Essay Analysis of the Gladiator Trailer
Analysis of the Gladiator Trailer
Trailers are important to films for a number of reasons. They promote a film and present it to the
target audience, in order to encourage them to watch the film. Trailers also give the audience
expectations of the film. The audience like to know what to expect of a film before they go and see
it. The audience is given a taste of the story and the basic plot. This is done by showing an array of
clips that are edited to a certain degree. The trailer normally ends with a 'cliff–hanger'. This is a term
used to explain when an audience is not told the ending of a story. This makes them wonder in
suspense as to what the possible endings could be, therefore drawing them ... Show more content on

I am looking at the camera shots/angles, colours, lighting, sound, plot, target audience and genre.
The film Gladiator is an epic, action, war film with some romance and a lot of history. The opens
image is of the 'universal' logo, an instantly recognisable big name. This is where the film was made.
The following image is of the 'DreamWorks' logo. This is a Steven Spielberg company with a
credible reputation. This is a distribution company. A dramatic drumbeat is heard at the start of the
opening image which tells us instantly the genre of the film, an epic war film. This is because a
heavy drumbeat is a reminiscent of battle.
The first actual shot of the trailer is of the words 'THE GENERAL' is then shown in bold whit
capital letters. I t stands out upon the black background. The words move back and eventually fade
into the background. At the beginning of this shot the music builds up, trumpets now accompany the
drums. This gives out a sense of defiance and strength. The audience associates this with war and
battle. This next shot is a mid shot of a man walking boldly with his head up high. He is walking
through lines of soldiers in big strides. He is also dressed in armour, so we assume he is the general.
The general has a stern, solemn expression he seems secure and confident. The lighting is bright but
creates the sense of an austere atmosphere and a

Historical Truth of Gladiator
In the year 2000 Universal Studios released the film "Gladiator." This film directed by Ridley Scott
is both a great and terrible depiction of the Roman Empire in its "Golden Age." Some of the tiniest
details of this time period have been observed and recreated skillfully, yet some major issues have
been completely altered or tweaked. Right from the opening scene one can view historical
inaccuracies. First, there was no last great battle against the Germanic tribes the day before Marcus
Aurelius' death. However, a great battle was fought late in the campaign in 179 C.E., yet Marcus
Aurelius did not die until the year 180 C.E.# This leads to another point of error in this film; Marcus
Aurelius was not murdered by his son Commodus. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In fact since the character Maximus did not exist in true Roman history Commodus' life came to an
end in a rather different manner. In 192 C.E. Commodus' mistress, Marcia, his Praetorian Prefect,
and his chamberlain all plotted to end his life. So, Marcia prepared for Commodus a poisoned glass
of whine, however the poison was not strong enough and Commodus was only heavily drugged and
survived. Therefore only a few days later the conspirators decided to finish the job by asking one of
Commodus' athletic friends, a wrestler named Narcissus, to strangle him in his bath on December 31
of 192. Ironically enough Commodus was to be proclaimed a Consul the following day. The
character Proximo in the movie also claims that Marcus Aurelius had banned the gladiator fights and
forced him to scratch a living in the north African Roman colony of Mirabile Dictu. While Mirabile
Dictu is an actual colony in Mauretania the fact is that Marcus Aurelius actually passed a piece of
written legislature that ensured the continuation of all gladiatorial games even through times of
economic hardship.# From here the major discrepancies end and only the minor ones begin to take
form. One of the most curious differences between the film and history is the use of language. There

A Trip to the Roman Theatre Essay
A Trip to the Roman Theatre
Morning at last! I have been waiting for this day for so long. Today is March the 15th. Today is the
day when the whole of Italy will celebrate the festival of Anna Perenna –the goddess of the year. I
love festivals, because everyone is on holiday and all the citizens are forbidden to work or do
business. I am thrilled because I am going to the theatre to see a play. I am very fortunate that my
father has paid for the actors and producers to perform the play and he has also paid for the scenery
and costumes. As well as this he has paid for all the citizens of Pompeii to come and watch the play.

with the other slaves and slave girls so that you all can get a good seat near the front I will come

"Thank you Mistress"

My mother had often told me how much fun she had when she went to the theatre. Her favourite
play writer and actor was Titus Maccius Plautus. She told me about the hilarious comedies with their
rude jokes by Titus Maccius Plautus. My mother also liked watching more serious plays. She told
me that even though they were only plays, they portrayed life very well, and were very realistic. She
told me about one particular play she watched, this was a serious play and at the end of it the main
character in the play was murdered by his friend. My mother told me that a man from the audience

The General, The Slave Who Became A Gladiator
The first movie that pops up to someone's mind when we say Drama is "Gladiator" released in the
year 2000 which is considered historical drama. Ridley Scott works on an inspiring, mesmerizing
and action packed flick to trigger the human feelings of strength, honor, courage, betrayal,
ruthlessness and survival. The character that Russell Crowe plays as the gladiator sends the audience
back home motivated to fight for what they believe in following what he mentioned in the movie
"what we do in life, echoes in eternity". The supporting character in the movie, in specific is the
slave that accompanies the gladiator the whole time reflects the slogan of the movie "The General
who became a Slave, the Slave who became a Gladiator".
The Cinematic Style that Ridley Scott develops in the film is dynamic, bravely reflected and acted
genuinely. Yet while discussing the plot we can consider it thrilling but flat. Just when the plot is
heating up the steam is gone. Plus the movement of the sword fights looks like they are on fast
forward.
Scott chose New York and Washington as a geographical area to film. The heroic architecture setting
reflect the geographical area that is portrayed "The heroic mode is triumphant and absolute; it
reflects realism in both plot and performance" Day, G ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In my opinion, this is the core of the movie where Scott just tosses it away and the tension drain out
onto the floor, where there is still one hour for the movie to end. The movie is condensing of plot
fragments from the two Roman films from Hollywood "Ben–Hur" (1959) and "Spartacus" (1960). If
we want to speak of it simply, it is about a betrayed lord seeking revenge, and a gladiator revolt. The
major problem is that Maximus can't be both a gladiator and a player in imperial politics because
this splits the focus. The plot is interesting yet uncomplicated at the same

The Gladiator VS. History Essay
I'm sure that many people have seen the movie the, "Gladiator" and thought that most if not all of it
was true. Sadly this movie paints a picture that falls short of fact and leans more towards fiction.
Winning 5 academy awards it is a hit with the audience but with historians a bust. This is mainly due
to the inconsistencies revolving around character portrayals, events, and even characters that don't
exist. I'm sure that this is because the truth wouldn't fair as well as the movie did. Moreover the,"
Gladiator" which is a winner of many academy awards does not win much in the depiction of
characters and events. Gladiator begins in 180 A.D in the winter time on a battlefield in Germania.
The first error is around the character Caesar ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Another mistake within this movie was showing Marcus Aurelis as only having 2 children, Lucilla
and Commodus, but Marcus Aurelius actually had 13 children (Gill N.S.). Leaving off with the
opening of this movie the biggest historical mistake overall revolves around the leading character
and hero of this movie, Maximus. This is because he is entirely made up, he did not exist. So every
event or action that involves him is false. Lucilla and he never had relations when they were
younger, he didn't kill anyone, and he was not supposed to be the protector of Rome like they
showed Marcus Aurelis wanting. Although Maximus may be a compilation of people who were real.
For instance the man who did command the battle in the opening scene which most likely occured in
179 was Taruttiens Paternus. Also how he longed to be home and his family are from Claudius
Pompeianus who was a military officer whose career resembled Maximus's (Ward). A short while
after the opening scene we are transported to North African Zucchabar where yet more inaccuracies
occur. The first being the misconception from the movie that Gladiator games had been banned by
Maximus Aurelis. This is stated by the character Proximo who purchased Maximus to be one of his
gladiators. He described how he was forced to make a living due to the games being banned. Also
the Coliseum is supposed to have been reopened by Commodus to host games to honor his father.

