Living With Attention Deficit Hyperactive Disorder
I. Introduction Living with Attention Deficit Hyperactive Disorder is one of the hardest challenges I
have ever faced. Having been diagnosed at the age of seven, it is the most prevalent thing in my life.
ADHD is the most commonly diagnosed psychological disorder in the United States (Hughes). It is
a persistent disorder, often prevalent through adolescence and adulthood. Most individuals
diagnosed are between the ages of seven and nine, although there have been numerous cases where
individuals have been diagnosed in their later years. Case studies show that males are four times
more likely to be diagnosed/affected with ADHD, and lately, studies have shown an unexplained
increase in the number of diagnoses made in children. It has been recognized that in the past, people
have scoffed at the diagnosis of ADHD, and even disregarding and bashing the disorder, calling it
things like, "a real medical hoax"(Citation). These individuals, however, are severely misguided,
seeing as though ADHD is a real disorder, and it affects millions of people worldwide in present
day. There have been neurological studies studying and showing that ADHD is, in fact,
neurologically related, and it is most likely caused by chemical imbalances in individual's brains
(Citation). One greatly debated question in the world of Attention Deficit Hyperactive Disorder is,
"Can an individual that was diagnosed with ADHD eventually outgrow it?" One side of this
argument states that an individual that has been

It is very hard and troubling for those that are always in trouble in school, at home and run in with
the law. Through research and parents report on their child's disruptive behavior, medical profession
put a tag on this troubling disorder as attention–deficit/hyperactivity impulsivity disorder (ADHD).
Therefore, I will describe attention–deficit/hyperactivity disorder, describe the prevalence of ADHD,
outline methods or strategies that address ADHD, and describe the identification and the assessment
process of ADHD.
What is attention–deficit/hyperactivity disorder?

We see the child perform poorly in school. We suspect a child as a bad child. But until we identify

drug use, or family drama. WebMD (2015) states, "Diagnosing of ADHD starts after identifying the
symptoms everyday for 6 months or more on children and adults and if the difficulty of the behavior
happens anywhere than the individual should be evaluated as follow: 1. Primarily Inattentive: 2.
Primarily Hyperactive: 3. Combined subtype. Additionally, a full physical exam, vision and hearing
tests are recommended. Also, a noninvasive scan that measures theta and beta brain waves called the
Neuropsychiatric EEG–Based Assessment Aid (NEBA). It has approved by the Food and Drug

I have a 13 year old boy at school by the name of Cory and he is finishing up his 7th grade year.
Cory is a very nice and respectable young man but all year has struggled to stay on task and turn
work assignments in on time. Cory's mother has to come to the school periodically to help him clean
out his locker and at home clean out his back pack to find some of Cory's missing assignments. Cory
has been having a hard time in school with his peers and some of his teachers. His friends thinks that
most of the time Cory is being annoying and his teachers complain that he cannot stay on task, does
not listen and talks too much. The teachers have spoken to Cory's parents on several occasions to try
to come up with solutions to the problem but so far no success with any long term changes. When at
home Cory acts as though he has a million things to do moving around the house, talks to everyone
nonstop but can never seem to just take a break to have quiet time and finish homework etc. It seems
that Cory does not want to listen to his authority figures or just out right does not do what is ask of
him but when it is brought to his attention he is apologetic and acts as though he really did not
remember. According to the symptoms for the DSM 5 Cory definitely meets the criteria for ADHD.
Cory has never had any other issues prior to being diagnosed now and these issues have been going
on for the past 8 months now. The problems in school started when Cory was in the 6th grade

The noon bell rings at an elementary school in the United States. The children walk in a supervised
line from their classrooms to the cafeteria. Their smiles and voices reflect their anticipation and
excitement after a long morning of learning. Once inside the cafeteria, they find their friends, sit
down, and examine their lunches. I hear laughter and the typical lunch trading by those who didn't
get what they expected in their brown bags. In the school office, a short distance from the cafeteria,
a large group of children somberly wait in line for their medication. The school secretary is
dispensing Ritalin. I'm told this medication will help them manage their attention behavior until they
go home. Today there is a great argument regarding the diagnosis and treatment of ADD/ADHD and
who has the right to decide what happens. ADHD, Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, is the
most common neurobehavioral disorder in young children. This is also one of the most common
public health problems that we have today. There is an extreme rise of the prescription medicine
Ritalin that doctors are prescribing to help with this specific type of disorder. Many adults believe
that this medication is a "quick fix" that is not harmful to their children. When Ritalin is prescribed,
it is to be introduced to the body in slow, steady doses, which simulates the brain's natural dopamine
production. Parents of children that are diagnosed or have symptoms of ADHD may be unaware of

The Elimination diet is one way in which ADHD can be treated without the use of medicine in a
relatively affordable way. "An oligoantigenic diet eliminates most known sensitizing food antigens
or allergens(Gordon/Millichap 3)" While this may be inconvenient for an entire household, it is not
impossible essentially if you can afford to feed yourself you can afford to do this(chicken, rice, and
potatoes are all hypoallergenic and inexpensive). Another facet of the natural method is exercise.
The study Adopting an External Focus of Attention Facilitates Motor Learning in Children with
ADHD. In this study children who showed signs of ADHD were divided into two separate groups.
One that partook in outdoor activities followed by learning in a clasroom. And another that only
learned in the classroom. This study showed that the children who partook in the physical education
prior to classroom learning showed increased learning abilities. These two studies into natural
alternatives show that medication is not the only way to alleviate the symptoms of ADHD. That it
can be brought under control in a health way that not only has little to no adverse and unhealthy side
effects. But is also very good for your overall health. The Authorities: For The Diet Factor in

Attention Deficit Hyperactive Disorder – ADHD
When Mrs. Fallon first described this project to us, I was a little bit skeptical about it. I kept thinking
that I had no problems in my life and that I didn't need any type of conditioning. But then I thought,
I'm definitely not perfect and I knew I was definitely overlooking something. Recently I was
diagnosed with ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactive Disorder) and I felt like I was cheated out of
so many years that could have been productive ones. So I decided that for my conditioning project I
would test how much medication I should use that would keep my body stable enough to begin a
sort of healing and moving on process, kind of like a second chance. After I finished my

As a person interacting with other people from another ethnic background, I never had problems
with other people from different races. I was always known to be a person who gets along with
others. I'm pretty much friends with anyone from any type of race. I don't think that I have been in
forcing other people's behavior. I do think that I have been enforcing habits on other people though.
My smoking cigarettes has giving me a lot of problems. Whenever I used to play sports I would
never ever run out of breath but when I started smoking my body began to slow down a little and
would run out of breath. I don't think that there is anyway I will be able to get rid of this problem
anytime soon. I have always been a smoker and I think that once I am a father, I will cut down a lot.
But till then I will continue to smoke. Now that I feel I have been given a second chance there are a
couple bad habits I would like to get rid of in the future. The first one is my laziness. I would really
like to get rid of this curse. I call it a curse because it has been a problem since I started high school.
It has now followed me into college and I hope that with some type of concentration I will be able to
conquer this problem. My second habit is my constantly being distracted when I am learning.
Whenever I am in class, I constantly go into another world and I phase out. But this problem is due
to my ADHD and it took doctors a while to come up with this answer.

"ADHD is a neurological difference that affects learning and language, and every aspect of life"
(Hardman). It has been argued that ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactive Disorder) is not a real
disease, but it has been confirmed by neurological testing that ADHD is a real disease. It has been
found that ADHD symptoms are caused by a child having less brain activity in their frontal lobes;
this part of the brain controls the impulse control which will make it harder for the child to sit still.
There are three symptoms of ADHD: inattention, hyperactivity, and impulsivity. Not every case has
all three symptoms; some can have just one of the three. The most common type of ADHD is a
combination of all three symptoms. Children with the first symptom, inattention, may have the
following behaviors: have a hard time paying attention, be easily distracted from work or play, not
follow through on instructions or finish tasks, and forget things. Children with the second symptom,
hyperactivity, may exhibit the following behaviors: cannot stay seated, squirms and fidgets, talks too
much, and cannot play quietly. Children with the third symptom, impulsivity, may show the
following behaviors: acts and speaks without thinking, has trouble taking turns, cannot wait for
things, and interrupts others. "It has been found that there is a difference in the brain of someone
with ADHD and the brain of someone without ADHD" (Pagan). ADHD can look different in every
child. For one child it can look like

