This document provides instructions for accessing and searching electronic journals through the University of Derby Library. It explains how to login, find specific journals using the E-Journals Finder, and search for articles on topics using Library Plus. Library Plus allows searching across many of the library's e-journal subscriptions and databases. The document provides tips for effective searching, such as using keywords and filters, and how to view and save full text articles. Users are directed to subject guides and librarians for additional help with e-journal searches.
2. Logging in
All our electronic library resources need to be
accessed through the University of Derby Library
pages. Login through UDo then go to the Library
web page.
This is because we pay for our online resources
and you need to show that you are eligible to use
them.
3. Finding a specific journal
• To find a specific electronic journal use the
E-Journals Finder.
• Do not use the E-Journals Finder to find articles
from a range of journals.
• You may also use Library Plus to find a specific
journal
4. To go to the E-Journals

6. E-Journals Finder lists all the Library’s
e-journals. Don’t use it as a search for
journal articles on a topic
Example of locating a particular e-journal
article:
Sumner, A (2013) Poverty, politics & aid.

Type in the journal title or part of the
journal title (not the journal article title)
i.e. third world quarterly

7. You can then either:
Type in some title words in the
search box for Journal of Sports
Sciences. See search box left.
Or: You can click on the
publisher link (Taylor & Francis)
to browse the journal. This will
also tell you which years we
have access to.

16. Where to look for electronic journal
articles on a topic?
There is no one single correct way of searching for
journal articles on a topic, but it is recommended you
use Library Plus
17. Library Plus Includes
•Many of our electronic journals subscriptions
•Many of the library journals databases (including
Expanded Academic ASAP, Science Full Text
Select, Science Direct)
18. Library Plus also includes
Lists of journal articles we don’t have immediate
access to.
e.g. journals we don’t subscribe to but which are in
indexes and database e.g., Web of Science,
19. There are various ways of searching Library Plus. You can
search Library Plus directly from the Library page.
This is a basic search, though you are then able to refine your
search. For anything other than a very basic search it may be
better to go to the Library Plus search page.

21. If you use Basic Search you can
click on Search Options

22. Full Text: limits search to e-journal articles we have access to.
For a journals search, this is the best option at this stage to
avoid finding publications we don’t have access to.

give more flexibility &
allows you to do a more
sophisticated search

using the different search boxes.
AND combines the search terms &
narrows the search.
Think of keywords and be prepared
to change them and use alternatives.
Do not put in long phrases or essay
titles
Tick this box & you will only see articles we have full
access to.
If you leave it unticked you will also see journal
articles we do not have full access to

If you need to you alter the search by
using more keywords, by date, limiting to
academic journals or e.g. by changing
the field to title (so a word has to be in
the article title)
26. An abstract or summary is often
available from the title link
Full Text gives access to the full journal
article. “Get Full Text may require
several clicks” to view the full journal
article.

29. Saving references in Library Plus
You can save results into a folder in Library Plus.
If you want to save references for future use you can
create your own personal account and then Sign In
to your personal account.
You can give folders names.
You still need to login through the Library page to
start with.

Signing in with a personal username & password
& this will save any folders for future use.
You can save results into a folder. Click on the “+”
icon which changes to an envelope.

32. Using Library Plus to look for a
specific journal article
You can look for a specific journal article when you
know the details either using:
•Electronic Journals A-Z (as earlier example)
•Library Plus (but doesn’t include absolutely every
journal which is in our A-Z list)

e.g. change the fields to author
or title or source and type in
the author’s name, and/or a