Gladiator Movie. vs History
During the Roman Empire many emperors ruled in their own ways. Some were considered to be one
of the "Five Good Emperors, " and the others didn't last because they were assassinated. They either
just cared about themselves or actually cared about the citizens of Rome. The movie Gladiator
portrays Roman life and the gladiatorial games. Really though, how does the movie compare to the
history of the Roman Empire? I am really interested in the actual history of the gladiators and the
movie is one of my favorites. That's why I chose to do my review on it and I came to find out that
the movie didn't give me the information on the real life and times of the gladiators. In the movie,

They had to inspect the men just by looking at their bodies and making sure they were strong and
healthy enough to purchase. "I did not pay good money for you, for your company. I paid it so I
could profit from your death," he said. These quotes show that no one cared about the gladiators
because they were slaves. All they cared about was that they put on a good show. Gladiator didn't
show much of the training that the men received. Most of it was them in battle, but not what went on
behind the scenes and all the vigorous training they had to go through. Watching the behind the
scenes was interesting because throughout the whole thing I thought to myself, 'wow this is crazy
how much work it took for all these men to become gladiators for the film.' No wonder they were all
buff, because they did hours and hours of training everyday. In Roman times, gladiators had to
endure lengthy and demanding training so that they could be prepared for what lay before them. In
the movie, Maximus was Rome's greatest general so they just assumed he was the best around and
didn't need any training. One thing I noticed that wasn't historically accurate was the chants of the
spectators at the arena. When a gladiator was wounded the audience was able to whether or not they
want him to be killed or spared. The way the audience would decide would be either to wave their
thumbs around, if they want him to be spared, or they would press their thumb against their opposite
hand,

Gladiator, by Ridley Scott
Who doesn't love a movie where the protagonist is off on a quest for revenge in numerous action
sequences for his taste of sweet, sweet revenge? When breaking films into this type of category, one
film that stands out among the rest has to be Gladiator. Gladiator can be argued as one of the
greatest action movies of all time, and for good reasons. The soundtrack, dialogue, and characters
have no equal in the revenge action category of film, and can be considered tops of pure action
films. Gladiator is a perfectly well rounded movie that adds the best of all worlds to create the
masterpiece seen today. Ridley Scott's masterpiece, Gladiator, was released to the public in 2000.

The soundtrack has received critical acclaim from numerous reviews and was a best seller, selling
millions of copies of the soundtrack alone to anxious listeners. The songs helped set the pace of the
movie and made a good movie into an excellent movie. Some of the favorite songs from the
soundtrack include "The Battle," "Elysium," and the favorite "Now We Are Free." Mixing a
combination of soft melodies and ballads, with battle waltzes, the soundtrack covered all ground and
provides future composers the groundwork for future war epics. While Hans Zimmer gets most of
the credit and praise for Gladiator's score, he could not do it alone without Lisa Gerrard, who co–
composed the score and provided the vocals. This soundtrack was so well received that it was
nominated for an Academy Award and a BAFTAAward for best score, and won a Golden Globe for
best original score. Compared to other action films, Gladiator is hard to top. As a reviewer of the
soundtrack, Roko Zaper, said Gladiator, "By the very nature of the film itself, the score to Gladiator
is perhaps hard to grasp for some, but in it Zimmer and Gerrard have created a score that
transgresses its genre and brings the music into an unforgettable arena, an Elysium of drama if you
will." As Zaper said, Gladiator separates and goes past any other action soundtrack. Gladiator's

Editing, Cinematography, and Sound in Gladiator
The film that I have chosen to analyse is Gladiator. I have chosen to analyse the scene where the
gladiators are battling in the Middle East. The scene contains many features and editing techniques
which make the fight sequence exciting and thrilling. The scene begins with a medium high angle
shot of a goat with blood dripping down its body. This shot frames the body of the goat and gives it
a sense of vulnerability. The shot creates meaning to the viewer who can predict that the scene might
contain violence or bloodshed of some sort. The camera then zooms outward into an establishing
shot to give the viewer an idea of the setting. The mise en ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

The lighting is very low key and most of the light filters from the roof, overhead. The overhead
lighting dominates the gladiatorÂ's faces and brings out their facial features. This effect shows the
faces of the gladiatorÂ's and their anticipation of the battle which is about to commence. Non
diegetic orchestral music starts to begin once more building the tension. The camera then cuts into a
close up of every gladiator whilst moving slowly to the side where it stops and gives us a side view
shot of the gladiatorÂ's showing in detail their facial expressions. This is where the dialogue of the
main character begins and the camera moves slowly to a medium low angle shot, thus giving the
character a sense of authority. The character speaks slowly and when he accentuates an important
point the camera moves to a close up of the main character of the film (Russell Crowe), showing the
viewer his feelings and his anticipation. In the background there is the external diegetic sound of the
crowd chanting, kill, kill, kill. This along with the orchestral music sounds like a heart beat as there
is a short pause between every chant. Again the heart beat sound reiterates the anticipation of the
gladiators; this is effective as it makes the scene more exciting and exhilarating to watch. The mimic
of the heart beat and chanting are

The Roman Colosseum : Architectural Designs And Architecture
The Romans were no fools when it came to their architectural designs and engineering. One of their
biggest designs and infrastructure in their time was the Roman Colosseum. The Colosseum's
appearance and well thought design is one that has impacted our world today. It took the Romans
many years to build with a lot of knowledge, strength and belief from its people. Once this
masterpiece was completed, the Roman Colosseum hosted thousands of games and gladiator battles,
which influenced the people of their time and the modern world. The Colosseum, also known as the
Amphitheater of the Flavians, was the first permanent amphitheater to be built in Rome. Unlike
many other amphitheaters, the Colosseum was placed directly in the city center. Built out of
concrete, this material allowed for them to build more quickly and efficiently. The amphitheater was
so massive, it covered about six acres. Roman architects designed this building using many different
type of column styles from the ancient Greeks. Each level of the Colosseum reflected a different
style, the first floor showed the Doric style, the second floor showed Ionic and on the third showed
Corinthian, all columns reflecting beauty and artistry. The construction of the arches was one that
the architects were trying to express size and proportion, they reached over fifteen stories. There
were eighty, very large arches at ground level, that is where spectators were to enter the Colosseum.