Attention Deficit Hyperactive Disorder Essay
Attention Deficit Hyperactive Disorder (ADHD), is the most common psychiatric disorder among
children today. It's symptoms are not necessarily obvious and start at various times. Some children
give indication of having the disorder before they are born, others are not diagnosed with having it
until their preteen years. ADHD overlaps with several other conditions, further confusing physicians
and mental health professionals who attempt to provide a diagnosis.
Hyperactive children, who are often misdiagnosed as "emotionally disturbed," create a
lot of chaos in the home and at school. The number, severity, and types of symptoms differ from one
child to the next, each of whom show a different pattern ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Surveys employing teacher's and parent's ratings generally find a 10 to 30% number of ADD
children (with or without hyperactivity) in school–age populations.
Many characteristics of ADHD children are socially appropriate and desirable. Their zest,
tirelessness, enthusiasm, intensity, curiosity, and life of the party energy have their useful moments
and serve as social catalysts. Researches believe there is a link between ADHD and giftedness.
ADHD children have rich imaginations and can quickly generate new and different ideas. They also
seem to be aware of sensations that others miss. They can combine unrelated ideas in ways so their
art productions and written compositions show a special measure of creativity. When ADHD
children are treated biochemically, these personal expressions display even greater variety, depth,
and attention to detail. Some of the most creative people in history, including Thomas Edison, had
this disorder.
ADHD is difficult to diagnose because, like all behavior disorders, it tends to appear gradually.
Neurological and physiological studies indicate that ADHD sufferers have a wide range of
biochemical imbalance and uniqueness. Symptoms phase in and out in various settings and change
somewhat from moment to moment. The child often seems mentally alert, smiling, energetic, and

Goodman and Scott (1997) suggest that 'childhood hyperactivity is a high level of behaviour that is
often characterised by lack of control rather than the volume of behaviour.' However, Booton,
Cooper, Easton & Harper (2012) argue that children with hyperactivity are unable to sit still, have
poor concentration and impulsive behaviour. I agree with Booton, Cooper, Easton & Harper (2012)
because these are the challenging characteristics that appear in children who are hyperactive. In
contrast to Goodman and Scott (1997), I believe hyperactivity does not necessarily occur due to lack
of control. There may be high volumes of hyperactivity that can be controlled through behaviour

Their definition includes the symptoms of hyperactivity and ADHD but the distinction between the
two has not been identified. The distinction between ADHD and hyperactivity is that, ADHD is a
neurological developmental disorder which is required to be diagnosed Lauth et al (2006). Whereas
hyperactivity is the regular pattern of inattention, impulsiveness and over activity McLaughlin
(2004) by which diagnosis is not obligatory.
Roger (2003) argues that teachers should develop a personal plan for hyperactive behaviour (HB)
which focuses on academic survival skills and is centred in a supportive one–to–one programme
emphasising positive role play. I believe this (BMS) may not work on all students, for example,
children in Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) (2008). In EYFS (2008) teaching is often done
through play, where the child learns through games and physical activity. At this stage of their
education, they are learning through positive role play. In contrast to Roger (2003), children in
EYFS do not require academic survival skills as they have not been academically prepared for the
future.
Moreover, Leaman (2009) suggests that teachers should encourage children to take responsibility of
their actions by setting up a reward system to motivate children. Bowen, Jensen & Clark (2004)
argue that contingent verbal praise should be associated with the delivery of any tangible or token
reinforcer, then as

What is it? Attention Deficit Hyperactive Disorder is a disorder that occurs in the brain that results
in a lack of attention and an impulse of hyperactivity. This can interfere with the person's
development and functioning. People who suffer from ADHD show patterns of inattention,
impulsivity, and hyperactivity. In children, ADHD is shown to be more common in boys than in
girls. Some studies report a high ratio of boys to girls. The inattentive type of ADHD is found more
commonly in girls than in boys. People who have ADHD as children usually maintain the full
diagnosis into adulthood. Even if they don 't the children will have some residual symptoms of
ADHD as adults. Families who have children with ADHD experience much higher anxiety and
stress levels than families without. Many children will exhibit signs of ADHD by the age of four.
However, most children are not diagnosed until they reaches elementary school. Living with ADHD
can put children put at risk for a host of other problems and complications such as, alcohol and other
drug abuse, completing their education, and an increased risk for delinquency. There has been been
a lot of research on ADHD in recent years and many different types of medications and
interventions have proven to be quite helpful or at least lessen the severity of the symptoms. With

syndrome in which some combination of hyperactivity, impulsivity and difficulty with concentration
or attention is severe enough to cause significant difficulties in a child's life. Many people with this

The scientist used a technique that demonstrated a link between a person's ability to pay continued
attention and the level of activity in the brain. The investigators found important differences
between people who have ADHD and those who don't. In people that have ADHD, the brain areas
that control attention used less glucose, indicating that they were less active. It appears from the
research that a lower level of activity in some parts of the brain may cause inattention" (Matthews,
2002). However, scientist at NIMH and other research institutions did research on why there is less
activity in the areas of the brain that control attention. They were tracking clues to determine what
might prevent nerve cells from forming the proper connections. The factors that they were studying
included drug use during pregnancy, toxins and genetics. Research shows "that a mother's use of
cigarettes, alcohol and other drugs during pregnancy may have damaging effects on the unborn
child's developing brain" (Kustscher, 2014). It appears that alcohol and the nicotine in cigarettes
may distort developing nerve cells. As well as drugs seem to affect the development of normal
development of brain receptors. These parts of the brain cells that are being damaged help to

There are various facets of the ailment that lots of people aren 't even conscious of. ADD/ADHD is a
neurological problem which impacts the CNS, along with the inspirational system. ADD/ADHD
impacts two significant elements of the mind which are linked with all the capability to pay attention
along with the capability to modulate motor action. ADD/ADHD is due to a chemical imbalance in
the mind. There exists a lack in the brains ' capability to make neuro–transmitters. ADD/ADHD is
thought to be hereditary. Though many people consider it one, ADD/ADHD isn 't a learning
disability. ADD/ADHD changes a man 's efficiency in college environment, as well as other aspects
of life too. Relationships with others, how well you arrange your chamber and properties, and the
way you keep track of your financing are several other regions impacted by ADD/ADHD.
Alternately, you might have already been in a position to pay for the outward symptoms of
ADD/ADHD when you 're young, only to run into issues as your obligations increase when you get
older. The more balls you are wanting to keep in the air, pursuing a profession, raising a family,
managing a home, the greater the need on your own skills to arrange, concentrate, and stay
composed. This could be challenging for anybody, but in individuals who have ADD/ADHD, it
might feel utterly hopeless. Quite simply, the patient 's mind is much like a light always going on
and off at the worst possible times.

You have probably heard and may even have used the term hyperactivity. The notion is a modern
one: there were no hyperactive children 50 to 60 years ago. Today, if anything, the term is applied
too often and too widely. The American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry (AACAP)
estimates that all teachers have in their classrooms at least one child with ADHD (Simmons, RG.
1993).
Actually, hyperactivity is not one particular condition: it is "a set of behaviors" such as excessive
restlessness and short attention span that are quantitatively and qualitatively different from those
children of the same sex, mental age, and socioeconomic status (Gutskey, T.R. 1991).

Often has difficulty sustaining attention in tasks or play activities
Often does not seem to listen when spoken to directly
Often does not follow through on instructions and fails to finish schoolwork, chores, or duties in the

Today, more and more kids are unable to focus, whether it is in school, church, or even at home, it is
the same. Some draw on their notes and daydream during discussions. Others spend all their time on
one subject instead of a few. For some, the reasons are simple: Kids get bored easily. This, however,
is only mostly true. Attention Deficit Hyperactive Disorder is a disorder that causes a lack of
attention in those who have it, including adults. Though it is easily spotted in children due to
abundant mounts of energy and a high lack of focus, many adults who have Attention Deficit

Attention Deficit Hyperactive Disorder ( Adhd )
Introduction Attention deficit hyperactive disorder (ADHD), is a neurobehavioral disorder of the
brain. Textbooks typically depict an individual with ADHD as one who is inattentive, highly
distractible, unable to contain stimuli, disorganized and exhibits excessive motor activity (Townsend
& Morgan, 2017, p. 636). It is easy to define a person by their impulsivity; however, it is difficult to
try and understand the reasons behind the behavioral patterns that come along with this disorder.
Blake Taylor, in his book, ADHD & Me, offers a thoughtful insight into the life of an individual
diagnosed with ADHD. Topics he covers are: being distracted, impulsive, disorganized, hyperactive,

Having a brain that is continuously on and working at high speed is one of the strenuous effects of
ADHD. Some may demonstrate this symptom by speaking so quickly it is hard to keep up, or by
pacing across a room (for some, movement benefits the thinking process due to the use of the excess
energy). Racing thoughts leads to a chronic state of mental fatigue, which can result in a physical
tiredness resulting from a decrease in motivation and energy. The combination of exhaustion and
altered thought process leads one to believe that they are less than and incapable of achieving
maximum potential. Often, the tiredness begins to effect elements of the individual's life and leads
to misunderstanding (for example Taylor's low quality work and the inability to follow directions
was misattributed to being lazy or not caring), which is why misinterpretation is one of the
fundamental aspects that contributes to problematic behavioral issues. Literature may touch on the
effects or results of ADHD, but it often lacks the personalized cause that leads to certain behaviors.
By sharing stories about what it is like to actually live with ADHD, it helps give insight into why
one may have behavioral problems are poor social skills and it ultimately adds a humane element to
the black and white symptoms of ADHD. Evidence–Based Treatments and Treatments

more than others. People become distracted do to their intended focus, that stimulates distraction.
Distraction comes from the stimuli in the external environment that stimulates unrelated thoughts to
the activity that someone would be doing at that time. Stimuli is a thing or event that evokes a
specific functional reaction in an organ or tissue. When something distracting is put in front of
someone the stimuli in their head reacts and drives them off task, and start to focus on the object

was originally called hyperkinetic impulse disorder. In the late 1960s the American Psychiatric
Association (APA) recognized ADHD as a mental disorder. ADHD is a neurological disorder that

