This short course introduces you to the basic language skills in the Turkish language and also discusses the fundamental grammar of the Turkish language. If you are completely new to the Turkish language, add some vocabularies to your existing wordlist or you just want to refresh your memory, this is for you.
11. Sentence (Cümle) – combination of
words
Examples
Ben İngilizce öğretiyorum = I am teaching English.
Meryem kitabları okur = Mary reads the books.
Sen kediyi seviyorsun = You like cat.
12. Basic Turkish Sentence Structure
Subject + Object + Verb
•Ben İngilizce öğretiyorum
•Ben (Subject) İngilizce (Object) öğretiyorum (Verb)
•John elma yer.
John (Subject) elma (Object) yer (Verb)
13. More on Basic Turkish Sentence Structure
Turkish language has two important features.
They are:
1. Agglutination
This means they add other suffixes to the words.
E.g. Apple means elma in Turkish
Apples = elmalar
My apples = elmalarım
14. More on Basic Turkish Sentence Structure
2. Harmony
The Turkish vowels are divided into soft and hard vowels for ease of pronunciation.
Soft vowels: e, ö, ü, i
Hard vowels: a, o, u, ı
Example: In the word “elma” which means apple, “a”, a hard vowel, ends the word so when
writing apples, elmaler would be wrong but elmalar is correct. The next vowel must agree with
the most recent vowel. They must all be hard vowel.
cat = kedi
cats = kediler. Because i and e are both soft vowels.
Ler/lar = signify plurals. It acts like adding s to a word in English.
15. More on Basic Turkish Sentence Structure
2. harmony
The Turkish consonants are divided into soft and hard vowels for ease of pronunciation.
Soft consonants: b, c, d, g, ğ, j, k, l, m, n, p, r, v, y, z
Hard consonants: f, s, t, k , ç, ş, h, p
Example: In the word “sinif” which means class, “f”, a hard consonant, ends the word so when
writing “from class”, sınıfdan would be wrong but sınıftan is correct. The next consonant must
agree with the most recent consonant. They must all be hard consonants.
From school = okuldan
From office = ofistan
Ler/lar = signify plurals. It acts like adding s to a word in English.
