Working towards decolonising the
library at the University of
Huddersfield
Alison Sharman and Kate McGuinn
Talk schedule
 What is Broaden My
Bookshelf?
 How did it come about?
 The first five years.
 Still spreading the word.
 Reading list toolkit.
 Human Library.
• Launched in October 2018
• Inspired by “Why is my Curriculum White?” movement
• An initiative to increase the range of books in the Library and on
reading lists written by marginalised people from a Black, Asian or
minority ethnic background and/or who identify as LGBT+
• Delivered in collaboration with the Students’ Union
• Supported by the SU’s Education Officer, Equalities Officer and
B.A.M.E. Ambassadors
What is Broaden my Bookshelf?
The first five years
The first five years
Still spreading the
word in 2023
 Renewed interest from new SU
officers and BAME Ambassadors.
 Black History Month displays.
 Book group discussions on The
Vanishing Half by Brit Bennett
and Girl Woman Other by
Bernardine Evaristo.
 Stickering of all Broaden my
Bookshelf stock.
 Short videos produced by SU
Officers.
 Human Library.
Audit of reading lists
In 2017, the SU and BAME
Ambassadors undertook a
reading list audit of sample
reading lists across all 7
Schools, looking at the gender
and ethnicity of authors.
Findings - on average, only
4.73% of the items were written
by BAME authors
Just over 80% were written by
white authors
15.26% of authors were
classified as ethnicity unknown.

What is a Human
Library?
A place where real people are
on loan to readers.
The “books” are usually from an
underrepresented or
misunderstood community and
will talk about a particular aspect
of their life or experience.
It originates from Denmark
(2000) and has been carried out
in over 80 countries including
the UK.
What is the benefit of holding such
an event?
“I found a radical way of thinking about
listening. Real listening is a willingness to
let the other person change you . When
I’m willing to let them change me,
something happens between us that’s
more interesting than a pair of duelling
monologues.”
Alan Alda, Actor and Communication
Trainer

Out of the shadows: walking a gay path through
a straight world 1970s-2020s
On being sane in insane places
Not So Terrible Palsy
'But you don't look autistic...': Living with an Adult
Diagnosis of Autism Spectrum Disorder and

The plan for the
session
There was a short break in
between the two readings.
We also did some feedback
with the readers at the end
Introduction and principles
Reading 1, 20 minutes
Reading 2, 20 minutes
Human Library Event
I found it really powerful. The honesty in the room and
the opportunity to have genuine conversations without
fear of using the wrong language that was really
powerful. In normal day to day working life, there is
sometimes the fear of saying the wrong thing. This
wiped away all these barriers and allowed genuine
discussion.
Feedback from the readers
Feedback from the books
Support was
exceptional I felt so
welcomed and support
by the team.
I think that I probably talked
‘at’ my group more than I
should have and it would
have been nice to have more
time to let people around the
table ask their own questions
I was feeling excited
as I think lived
experience needs to
be lifted throughout
the university
I’m used to talking about my
experience to an audience who
uses the same terminology in
the same field, so it was
insightful to dial that back as I
really need to work on that
more to make my story more
universal.
.It would have been nice to have
more time to spend with all of the
other books. We didn’t really get
a chance to properly meet each
other or discuss why we all
volunteered. It felt like there was
a potentially community here that
we could have built on
It felt a bit odd having such an intense
and vulnerable experience and then
just walking out alone to process it and
not knowing how my experience and
feelings compared with my fellow
books.
I loved it. It
felt powerful.
Future plans for the
Human Library at the
University
Run another Human Library
at the University’s Inclusion
Week in March: increase the
time of the readings to 30
minutes.
Finish the Human Library
Toolkit that we are working
on jointly with the University
of Hull.
Thank you for listening!

It originates from Denmark (2000) and has been carried out in over 80 countries including the UK.
  • 10. What is the benefit of holding such an event? “I found a radical way of thinking about listening. Real listening is a willingness to let the other person change you . When I’m willing to let them change me, something happens between us that’s more interesting than a pair of duelling monologues.” Alan Alda, Actor and Communication Trainer

In normal day to day working life, there is sometimes the fear of saying the wrong thing. This wiped away all these barriers and allowed genuine discussion. Feedback from the readers
  • 18. Feedback from the books Support was exceptional I felt so welcomed and support by the team. I think that I probably talked ‘at’ my group more than I should have and it would have been nice to have more time to let people around the table ask their own questions I was feeling excited as I think lived experience needs to be lifted throughout the university I’m used to talking about my experience to an audience who uses the same terminology in the same field, so it was insightful to dial that back as I really need to work on that more to make my story more universal. .It would have been nice to have more time to spend with all of the other books. We didn’t really get a chance to properly meet each other or discuss why we all volunteered. It felt like there was a potentially community here that we could have built on It felt a bit odd having such an intense and vulnerable experience and then just walking out alone to process it and not knowing how my experience and feelings compared with my fellow books. I loved it. It felt powerful.