Hyperactive individuals often appear as if they need to move. They are in almost constant motion,
and frequently make excessive noise. Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder is a prevalent in
today's classrooms. There are many co–existing communication difficulties associated with attention
deficit hyperactivity disorder. In this paper I will discuss the nature of attention deficit hyperactivity
disorder, its common communication characteristics, and the implications of these characteristics
socially, emotionally and academically as well as communication strategies that teachers may use to
ensure that students with this disorder may be included in a regular class setting. Attention Deficit
Hyperactive Disorder has been significantly analyzed for over 100 years, and right up until today,
still remains an quarrelsome and cloudy issue. Be that as it may, in spite of its unascertained causes,
ADHD is out of the blue the most normally broken down psychiatric disease in youths. Five to 10%
of school–aged youngsters are affected by the neurological infirmity, yet there still remains no
question beyond with reference to how decisively the human mind demonstrates this impede. In any

Attention Deficit Hyperactive Disorder Essay
Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is one of the most common childhood disorders
that develops in children and becomes apparent in the preschool, early school years and continue
through adolescence and adulthood. It is one of the rising public health concerns which is
characterized by inappropriate levels of inattention, hyperactivity and impulsivity. The world wide
prevalence rate was estimated as 5.29 %. (Polanczyk 2007). Prevalent rates are higher at 12 years. It
also affects school performance and interpersonal relationship. (Hokenberry 2006).
ADHD affects an estimated 3% to 5% of all school aged children. The ratio of boys to girls ranges
from 3:1 in non clinical settings to 9: 1 in clinical settings. (Gaut and Carlson ... Show more content

The complex etiology of ADHD most likely involves genetic and environmental factors. Studies
have found strong genetic influences and familial transmission. Magnetic Resonance Imaging
studies have identified differences in brain function among ADHD clients. Other factors for ADHD
includes family history of ADHD, Male relatives with antisocial personality disorder or alcoholism,
female relatives with somatisation disorder, lower socioeconomic status, Marital or family discord,
including divorce, neglect, abuse, or parental deprivation, low birth weight and various kinds of
brain insult.
ADHD is a common, highly heritable neurodevelopmental disorder. Rare copy number variations,
such as chromosomal deletions or duplications, have been implicated in ADHD and
neurodevelopmental disorder. ( Jarick 2014) This is most likely associated with abnormalities in
catecholamine's and possibly serotonin metabolism. Having first degree relatives with ADHD have
increased the risk for the disorder by 4 to 6 times that of the general population. Some studies
revealed that alterations in specific areas of brain in individuals have more risk of children with
ADHD. These regions include the prefrontal lobes, basal ganglia, caudate nucleus, globus pallidus,
and cerebellum. Brain image of people with ADHD have suggested decreased metabolism in the
frontal region of brain, which is essential for attention, impulse control, organisation, and sustained

Attention Deficit Hyperactive Disorder (ADHD) has been a diagnosis that has become controversial
over the past few decades, but even more alarming is the treatment used to control this disorder and
the possible lifelong effects this medication might have on them as adults. There is some school of
thought that kids who are prescribed ADHD medications as children could have substance abuse
issues later in life as they have an additional risk of addiction linked to the disorder, not to the
treatment. The stimulant medication utilized to treat ADHD may have some long term effects on the
child's brain by changing the levels of neurotransmitters, the brain adapts to the medication so

To better understand this diagnosis, one needs to fully understand what ADHD means and how it
differs from ADD. ADD is attention deficit disorder, with characteristics of inattention and
impulsivity ("Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) and Attention Deficit Disorder
(ADD)". With ADHD, it is identical to the ADD definition but adds in a good dose of hyperactivity.
Although that definition seems simple, it really does encompass a great deal of conditions that are
significant enough to interrupt normal functioning at home, work or school. Where ADD may have
the individual seeming lost and oblivious or in a dream–like state, just not really caring, ADHD may
have the person completely on the go, unable to sit still, impatient, frenzied, wired and/or seeking
out something that is stimulating. Both of these may appear opposite but the effects are generally the
same: it is difficult to pay attention, even harder to make and maintain friendships, tasks remain
uncompleted, lack of impulse control, things are lost easily and places are left looking haphazard
and disorganized. The adoption of ADD as a clinical diagnosis first happened in 1980, when the
publication of Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders–III by the American
Psychiatric Association first appeared (Lange). In 1987, ADHD became its own diagnosis, instead of

Introduction: History The question of the century is: does Attention Deficit Hyperactive Disorder
(ADHD) even exist? Also, if it does exist, are children being over diagnosed or overmedicated?
Some believe it is a combination of societal changes and outlooks on behavior and some believe it is
due to the booming industry of psychopharmacology and over diagnosis (Hinshaw & Scheffler,
2014). There is no question that this disorder is the number one diagnosis in children today and
many people are questioning the credibility of this phenomena. To fully understand the disorder it is
important to discuss the history, the controversies that pertain to each side, as well as the treatments
that are currently being used today. The recognition of symptoms similar to ADHD have been
prevalent in our society for quite some time. According to the World Federation of ADHD,
symptoms of this disorder were recognized well before the 1900's. The history of recognizing
attention and its effects dates back to the late 1700's when Alexander Critchon, a Scottish Physician,
wrote a book that discussed a topic called mental derangement, which is viewed as a subtype of
what is now called the inattentive type (World Federation of ADHD, 2014). In the 1800's
hyperactivity was recognized in children's books as the fidgety behaviors appearing in fictional
characters, as well as recognizing the over explosiveness of children (World Federation of ADHD,
2014). Then in the 1900's there was a marked

Attention Deficit Hyperactive Disorder: A Case Study
Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a common childhood disorder that can be
treated. ADHD is a hereditary condition. It is unknown exactly how it is passed although it has to do
with the chemicals in the brain. ADHD often occurs along with other behavior disorders like
Oppositional Defiant Disorder (ODD) and Conduct Disorder (CD). There are no special tests to
determine whether or not a child has ADHD (Wender, 2001, p. 6). Diagnosis of ADHD is based on
interviews and rating scales. There are three subtypes of ADHD they are; inattentive type;
hyperactive–impulsive type and the combined type (Wender, 2001, p. 7). To diagnosis ADHD,
doctors follow the standards set forth by the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders,

The most popular stimulant medications are Methylphenidate sold as Ritalin, d–amphetamine sold
as Dexedrine and salts of d– and l–amphetamine sold as Adderall. There are short–acting and long–
acting versions of these medications (Subcommittee on Attention–Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder,
Steering Committee on Quality Improvement and Management, 2011). These medications work
with the neurotransmitters dopamine and norepinephrine, which send the signals to different parts of
the brain to control the symptoms (Branstetter, 2015, p. 183). The most common side effects of
these stimulant medications are food aversion, stomach pain, headaches, and sleep disorders. There
are several different types of non–stimulant medications for ADHD, those are antidepressants, mood
stabilizers and antihypertensives (Subcommittee on Attention–Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder,
Steering Committee on Quality Improvement and Management, 2011). Non–stimulant medication is
generally used if the child cannot tolerate the side effects of the stimulants. Antidepressants and
mood stabilizers, are best used for those children who have a coexisting psychiatric condition.
Antihypertensives are used to reduce the symptoms of hyperactivity and impulsivity in children with
ADHD. Some of the non–stimulant medications can be used in conjunction with a stimulant
medication (Branstetter, 2015, p.

