The suffix for the Present Tense in Turkish is – yor –. For example:
O kitap okuyor. He is reading a book.
O kahve yapıyor. He is making a coffee.
O TV izliyor. He is watching a film.
This verb form is used for the Present Continuous Tense, Simple Present
Tense and Present Perfect Continuous Tense in English. For example:
O şimdi kitap okuyor. He is reading a book now.
O her zaman kitap okuyor. He always reads books.
O 2 saattir kitap okuyor. He has been reading a book for 2 hours.
Learn the verb forms below.
1) If the verb (root) ends with a vowel, the suffix is – yor. For example:
Uyumak To sleep Okumak To read
O uyu – yor. He is sleeping. O oku – yor. He is reading.
2) If the verb (root) ends with a consonant, the suffix becomes – iyor / ıyor /
üyor / uyor. For example:
İçmek To drink Yapmak To do, make
O iç – iyor. He is drinking. O yap – ıyor. He is doing / making.
3) If the verb (root) ends with – e / a, a) drop these letters b) add – iyor / ıyor
/ üyor / uyor. For example:
İzle – mek To watch
O TV izl(e) – iyor. He is watching TV.
Yaşa – mak To live
O İstanbul’da yaş(a) – ıyor. He lives in Istanbul.
Remember the vowel harmony:
