2. Introduction
In my school there are 3 larger computer suites with 2 small banks of computers.
There are a number of i-Pads available for staff to pre-book for their lessons.
There are 3 trolleys of notebooks which also can be pre-booked for any lesson.
The school now have a number of Raspberry Pi machines available.
Some departments have cameras suitable for taking pictures and videos; these are available to
borrow by other departments. Scanners and printers are available in the RBL which is a resource
room, the library and also the schools main office. Some departments do have their own printers
but this is limited.
My position in the school is a level 3 learning support assistant. I work with children aged
between 11 and 16. I work in a mainstream school with children of all abilities. Some have 1-1
support but I work mostly with interventions with groups of children and also in a classroom
setting.
My intentions for the activity are to enable the pupils to gain knowledge of hazards in ICT.
I had little knowledge of ICT when I started in my post twelve tears ago. I did not have any
confidence as I was unsure of what to do on the computers. The ICT teacher at the time helped
me a lot and I stayed behind school to have some 1-1 lessons on the basics. I do a lot of internet
banking, shopping, holidays and research on the computer now. I feel more confident now and
to teach the basics myself as well as try new software with pupils.
3. Learning Objectives
By the end of the session I will want the
children to recognise a hazard and list the
dangers to health and gain knowledge to
prevent them from dangers. We will
discuss lesson objectives and define any
words they are unsure of at start of lesson.
Pupils who finish will design a PowerPoint
presentation/ poster or e-mail it to my
school e-mail and their classmates.
4. Class
dynamics
The number of children I will teach are 5. Their age range is 12-13, key stage 3. Some are more able than
others. There is a pupil with ALN. He has little confidence and self-esteem. There is also a pupil who has
behaviour issues and can be quite disruptive.
The ICT Sterling Group was established in Wales to explore and consider the future of computer science
and ICT in Wales and they suggest that; ‘’ Digital Literacy is the start and not the point- learners need to
be taught to create as well as to consume.’’ (WAG.2008)
With ICT children can learn by their spelling mistakes as they are underlined in red. They can also use
whiteboards and dictionaries or ask for help if they feel they need too.
‘’Pupils should be given opportunities to spell correctly and check spelling by using various methods,
including ICT’’) “Using digital technology is part of everyday life for many of us. (WAG.2008
I agree with ESTYN that ICT skills can be a challenge for some pupils in secondary schools and they
sometimes do not have enough opportunities with applying their knowledge and skill in ICT as they
have limited time or use of a computer outside school. Pupils with ALN who are of lower ability to the
rest of the class are working on a relevant framework adjusted to their needs and not their age.
‘’However, developing competent ICT skills in secondary schools is a challenge and pupils need to
have enough opportunities to apply their skills in different contexts.’’ (ESTYN, 2014)
‘’For some learners, particularly those with additional needs, the notional
relationship with age will not be relevant. For learners with more complex
needs, a focus on the skills in the framework will provide opportunities to
meet individual priorities across the curriculum.’’

Curriculum/Foundation Phase
documents reference
Pupils should, where appropriate, develop their understanding through:
• digital-based resources
• the internet
Investigating
Pupils should investigate:
• the properties of materials and processes
• natural objects and environments
• made objects and environments
• imagined objects and environments.
They should, where appropriate, apply to their own work relevant findings collected from:
• videos
• digital-based resources
• the internet

Pupils can draft, edit and improve their work, using ICT as appropriate, to: plan, draft, revise,
proof-read and prepare a final copy. They can use appropriate features of layout and
presentation of ICT not just in ICT but other lessons.

Response to previous assessments and evaluations: (what can learners do? What do they still have difficulty with? What are the implications
for this lesson?)
Students worked well through the data protection act
Workers are a bit rowdy but don’t cause any harmful disruption
Learning objectives: Intentions for the development of knowledge, skills and understanding
Lesson Objectives
* Students will know how to spot a hazard in ICT.
* Students will understand the dangers to health which these problems may cause
* Students will gain knowledge of what they can do to prevent these health issues occurring
Success criteria: (what are you looking for?)
Students to have answered the problem page questions including details of
all of the health problems and their precautions
Students to have understood how these health risks are caused and to have
a good knowledge on how to keep them selves safe.
Students would have researched another health risk and found out how to
protect them selves
Assessment strategies: (how will you assess?)
Offer support to students to better their study. Walk around
and monitor screens, ask students to help each other.
Lessson Plan
7. Differentiation: (what are your specific strategies to ensure access and challenge for ALL learners?)
Students will be supported via a class discussion at the start of the class and will be set the presentation which contains the information
I will be able to explain any information which students do not understand to them if they require.