In many social circumstances he was restless, easily agitated and very fidgety. Jason could not pay
attention in the classroom. He was unable to focus properly and it affected his academic work at
school. Jason is diagnosed with Attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder or known as ADHD. It's
relevant to explore symptoms because it's important to evaluate the patient and determine their
proper diagnosis. Every patient deserves a right evaluation to find out their illness. When a complete
evaluation is done, it will determine the illness and the right treatment will be used. III. CASE

more students than ever are being diagnosed with a disorder which makes learning difficult for
them. Dealing with this disorder can be extremely difficult as an educator and a student. One of
many approaches by educators have been the use of out–of–the–box teaching tools such as exercise

Sparks study, using tools to allow creative minds to blossom is something he suggests. According to
a study published in The Journal of Abnormal Child Psychology, by Cory Armes, M.E suggests
hyperactivity may actually help students overcome their attention problems. Running, jumping and
even rolling around in class actually helps an ADHD student concentrate. Most ADHD students
become restless when they are asked to do a task involving the use of the executive functioning of
the brain. Research also shows when students with ADHD were asked to do a task which involved
working with memory and organization, students that were given permission to move or fidget
performed much better than students who were asked to be still. This study proves the ADHD
student's gross motor movements helps them finish intellectual tasks. In essence if a student with
ADHD is allowed to move around and fidget, they will be more successful in their work. What does
this mean to the average student and teacher? Studies have shown to help an ADHD student
succeed, he or she must be allowed to be hyperactive. How does one control this hyperactive
behavior? A wobble chair, an exercise ball as a seat and small fidget devices such as squishy balls,
cubes, and spinners can be used by ADHD students to keep them in their space and be less of a
distraction for others in the class. Allowances are made for children with wheelchairs along with

that is as financially lucrative then the prescription medication industry. New drugs turn up everyday
and claim to treat more and more conditions. On the corner of every block is a pharmacy and their
shelves are stocked with prescription medications and it seems they are here to stay. The question is,
to medicate or not to medicate? Most regularly we turn to prescription drugs for everything from
acne to severe back pain. The condition known as Attention Deficit Hyperactive Disorder (ADHD)

Adding to that difficulty of diagnosis the symptoms of other issues like depression, anxiety, and
different types of learning disabilities are similar. So how do we know if someone is suffering from
ADHD and it is not actually something else? Only Medical Doctors (MD), Nurse Practitioners (NP),
or another licensed mental health professional can diagnose Attention Deficit Hyperactive Disorder
such as Psychiatrists, Clinical psychologist, or Licensed Clinical Social Workers (LCSW). The
American Medical Association (AMA), American Academy of Pediatrics (APP) Guidelines and
Evaluation for the Child with Attention Deficit Hyperactive Disorder are tools used in conjunction
with American Psychiatric Association's (APA) Diagnostic and Statistical Manual–IV (DSM–IV).
The criterion used is specific to appropriately diagnose ADHD ensuring a national standard. During
the medical practitioners evaluation the following are measured against the DSM–IV criteria [but

questions usually follow. How did we get Attention Deficit Hyperactive Disorder? Did I cause it or

Attention–deficit hyperactive disorder is a neuro–behavioral disorder typically seen in children.
Over the past several years' attention–deficit hyperactive disorder seems to be on the rise. Since
2011, eleven percent of children ranging from ages four to seventeen were diagnosed with attention–
deficit hyperactive disorder (Children with ADHD et. Al. 2016). Attention–deficit hyperactive
disorder is a difficult disorder to diagnosis, but once the disorder is diagnosed there are ways to
manage it. There are many different types of treatments that one can do to improve their disorder. A
few of which include, short–acting medicine, extended–release medicine, and essential oils.
Diagnosing One with Attention–Deficit Hyperactive Disorder The process for diagnosing one with
attention–deficit hyperactive disorder is quite complicated. To diagnosis someone, the process
requires different factors and groups of people. When one suspects that a child has this disorder, it is
recommended that a system of contacts be put together with school and other personnel to observe
the child (Wolraich et. Al. 2011). There are a few characteristics that someone with attention deficit
hyperactive disorder typically have. Those qualities include, a persistent pattern of impulsivity,
inattention, and hyperactivity as well as difficulty staying on task, and difficultly staying organized
that affects development and functioning (American Psychiatric Association 90). Not only are these

interrupt or intrude on others, are easily distracted and do not finish tasks [1]. Though, sometimes
some children are misdiagnosed. There are also cases where doctors assume a child has ADHD
when in reality they do not. This essay will cover an experience with a friend who was diagnosed

I believe there is a disorder. Based on the video, I remember hearing Sir Ken Robinson call ADHD a
plague. I honestly disagree. Having ADHD does not make a person any different other than the fact
they just are more hyperactive. I do understand that there are distractions when children are in and
out of school and I think it is more of making the subject interesting to keep students attention.
Some kids just need something to do to keep them distracted. I can admit that I always have to have
music going or the TV on when I am doing homework. When you are in a classroom for an hour or
two, it is very easy to get bored if the professor is not interesting. For example, during my second
year at Cal State Bakersfield, I had a history teach who was so fascinated with slides on the
overheads. She could talk about them forever, and eventually go off topic etc... Though, during those
times when she talked about slides, I began falling asleep or began getting bored, so I would text or
play games on my phone to keep myself awake. Now to get back on topic, people with ADHD are
no different. I can understand that there are medications that can calm a child down, but in all
reality, a proper treatment could be putting that child in an active sport, make them tired so they are
not so hyperactive. This may not be a valid reason why I find ADHD/ADD a real disorder, but this

When people think of attention deficit disorder, they picture an out–of–control kid in constant
motion, bouncing off the walls and disrupting everyone around them. But that is not the only
possible picture. Some children with ADD/ADHD are hyperactive, while others sit quietly, with
their attention miles away. Some put too much focus on a task and have trouble shifting it to
something else. Others are only mildly inattentive, but overly impulsive(Causes). There are three
main characteristics of ADD/ADHD: inattentive, hyperactivity, and Horn 2 impulsivity. The
diagnosed person can have one of these symptoms, or all of these symptoms. They do not have to
have all three characteristics to be considered ADD/ADHD positive(Signs and Symptoms). The first
characteristic is inattentive. It isn't that children with ADD/ADHD can't pay attention: when they're
doing things they enjoy or hearing about topics in which they're interested in, they have no trouble
focusing and staying on task. But when the task is repetitive or boring, they quickly tune out and
lose focus. Staying on track is another common problem. Children with ADD/ADHD often bounce
from task to task without completing any of them, or they skip necessary steps. Organizing
schoolwork and their time is harder for them than it is for most children. Kids with ADD/ADHD
also have trouble concentrating if there are things going on around them. They usually need a calm,
quiet environment in order to stay focused.

Introduction
Attention–deficit/hyperactive disorder (ADHD) has become one of the most commonly diagnosed
mental health disorders in children and adolescent. "ADHD is defined as a chronic condition marked
by persistent inattention, hyperactivity, and sometimes impulsivity." (Disney, 1999) There is concern
about the possible connection between ADHD to substance use and abuse, during childhood and
adolescence, since it is such an important developmental stage in life. "Substance abuse disorder is
defined as a physical dependence, abuse of, and withdrawal from drugs and other substances."
(Biederman, 1999) The prevalence of substance use and substance abuse in recent years is a cause
for concern and has been a matter of public and scientific ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

According to Molina, substance abuse as an adult and how it is directly related to hyperactivity
throughout childhood and adolescence is a topic that there is little literature studies. (2003)
Reasoning behind the lack of information may be because it is harder to find participants to be
involved in a study from time of childhood to time of adulthood. An additional problem with these
studies is these studies are biased. Many of these studies exclude females or they sampled few to
many to analyze them in the whole. There were also too many small samples studied. Sampling few
subjects could generate unreliable information, and could lead to faulty results. There were problems
in measurement in some studies like not specifying certain criteria, and using nonstandard or
untested methods.
There has been substantial growth in the amount of detainees over the years, especially those with
psychiatric disorders such as ADHD and substance abuse disorder. According to Teplin, the
comorbidity of the two give reason to believe that ADHD is a possible predictor of substance abuse
issues. (2002) Studies of hyperactive children have reported that the association between ADHD and
substance use disorders appear to be almost entirely based on conduct disorder. Conduct disorder

Attention–Deficit/Hyperactive Disorder, ADHD, has become a topic of debate amongst
psychologist, and doctors throughout the years. Withstanding its questionable beginnings and
maintaining its place in the DSM–V, ADHD has become one of the most commonly diagnosed
disorders in children today. ADHD is believed to have first been mentioned as a disorder in children
during the early 1900's. It had been described as an "abnormal defect of moral control", a problem
with the child's ability to control their behavior that did not interfere with their intelligence, by Sir
George Still (Holland Web). It was, however, not until the second edition of the DSM that a disorder
resembling today's ADHD diagnosis appeared. "Hyperkinetic reaction of ... Show more content on

A predominantly inattentive child will have a harder time paying attention to detail, completing
tasks, remembering routine and staying focused. A child demonstrating more symptoms of
hyperactivity–impulsive behavior will struggle being still, will be visibly more restless, impatient,
and fidget a lot. If enough symptoms of both types are present, the child can be diagnosed with
combined type (Facts Web). The symptoms of ADHD can change over time, and the presentation of
ADHD a child was diagnosed with can also change. Due to the fluidity of the ADHD diagnosis, the
validity in ADHD's presence has been up for debate. However, ADHD is a neurobiological disorder.
There is proof of its biological origins. Through various imaging studies, researchers have been able
to determine various areas of the brain that are different in children with ADHD. The caudate
nucleus and globus pallidus, areas highly concentrated with DA receptors, the posterior brain, and
areas involved in coordinating activities are all smaller in children with ADHD. Specific genes are
also being identified in association with ADHD, including: mutations in the human thyroid receptor
gene on chromosome 3, DAT on chromosome 5, and DRD4 on chromosome 11. ADHD's
connection to DAT and DRD4 also support findings that deficiency in dopamine lead to a diagnosis