Essay about Gladiator
Gladiator Directed by Ridley Scott, Gladiator is an epic tale of honor, love, loyalty and power.
If you could only see two movies a year make Gladiator one of them. It is full of action, adventure,
drama, deceit and love.
Russell Crowe plays the Roman General, Maximus, who heads the Roman Army in their conquers
of Europe and Africa under the emperor Marcus Aurelius. Maximus has served Rome for " two
years, 264 days and this morning," and is anxiously awaiting his release by the emperor so that he

Only Maximus can give Rome back it's freedom and let the Senate rule.
When Aurelius reveals his announcement to the anxious Commodus, he suffocates his father to gain
what he thinks is rightfully his, the power of emperor.
Commodus is a weak, young man. He is so frightened of Maximus that he orders the execution of
Maximus and his family. Maximus is able to escape execution but could not save his family in time.
The most heart wrenching scene of the movie is Maximus finding his wife and (more) child
brutalized, burned and hanging on the family front porch. Maximus weeps for his family but also for
his own death. The thought of seeing his family is the only thing that has kept him alive. You can
feel the love he feels for them. Crowe makes you believe the pain and heartache that Maximus is
feeling. You ache for his loss and want revenge against Commodus.
Maximus becomes enslaved in a foreign land and is forced to fight for his life as a gladiator.
Maximus' fame as a gladiator grew within Rome as his skill at combat became apparent. Commodus
fears that Maximus will turn the Roman people against him and return rule of Rome to the Senate.
Maximus is a hero for the people and Commodus is a snake. This movie is believable. The acting by
Crowe and Phoenix makes you believe the stories and the use of digital imagery recreates ancient
Rome down to the last intricate detail.
Even if you go just for the special effects you won't be disappointed.

Gladiator Argumentative Essay
When most people hear the word gladiator, images of blood, gore, and undisciplined brutality may
enter their minds. One could see how ancient gladiators have received such biased and negative
reputation through the many modern movies, television shows, and comics that have depicted them
in such a way. Contrary to the modern idea of gladiators, they were actually a well–organized and
controlled sporting event. While some gladiators did kill, the majority did not receive permission to
end the life of their opponents. To really understand the gladiator, one must first understand how
they lived. The ranks of gladiatorial service were primarily made up of slaves, so the killing of the
gladiators would in turn, affect the profits that could have ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

The two referees, like in sporting events today, enforced the rules of the games. The Gladiatorial
games were not driven by blood, as much as they were from good showing for the people of Rome.
To achieve maximum crowd pleasure, a plethora of weapons and defensive styles were used in the
arena. Ballet states that: "the objective was therefore to avoid killing ones opponent, but to put on a
good show." (Ballet, Bazin, Vranceanu, 201). Striking an opponent to the death during combat was
highly discouraged. The majority of deaths occurred later because of injuries occurred during the
contest. Occasionally, because a gladiator did not fight valiantly, the crowd can call for his death.
The Editore would be in charge of deciding whether the gladiator had earned the right to fight
another day or if he had met his end. In Paul Marks article, "Gladiators Fought It Out By The
Books," he states that forensic scientist had discovered that sometimes: "gladiators whom the crowd
condemned to death were often still alive when dragged from the arena, and were in fact dispatched
by a final hammer blow to the head" (Marks). So although gladiators were not usually fighting to
the death, there was always the chance of dying, and therefore had to be prepared to die at any
occasion

The Roles Of Gladiators In The Movie Pompeii
The movie Pompeii portrays two slaves fighting as gladiators in ancient Rome and the eruption of a
nearby volcano. Gladiators were people who were armed with a weapon to in a public area against
another person or a wild animal, for the entertainment of the audience (dictionary.com). There,
gladiator fights occurred often in arenas. One of the most famous was the Colosseum. Half of the
time, gladiators were actually slaves (Wood). Though they seldom died, other spinoffs of their
battles would transpire. For instance, sea battles and fights fought with wild animals would take
their place (Wood). These types generally resulted in more than one death. Ancient Romans enjoyed
watching them clash their swords together and, if they paid extra, battle until death (Bancroft–Hunt).
People who needed to pay off debts, were ex–soldiers, prisoners of wars, volunteers (in place of
military service), or slaves became gladiators (Wood). One derivative of the fights were them being

three to five times per year, schools were rough nonetheless. "Novicius", new gladiators, were

they enjoyed the excitement, the fame and the crowds cheering their name. Also being a gladiator

Volunteer gladiators had to swear an oath and enter a legal agreement agreeing to be punished by
beating burning death by sword if they didn't perform as required. But being a gladiator was like
being today's no.1 music artist; if you were good people loved you.
If you were heroic and brave and the emperor liked you he might have even given you the wooden
swords to signify your freedom.
The Best Gladiator
To be the best gladiator you had to be tough yet agile you would have to be able to win without
being to cocky. You would need to be able to use all weapons. Gladiators were trained to be fearless
and strong in battle they had to be able to go into every battle not caring if they died.
The best gladiators were the bravest always fighting for themselves the ones with the flawless
technique and the ones who made sure winning came first before anything.
End of the Gladiators
The Gladiator games of ancient Rome began their decline through the influence of Roman Emperor
Constantine I.
Constantine was the first Roman Emperor to freely allow Christianity. Christians were no longer
persecuted for their beliefs and martyred when there were gladiator events.
Constantine I made this law, which stated:
"In times in which peace and peace relating to domestic affairs prevail, bloody demonstrations
displease us. Therefore we order that there may be no more gladiator combats. Those, who were

Ridley Scott's Use of Mise-en-Scene to Convey Atmosphere...
"There was a dream that was Rome. You could only whisper it. Anything more than a whisper and it
would vanish, it was so fragile."
The film 'Gladiator' was released in 2000. A thrilling action film, it was a huge success, scooping
five Oscars and earning over $427 million dollars. Sir Ridley Scott– who directed the film–already
had many great films to his name, such as 'Alien', 'Blade Runner' and 'American Gangster', so it was
no surprise when this film became one of the highest earners of the year 2000. The mise–en–scene
used throughout was, perhaps, behind the genius that made this film as much of a success today as it
was nine years ago.

