was not.

The end of the war looked to be just around the corner. But how much did that matter to those that wanted to see just what their new creation of the
atom bomb could really do?
In April of 1945, Kantaro Suzuki had taken over as head of the Japanese government and made it his top priority to put an end to the war. He knew
when Germany surrendered, the focus of American and British forces would be turned to Japan. His people were already suffering enough and enough
of his country had been destroyed before his eyes, and he wanted the devastation and anguish to end.
By June of 1945, the United States had been dropping bomb after bomb on many of the cities of Japan without any real sort of retaliation from the
Japanese for over six months (Atomic Bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki: Wikipedia). Why? Because by then, Japan's military forces had all but
cease to exist. Cities had been reduced to ruins by the never–ending attacks. Bombs fell out of the sky like rain from storm clouds. Production of
weapons, or anything, in what was left of buildings and factories that once stood was virtually impossible (Weber). A fourth of the population was left
homeless and near death from starvation. Transportation was practically nonexistent. The country of Japan was on the verge of collapse, and they
knew it. Little did they know it was only going to get worse.

Wal–Mart: A Necessary Evil?
It does not take a large amount of funding and private studies to see that Wal–Mart is a widely successful corporation that offers cheaper prices than
their competitors. In Jack and Suzy Welch's essay they argue that we should support businesses that help individuals, communities and whole
economies prosper, they claim that, "Wal–Mart helps individuals, communities, and whole economies prosper" (161), so we should support Wal–Mart.
On the other hand, Paul Krugman argues that we should not support businesses that pay badly and offer minimal benefits, he claims that Wal–Mart
"pays badly and offers minimal benefits" (166), therefor we should not support Wal–Mart. I believe that Krugman wrote a more persuasive essay
because unlike the Welch's, he does not have a personal affiliation with Wal
–Mart, however his argument is hardly persuasive because it focuses on
probable scenarios that occur when a Wal–Mart is built but does not offer credible statistics to back it up. I believe that Wal–Mart's business practices
do not outweigh the cost to the American Workers because it undermines their abilities when they are receiving low wages, promoting them to use
social assistance programs and forcing other companies to downsize.
In Jack and Suzy Welch's essay they attempt to debunk common myths and assumptions about Wal

success has made it a "fat target for critics who, for reasons of their own, won't concede how

We believe that because of whom his father is, social decisions are Yeatter 3 already made for him. As his peers, we must discover a way to

not let a person's father's social status define his or her personality or, let it define how that person should behave in a social environment. Having
an open mind can be one way in which we can help defeat this type of social judgment. Discrimination of any one on the basis of physical attributes

Necessary Evil: An Analysis
The presence of unnecessary evil in the world has sparked controversy about the existence of an omnipotent, omnibenevolent, and omniscient being.
The problem of evil, in its most basic sense, claims that the evil in the world is unnecessary and contradictory to the existence of God. In this essay I
will briefly summarize the logical problem of evil given by J. L. Mackie and the evidential problem of evil provided by William Rowe. I will then
dispute that these arguments are irrelevant because humans are incredibly limited and cannot comprehend the purposes of God. I will then present an

even without understanding the wills of God, humans have defined suffering and God should have eliminated it. However, I concluded that despite
this strong rebuttal it was not sufficient in withstanding my critique because it still assumes the intentions of God. Ultimately the problems of evil
assume the thoughts of God and as such do not discredit God's

such as murder but have not executed anyone during the last 10 years and are believed to have a policy or established practice of not carrying out
executions, meaning that a total of 135 of the world's nations have turned their back on capital punishment in law or

Why Is Bernard Williams Fear Of Death Is A Necessary Evil
Bernard Williams believes that immortality, or a state without death would be meaningless. Williams argues that we should not be fearful of death, as
he brings up the character Elina whom is a woman aged three hundred and forty–two. She has been forty–two years old for three hundred years. Elina
was immortalized, and her unending life became extremely boring, and unsatisfying. Death in this paradigm, was meaningless, and death was not an
evil. I agree with Williams argument about death not being an evil as death is an ending of great suffering. I believe that living a short meaningful life
is much better than a long unsatisfying one. An unending life gives us an infinite amount of time which eventually leads to boredom. Hence, the
correlation