It is estimated that roughly 11% of children and 4.1% of adults are diagnosed with attention–
deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). This is a 40% jump in diagnoses in the past decade.
Stimulants such as amphetamines are prescribed to treat ADHD to increase focus and as college
students are becoming more overwhelmed by workloads, stimulants are becoming very commonly
abused to make it through an all–night study session. Because of this there are several instances of
students exaggerating symptoms in order to receive the prescription they desire to improve in their
classes. Many people believe that ADHD is becoming over diagnosed and in most cases it is simply
kids being kids or stress–induced distractibility. This paper will address the idea presented by Dr.

it is the symptom of various other physiological and psychological disorders that have been

Attention Deficit Hyperactive Disorder and Parenting
'Boisterous', 'energetic', and 'spontaneous' were once adjectives used to describe the behaviour of
normal, healthy children [CITE]. These days, similar behaviours might be labeled 'problematic',
'hyperactive', and 'uncontrollable', often resulting in the diagnosis of attention deficit hyperactivity
disorder (ADHD) and the prescription of a psychostimulant drug [CITE]. According to the DMS–V,
ADHD is described as a combination of "inattention, hyperactivity, and impulsivity" (American
Psychiatric Association, 2013). Due to the nature of the symptoms, ADHD can significantly hinder a
child's ability to succeed in a school setting, both academically and socially, which could have dire
implications for their future [CITE]. With almost 11% of children in the United States currently
diagnosed with the disorder, ADHD has been labeled an epidemic and this has lead to a significant
increase in the amount of research devoted to determining its cause and treatment [CITE]. The
increased attention has also attracted a great deal of controversy, with medical experts questioning
the safety of administering psychostimulant drugs to children. Although the evidence is often
contradictory, due to an increase in the documentation of the adverse side effects in children caused
by psychostimulant medication [CITE] as well as an increase in the evidence of nonpharmacological
treatments successfully reducing the symptoms of ADHD, many parents have become reluctant in

Attention Deficit-Hyperactive Disorder
Attention Deficit–Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), also known as Attention Deficit Disorder
(ADD), is a neurodevelopment,1 psychiatric disorder, which is characterized as impairments of the
growth and development of the Central Nervous System–particularly the brain.2 An individual
diagnosed with ADD exhibits issues with attention, hyperactivity, impulsive behavior, or a
combination of all three. 3 Such symptoms are likely observed between ages 6–12 and must persist
for over six months prior to imposed diagnosis.4 According to the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual
of Mental Disorders, section 4 (DMV– IV), currently 12% of the American pediatric and young
adult populations suffer from one form of ADD.5 Despite ADD prevalence, growing incidence, and
being the most studied and diagnosed psychiatric disorder in the pediatric population –several
unknowns of the complex condition remain. In North America, potential ADHD cases are confirmed
by the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fifth edition, endorsed by the
American Psychiatric Association as a primary resource. The Manual defines and categorizes
ADHD into three subtypes: Attention Deficit–Hyperactivity Disorder, predominantly inattentive
(ADHD–PI),4 and more commonly referred to as Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD). This form of
ADHD is observed in individuals who are easily distracted, continuously daydreaming, severely
disorganized, poor concentration, and considerable difficulty finishing tasks.

What is ADHD? "Attention Deficit Hyperactive Disorder is one of the most common childhood
disorders and can continue through adolescence and adulthood" (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity
Disorder). ADHD in real terms is the inability to focus. Several people have describe people with
ADHD as skirmish, talkative, and have trouble waiting. ADHD has been previously described as
ADD (attention deficit disorder) but the only difference is the "H". This "H" describes how this
disorder deals with hyperactivity, while ADD can be more calm. Effects in Children & Adults
Symptoms that occur in children include low self–esteem, easily distracted, troubled relationships,
poor accomplishments in school, unnecessary talking, trouble waiting, and others. Many of these
symptoms can be outgrown; although, many kids have ADHD their whole life (Attention–
deficit/hyperactivity disorder in children). If these symptoms are seen in children and have occurred
many times, the child should get tested for ADHD. However, take into consideration that kids have
tons of energy and get moody when tired so if these symptoms have been seen only a few times wait
for more instances. More importantly, it is not just in little children because it can also be recognised
in teens. If there is a suspicion that a teen has ADHD more attention should be put on them for

Living With Attention Deficit Hyperactive Disorder

  • 1. Living With Attention Deficit Hyperactive Disorder I. Introduction Living with Attention Deficit Hyperactive Disorder is one of the hardest challenges I have ever faced. Having been diagnosed at the age of seven, it is the most prevalent thing in my life. ADHD is the most commonly diagnosed psychological disorder in the United States (Hughes). It is a persistent disorder, often prevalent through adolescence and adulthood. Most individuals diagnosed are between the ages of seven and nine, although there have been numerous cases where individuals have been diagnosed in their later years. Case studies show that males are four times more likely to be diagnosed/affected with ADHD, and lately, studies have shown an unexplained increase in the number of diagnoses made in children. It has been recognized that in the past, people have scoffed at the diagnosis of ADHD, and even disregarding and bashing the disorder, calling it things like, "a real medical hoax"(Citation). These individuals, however, are severely misguided, seeing as though ADHD is a real disorder, and it affects millions of people worldwide in present day. There have been neurological studies studying and showing that ADHD is, in fact, neurologically related, and it is most likely caused by chemical imbalances in individual's brains (Citation). One greatly debated question in the world of Attention Deficit Hyperactive Disorder is, "Can an individual that was diagnosed with ADHD eventually outgrow it?" One side of this argument states that an individual that has been ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 5. Attention Deficit/Hyperactive Disorder (ADHD) It is very hard and troubling for those that are always in trouble in school, at home and run in with the law. Through research and parents report on their child's disruptive behavior, medical profession put a tag on this troubling disorder as attention–deficit/hyperactivity impulsivity disorder (ADHD). Therefore, I will describe attention–deficit/hyperactivity disorder, describe the prevalence of ADHD, outline methods or strategies that address ADHD, and describe the identification and the assessment process of ADHD. What is attention–deficit/hyperactivity disorder? National Institute of Mental Health (2016) states, attention–deficit/hyperactivity disorder is a disorder in the brain with set–up of nervous and disruptive behaviors that ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... We see the child perform poorly in school. We suspect a child as a bad child. But until we identify and assess the inappropriate behavior we will never have an answer. ADHD Institute (2016) states, "Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders – 5th edition or International Classification of Mental and Behavioral Disorders –10th revision classification system outline steps of assessment before regular testing on symptoms by a physician. Hallowell (2009) states, "The validity of the test is observation and consideration of difficulties that comes or happens with ADD such as withdrawal, drug use, or family drama. WebMD (2015) states, "Diagnosing of ADHD starts after identifying the symptoms everyday for 6 months or more on children and adults and if the difficulty of the behavior happens anywhere than the individual should be evaluated as follow: 1. Primarily Inattentive: 2. Primarily Hyperactive: 3. Combined subtype. Additionally, a full physical exam, vision and hearing tests are recommended. Also, a noninvasive scan that measures theta and beta brain waves called the Neuropsychiatric EEG–Based Assessment Aid (NEBA). It has approved by the Food and Drug Administration with recommendation of a complete medical and psychological exam for age 6 to 17. • 9. Attention Deficit Hyperactive Disorder I have a 13 year old boy at school by the name of Cory and he is finishing up his 7th grade year. Cory is a very nice and respectable young man but all year has struggled to stay on task and turn work assignments in on time. Cory's mother has to come to the school periodically to help him clean out his locker and at home clean out his back pack to find some of Cory's missing assignments. Cory has been having a hard time in school with his peers and some of his teachers. His friends thinks that most of the time Cory is being annoying and his teachers complain that he cannot stay on task, does not listen and talks too much. The teachers have spoken to Cory's parents on several occasions to try to come up with solutions to the problem but so far no success with any long term changes. When at home Cory acts as though he has a million things to do moving around the house, talks to everyone nonstop but can never seem to just take a break to have quiet time and finish homework etc. It seems that Cory does not want to listen to his authority figures or just out right does not do what is ask of him but when it is brought to his attention he is apologetic and acts as though he really did not remember. According to the symptoms for the DSM 5 Cory definitely meets the criteria for ADHD. Cory has never had any other issues prior to being diagnosed now and these issues have been going on for the past 8 months now. The problems in school started when Cory was in the 6th grade ... • 13. Attention Deficit Hyperactive Disorder The noon bell rings at an elementary school in the United States. The children walk in a supervised line from their classrooms to the cafeteria. Their smiles and voices reflect their anticipation and excitement after a long morning of learning. Once inside the cafeteria, they find their friends, sit down, and examine their lunches. I hear laughter and the typical lunch trading by those who didn't get what they expected in their brown bags. In the school office, a short distance from the cafeteria, a large group of children somberly wait in line for their medication. The school secretary is dispensing Ritalin. I'm told this medication will help them manage their attention behavior until they go home. Today there is a great argument regarding the diagnosis and treatment of ADD/ADHD and who has the right to decide what happens. ADHD, Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, is the most common neurobehavioral disorder in young children. This is also one of the most common public health problems that we have today. There is an extreme rise of the prescription medicine Ritalin that doctors are prescribing to help with this specific type of disorder. Many adults believe that this medication is a "quick fix" that is not harmful to their children. When Ritalin is prescribed, it is to be introduced to the body in slow, steady doses, which simulates the brain's natural dopamine production. Parents of children that are diagnosed or have symptoms of ADHD may be unaware of recent ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