There is a close up of his face, which allows the viewer to see every emotion, which adds an essence
of vulnerability to a character that is more often than not, perceived as the complete opposite. It is
also used to emphasise the fact that Maximus is the character the film will be based around.
Following the close up, there is a shot of a robin sitting on the branch of a tree, after a short while it
flies away, perhaps sensing danger. The shot is then back to Maximus, who is smiling sadly,
possibly at the thought of the robin being able to fly away from it all, when he can't. The way that
mise–en–scene has been used to depict a slight fear in the character of Maximus, adds contrast to his
personality, which in turn adds depth, leaving the audience feeling able to connect to him. The music
in this scene makes it almost haunting as it creates a calm yet uneasy atmosphere. Maximus is
wearing gold in this which, not only continues the theme of gold, but also represents his authority.
The combination of this strong, powerful figure being slightly fearful at what lies ahead, adds to the
uneasy atmosphere. The lighting in the sequence is also a lot darker than the previous which adds to
the implication that the atmosphere is about to change, this along with the non–diegetic sounds like
the wind blowing and the distant sound of birds, help create a really dramatic, prominent sequence

The Colosseum's technical name is the Flavian Amphitheater, so called in praise of the emperor who
oversaw its creation. The Colosseum was begun in the year AD 72 and was still uncompleted at the
time of Vespasian's death in 79. He was succeeded by his elder son, Titus, who undertook the
completion of the Flavian Amphitheater. It was officially opened in AD 80 for the inaugural games.
Although the original name of this dynamic building was the Flavian Amphitheater, several
centuries after being built it was referred to as the Colosseum, a lasting title. The building received
this nickname from a statue that stood near the site of the arena. According to Pearson, the statue
originally was of Nero, but Vespasian changed the head of the statue to the sun god, Apollo. And it
was this colossus, with Apollo's head, that gave the arena its infamous name, the Colosseum.
The Colosseum was built in a valley found between the Esquiline, the Palatine, and the Caelian
hills. The spot chosen, where Nero's lake used to be, was interesting and made a bold statement.
Where Nero had built for his own pleasure, the Flavians built a massive structure for the public
good.
The Colosseum was the largest amphitheater of the time period. It was a huge elliptical structure
consisting of four stories, over 150 feet high. It measured 620 X 513 feet. The enclosed oval arena
measure 287 feet long X 180 feet wide.

The Animal Use Of Animals In The Colosseum
I don't think that animals shouldn't have been used in the colosseum for gladiator fights. Some might
believe that animals were used to make the fights more entertaining. But I believe that it was very
unkind to the animals and inhumane. This is misguided because they could have use something else
to entertain themselves like plays or something other than killing thousands of animals and humans.
Many animals went extinct in the colosseum. The animals killed a lot of people at the colosseum.
They(people in the colosseum and the townspeople) would kill a lot of animals. The definition of a
gladiator is a person who was a professional fighter, and fought in front of people in the colosseum
in the Roman Empire. Some things about the colosseum are it was started to be built in 70 A.D and
finished 10 years later. The height of the colosseum was 157ft and the perimeter was 1788 ft. There
were 4 floors and it could hold 50,000 people. The arena was 180 ft wide and 287 ft long. One other
thing about the colosseum is over 1 million animals died there. The first reason that i don't think
animals shouldn't have been used in the colosseum is because many animals went extinct in the
colosseum. The first example is elephants, lions, and tigers from Africa and Asia were hunted until
extinct by the townspeople. I'm wondering why the townspeople liked to kill and make some
extinct? The second example is that sometimes whole species like European Wild horses, the Great

This was done in grades of gladiator training called Palus'. The highest attainable grade for a

The paradox of gladiators continues within the school because they live in prison like conditions and

Gladiator And The Historical Accuracy Of The Film Gladiator

The movie gladiator from the year 2000 is no different. The movie gladiator is a movie with

Argumentative Essay On Gladiator Games
A gladiator sits in the dungeon sweating, for his turn is soon to come. He hears the howls of men
and beasts, the thud of corpses dropping to the floor, and the crowd applauding. Finally, he hears the
tapping of the guard's approaching feet down the corridor, and his life begins to flash before his
eyes. He is forcefully escorted upstairs and steps out of the gate that closes behind him. Crowds are
cheering all around him, chanting for his death. Growling comes from the other gate, and a lion
emerges from the shadows, charging at him. Within a few seconds, the jaw had clasped around his
neck. Blood was splattered on the floor and the crowd celebrated the demise of the prisoner. This is
the cruel practice of gladiator matches, in which those in power force men and beasts below them to
clash with each other for sport. I, Emperor Honorius, have decided to bring the abolition of this
practice. No more will organize gladiator matches, or they will feel the wrath of the gods and I.
The gladiator games are the sport of death and gore. Many have met their end in the arena, yet this
practice continued. At this point, the blood of all the fallen from the arena could fill the Colosseum.
We have even staged battles between entire armies, though the deaths of those men are real. Why do
we host these games? Greedy politicians and generals use them to demonstrate their power and
improve their social standing. They send those below them to their deaths for a better chance of
election. The

place during the reign of the Holy Roman Empire in the year 180 A.D. The Emperor, Marcus

Maximus Meridius. The Emperor's son Commodus betrays Maximus, kills his father, and takes

The biggest moment in which Commodus shows his lust for power is at the beginning of the movie.
His father Marcus Aurelius, who is also the Emperor, decides that the Roman General Maximus
Meridius, who is very close to Marcus, is to take over the Roman Empire as Ceasar once he
dies(Movie). He does not believe Commodus is fit to rule. Marcus tells his son this news and
Commodus is so heart broken by Marcus' decision that he suffocates his own father in order to take
over the empire(Movie). Commodus also shows pride in himself multiple times throughout the film.
Towards the beginning of the film Commodus constantly boasts to the Senate and Maximus about
how will take over the Empire once his father dies(Movie). Commodus also asks Maximus if he is
willing to stay and continue leading the Roman Army when he becomes Ceasar. Later on in the
movie after Commodus has become Ceasar, he is always showing how he is royalty(Movie). He
takes pride in the way he dresses with fine white royal robes, the crown, fancy armor, and capes. He
loves that he lives in a marble palace with servants and guards to fetch his every need, and has the
finest decorations and tableware(Movie).
The next trait a tragic hero must have is peripeteia. Peripeteia is a Greek term that translates as a

The issue of the film affects the film negatively because throughout many parts of the film it is sad,

The Rise of Gladiatorial Combat in Rome
The Rise of Gladiatorial Combat in Rome
Gladiatorial contests (munera gladitoria), hold a central place in our perception of Roman behavior.
They were also a big influence on how Romans themselves ordered their lives. Attending the games
was one of the practices that went with being a Roman. The Etruscans who introduced this type of
contest in the sixth century BC, are credited with its development but its the
Romans who made it famous. A surviving feature of the Roman games was when a gladiator fell he
was hauled out of the arena by a slave dressed as the Etruscan death–demon Charun. The slave
would carry a hammer which was the demon 's attribute. Moreover, the Latin term for a trainer–

At other times they were thrown to the wild beasts. Criminals that were used had committed crimes
that carried a death sentence or harsh manual labor. The crimes which led to the arena were murder,
treason, robbery and arson.
Criminals sentenced to forced labor were often obliged to serve as gladiators, and were sentenced to
three years of combat and two years in the schools.
Sometimes penalties were differentiated according to social class, thus for certain crimes which in
the case of slaves would involve execution, free men or freedmen (ex–slaves) were condemned to
fight in the arena instead. This did not of course make them gladiators, unless they were trained first,
as those required to provide this sort of sport not always were. And indeed as gladiators became
more expensive in the second century AD the use of untrained criminals in the amphitheater
increased.(7:537) Most gladiators, at Rome and elsewhere were slaves, but in addition there were
always some free men who became gladiators because they wanted to. The profession was an
alternative to being a social outcast. They were generally derived from the lowest ranking category
of free persons, namely the freedman who had themselves been slaves or were the son of slaves.
Free fighters were more sought after than slaves, presumably because they shower greater
enthusiasm in the arena. Such a volunteer was offered a

the citizens of Rome some entertainment. The Romans had many choices of what to do during their
spare time, such as ball games, board games, and watching gladiatorial fights in the Colosseum; this
was the most popular type of entertainment. To many people today, Roman entertainment was
classed as cruel. However, not all forms of entertainment involved such violence as within the

