SPIRITUAL CARE
Your port in the storm
An Honorable Spirituality
Spirituality is really about connectedness—that is, how
we relate to our self, socially, the community, and to a
higher power or God. We want to inspire clients to be
honorable in their lives!
The challenge of embracing this concept often stems
from how we’ve treated these areas in the past and
vice versa. In a residential setting, connectedness is
vital to the treatment process. Our Professional Spiritual
Care Counselor teaches that our behaviors reflect our
spiritual character. On a daily basis, clients will address
honorable and dishonorable behaviors in small and
large group settings. At the conclusion of each week,
clients will then nominate another client who has made
significant progress removing dishonorable behaviors
and practicing honorable ones.
DISHONORABLE HONORABLE
Bitterness Discipline
Arrogance Accountability
Dangerous Servanthood
Lawlessness Humility
Self-Centeredness Safety
The process of recovery was originally understood by
AA Co-Founder Bill W. in the early 1930’s as a spiritual
experience and awakening because resentments,
guilt, and shame clouded so many addicted persons
from living connected and purposeful lives. This
understanding of connectedness and awareness
continues to inspire our philosophy of care at Harbor
Hall because the nature of addiction on human feelings,
thoughts, beliefs, and behaviors have not changed –
but neither has hope and recovery!
Residents in our program are expected to meet with
the Professional Spiritual Care Counselor regularly
as they complete Steps 1 through 5 of the 12-Step
Program and attend a weekly Spiritual lecture.
We believe that spirituality is reflected in the nature of
our feelings, thoughts, beliefs and behaviors. While our
program is not “faith-based”, our focus during treatment
is discovering who we are, inwardly, not religiously.
With our mind-body-spirit philosophy of care and a
Professional Spiritual Care Counselor, clients will receive
an additional source of attention as they process the
impact of addiction on their entire lives.
Those who commit to the treatment plan will experience
a transformative journey that will inform their personal
beliefs, values, attitudes and expectations. Their sense
of purpose and worth will come into focus, and they
will experience a new vision of what life can realistically
be like by committing to the recovery lifestyle and
network. Families and loved ones may notice an
attitude of gratitude and humility when they listen to
their loved one speak. There will be greater honesty,
open-mindedness, willingness and a new focus on a
spiritual way of life that embraces a power greater than
themselves.
“To those who made progress, it amounts to a clear
recognition of who and what we really are, followed
by a sincere attempt to become what we could be.”
—12 Steps and 12 Traditions of AA, page 58
“The Spiritual Life is not a theory.
We have to live it.” (AA, pg 83)

TRANSITIONAL LIVING
The “T” Houses
Clients who have worked hard and have
demonstrated a level of commitment to rebuilding
their life without drugs or alcohol, or both
may qualify to live in one of two separate, on-
campus houses, allowing them the opportunity
to experience recovery in an independent
environment before returning home.
Residents are required to attend weekly 12-Step
meetings, obtain a sponsor and fulfill 40 hours
each week with employment, volunteering or
attending school.
Success in a transitional living situation requires
respect and care for self, others and the living
environment.

Harbor Hall invites association with
treatment courts throughout the State.
There is a wide variety of treatment courts or problem-
solving courts in Michigan—Sobriety Courts, Drug
Courts, Adolescent Courts, Veterans Courts, Mental
Health Courts—to name a few. These courts determine
whether an individual will be processed in a treatment
court vs. that of a traditional justice system.
The intent is to keep these individuals in treatment long
enough for it to work, while under close supervision.
Treatment Court participants are:
• Provided with intensive treatment and other services
they require to get and stay clean and sober.
• Held accountable by the Drug Court judge for
meeting their obligations to the court, society,
themselves and their families.
• Regularly and randomly tested for drug use.
• Required to appear in court frequently so that the
judge may review their progress.
• Rewarded for doing well or sanctioned when they do
not live up to their obligations.