"According to the American Psychiatric Association (2009), attention–deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is one of the most common mental disorders in school–aged children(Saemi 179)".While the initial response to handling the syndrome is to medicate it and continually medicate to stem the Simpsons. This is not a temporary instance to cure the disease just a never ending cycle. It is my belief that not only is the medication over prescribed, but the alternative methods are to quickly overlooked. To clarify, I do not argue that the medication is uncalled for and should be removed. Only that everyone who has the condition should be ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The Elimination diet is one way in which ADHD can be treated without the use of medicine in a relatively affordable way. "An oligoantigenic diet eliminates most known sensitizing food antigens or allergens(Gordon/Millichap 3)" While this may be inconvenient for an entire household, it is not impossible essentially if you can afford to feed yourself you can afford to do this(chicken, rice, and potatoes are all hypoallergenic and inexpensive). Another facet of the natural method is exercise. The study Adopting an External Focus of Attention Facilitates Motor Learning in Children with ADHD. In this study children who showed signs of ADHD were divided into two separate groups. One that partook in outdoor activities followed by learning in a clasroom. And another that only learned in the classroom. This study showed that the children who partook in the physical education prior to classroom learning showed increased learning abilities. These two studies into natural alternatives show that medication is not the only way to alleviate the symptoms of ADHD. That it can be brought under control in a health way that not only has little to no adverse and unhealthy side effects. But is also very good for your overall health. • 21. Essay on Attention Deficit Hyperactive Disorder Attention Deficit Hyperactive Disorder – ADHD When Mrs. Fallon first described this project to us, I was a little bit skeptical about it. I kept thinking that I had no problems in my life and that I didn't need any type of conditioning. But then I thought, I'm definitely not perfect and I knew I was definitely overlooking something. Recently I was diagnosed with ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactive Disorder) and I felt like I was cheated out of so many years that could have been productive ones. So I decided that for my conditioning project I would test how much medication I should use that would keep my body stable enough to begin a sort of healing and moving on process, kind of like a second chance. After I finished my conditioning I ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... As a person interacting with other people from another ethnic background, I never had problems with other people from different races. I was always known to be a person who gets along with others. I'm pretty much friends with anyone from any type of race. I don't think that I have been in forcing other people's behavior. I do think that I have been enforcing habits on other people though. My smoking cigarettes has giving me a lot of problems. Whenever I used to play sports I would never ever run out of breath but when I started smoking my body began to slow down a little and would run out of breath. I don't think that there is anyway I will be able to get rid of this problem anytime soon. I have always been a smoker and I think that once I am a father, I will cut down a lot. But till then I will continue to smoke. Now that I feel I have been given a second chance there are a couple bad habits I would like to get rid of in the future. The first one is my laziness. I would really like to get rid of this curse. I call it a curse because it has been a problem since I started high school. It has now followed me into college and I hope that with some type of concentration I will be able to conquer this problem. My second habit is my constantly being distracted when I am learning. Whenever I am in class, I constantly go into another world and I phase out. But this problem is due to my ADHD and it took doctors a while to come up with this answer. ... • 25. Attention Deficit Hyperactive Disorder ( Adhd ) "ADHD is a neurological difference that affects learning and language, and every aspect of life" (Hardman). It has been argued that ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactive Disorder) is not a real disease, but it has been confirmed by neurological testing that ADHD is a real disease. It has been found that ADHD symptoms are caused by a child having less brain activity in their frontal lobes; this part of the brain controls the impulse control which will make it harder for the child to sit still. There are three symptoms of ADHD: inattention, hyperactivity, and impulsivity. Not every case has all three symptoms; some can have just one of the three. The most common type of ADHD is a combination of all three symptoms. Children with the first symptom, inattention, may have the following behaviors: have a hard time paying attention, be easily distracted from work or play, not follow through on instructions or finish tasks, and forget things. • 29. Attention Deficit Hyperactive Disorder Essay Attention Deficit Hyperactive Disorder (ADHD), is the most common psychiatric disorder among children today. It's symptoms are not necessarily obvious and start at various times. Some children give indication of having the disorder before they are born, others are not diagnosed with having it until their preteen years. ADHD overlaps with several other conditions, further confusing physicians and mental health professionals who attempt to provide a diagnosis. Hyperactive children, who are often misdiagnosed as "emotionally disturbed," create a lot of chaos in the home and at school. The number, severity, and types of symptoms differ from one child to the next, each of whom show a different pattern ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Surveys employing teacher's and parent's ratings generally find a 10 to 30% number of ADD children (with or without hyperactivity) in school–age populations. Many characteristics of ADHD children are socially appropriate and desirable. Their zest, tirelessness, enthusiasm, intensity, curiosity, and life of the party energy have their useful moments and serve as social catalysts. Researches believe there is a link between ADHD and giftedness. ADHD children have rich imaginations and can quickly generate new and different ideas. They also seem to be aware of sensations that others miss. They can combine unrelated ideas in ways so their art productions and written compositions show a special measure of creativity. When ADHD children are treated biochemically, these personal expressions display even greater variety, depth, and attention to detail. Some of the most creative people in history, including Thomas Edison, had this disorder. ADHD is difficult to diagnose because, like all behavior disorders, it tends to appear gradually. Neurological and physiological studies indicate that ADHD sufferers have a wide range of biochemical imbalance and uniqueness. Symptoms phase in and out in various settings and change somewhat from moment to moment. The child often seems mentally alert, smiling, energetic, and ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