This is why Vespasian knocked down Nero's "Golden House" and the Colossus of Nero (an
enormous bronze statue of himself) and exchanged the gold for money to build the Colosseum. He
used half of the land where Nero's house was, to create a public park for the people of Rome to use
and enjoy. He also built the Colosseum where the statue was, it was named after the Colossus,
meaning gold. The Colosseum was a large centre for entertainment. It was made out of marble and
limestone and it took ten years to build as it was the largest building of its kind. It was the first free–
standing amphitheatre to be built without using natural hillsides to create seating. Vespasian made
sure it could seat 50,000 people, so the majority of citizens could come and get entertained. There
were 76 entrances in various places around the Colosseum which enabled everyone easy access in
and out; the entire audience could exit the building in five minutes in the case of an emergency.
The Colosseum could accommodate all classes of people wishing to visit the Colosseum. Entrance
to the Colosseum was free, but each person had to have a special piece of paper similar to a ticket
which had their seat number, tier number and sector number, like we do now in modern times. This

The Gladiator Trailer Essay
In the summer of 2000 a box office hit was released. "Gladiator" was a brilliant action film set in

Some examples are white sand on the coliseum floor, gold and brown coliseum walls, and red rose
petals falling around Maximus. Without this use of colour change the audience would find it more
difficult to tell that the hero experienced a radical journey from a general to a slave to a gladiator,
then a hero. As the trailer begins, slow images combined with Written Words are used to give the
target audience time to familiarise themselves with the story of Maximus. For example the first few
shots are of Russell Crowe as a general, then a slave, then a gladiator. This makes it clear to the
audience who the main character is and helps to set the scene. Then the images start to become
faster and more exciting. This is achieved by using rapid cuts which increases the viewer's
excitement. For example the viewer now sees images of sword fights, fierce tigers and overturned
chariots. A shot of a chariot overturning and the image of a horse jumping through flames have also
been included, but slowed down because they are exciting stunts and the director doesn't want the
audience to miss them. Also by encapsulating a shot of Commodus screaming at his sister the
audience can tell that the film will be dramatic. By making the scenes faster and more violent, the
director has gripped the audience so they will go and see the film. Another important element of the
trailer is the sound. Throughout the trailer tense, exciting music is played to draw the

Commodus decides the best way to ensure he rises and Maximus falls with the people is to battle
him in the gladiator arena. Commodus, knowing that Maximus is a more skilled fighter comes up
with a plan to give himself the advantage. He enters the chamber where Maximus is imprisoned, he
tells him of the upcoming battle arranged between the two and his plan to humiliate and kill
Maximus so that he will be liked by the people instead. Commodus tries to portray himself as
unafraid of Maximus, but he can see through his exterior to the insecure man he has always been.
Maximus responds to Commodus saying, "I think you've been afraid you're whole life." Commodus
carries through with his plan and stabs Maximus in his side and conceals the wound. It may seem
like a minuscule quote from the movie, but it proves the deceitful traits displayed by an evil being.
Evil, in any form, stops at nothing to take what it wants. While a true hero, encompassed with purity,
would never harm an innocent being for such selfish

Film Review Of The Movie Gladiator

History 101 Western Civ. Through 1689

Gladiator (2000) by Scott Ridley In most historical movies directors often take an artistic approach
to films. Gladiator was one of those movies and this understandable. Movies must be exciting to get
people to come and watch the movie so can there can profit. Gladiator made new characters and
changed personality of others. In the beginning of the movie the Romans are in battle with
Germania. With General Maximus Decimus Meridius as Rome's leading force they quickly wipe out
the enemy. After the battle Emperor Marcus Aurelius calls Maximus to speak to him in private.
Emperor Marcus tells Maximus that his son, Commodus, is unfit to rule and will appoint Maximus
as regent to help save Rome from corruption. Soon later Commodus is told this by his father,
Emperor Marcus, and in a murderous fit Commodus kills him. Commodus lies to his sister and
Maximus saying the former Emperor past away in his sleep and that he, Commodus would be the
new Emperor. Maximus is asked by the Commodus to swear his loyalty to him and when Maximus
refuses he is arrested and sentenced to be executed. The hero kills his captors and escapes to his
home only to find it and his family killed and burned to the ground. Maximus buries his family and
passes out from fatigue and grief. He is later found by slave traders and sold to Proximo, a gladiator
trainer. Maximus shows his abilities as a killer but Proximo tells him that a

Liberal Humanistic Critique of Gladiator Essay
Ridley Scott's epic film, Gladiator, won five Academy Awards, including Best Picture in 2000.
Scott's film, details the fall and rise of the great Roman General, Maximus Decimus Meridius. The
Roman Emperor, Marcus Aurelius, tells Maximus that he wishes that he become his successor,
instead of his son, Commodus. Angry, Commodus, murders his own father, thus becoming the
emperor, and sentences Maximus and his family to death. He escapes, but the Emperor's men
murder his family and burn his home. Slave traders, then capture him, and sell him into slavery.
Maximus swears revenge, and must fight for his murdered family, and destroyed life. A liberal
humanistic critique reveals that the film has a self contained meaning, shows the ... Show more

His fall and rise, shows exactly what he believes, and reveals his quest for freedom. Throughout the
film, Maximus wants nothing but revenge for his family and his eventual freedom. The film contians
this theme within the scenes themselves, making background information unneeded.
Scott's film presents the overall purpose of he enhancement of life. Maximus, plays the role of the
hero, who rises, and takes his revenge. Although Maximus kills many people, he does so
righteously, trying desperately to avenge his murdered family, and gain his freedom again. Not once
does maximus kill innocent people, or take the lives of those who did him no wrong. He only wants
vengeance, on those who betrayed and wronged him; those who made him a slave, and murdered his
family. At one point, Maximus screams to the crowd, "are you not entertained," mocking their vile
cheering, and death chants. The people however do not take notice of his mocking tone, only
cheering louder. Maximus never betrays his fellow soldiers, or harms innocent people. He only kills
the people who block him from his freedom and revenge. Maximus' bravery and valor, give his men
the courage to fight and die, protecting their beliefs and freedoms. Maximus' bravery also gives the
Roman people courage, allowing them to oppose the corrupt Emperor, Commodus. When Maximus
reveals himself, and swears his revenge, the roman people who honor and respect him, are struck
with courage.