Editor's Notes

  1. Broaden my Bookshelf came about as a response to the attainment gap and the Why is my Curriculum White? Movement. One significant thing about Broaden my Bookshelf is that it has always been run in collaboration with the SU and the success or otherwise of the campaign in any given year has been dictated partly by the officers in charge during a given year. BMB always has a higher profile in years when the SU officers have really engaged with it and driven it forward. The B.A.M.E. Ambassador Scheme was launched in 2017 by the SU President to give students from minoritized backgrounds a voice on university committees. The B.A.M.E. Ambassadors have always played a big part in the success of Broaden my Bookshelf.
  2. Promotion of the campaign has always been a big part of the work we have done on Broaden my Bookshelf and we try to have a couple of events a year to increase engagement with students and staff. Here are some pictures from the launch week events in 2018. Dr. Shola Mos Shogbamimu, who gave the launch keynote speech is a New York Attorney and a qualified Solicitor in England and Wales, she is also a political and women’s rights activist. She challenged us to be activists in everything that we do. She is an amazing speaker, very motivational and charismatic. We’ve hosted several panel debates over the years – here are images from our first one. These events have always been good opportunities for staff and students to get together and debate the issues at stake. At this panel one student asked “What can you do if you have no black lecturers? Dr. Janine Bradbury answered : Be passionate about this and keep raising the issue. Ask if your department has a budget to invite in relevant speakers. Do your own research to identify those speakers. Some of the pictures are of readings which were done by library staff the B.A.M.E. ambassadors.
  3. By 2019, even though the library had bought a lot of books, only a few of these had been added to reading lists. We decided to take the campaign out to the Schools.   This is the stand in our School of Applied Sciences with Adetayo who was our SU President at the time. The SU officers came up with questions around specific course diversity which we used to start conversations with students about representation. In 2021, we wanted an event to remind students and staff about Broaden my Bookshelf so we invited the author Johny Pitts to come and talk to us about his book Afropean at an online event. 2022 saw a revival of our panel debates with a mixture of staff and students debating the topic “Diversify or Decolonise: what is the difference and why does it matter?” To talk about decolonising as opposed to diversification for a moment, Broaden my Bookshelf has generally been seen in the university as a diversity initiative, but we are keen to change that and to move purposefully towards an agenda which is focussed on decolonisation. That will involve looking in depth at our collection to see where views which are the product of colonialism need to be highlighted and challenged and find productive ways for staff and students to do that.
  4. Initiatives this year have focussed largely on awareness raising for staff and students. The stickering of stock this year was a big task but an important one for raising the profile of Broaden my Bookshelf. Each sticker has a QR code on it which if scanned takes the student to information about Broaden my Bookshelf and the form so that they can suggest a book. The videos produced by the SU officers earlier this year are short and punchy, much more student friendly than anything we could produce ourselves. We have been using them in our social media throughout this term. Our Human Library was a staff development event at our Teaching and Learning Conference in June and Alison will be talking more about that.
  5. After launching Broaden My Bookshelf, producing a reading list toolkit, seemed to be a natural progression. As our ex SU education officer pointed out, a diverse reading list benefits ALL students not just those who are BAME. It exploses them to different narratives from across the world and challenges the nrom that a Eurocentric curriculum should b the default standard at university.
  6. McGuinn, Kate (2021) Supporting lecturers to diversify their reading lists: the Broaden my Bookshelf Reading List Toolkit. ALISS Quarterly, 16 (2). pp. 20-23. shelf Reading List Toolkit We got started on the reading list toolkit, taking much inspiration from the one developed by the University of the Arts. We launched it at the end of July 2020 and to date, the guide has had 11189 views. 11% percent of items have made it to reading list. This is very low so more work is definitely required. Mention the Collection Discovery link on Summon that links to BMB books and ebooks.
  7. In August 2022 we felt that the next stage on our Broaden My Bookshelf journey was to launch a Human Library. We’d already thought about doing something with the Students Union when the acting Dean of Human and Health Sciences got in touch and suggested we do something for two classes of students.
  8. To enable conversations that can challenge stereotypes and prejudices through dialogue. A safe space where difficult questions are expected, appreciated and answered.
  9. We recruited 7 books, here are their titles…