I agree with Booton, Cooper, Easton & Harper (2012) because these are the challenging characteristics that appear in children who are hyperactive. In EYFS (2008) teaching is often done through play, where the child learns through games and physical activity. At this stage of their education, they are learning through positive role play. In contrast to Roger (2003), children in EYFS do not require academic survival skills as they have not been academically prepared for the future. Moreover, Leaman (2009) suggests that teachers should encourage children to take responsibility of their actions by setting up a reward system to motivate children. Attention Deficit Hyperactive Disorder is a disorder that occurs in the brain that results in a lack of attention and an impulse of hyperactivity. This can interfere with the person's development and functioning. People who suffer from ADHD show patterns of inattention, impulsivity, and hyperactivity. In children, ADHD is shown to be more common in boys than in girls. Some studies report a high ratio of boys to girls. The inattentive type of ADHD is found more commonly in girls than in boys. People who have ADHD as children usually maintain the full diagnosis into adulthood. Even if they don 't the children will have some residual symptoms of ADHD as adults. Families who have children with ADHD experience much higher anxiety and stress levels than families without. Many children will exhibit signs of ADHD by the age of four. However, most children are not diagnosed until they reaches elementary school. Living with ADHD can put children put at risk for a host of other problems and complications such as, alcohol and other drug abuse, completing their education, and an increased risk for delinquency. However, scientist at NIMH and other research institutions did research on why there is less activity in the areas of the brain that control attention. They were tracking clues to determine what might prevent nerve cells from forming the proper connections. The factors that they were studying included drug use during pregnancy, toxins and genetics. Research shows "that a mother's use of cigarettes, alcohol and other drugs during pregnancy may have damaging effects on the unborn child's developing brain" (Kustscher, 2014). The notion is a modern one: there were no hyperactive children 50 to 60 years ago. Today, if anything, the term is applied too often and too widely. The American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry (AACAP) estimates that all teachers have in their classrooms at least one child with ADHD (Simmons, RG. 1993). Actually, hyperactivity is not one particular condition: it is "a set of behaviors" such as excessive restlessness and short attention span that are quantitatively and qualitatively different from those children of the same sex, mental age, and socioeconomic status (Gutskey, T.R. 1991). Textbooks typically depict an individual with ADHD as one who is inattentive, highly distractible, unable to contain stimuli, disorganized and exhibits excessive motor activity (Townsend & Morgan, 2017, p. 636). It is easy to define a person by their impulsivity; however, it is difficult to try and understand the reasons behind the behavioral patterns that come along with this disorder. Having a brain that is continuously on and working at high speed is one of the strenuous effects of ADHD. Some may demonstrate this symptom by speaking so quickly it is hard to keep up, or by pacing across a room (for some, movement benefits the thinking process due to the use of the excess energy). Racing thoughts leads to a chronic state of mental fatigue, which can result in a physical tiredness resulting from a decrease in motivation and energy. The combination of exhaustion and altered thought process leads one to believe that they are less than and incapable of achieving maximum potential. Often, the tiredness begins to effect elements of the individual's life and leads to misunderstanding (for example Taylor's low quality work and the inability to follow directions was misattributed to being lazy or not caring), which is why misinterpretation is one of the fundamental aspects that contributes to problematic behavioral issues. Literature may touch on the effects or results of ADHD, but it often lacks the personalized cause that leads to certain behaviors. By sharing stories about what it is like to actually live with ADHD, it helps give insight into why one may have behavioral problems are poor social skills and it ultimately adds a humane element to the black and white symptoms of ADHD. ADD is attention deficit disorder, with characteristics of inattention and impulsivity ("Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) and Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD)". With ADHD, it is identical to the ADD definition but adds in a good dose of hyperactivity. Although that definition seems simple, it really does encompass a great deal of conditions that are significant enough to interrupt normal functioning at home, work or school. Where ADD may have the individual seeming lost and oblivious or in a dream–like state, just not really caring, ADHD may have the person completely on the go, unable to sit still, impatient, frenzied, wired and/or seeking out something that is stimulating. Both of these may appear opposite but the effects are generally the same: it is difficult to pay attention, even harder to make and maintain friendships, tasks remain uncompleted, lack of impulse control, things are lost easily and places are left looking haphazard and disorganized. • 91. Attention Deficit Hyperactive Disorder ( Adhd ) Introduction: History The question of the century is: does Attention Deficit Hyperactive Disorder (ADHD) even exist? Also, if it does exist, are children being over diagnosed or overmedicated? Some believe it is a combination of societal changes and outlooks on behavior and some believe it is due to the booming industry of psychopharmacology and over diagnosis (Hinshaw & Scheffler, 2014). There is no question that this disorder is the number one diagnosis in children today and many people are questioning the credibility of this phenomena. To fully understand the disorder it is important to discuss the history, the controversies that pertain to each side, as well as the treatments that are currently being used today. The recognition of symptoms similar to ADHD have been prevalent in our society for quite some time. According to the World Federation of ADHD, symptoms of this disorder were recognized well before the 1900's. The history of recognizing attention and its effects dates back to the late 1700's when Alexander Critchon, a Scottish Physician, wrote a book that discussed a topic called mental derangement, which is viewed as a subtype of what is now called the inattentive type (World Federation of ADHD, 2014). In the 1800's hyperactivity was recognized in children's books as the fidgety behaviors appearing in fictional characters, as well as recognizing the over explosiveness of children (World Federation of ADHD, 2014). According to The Center for Disease Control (CDC), this means more students than ever are being diagnosed with a disorder which makes learning difficult for them. Dealing with this disorder can be extremely difficult as an educator and a student. One of many approaches by educators have been the use of out–of–the–box teaching tools such as exercise balls. Seasoned teachers relying on years of experience will sometimes disregard the realities of ADHD. Most feel they understand what is going on in ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Sparks study, using tools to allow creative minds to blossom is something he suggests. According to a study published in The Journal of Abnormal Child Psychology, by Cory Armes, M.E suggests hyperactivity may actually help students overcome their attention problems. Running, jumping and even rolling around in class actually helps an ADHD student concentrate. Most ADHD students become restless when they are asked to do a task involving the use of the executive functioning of the brain. Research also shows when students with ADHD were asked to do a task which involved working with memory and organization, students that were given permission to move or fidget performed much better than students who were asked to be still. This study proves the ADHD student's gross motor movements helps them finish intellectual tasks. In essence if a student with ADHD is allowed to move around and fidget, they will be more successful in their work. What does this mean to the average student and teacher? Studies have shown to help an ADHD student succeed, he or she must be allowed to be hyperactive. How does one control this hyperactive behavior? A wobble chair, an exercise ball as a seat and small fidget devices such as squishy balls, cubes, and spinners can be used by ADHD students to keep them in their space and be less of a distraction for others in the class. • 107. Attention Deficit Hyperactive Disorder: To Medicate or Not... The medical world has seen many changes and advances over the last century, but possibly none that is as financially lucrative then the prescription medication industry. New drugs turn up everyday and claim to treat more and more conditions. On the corner of every block is a pharmacy and their shelves are stocked with prescription medications and it seems they are here to stay. The question is, to medicate or not to medicate? Most regularly we turn to prescription drugs for everything from acne to severe back pain. The condition known as Attention Deficit Hyperactive Disorder (ADHD) is no different. ADHD is a behavioral disorder commonly diagnosed in school–aged children ages 5–17 years old about 8% to 10% of that population ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Adding to that difficulty of diagnosis the symptoms of other issues like depression, anxiety, and different types of learning disabilities are similar. So how do we know if someone is suffering from ADHD and it is not actually something else? Only Medical Doctors (MD), Nurse Practitioners (NP), or another licensed mental health professional can diagnose Attention Deficit Hyperactive Disorder such as Psychiatrists, Clinical psychologist, or Licensed Clinical Social Workers (LCSW). The American Medical Association (AMA), American Academy of Pediatrics (APP) Guidelines and Evaluation for the Child with Attention Deficit Hyperactive Disorder are tools used in conjunction with American Psychiatric Association's (APA) Diagnostic and Statistical Manual–IV (DSM–IV). The criterion used is specific to appropriately diagnose ADHD ensuring a national standard. During the medical practitioners evaluation the following are measured against the DSM–IV criteria [but are not limited to], age symptoms began, length of symptoms, occurrence of symptoms in multiple settings etc (cdc.gov). Once a person or their loved one is diagnosed with ADHD, the following questions usually follow. How did we get Attention Deficit Hyperactive Disorder? Did I cause it or was I born with it? Can cure it? Unfortunately, the causes and risks for Attention Deficit Hyperactive Disorder are not clear. • 111. Attention Deficit Hyperactive Disorder ( Adhd ) Essay Attention–deficit hyperactive disorder is a neuro–behavioral disorder typically seen in children. Over the past several years' attention–deficit hyperactive disorder seems to be on the rise. Since 2011, eleven percent of children ranging from ages four to seventeen were diagnosed with attention– deficit hyperactive disorder (Children with ADHD et. Al. 2016). Attention–deficit hyperactive disorder is a difficult disorder to diagnosis, but once the disorder is diagnosed there are ways to manage it. There are many different types of treatments that one can do to improve their disorder. A few of which include, short–acting medicine, extended–release medicine, and essential oils. Diagnosing One with Attention–Deficit Hyperactive Disorder The process for diagnosing one with attention–deficit hyperactive disorder is quite complicated. To diagnosis someone, the process requires different factors and groups of people. When one suspects that a child has this disorder, it is recommended that a system of contacts be put together with school and other personnel to observe the child (Wolraich et. Al. 2011). There are a few characteristics that someone with attention deficit hyperactive disorder typically have. Those qualities include, a persistent pattern of impulsivity, inattention, and hyperactivity as well as difficulty staying on task, and difficultly staying organized that affects development and functioning (American Psychiatric Association 90). Children with ADHD/ADD usually are in constant motion squirm and fidget, do not seem to listen, have trouble playing quietly, often talk excessively, interrupt or intrude on others, are easily distracted and do not finish tasks [1]. Though, sometimes some children are misdiagnosed. There are also cases where doctors assume a child has ADHD when in reality they do not. Based on the video, I remember hearing Sir Ken Robinson call ADHD a plague. I honestly disagree. Having ADHD does not make a person any different other than the fact they just are more hyperactive. I do understand that there are distractions when children are in and out of school and I think it is more of making the subject interesting to keep students attention. Some kids just need something to do to keep them distracted. I can admit that I always have to have music going or the TV on when I am doing homework. When you are in a classroom for an hour or two, it is very easy to get bored if the professor is not interesting. For example, during my second year at Cal State Bakersfield, I had a history teach who was so fascinated with slides on the overheads. She could talk about them forever, and eventually go off topic etc... Though, during those times when she talked about slides, I began falling asleep or began getting bored, so I would text or play games on my phone to keep myself awake. Now to get back on topic, people with ADHD are no different. I can understand that there are medications that can calm a child down, but in all reality, a proper treatment could be putting that child in an active sport, make them tired so they are not so hyperactive. This may not be a valid reason why I find ADHD/ADD a real disorder, but this is my opinion of what I thought of the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