Essay Analysis Of The Gladiator Trailer

  • 1. Essay Analysis of the Gladiator Trailer Analysis of the Gladiator Trailer Trailers are important to films for a number of reasons. They promote a film and present it to the target audience, in order to encourage them to watch the film. Trailers also give the audience expectations of the film. The audience like to know what to expect of a film before they go and see it. The audience is given a taste of the story and the basic plot. This is done by showing an array of clips that are edited to a certain degree. The trailer normally ends with a 'cliff–hanger'. This is a term used to explain when an audience is not told the ending of a story. This makes them wonder in suspense as to what the possible endings could be, therefore drawing them ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... I am looking at the camera shots/angles, colours, lighting, sound, plot, target audience and genre. The film Gladiator is an epic, action, war film with some romance and a lot of history. The opens image is of the 'universal' logo, an instantly recognisable big name. This is where the film was made. The following image is of the 'DreamWorks' logo. This is a Steven Spielberg company with a credible reputation. This is a distribution company. A dramatic drumbeat is heard at the start of the opening image which tells us instantly the genre of the film, an epic war film. This is because a heavy drumbeat is a reminiscent of battle. The first actual shot of the trailer is of the words 'THE GENERAL' is then shown in bold whit capital letters. I t stands out upon the black background. The words move back and eventually fade into the background. At the beginning of this shot the music builds up, trumpets now accompany the drums. This gives out a sense of defiance and strength. The audience associates this with war and battle. This next shot is a mid shot of a man walking boldly with his head up high. He is walking through lines of soldiers in big strides. He is also dressed in armour, so we assume he is the general. The general has a stern, solemn expression he seems secure and confident. The lighting is bright but creates the sense of an austere atmosphere and a ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 3. Historical Truth of Gladiator In the year 2000 Universal Studios released the film "Gladiator." This film directed by Ridley Scott is both a great and terrible depiction of the Roman Empire in its "Golden Age." Some of the tiniest details of this time period have been observed and recreated skillfully, yet some major issues have been completely altered or tweaked. Right from the opening scene one can view historical inaccuracies. First, there was no last great battle against the Germanic tribes the day before Marcus Aurelius' death. However, a great battle was fought late in the campaign in 179 C.E., yet Marcus Aurelius did not die until the year 180 C.E.# This leads to another point of error in this film; Marcus Aurelius was not murdered by his son Commodus. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In fact since the character Maximus did not exist in true Roman history Commodus' life came to an end in a rather different manner. In 192 C.E. Commodus' mistress, Marcia, his Praetorian Prefect, and his chamberlain all plotted to end his life. So, Marcia prepared for Commodus a poisoned glass of whine, however the poison was not strong enough and Commodus was only heavily drugged and survived. Therefore only a few days later the conspirators decided to finish the job by asking one of Commodus' athletic friends, a wrestler named Narcissus, to strangle him in his bath on December 31 of 192. Ironically enough Commodus was to be proclaimed a Consul the following day. The character Proximo in the movie also claims that Marcus Aurelius had banned the gladiator fights and forced him to scratch a living in the north African Roman colony of Mirabile Dictu. While Mirabile Dictu is an actual colony in Mauretania the fact is that Marcus Aurelius actually passed a piece of written legislature that ensured the continuation of all gladiatorial games even through times of economic hardship.# From here the major discrepancies end and only the minor ones begin to take form. One of the most curious differences between the film and history is the use of language. There ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 5. A Trip to the Roman Theatre Essay A Trip to the Roman Theatre Morning at last! I have been waiting for this day for so long. Today is March the 15th. Today is the day when the whole of Italy will celebrate the festival of Anna Perenna –the goddess of the year. I love festivals, because everyone is on holiday and all the citizens are forbidden to work or do business. I am thrilled because I am going to the theatre to see a play. I am very fortunate that my father has paid for the actors and producers to perform the play and he has also paid for the scenery and costumes. As well as this he has paid for all the citizens of Pompeii to come and watch the play. My father has given my mother and me a special token, which entitles us to ... Her favourite play writer and actor was Titus Maccius Plautus. She told me about the hilarious comedies with their rude jokes by Titus Maccius Plautus. My mother also liked watching more serious plays. She told me that even though they were only plays, they portrayed life very well, and were very realistic. She told me about one particular play she watched, this was a serious play and at the end of it the main character in the play was murdered by his friend. • 7. The General, The Slave Who Became A Gladiator The first movie that pops up to someone's mind when we say Drama is "Gladiator" released in the year 2000 which is considered historical drama. Ridley Scott works on an inspiring, mesmerizing and action packed flick to trigger the human feelings of strength, honor, courage, betrayal, ruthlessness and survival. The character that Russell Crowe plays as the gladiator sends the audience back home motivated to fight for what they believe in following what he mentioned in the movie "what we do in life, echoes in eternity". The supporting character in the movie, in specific is the slave that accompanies the gladiator the whole time reflects the slogan of the movie "The General who became a Slave, the Slave who became a Gladiator". The Cinematic Style that Ridley Scott develops in the film is dynamic, bravely reflected and acted genuinely. Yet while discussing the plot we can consider it thrilling but flat. Just when the plot is heating up the steam is gone. Plus the movement of the sword fights looks like they are on fast forward. Scott chose New York and Washington as a geographical area to film. The heroic architecture setting reflect the geographical area that is portrayed "The heroic mode is triumphant and absolute; it reflects realism in both plot and performance" Day, G ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In my opinion, this is the core of the movie where Scott just tosses it away and the tension drain out onto the floor, where there is still one hour for the movie to end. The movie is condensing of plot fragments from the two Roman films from Hollywood "Ben–Hur" (1959) and "Spartacus" (1960). If we want to speak of it simply, it is about a betrayed lord seeking revenge, and a gladiator revolt. The major problem is that Maximus can't be both a gladiator and a player in imperial politics because this splits the focus. The plot is interesting yet uncomplicated at the same ... • 9. The Gladiator VS. History Essay I'm sure that many people have seen the movie the, "Gladiator" and thought that most if not all of it was true. Sadly this movie paints a picture that falls short of fact and leans more towards fiction. Winning 5 academy awards it is a hit with the audience but with historians a bust. This is mainly due to the inconsistencies revolving around character portrayals, events, and even characters that don't exist. I'm sure that this is because the truth wouldn't fair as well as the movie did. Moreover the," Gladiator" which is a winner of many academy awards does not win much in the depiction of characters and events. Gladiator begins in 180 A.D in the winter time on a battlefield in Germania. The first error is around the character Caesar ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Another mistake within this movie was showing Marcus Aurelis as only having 2 children, Lucilla and Commodus, but Marcus Aurelius actually had 13 children (Gill N.S.). Leaving off with the opening of this movie the biggest historical mistake overall revolves around the leading character and hero of this movie, Maximus. This is because he is entirely made up, he did not exist. So every event or action that involves him is false. Lucilla and he never had relations when they were younger, he didn't kill anyone, and he was not supposed to be the protector of Rome like they showed Marcus Aurelis wanting. Although Maximus may be a compilation of people who were real. For instance the man who did command the battle in the opening scene which most likely occured in 179 was Taruttiens Paternus. Also how he longed to be home and his family are from Claudius Pompeianus who was a military officer whose career resembled Maximus's (Ward). A short while after the opening scene we are transported to North African Zucchabar where yet more inaccuracies occur. The first being the misconception from the movie that Gladiator games had been banned by Maximus Aurelis. This is stated by the character Proximo who purchased Maximus to be one of his gladiators. He described how he was forced to make a living due to the games being banned. Also the Coliseum is supposed to have been reopened