Starter activity
Students enter the room and log on – take register during this time.
Discuss lesson objectives
Teacher discussion
Ask students if they have studied the topic before, start teacher lead discussion
Ask students questions to check understanding, give examples of different health risks
and ways in which they can be prevented. Use the image on the board and ask
students so circle any health and safety risks and give an explanation of why they
chose it.
Give hand out to students and explain the task. Students need to read a problem page
and answer to the problem. This will allow students to pick out the health risk which is
being implicated and decide what precautions best suite it. By doing it this way it
ensures students have to read over their work rather than copy it out.
Extension – If students complete the question page ask them to produce a PowerPoint
presentation that outlines 3 health and safety risks and what can be done to help
prevent them.
Check students understand the topic and ask if there is any questions
Walk around and support students whilst they do their task
Plenary
Go over learning objectives on the board
Check students understanding, have a discussion.
Give a good parting comment
8. skills across the curriculum: Developing thinking – planning, developing and reflecting; Developing communication – oracy, reading,
writing and wider communication; Developing ICT; Developing number. State how you will address in the lesson.
Students had to do a small amount of research in this lesson which is useful for skills across the curriculum.
As students will be replying to letters they will be using and writing skills which in turn may develop their communication skills.
This will be addressed through out the lesson as these are in important skills to use no matter what age.
Learning across the curriculum: (e.g. Cwricwlwm Cymreig, Wales, Europe and the World; PSE; Careers and the World of Work; ESDGC).
State how you will address in the lesson as and where appropriate.
Knowing these health and safety risks will allow them to be aware of the risks in the world of work and help them develop in health and
safety.
Development of Welsh language/ incidental Welsh:
Use incidental welsh in lesson – hello, good morning, sit down, no talking etc
Health and safety issues:
Regular health and safety ICT rules Apply

Evaluation / Review of lesson with targets for the next stage of learning:
Students were irritating at start – didn’t want to settle, last lesson they wanted to go home.
9. Resources
The pupils will use a personal computer
each.
Interactive White Board and pen.
Resource sheet.
Use internet for researching hazards in ICT.
12. The Evaluation
The pupils were un-settled at first as it was their last lesson and came straight from lunch. After a disruptive
start we discussed the objective. This worked well as I put the picture up on the IWB and all the pupils
joined in the discussion. They also found other hazards that were not highlighted in the picture.
What happened – a summary of what occurred
The children learnt how to recognise the hazards in ICT by discussing and seeing the hazard picture I put on
the interactive white board (IWB) at the start of the lesson. They all participated in going up to the IWB to
highlight the hazards and the discussion.
ICT supported this lesson as they had a computer each to research the hazards which we had went over
previously. All pupils used the software they were most comfortable working with and prepared their work
on PowerPoint and on Publisher.
I supported the learning by discussing all objectives at the start of the lesson and supported a pupil 1-1 as
he is an ALN pupil who needed a little more help than the others.
The use of ICT impact on pupil learning helped develop their knowledge and understanding of the hazards
by researching the information and this helped them with their ideas and information. They had
confidence in using the resources . They then created their own work and also some of the pupils wanted
to show their presentations at the end of the lesson.
I learnt that even when pupils have little confidence in ICT they always try . They can try different software
and if there is any mistakes with their work they can easily adjust it without there being a permanent record
of it. In this lesson there were enough computers for each pupil, by this they were more confident in trying
different applications of the software. They enjoyed the inserting of pictures and changing the background
colours. All pupils had previous knowledge of the different software available. The impact was that the
pupils were motivated and worked independently and this then enhanced their self esteem to work with
ICT. ICT is embedded in our school and they use it in a majority of lessons even though the pupils may not
get to access them at home.
In the future I would change the software slightly to maybe Prezi as the pupils have no experience of this.
Next time I will allow the pupils to use Plotagon where they can use animation to make it more exciting.
They can use this on an I-PAD. The pupils were motivated and engaged after a not so good start, however,
one pupil who was more than capable was chatty and did not complete the work set. I had to sit with her
to get the work done on break time.
13. The Evidence
Dear, Kelly-Ann.
I have read your letter and I’m sorry to hear about your mums
problems. To solve your mums problems she needs to get a wrist strap,
and also RSI stands for Repetitive Strain Injury.
Thank you.
Mona Lott.
Dear, Amy.
I am sorry to hear you are having problems with your back.
You do not have to stop going on MSN, but what you do
need to is buy an adjustable chair. Buying an adjustable
chair will stop your back from hurting, because you can
change the height of the chair to suite the height of the
keyboard. Also I would not go on your computer on your
bed, because your computer will over-heat and maybe
catch on fire. So you need to buy a desk and sit on the
adjustable chair.
Thank you, Mona Lott.
Dear, David.
I am sorry hear your problem , you do not have to stop
playing on your computer games at night. You have to
turn the lights on from stopping your eyes from straining,
the brightness on your computer is causing your
headaches, straining your eyes, and lack of tiredness and
concentration at school. I also recommend you go to
sleep earlier on school nights, because you wouldn’t
want to fall asleep in assembly again, do you?
Thank you, Mona Lott.