When people think of attention deficit disorder, they picture an out–of–control kid in constant motion, bouncing off the walls and disrupting everyone around them. But that is not the only possible picture. Some children with ADD/ADHD are hyperactive, while others sit quietly, with their attention miles away. Some put too much focus on a task and have trouble shifting it to something else. Others are only mildly inattentive, but overly impulsive(Causes). There are three main characteristics of ADD/ADHD: inattentive, hyperactivity, and Horn 2 impulsivity. The diagnosed person can have one of these symptoms, or all of these symptoms. They do not have to have all three characteristics to be considered ADD/ADHD positive(Signs and Symptoms). The first characteristic is inattentive. It isn't that children with ADD/ADHD can't pay attention: when they're doing things they enjoy or hearing about topics in which they're interested in, they have no trouble focusing and staying on task. But when the task is repetitive or boring, they quickly tune out and lose focus. Staying on track is another common problem. Children with ADD/ADHD often bounce from task to task without completing any of them, or they skip necessary steps. Organizing schoolwork and their time is harder for them than it is for most children. Kids with ADD/ADHD also have trouble concentrating if there are things going on around them. They usually need a calm, quiet environment in order to stay focused. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Some students crack under the pressure and believe that there is just not enough time in the day to complete everything they wish to, whether that be studying for exams, or completing assignments. In some cases the condition of procrastination is self–induced but for others the struggle to stay focused is a real medical ordeal. However, given the benefits of the stimulant many disregard the risk factors associated with the drug itself, a rise in abuse is just one concern when discussing the use of stimulants. "ADHD is defined as a chronic condition marked by persistent inattention, hyperactivity, and sometimes impulsivity." (Disney, 1999) There is concern about the possible connection between ADHD to substance use and abuse, during childhood and adolescence, since it is such an important developmental stage in life. Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... According to Molina, substance abuse as an adult and how it is directly related to hyperactivity throughout childhood and adolescence is a topic that there is little literature studies. (2003) Reasoning behind the lack of information may be because it is harder to find participants to be involved in a study from time of childhood to time of adulthood. An additional problem with these studies is these studies are biased. Many of these studies exclude females or they sampled few to many to analyze them in the whole. There were also too many small samples studied. Sampling few subjects could generate unreliable information, and could lead to faulty results. There were problems in measurement in some studies like not specifying certain criteria, and using nonstandard or untested methods. There has been substantial growth in the amount of detainees over the years, especially those with psychiatric disorders such as ADHD and substance abuse disorder. According to Teplin, the comorbidity of the two give reason to believe that ADHD is a possible predictor of substance abuse issues. (2002) Studies of hyperactive children have reported that the association between ADHD and substance use disorders appear to be almost entirely based on conduct disorder. • 135. Attention Deficit / Hyperactive Disorder Attention–Deficit/Hyperactive Disorder, ADHD, has become a topic of debate amongst psychologist, and doctors throughout the years. Withstanding its questionable beginnings and maintaining its place in the DSM–V, ADHD has become one of the most commonly diagnosed disorders in children today. ADHD is believed to have first been mentioned as a disorder in children during the early 1900's. It had been described as an "abnormal defect of moral control", a problem with the child's ability to control their behavior that did not interfere with their intelligence, by Sir George Still (Holland Web). It was, however, not until the second edition of the DSM that a disorder resembling today's ADHD diagnosis appeared. "Hyperkinetic reaction of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... A predominantly inattentive child will have a harder time paying attention to detail, completing tasks, remembering routine and staying focused. A child demonstrating more symptoms of hyperactivity–impulsive behavior will struggle being still, will be visibly more restless, impatient, and fidget a lot. If enough symptoms of both types are present, the child can be diagnosed with combined type (Facts Web). The symptoms of ADHD can change over time, and the presentation of ADHD a child was diagnosed with can also change. Due to the fluidity of the ADHD diagnosis, the validity in ADHD's presence has been up for debate. However, ADHD is a neurobiological disorder. There is proof of its biological origins. Through various imaging studies, researchers have been able to determine various areas of the brain that are different in children with ADHD. The caudate nucleus and globus pallidus, areas highly concentrated with DA receptors, the posterior brain, and areas involved in coordinating activities are all smaller in children with ADHD. Specific genes are also being identified in association with ADHD, including: mutations in the human thyroid receptor gene on chromosome 3, DAT on chromosome 5, and DRD4 on chromosome 11. ADHD's connection to DAT and DRD4 also support findings that deficiency in dopamine lead to a diagnosis of ADHD. The non–genetic causes of ADHD are also ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

This is a 40% jump in diagnoses in the past decade. Stimulants such as amphetamines are prescribed to treat ADHD to increase focus and as college students are becoming more overwhelmed by workloads, stimulants are becoming very commonly abused to make it through an all–night study session. Because of this there are several instances of students exaggerating symptoms in order to receive the prescription they desire to improve in their classes. Many people believe that ADHD is becoming over diagnosed and in most cases it is simply kids being kids or stress–induced distractibility. This paper will address the idea presented by Dr. Richard Saul in his book ADHD Does Not Exist that Attention–deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) has become an easy diagnosis with an easy treatment, however ADHD is not the disorder, it is the symptom of various other physiological and psychological disorders that have been misdiagnosed. First, the paper will address the symptoms of ADHD and how they are treated. Second, the relationship between the symptoms of ADHD and the physiological and psychological disorders will be discussed. Third, the paper will focus on the importance of a proper diagnosis and the consequences that can arise from a misdiagnosis and improper treatment. • 143. Attention Deficit Hyperactive Disorder and Parenting 'Boisterous', 'energetic', and 'spontaneous' were once adjectives used to describe the behaviour of normal, healthy children [CITE]. These days, similar behaviours might be labeled 'problematic', 'hyperactive', and 'uncontrollable', often resulting in the diagnosis of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and the prescription of a psychostimulant drug [CITE]. According to the DMS–V, ADHD is described as a combination of "inattention, hyperactivity, and impulsivity" (American Psychiatric Association, 2013). Due to the nature of the symptoms, ADHD can significantly hinder a child's ability to succeed in a school setting, both academically and socially, which could have dire implications for their future [CITE]. With almost 11% of children in the United States currently diagnosed with the disorder, ADHD has been labeled an epidemic and this has lead to a significant increase in the amount of research devoted to determining its cause and treatment [CITE]. The increased attention has also attracted a great deal of controversy, with medical experts questioning the safety of administering psychostimulant drugs to children. Although the evidence is often contradictory, due to an increase in the documentation of the adverse side effects in children caused by psychostimulant medication [CITE] as well as an increase in the evidence of nonpharmacological treatments successfully reducing the symptoms of ADHD, many parents have become reluctant in allowing their children to ... Attention Deficit-Hyperactive Disorder Attention Deficit–Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), also known as Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD), is a neurodevelopment,1 psychiatric disorder, which is characterized as impairments of the growth and development of the Central Nervous System–particularly the brain.2 An individual diagnosed with ADD exhibits issues with attention, hyperactivity, impulsive behavior, or a combination of all three. 3 Such symptoms are likely observed between ages 6–12 and must persist for over six months prior to imposed diagnosis.4 According to the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, section 4 (DMV– IV), currently 12% of the American pediatric and young adult populations suffer from one form of ADD.5 Despite ADD prevalence, growing incidence, and being the most studied and diagnosed psychiatric disorder in the pediatric population –several unknowns of the complex condition remain. In North America, potential ADHD cases are confirmed by the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fifth edition, endorsed by the American Psychiatric Association as a primary resource. The Manual defines and categorizes ADHD into three subtypes: Attention Deficit–Hyperactivity Disorder, predominantly inattentive (ADHD–PI),4 and more commonly referred to as Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD). This form of ADHD is observed in individuals who are easily distracted, continuously daydreaming, severely disorganized, poor concentration, and considerable difficulty finishing tasks. ... "Attention Deficit Hyperactive Disorder is one of the most common childhood disorders and can continue through adolescence and adulthood" (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder). ADHD in real terms is the inability to focus. Several people have describe people with ADHD as skirmish, talkative, and have trouble waiting. ADHD has been previously described as ADD (attention deficit disorder) but the only difference is the "H". This "H" describes how this disorder deals with hyperactivity, while ADD can be more calm. Effects in Children & Adults Symptoms that occur in children include low self–esteem, easily distracted, troubled relationships, poor accomplishments in school, unnecessary talking, trouble waiting, and others. Many of these symptoms can be outgrown; although, many kids have ADHD their whole life (Attention– deficit/hyperactivity disorder in children). If these symptoms are seen in children and have occurred many times, the child should get tested for ADHD. However, take into consideration that kids have tons of energy and get moody when tired so if these symptoms have been seen only a few times wait for more instances. More importantly, it is not just in little children because it can also be recognised in teens. If there is a suspicion that a teen has ADHD more attention should be put on them for "teens with ADHD may also have more problems when they are driving cars.