by Commodus to host games to honor his father. • 11. Gladiator Movie. vs History During the Roman Empire many emperors ruled in their own ways. Some were considered to be one of the "Five Good Emperors, " and the others didn't last because they were assassinated. They either just cared about themselves or actually cared about the citizens of Rome. The movie Gladiator portrays Roman life and the gladiatorial games. Really though, how does the movie compare to the history of the Roman Empire? I am really interested in the actual history of the gladiators and the movie is one of my favorites. That's why I chose to do my review on it and I came to find out that the movie didn't give me the information on the real life and times of the gladiators. They had to inspect the men just by looking at their bodies and making sure they were strong and healthy enough to purchase. "I did not pay good money for you, for your company. I paid it so I could profit from your death," he said. These quotes show that no one cared about the gladiators because they were slaves. All they cared about was that they put on a good show. Gladiator didn't show much of the training that the men received. Most of it was them in battle, but not what went on behind the scenes and all the vigorous training they had to go through. Watching the behind the scenes was interesting because throughout the whole thing I thought to myself, 'wow this is crazy how much work it took for all these men to become gladiators for the film.' No wonder they were all buff, because they did hours and hours of training everyday. In Roman times, gladiators had to endure lengthy and demanding training so that they could be prepared for what lay before them. In the movie, Maximus was Rome's greatest general so they just assumed he was the best around and didn't need any training. One thing I noticed that wasn't historically accurate was the chants of the spectators at the arena. When a gladiator was wounded the audience was able to whether or not they want him to be killed or spared. The way the audience would decide would be either to wave their thumbs around, if they want him to be spared, or they would press their thumb against their opposite hand, ... • 13. Gladiator, by Ridley Scott Who doesn't love a movie where the protagonist is off on a quest for revenge in numerous action sequences for his taste of sweet, sweet revenge? When breaking films into this type of category, one film that stands out among the rest has to be Gladiator. Gladiator can be argued as one of the greatest action movies of all time, and for good reasons. The soundtrack, dialogue, and characters have no equal in the revenge action category of film, and can be considered tops of pure action films. Gladiator is a perfectly well rounded movie that adds the best of all worlds to create the masterpiece seen today. Ridley Scott's masterpiece, Gladiator, was released to the public in 2000. The soundtrack has received critical acclaim from numerous reviews and was a best seller, selling millions of copies of the soundtrack alone to anxious listeners. The songs helped set the pace of the movie and made a good movie into an excellent movie. Some of the favorite songs from the soundtrack include "The Battle," "Elysium," and the favorite "Now We Are Free." Mixing a combination of soft melodies and ballads, with battle waltzes, the soundtrack covered all ground and provides future composers the groundwork for future war epics. While Hans Zimmer gets most of the credit and praise for Gladiator's score, he could not do it alone without Lisa Gerrard, who co– composed the score and provided the vocals. This soundtrack was so well received that it was nominated for an Academy Award and a BAFTAAward for best score, and won a Golden Globe for best original score. Compared to other action films, Gladiator is hard to top. As a reviewer of the soundtrack, Roko Zaper, said Gladiator, "By the very nature of the film itself, the score to Gladiator is perhaps hard to grasp for some, but in it Zimmer and Gerrard have created a score that transgresses its genre and brings the music into an unforgettable arena, an Elysium of drama if you will." I have chosen to analyse the scene where the gladiators are battling in the Middle East. The scene contains many features and editing techniques which make the fight sequence exciting and thrilling. The scene begins with a medium high angle shot of a goat with blood dripping down its body. This shot frames the body of the goat and gives it a sense of vulnerability. The shot creates meaning to the viewer who can predict that the scene might contain violence or bloodshed of some sort. The camera then zooms outward into an establishing shot to give the viewer an idea of the setting. The mise en ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The lighting is very low key and most of the light filters from the roof, overhead. The overhead lighting dominates the gladiatorÂ's faces and brings out their facial features. This effect shows the faces of the gladiatorÂ's and their anticipation of the battle which is about to commence. Non diegetic orchestral music starts to begin once more building the tension. The camera then cuts into a close up of every gladiator whilst moving slowly to the side where it stops and gives us a side view shot of the gladiatorÂ's showing in detail their facial expressions. This is where the dialogue of the main character begins and the camera moves slowly to a medium low angle shot, thus giving the character a sense of authority. The character speaks slowly and when he accentuates an important point the camera moves to a close up of the main character of the film (Russell Crowe), showing the viewer his feelings and his anticipation. In the background there is the external diegetic sound of the crowd chanting, kill, kill, kill. This along with the orchestral music sounds like a heart beat as there is a short pause between every chant. Again the heart beat sound reiterates the anticipation of the gladiators; this is effective as it makes the scene more exciting and exhilarating to watch. • 17. The Roman Colosseum : Architectural Designs And Architecture The Romans were no fools when it came to their architectural designs and engineering. One of their biggest designs and infrastructure in their time was the Roman Colosseum. The Colosseum's appearance and well thought design is one that has impacted our world today. It took the Romans many years to build with a lot of knowledge, strength and belief from its people. Once this masterpiece was completed, the Roman Colosseum hosted thousands of games and gladiator battles, which influenced the people of their time and the modern world. The Colosseum, also known as the Amphitheater of the Flavians, was the first permanent amphitheater to be built in Rome. Unlike many other amphitheaters, the Colosseum was placed directly in the city center. Built out of concrete, this material allowed for them to build more quickly and efficiently. The amphitheater was so massive, it covered about six acres. Roman architects designed this building using many different type of column styles from the ancient Greeks. Each level of the Colosseum reflected a different style, the first floor showed the Doric style, the second floor showed Ionic and on the third showed Corinthian, all columns reflecting beauty and artistry. The construction of the arches was one that the architects were trying to express size and proportion, they reached over fifteen stories. There were eighty, very large arches at ground level, that is where spectators were to enter the Colosseum. In the center was an overly ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 19. Essay about Gladiator Gladiator Directed by Ridley Scott, Gladiator is an epic tale of honor, love, loyalty and power. If you could only see two movies a year make Gladiator one of them. It is full of action, adventure, drama, deceit and love. Russell Crowe plays the Roman General, Maximus, who heads the Roman Army in their conquers of Europe and Africa under the emperor Marcus Aurelius. Maximus has served Rome for " two years, 264 days and this morning," and is anxiously awaiting his release by the emperor so that he may go home and be with his dearly missed wife and son. But Maximus is more than a general to Aurelius, he is the son he should of had and the needed successor to the emperor. Aurelius has known that his true son, the ... When Aurelius reveals his announcement to the anxious Commodus, he suffocates his father to gain what he thinks is rightfully his, the power of emperor. Commodus is a weak, young man. He is so frightened of Maximus that he orders the execution of Maximus and his family. Maximus is able to escape execution but could not save his family in time. The most heart wrenching scene of the movie is Maximus finding his wife and (more) child brutalized, burned and hanging on the family front porch. Maximus weeps for his family but also for his own death. The thought of seeing his family is the only thing that has kept him alive. You can feel the love he feels for them. Crowe makes you believe the pain and heartache that Maximus is feeling. You ache for his loss and want revenge against Commodus. Maximus becomes enslaved in a foreign land and is forced to fight for his life as a gladiator. Maximus' fame as a gladiator grew within Rome as his skill at combat became apparent. Commodus fears that Maximus will turn the Roman people against him and return rule of Rome to the Senate. Maximus is a hero for the people and Commodus is a snake. This movie is believable. The acting by Crowe and Phoenix makes you believe the stories and the use of digital imagery recreates ancient Rome down to the last intricate detail.