USS Maine: A Necessary Evil
Four days ago there was a naked act of aggression against the United States. Our ship the USS Maine which was stationed in Havana Harbor in Cuba
to keep the peace and attempt to ease tensions between the Spanish dogs and the Cuban rebels was destroyed. There are several theories circulating as
to why the Maine exploded but the most prevalent is sabotage there are many suspected groups and individuals We have found that the Spanish are the
most likely culprits. The Spanish Ambassador to America denies guilt profusely which is to be expected of the guilty party, he also often repeats it was
an accident which tips our suspicions their way. The Cubans also claim that they know nothing although they have not yet been ruled out as suspect

In Adriana Craciun's Dacre: A Necessary Evil
These monsters are not just boogeymen hiding in closets. These are men of society with a place on the social ladder. Furthermore, these works of
literature access the fears of the society at the time. Satan disguised himself as the Moorish dark–skinned servant. Resulting in much criticism, it is a
ground–breaking part of this novel. Adriana Craciun argues that Dacre was inspired by an earlier novel entitled Zoflora for her antagonist. She said
that by doing this Dacre was 'offering an unsympathetic and unsentimental (though thoroughly exoticized) portrayal of a black slave in the year
preceding the passage of the anti–slave trade bill' (Craciun 17). Although, as Victoria and Zofloya's relationship progresses, so does his social status.

Bikie Gangs In Macbeth's Necessary Evil
Picture this, a young man, a fan of the popular TV show "Sons of Anarchy" interrogated by Police for supposedly wearing a prohibited item, his
favourite leather jacket. Is this an example of Macbeth's madness in modern day existence? Have Campbell Newman's introduced laws targeting
criminal gangs including bikie gangs got out of control and consequently cost him the throne? Has this praying mantis' motivation for political
expediency mirrored that seen by Macbeth. The previous Premier of Queensland, Campbell Newman was initially seen as the brave warrior fighting
the looming enemy. He had taken on the bikie gangs supposedly responsible for the production and dissemination of illegal substances. Newman was
prepared to do what was convenient

Slavery: A Necessary Evil
Slavery: A Necessary Evil
"The fact is, that civilization requires slaves. The Greeks were quite right there. Unless there are slaves to do the ugly, horrible, uninteresting work,
culture and contemplation become almost impossible." – OSCAR WILDE, The Soul of Man Under Socialism
!
The issue of slavery has been debated for hundreds, if not thousands, of years. It is of undisputed awareness that the act of enslaving another man or
women is to strip them of their civil and natural liberties. It is also of uncontested certainty that no man or women would will– ingly chose to be a
slave. And although slavery and it's accompanied hardships are often seen as no less than an ultimate evil, it is also an indisputable fact that humanity
has enslaved its brethren since the dawn of mankind1. As rational beings, we must put aside our presumptions, precon– ceived notions, and emotionally
biased opinions of slavery and ask ourselves; why? One would think that if enslavement was such an unspeakable evil, it would have no place in our
civil soci– ety. Yet, slavery time and time again has appeared as a fundamental part of many of the worlds most powerfull civilizations and societies
throughout history. This is because slavery is a power– full tool and a necessary evil. The Greeks, Romans, Mongols, Ottomans, Egyptians, Ghana's,
Mali's, Songhai's, and Kanem–Bornu's (the former four being powerfull African empires) all

