The suffix for the Past Tense in Turkish is – di / dı / dü / du –
(did, was / were). For example:
O futbol oynadı. He played football.
O sandviç yedi. He ate a sandwich.
Compare the verb tenses.
O kitap okuyor. He is reading a book.
O kitap okuyordu. He was reading a book.
O kitap okudu. He read a book.
Remember the vowel harmony:
Last Vowel Suffix Last Vowel Suffix
- a, ı - dı (tı) - e, i - di (ti)
- o, u - du /tu) - ö, ü - dü (tü)
If the last letter of the verb root is - f/s/t/k/ç/ş/h/p, the
suffix becomes – ti/tı/tü/tu –.
O kızı öptü. Çocuk sustu.
O eve gitti. O çay içti.
Yemek pişti. O bana baktı.