One could see how ancient gladiators have received such biased and negative reputation through the many modern movies, television shows, and comics that have depicted them in such a way. Contrary to the modern idea of gladiators, they were actually a well–organized and controlled sporting event. While some gladiators did kill, the majority did not receive permission to end the life of their opponents. To really understand the gladiator, one must first understand how they lived. Ballet states that: "the objective was therefore to avoid killing ones opponent, but to put on a good show." (Ballet, Bazin, Vranceanu, 201). Striking an opponent to the death during combat was highly discouraged. The majority of deaths occurred later because of injuries occurred during the contest. The Editore would be in charge of deciding whether the gladiator had earned the right to fight another day or if he had met his end. There, gladiator fights occurred often in arenas. One of the most famous was the Colosseum. Half of the time, gladiators were actually slaves (Wood). Though they seldom died, other spinoffs of their battles would transpire. For instance, sea battles and fights fought with wild animals would take their place (Wood). These types generally resulted in more than one death. Ancient Romans enjoyed watching them clash their swords together and, if they paid extra, battle until death (Bancroft–Hunt). The film 'Gladiator' was released in 2000. A thrilling action film, it was a huge success, scooping five Oscars and earning over $427 million dollars. Sir Ridley Scott– who directed the film–already had many great films to his name, such as 'Alien', 'Blade Runner' and 'American Gangster', so it was no surprise when this film became one of the highest earners of the year 2000. It is also used to emphasise the fact that Maximus is the character the film will be based around. Following the close up, there is a shot of a robin sitting on the branch of a tree, after a short while it flies away, perhaps sensing danger. The shot is then back to Maximus, who is smiling sadly, possibly at the thought of the robin being able to fly away from it all, when he can't. The way that mise–en–scene has been used to depict a slight fear in the character of Maximus, adds contrast to his personality, which in turn adds depth, leaving the audience feeling able to connect to him. The music in this scene makes it almost haunting as it creates a calm yet uneasy atmosphere. Maximus is wearing gold in this which, not only continues the theme of gold, but also represents his authority. The combination of this strong, powerful figure being slightly fearful at what lies ahead, adds to the uneasy atmosphere. The lighting in the sequence is also a lot darker than the previous which adds to the implication that the atmosphere is about to change, this along with the non–diegetic sounds like the wind blowing and the distant sound of birds, help create a really dramatic, prominent sequence which leads on ... The Colosseum was begun in the year AD 72 and was still uncompleted at the time of Vespasian's death in 79. He was succeeded by his elder son, Titus, who undertook the completion of the Flavian Amphitheater. It was officially opened in AD 80 for the inaugural games. Although the original name of this dynamic building was the Flavian Amphitheater, several centuries after being built it was referred to as the Colosseum, a lasting title. The building received this nickname from a statue that stood near the site of the arena. According to Pearson, the statue originally was of Nero, but Vespasian changed the head of the statue to the sun god, Apollo. And it was this colossus, with Apollo's head, that gave the arena its infamous name, the Colosseum. The Colosseum was built in a valley found between the Esquiline, the Palatine, and the Caelian hills. The spot chosen, where Nero's lake used to be, was interesting and made a bold statement. Some might believe that animals were used to make the fights more entertaining. But I believe that it was very unkind to the animals and inhumane. This is misguided because they could have use something else to entertain themselves like plays or something other than killing thousands of animals and humans. Many animals went extinct in the colosseum. The animals killed a lot of people at the colosseum. They(people in the colosseum and the townspeople) would kill a lot of animals. The definition of a gladiator is a person who was a professional fighter, and fought in front of people in the colosseum in the Roman Empire. Some things about the colosseum are it was started to be built in 70 A.D and finished 10 years later. The height of the colosseum was 157ft and the perimeter was 1788 ft. There were 4 floors and it could hold 50,000 people. The arena was 180 ft wide and 287 ft long. One other thing about the colosseum is over 1 million animals died there. They were also a big influence on how Romans themselves ordered their lives. Attending the games was one of the practices that went with being a Roman. The Etruscans who introduced this type of contest in the sixth century BC, are credited with its development but its the Romans who made it famous. A surviving feature of the Roman games was when a gladiator fell he was hauled out of the arena by a slave dressed as the Etruscan death–demon Charun. The crimes which led to the arena were murder, treason, robbery and arson. Criminals sentenced to forced labor were often obliged to serve as gladiators, and were sentenced to three years of combat and two years in the schools. Sometimes penalties were differentiated according to social class, thus for certain crimes which in the case of slaves would involve execution, free men or freedmen (ex–slaves) were condemned to fight in the arena instead. This did not of course make them gladiators, unless they were trained first, as those required to provide this sort of sport not always were. And indeed as gladiators became more expensive in the second century AD the use of untrained criminals in the amphitheater increased.(7:537) Most gladiators, at Rome and elsewhere were slaves, but in addition there were always some free men who became gladiators because they wanted to. The profession was an alternative to being a social outcast. The Romans had many choices of what to do during their spare time, such as ball games, board games, and watching gladiatorial fights in the Colosseum; this was the most popular type of entertainment. To many people today, Roman entertainment was classed as cruel. However, not all forms of entertainment involved such violence as within the Colosseum. Without this use of colour change the audience would find it more difficult to tell that the hero experienced a radical journey from a general to a slave to a gladiator, then a hero. As the trailer begins, slow images combined with Written Words are used to give the target audience time to familiarise themselves with the story of Maximus. For example the first few shots are of Russell Crowe as a general, then a slave, then a gladiator. This makes it clear to the audience who the main character is and helps to set the scene. Then the images start to become faster and more exciting. This is achieved by using rapid cuts which increases the viewer's excitement. For example the viewer now sees images of sword fights, fierce tigers and overturned chariots. A shot of a chariot overturning and the image of a horse jumping through flames have also been included, but slowed down because they are exciting stunts and the director doesn't want the audience to miss them. Also by encapsulating a shot of Commodus screaming at his sister the audience can tell that the film will be dramatic.