Is Torture A Necessary Evil

  • 1. Is Torture A Necessary Evil Torture: A Necessary Evil Since the beginning of time, torture has been used politically and socially to change the tides of civilization. The definition of torture according to Dictionary.com is, "the action or practice of inflicting severe pain on someone as a punishment or to force them to do or say something, or for the pleasure of the person inflicting the pain." While this definition fully suits certain parts and certain peoples of the world, it does not or should not fit the United States' definition in regards to human law. The Constitution and its moral rights have shaped America so that the American military (held to higher standards than any other military in the world) would not torture a person for the pleasure of inflicting pain ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Currently, many people believe that by using torture or enhanced interrogation techniques, America would be straying from her democratic beliefs, moral ideals, and humane ideas; however, there could be nothing further from the truth. There could be nothing more inhumane than doing absolutely nothing and watch as innocent people are being tortured or killed (Bagaric). The United States Government must realize that innocent American lives are paramount and they should not be treated or equally compared to that of a destructive barbaric extremist. In accomplishing this, they must come to a consensus that not everyone in this world is equal nor should they be treated as such. A terrorist who has murdered virtuous people in the past and would willingly proceed to do it again should not be looked to as an equal person deserving rights. For ... • 2. Racial Profiling Is A Necessary Evil Racial Profiling In order to understand racial profiling, it must first be correctly defined. Although different authors use different criteria for the term racial profiling, the definition for the word racial is "of, relating to, or based on a race The definition the dictionary puts forth for profiling is "the act of suspecting or targeting a person solely on the basis of observed characteristics or behavior." Based on these definitions, racial profiling could be defined for criminal justice purposes as targeting a person based solely on the characteristic of race. Most people, law enforcement officers included, would consider racial profiling based on this definition as ethically wrong. However, a case must be made for the use of profiling based on race in some circumstances. Racial profiling a sore topic when it comes to policing, it is a necessary evil. Racial profiling is a term used to describe the practice of targeting or stopping an individual based primarily on race or ethnicity, rather than on individualized suspicion or probable cause. It became particularly politicized in the late 1990s as police departments came under media and political scrutiny for disproportionately targeting minority drivers (Farrell, McDevitt, Cronin, and Pierce, 2003; Harris, 2002; Weitzer and Brunson, in press). Civil rights organizations such as the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) and the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) launched national media ... • 3. Summary: The Necessary Evil Of Gerrymandering Sarah Newell Mr. Adams AP Government 23 February 2016 The Necessary Evil of Gerrymandering Gerrymandering has existed long before there was a word directly referring to the action it entails. Gerrymandering is essentially the changing and controlling of district boundaries in order to manipulate the outcome. The term, which was printed for the first time in 1812, is a combination of the word "salamander"– the reason for this being that the first district (in Massachusetts) to be gerrymandered resembled the animal– and the last name of the governor of Massachusetts at the time, Elbridge Gerry. The manipulation of the outcome of congressional elections is rooted from corruption and the lack of a "perfect" way to please both the majority and the minorities in drawing the district boundaries. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... As long as people in positions of power are able to influence the process of drawing district boundaries, it can never be fair. In this viewpoint, the notion of fair being a myth under the current circumstances is present. However, if the task was delegated to a private company, there is a greater opportunity for a fair outcome– if a fair outcome could ever exist, it would come from privatization. The way the districts are created can and will decide an election, so as long is it can be influenced by government officials and those looking to be reelected, as long as it is being abused to create an outcome suited for a certain group of people, as long as it is left in the hands of legislatures, corruption will continue to be the most prevalent association with ... • 4. Do Justification, Belief And Trust Really Describe Knowledge? Do justification, belief and trust really describe knowledge? For the philosopher Plato, justification, belief and trust defines knowledge. This theory was popularly accepted until the philosopher Edmund Gettier proposed the contrary. Gettier suggested that knowledge is more than trust, justification and belief. According to Gettier,Plato's theory does not define knowledge, because trust, belief and justification can be satisfied, but still these conditions do not led to knowledge. Knowledge from my point of view is more complex than what Plato proposed. In this essay, I shall first describe Gettiers arguments, and provide counterexample of why true, belief and justification fail to define knowledge, which