Two World Wars
World War l
World War ll
4
By 1914 tensions between
some European countries
led to aggressive acts
against each other.
Countries chose sides and
prepared for War.
5
6
What led to European
countries hating each other
so much that they killed
over ten million people?
Let’s take a look.
7
8
Why did World War I
result in so many
deaths?
Check it out.
9
10
Class Discussion
Can you name any
advanced weapons we
use today in our military?
11
What was the
result of the first
World War?
Read on.
12
13
Germany and Austria-
Hungary lost the war and
were held responsible for
the horrible results of
World War ll.
14
As a result, by the late 1930’s
the stage was set for World
War II.
The German and Austrian
people had rebuilt their
armies and were very
nationalistic and patriotic.
Class Discussion
How would you describe someone
who is very patriotic and
nationalistic?
Have you heard the expression
“My country right or wrong”?
What might that mean?
15
16
During the 1930’s, Adolf
Hitler came to power in
Germany and created his
Nazi party and a huge
military.
Hitler’s goal was to control
the countries around
Germany.
Discuss
Does the Nazi Party exist today?
What are some of the ideas
expressed by Nazi’s today?
17
18
19
As Nazi Germany attacked
neighboring countries, major
countries chose sides and
signed treaties creating two
sides:
The Axis Powers and The
Allies
20
Class Discussion
 World War ll was over 70 years ago. Do
you think the role of women changed
because of the war?
 How would you describe the role of
women before World War ll and during the
war?
21
22
World War II involved all
Americans. Millions of men
and women served in the
military and millions were
asked to work in factories
making military airplanes
and equipment.
23
24
During World War II,
technology was used to
create many new
inventions that helped
with the war effort.
25
Discuss
 What kind of military weapons and
tools do we have today that were not
available during World War ll?
 What is different about the way wars
are fought today?
26
From 1939 until 1941 the
United States supported the
Allies, but did not enter the
war until the Japanese
launched a surprise attack on
the naval base at Pearl
Harbor in Hawaii. 27
The U.S. was attacked on
December 7, 1941.
The Japanese destroyed 19
U.S.Naval ships.
2400 Americans were killed in
the attack
A Large Part of the U.S. Naval
Fleet was Destroyed
Japan Declares War on the U.S.
The next day, on December
8, 1941, the United States
Congress declared war on
Japan and entered World War
ll on the side of the Allies.
33
Moving Toward Victory
World War ll went on for several more years
as millions of people were killed. The war
raged in Europe, North Africa, and the
Pacific. Britain, the Soviet Union, and the
United States secretly planned an invasion
of mainland Europe in June of 1944. The
goal was to re-take France and advance on
Germany.
34
Allies Land Troops on the
Northern Coast of France
Possibly the Most Important
Military Operation in the History
of the World
Battle for the Beaches
The beach landing at Normandy
was very dangerous.
The Allies Were Fighting to Save
the World from Nazi Domination
German troops had thousands
of fortified weapons aimed
toward the beach.
More than half of the soldiers
died before they could reach
land.
The invasion at Normandy was
the key to defeating Germany.
Securing freedom can be
very costly.
Hitler Surrenders
With millions of Allied troops
advancing on Berlin, the capital of
Germany, Hitler prepared to
surrender. On May 7,1945,
Germany surrendered and war in
Europe was over. The war in the
Pacific with Japan was still raging.
44
The Big Bomb
Since the Allies were still fighting Japan
and incurring heavy losses, a plan was
prepared to drop the first atomic bomb.
The use of a nuclear weapon would
have horrific consequences for the
people of Japan. The effects of
radiation would be gruesome.
45
The U.S. Goal
The U.S. Warns Japan of
a Rain of Ruin
Atomic Bomb Dropped on
Hiroshima August 6, 1945
A Second Bomb was Dropped
on Nagasaki Three Days Later
The Devastation
was Complete
The two cities were leveled.
Children are always
victims in war.
Many Became Orphans
One Week Later
Japan Surrendered
Game Over
Dropping the Atomic
Bomb on Japan ended a
five year war in five days!
55
Class Discussion
Should the United States have
dropped the atomic bomb on
Japan?
What are the pros and cons of the
issue?
56
World War ll Ended
on August 14,1945
The task of freeing the people
of Europe and releasing
thousands of war prisoners
began. Hitler had many
concentration camps where he
kept millions of persecuted
Jews.
57
Six Million Men, Women, and
Children Murdered
Adolph Hitler wanted a pure,
master race to rule a world
empire.
Atrocities of World War ll
During World War ll Hitler
murdered over six million
Jews. This attempt to
exterminate Jews is called
the holocaust.
60
Under Hitler, Germany
Committed Horrendous
Atrocities
The parents of children were
put in gas chambers and
exterminated
Class Discussion
Atrocities Still Take Place
Do you know what genocide
means?
Have you ever heard of ethnic
cleansing?
63
Gas Chambers in Nazi Germany
Millions were buried in
mass graves.
Millions lost their lives in battles
and in concentration camps.
Who suffered the most loses?
Class Discussion
Let’s look more closely at that circle graph
(on the next slide).
Look at the civilian deaths. Which side
appears to be the aggressor? Who suffered
the most? Which side lost almost 15 times
as many noncombatants and families?
Which military forces lost almost twice as
many soldiers? Who won the war?
68
Which countries lost more men,
women and children?
Many who survived had
life altering injuries.
71
There were many changes
brought about by World War II.
Some changes were very
positive, but others set the
stage for the Cold War struggle
between Communism and the
free world.
Discuss
How might our country
be different if Nazi
Germany and Hitler had
won World War ll ?
72
After World War ll
The world experienced
many changes after the
war ended.
73