Teacher Comments
Excellent work Anna! You have worked hard
on your responses and shown a sound
understanding of how to stay safe in ICT.
You have written your work well and really
thought about how to make it informative.
In order to develop add some images to
make sure people fully understand what
you are talking about. For example, an
image of a wrist strap for repetitive strain
injury.
14. Pupil 2
Dear Amy,
If you love going on msn
you do not have to stop
going on it, just buy and
adjustable chair and a
desk. An adjustable chair
will prevent back ache,
you can adjust the height
to what you need it as.
Also you can relax by
putting the back part
down. I also recommend
you do not leave your
laptop on your bed
because it will get too
warm and start a fire!
Yours sincerely
Mona lott.
Dear david, CL
Don’t go on your laptop at night with
the lights off if you want to switch
Teacher Comments
Good knowledge and
understanding of the hazards.
However, you are more than
capable of completing the work set.
You could have inserted pictures
and added more detail. Remember
capital letters CL for names and less
talking next time.
15. Pupil 3
Dear Amy Weston.
You don’t need to stop going on MSN but you
should really think about getting an adjustable chair , because it
will help your posture/poison and you r back will get better in now
time If you carry on laying on your bed while on your laptop it will
overheat or worse set a fire!
Thank you for your letter,
Yours faithfully
Mona
16. Pupil4
Dear, Amy
You don’t have to stop going on msn, maybe if u have an
adjustable chair it will help your back. You can adjust your
chair in any way you want. you don’t have to stop going
on msn, perhaps you should do something else for a hour
or so but don’t go on it to much and try to stay active as
possible.
Thanks for getting in touch,
Mona.
18. Dear, Kelly-Ann
Your mothers wrists are in pain because
she’s very focussed on her work and
doesn't have a little break. She needs a
break for her wrists. She could also use a
wrist strap for extra support. If she still has
trouble I would advise seeing a doctor.
Thanks for getting in touch,
Mona.

19. Teacher comments
• You have clearly understood the E-safety rules and can adapt
them to issues people may face. You have given some
excellent advice to help people stay safe when using ICT.
Excellent work Jodie, gwaith da!
• Literacy Target – Be careful when typing, remember to always
write in full and use the correct grammar G, you and your
should always be written fully.
21. It is important to use an adjustable
chair because they are more
comfortable and you can adjust the
height.
22. You can stop hurting your eyes at a
computer if u work in the correct
light and were glasses if possible.
23. It is not safe to eat or drink by a
computer because if u tip a drink on
the keyboard u can get electrocuted
the keyboard if any food or drink is
typed on it the key will go stiff.
24. If u plug in to many plugs it can blow
up and it can also waste electric.
25. Repetitive Strain Injury is a general
term used to describe the pain felt
in mussels nerves' and tendons
because over use of the computer.
26. Teacher Comments
You have worked very well today and have good understanding of the hazards in ICT. Da iawn!
Please remember your correct grammar G, also check spelling either on the computer or with
me when working in class.