finally, I shall present a possible solution to this philosophical problem. The JTB theory infers that in order to define knowledge, we should consider the sufficient and necessary conditions. According to the JTB: A)K knows that P IFF I) K accepts L II) K has evidences for L III) L is true Thus, we should accept or believe, has enough evidences or justifications, and be true. These are the necessary and sufficient conditions for knowledge. In epistemology, the JTB theory states that in order for something to be define as to be knowledge, we should engage justification, belief and trust as sufficient and necessary conditions for knowledge. Thus, without any of these, we cannot have understanding. Consequently, let's consider ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 5. Punishment Is A Necessary Evil And Punishment 'Those who won our independence by revolution were not cowards' [Supreme Court Associates Justice; Louis Brandeis] This essay will aim to support the idea that throughout history, prisons and other institutions did not only punish the guilty, but control those otherwise socially excluded from society by reasons of poverty, gender or social class. (Some of the most fundamental divisions in society.) Punishment is a necessary evil and punishment is evoked when someone is believed to have done wrong. It symbolizes and erects moral judgment and sustains solidarity and collective consciousness. [Cesaroni 2010] Prison is just one of a number of sanctions available to the courts to deal with those who commit criminal offenses. History shows that prisons (and the 'system') have not always been as fair and just as it now is in the 21st century. (Arguable) Offenders who are convicted and then sentenced to spend time imprisoned are often those who are socially excluded from society, the poor, deprived, those with alcohol or drug dependencies or those with mental health issues. Imprisonment today, is one of the harshest sanctions available, yet, the prison systems incorporate psychology, psychiatrics and sociology (in the United Kingdom) but this has not always been the case. [Georg Rusche 2003] The death penalty was once widely accepted. Prisons were created as a means of control. • 6. Decision-Making In Richard Bessel's Necessary Evil It seems, at least according to Richard Bessel, historians "have come to doubt the importance of neither the orders given by the Nazi leadership nor the institutional context in which these orders were given and carried out." More important than functionalism or intentionalism, Bessel argues, are arguments of a moral nature. However, these historiographical sides had somewhat fought for moral superiority, with intentionalists accusing functionalists of focusing on "underlying logic, embedded in processes of decision–making... was to ignore individual human responsibility–and, in the case of the monstrous crimes of Nazism, in effect to be guilty of a dereliction of one's moral duty." • 7. Essay on Slavery in America: From Necessary to Evil As African slaves began arriving in the Chesapeake region in the early seventeenth century, they were treated, in many respects, akin to white indentured servants shipped in from England. For instance, a black could, under the right conditions sue for his or her freedom, or if the slave converted to Christianity he or she could obtain their freedom. Towards the latter half of the seventeenth century however, planters began to systematically strip slaves of their minimal rights. Until the mid–nineteenth century, slaves across the south were treated like beasts of burden, thus traded, sold, and ranked not among beings, but among things, as an article of property. Throughout the colonial periodslavery continued to expand across the south, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... By the nineteenth century, abolishing slavery was beginning to acquire real force as a basic principle, as some Northern states began gradual emancipation. Abolitionism blossomed in the United States in the 1830's, as theologians and reformers attempted to transform the American social fabric. An important source of antislavery sentiment derived from the Puritan and Quaker religions that dominated much of the political and social aspects of the daily life of northerners. The anti–slavery sentiment was not, however, confined to whites in the northern states. A mulatto abolitionist and social reformer, Frederick Douglass, lectured during the 1840's and 1850's to draw attention to the plight of slaves and the immediate need for emancipation. During a "Fourth of July Oration" in 1852, Douglass incisively showed a commitment to individual rights for blacks. In the speech, Douglass praised America's accomplishments in becoming a sovereign nation, yet he believed it to be an injustice that not all humans living in this "great nation" received its blessings. For Douglass and most slaves in the antebellum era, the Fourth of July and American Independence represented the lack of freedom injustices they continued to endure. Yet blacks still struggled to form social bonds under the worst of conditions and yearned to be free. There was a basic tenet among the proslavery arguments that slaves were docile, contented, faithful, and loyal. In fact, no evidence has surfaced even ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Certainly, being inquisitive leads to the accumulation of knowledge, which brings about progression and improvement, but it has its drawbacks. He wanted to find a way to give and restore life (Shelly Web).Frankenstein did discover a way to perform such unhallowed arts, but ultimately it led to his ruin (Shelly Web). The most common first thought when