1. Taylor & Francis Journals Database – a Brief Guide
About Taylor & Francis Journals
It provides full-text access to a wide number of journals and e-books in education, the social
sciences and humanities.
How to access it
Taylor & Francis is available from on and off UWS campuses: access it from the UWS Library ‘One
Search’ > Specialist Resources list or from the Library Website > Subject Support > Education or
Childhood Studies. You will need to login with your UWS student Banner ID (or staff AD no.) and
network password.
Searching the database
Type in your keyword(s) or phrase in the search box and click on the magnifying glass symbol:
Remember to try searching for different / alternative search words and terms for your topic.
About using Boolean operators (AND, OR, NOT) to broaden or narrow searches:
(Note that on Taylor & Francis, Boolean operators should be capitalised)
o AND: to narrow a search = with all of the words
e.g. outdoor education AND forest schools
(Note that the AND operator is applied by default: for example the above search would
produce the same results as outdoor education forest schools.)
o OR: to broaden a search = with at least one of the words
e.g. outdoor education OR outdoor learning
o NOT: to eliminate unwanted words from a search = without the words. Take care if
you use ‘not’ as you may exclude useful results.
e.g. outdoor education NOT adventure
Enclose phrases within double quotation marks - e.g. “formative assessment”
Use truncation to search for variant word endings or spellings: use an asterisk *
e.g. assess* will find assess, assessed, assesses, assessment etc.
Viewing and Refining Search Results
Note that not all of the articles, and other content, on Taylor & Francis are available in full text
from our UWS Library subscription content. Those items which are available in full text have tick
on green background symbol with the article brief details, as shown below, or, if they are ‘Open
Access’ items freely available, they will have an orange open padlock symbol as on right, below:
Click on the title of an article/item to view the abstract (summary) and other details about the
article, including ‘Keyword’ subject headings, and get the PDF or other link to the article full text (if
available). There is also a Download Citation option (though note that you will have to amend the
2. details to UWS Harvard reference style if you plan to use an article for your work) and see the
other options to explore from the article full details page.
The search results screen offers various options for refining / modifying your search, to narrow
down and filter your search(es): you can limit to a certain subject topic, publication name, author,
or keyword(s), and there is the option to set a particular date range.
Refine your search:
o Note also the Publication date option, which allows you to set date limits
o You can limit your results to “Only show content I have full access to”, though note that this
could exclude details of articles potentially of interest to you.
o You could choose the Subject option for Education. Note the subject sub-headings that open
up (e.g. Secondary Education), which allow you to further narrow down the subject.
Modify your search:
o You could modify your search to look for your search word(s) in Keywords (i.e. subject
headings) only. Select from the drop-down options. This may return more relevant results.
There are also options for Title (of article) or Author search. Note that the default Anywhere
option searches across the full text of articles in the database. Note that you can click on the +
symbol to add another search box: that allows you to combine a search for some words in
Keyword and others in Anywhere. Try other combinations as required.