alchemy is mentioned is turning elementary metals into gold. However, there is much more to it than that. Near the time of 100 AD is when alchemy first began in the western hemisphere, specifically Alexandria, Egypt, the joint of Greek and eastern cultures (Encyclopedia Americana Vol. 1: 510). One of the most popular theories that lay the foundation for alchemy was that of Aristotle, written about the 4th century BC (510). That is the theory that heat, cold, moisture, and dryness are the base characteristics of all matter, and they combine to create the four elements: fire, water, earth, and air (510). Frankenstein more than certainly incorporated these ideas in his chemistry experiments. Although at first he left the medieval books alone and followed the new ideas of the modern scientists of the time, after professor M. Waldman presented him with an open mind, he reverted to the primitive ideas of chemistry (Shelley Web). Of course, today most ideas from this branch of science are rejected, such as translating metals to gold. But it was the earliest form of the branch of science known as natural science, which Frankenstein studied at the university Ingolstadt (Shelly Web). The essence of the natural sciences surrounds the natural, physical world and the occurrences thereof (Merriam–Webster). It is no surprise that this was the basis of Frankenstein's studies. Stress must had gotten to her as well as she was considering the notion. She did have business matters to discuss with him, better to do it then instead of pushing it back even longer. Footsteps echoed as Lady Mossbow caught up with the second most dreaded man in the Capitol. "As much as I love the company of the flowers, alas they do not give me ale." The book was held up by one arm while the free arm hanged by her side. It was best to keep the subject off of the meeting. "Although, the day flowers give me ale or mead is the last day anyone will ever see me." Hunnigan suppressed a laugh at her own joke, she never laughed. Her real laugh was not proper for a lady like the other women would practise. When she was a child, Hunnigan remembered her younger brother, the only other sibling at the time, calling her a donkey which led to him having a broken nose and crying for Lord Bryce Mossbow. ... It is an effective deterrent of crime as well as a safeguard for society. It also helps to keep order in our cities. Its origins date back over 3,700 years to the Babylonian civilization, where it was prescribed for a variety of crimes. (Capital Punishment p.10). This proves that without the death penalty our murder rate would be immense. For example in Utah on June 10, 1988 Arthur Gary Bishop was executed for sodomizing and then killing a group of young boys. In the first half of the year (January–June) there were 26 murders in Utah. In the second half (July–December) there were only 21 murders, an almost 20% drop in the murder rate. (http://www.rit.edu/~wwl2461/cp.html). First Christianity, in a Calvinistic way, understands that as a consequence of the fallen nature, humankind is enslaved to the service of sin, subsequently, apart from the efficacious or prevenient grace of God, and is totally incapable of choosing to follow God or find the pathway to salvation. You will agree that from experience, no parent ever taught any child to be bad. Children as innocent as they are, have the propensity to be very selfish among other negative traits, a natural inclination to which they are powerless against, as a result of being genetically predisposed to have evil characters. Parents are known to teach their children how to behave well, which proofs that man is depraved and needs to be salvaged. Christianity, uniquely ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 12. Theoretical Orientation Analysis : Person Centered Therapy Theoretical Orientation Analysis: Person–Centered Therapy My Philosophy My beliefs about human life are intricate. We are complex individuals that are shaped not only by our genes, but also by our environments, our experiences and interactions with others. Surely, the way that people behave can be due to psychological disorders that we are not at fault for, however, I also believe that issues involving anxiety, stress and depression are often perpetuated by our own thinking processes and how we feel about ourselves in comparison to the beliefs of others. Often times, I feel that having someone to listen, validate, empathize and care for us is what it takes for change to take place. As social beings, I believe that through interactions with a person who we care about and a person that cares about us, improvements can be made. In this paper, I will discuss how my philosophy of life relates to that of person–centered therapy, as described by Sharf (2016). Human Nature, Personality, Pathology Person–centered therapy views people from a positive perspective. While therapists may not always agree with the choices that a person makes, they always try to accept a person for who they are. The belief is that people can change and become self–actualized. Person–centered therapy focuses on the belief that people's personalities are influenced by internal and external factors. These experiences will be different for everyone, because we are all exposed to different social and ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 16. Discussion on Whether Stalin Was a Necessary Evil Essay Discussion on Whether Stalin Was a Necessary Evil Marxism was a doctrine formulated by Karl Marx about the elimination of economic inequality and class conflicts. According to Marxism social and political relationships depend on economic factors because whichever group in society controls the "means of production" also has political control. Marx believed that historical change was a series of stages that were influenced by economic forces and that each stage had to be completed before the next could begin. In a classes and stateless society, co–operation will replace competition and this final and perfect stage of human history would be communism. In Russia the government was essentially feudal, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... By the end of October 1917 the Bolsheviks, led by Lenin, seized power and began to establish a communist state. Lenin introduced in March 1921 the New Economic Policy (NEP) that allowed a temporary return to capitalist polices by relaxing government controls in order to stop rebellions, improve agricultural production, encourage trade and industry and end the desperate famine. Russia moved away from the principle of centralised government control but still by 1928 production levels barely approached pre war levels. Lenin's death in 1924 began a period of debate over the direction the Revolution should take. Since Lenin gave no directions as to how the Soviet Union should move on from the NEP or how long it should last, similar to the situation crated after Stalin's death, a debate arose that ultimately became power struggle for the leadership of the Party and the Soviet Union between Joseph Stalin and Leon Trotsky. Stalin felt intellectually inferior to others and so to differentiate himself he developed the idea of "Socialism in one country", which was the antithesis of Marxism. He advocated that world revolution could only take place when the Soviet Union had strengthened its position through industrialisation because it was isolated and surrounded by "hostile" countries. Within three days in the month of August 1945 and nearing the end of World War II, Hiroshima and Nagasaki, Japan would become the testing ground and their people the test dummies for a new kind of war weapon; the atomic bomb. Was this act necessary to bring an end to World War II as has been claimed? No, it was not. But how much did that matter to those that wanted to see just what their new creation of the atom bomb could really do? In April of 1945, Kantaro Suzuki had taken over as head of the Japanese government and made it his top priority to put an end to the war. He knew when Germany surrendered, the focus of American and British forces would be turned to Japan. His people were already suffering enough and enough of his country had been destroyed before his eyes, and he wanted the devastation and anguish to end. By June of 1945, the United States had been dropping bomb after bomb on many of the cities of Japan without any real sort of retaliation from the Japanese for over six months (Atomic Bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki: Wikipedia). Why? Because by then, Japan's military forces had all but cease to exist. Cities had been reduced to ruins by the never–ending attacks. Bombs fell out of the sky like rain from storm clouds. Production of weapons, or anything, in what was left of buildings and factories that once stood was virtually impossible (Weber). It does not take a large amount of funding and private studies to see that Wal–Mart is a widely successful corporation that offers cheaper prices than their competitors. In Jack and Suzy Welch's essay they argue that we should support businesses that help individuals, communities and whole economies prosper, they claim that, "Wal–Mart helps individuals, communities, and whole economies prosper" (161), so we should support Wal–Mart. On the other hand, Paul Krugman argues that we should not support businesses that pay badly and offer minimal benefits, he claims that Wal–Mart "pays badly and offers minimal benefits" (166), therefor we should not support Wal–Mart. I believe that Krugman wrote a more persuasive essay because unlike the Welch's, he does not have a personal affiliation with Wal –Mart, however his argument is hardly persuasive because it focuses on probable scenarios that occur when a Wal–Mart is built but does not offer credible statistics to back it up. I believe that Wal–Mart's business practices do not outweigh the cost to the American Workers because it undermines their abilities when they are receiving low wages, promoting them to use social assistance programs and forcing other companies to downsize. Having an open mind can be one way in which we can help defeat this type of social judgment. Discrimination of any one on the basis of physical attributes is wrong. Unless there are slaves to do the ugly, horrible, uninteresting work, culture and contemplation become almost impossible." – OSCAR WILDE, The Soul of Man Under Socialism ! The issue of slavery has been debated for hundreds, if not thousands, of years. It is of undisputed awareness that the act of enslaving another man or women is to strip them of their civil and natural liberties. It is also of uncontested certainty that no man or women would will– ingly chose to be a slave. And although slavery and it's accompanied hardships are often seen as no less than an ultimate evil, it is also an indisputable fact that humanity has enslaved its brethren since the dawn of mankind1. As rational beings, we must put aside our presumptions, precon– ceived notions, and emotionally biased opinions of slavery and ask ourselves; why? One would think that if enslavement was such an unspeakable evil, it would have no place in our civil soci– ety. Yet, slavery time and time again has appeared as a fundamental part of many of the worlds most powerfull civilizations and societies throughout history. This is because slavery is a power– full tool and a necessary evil.
