1. How to improve productivity Post
Brexit
By Dave Bennion
June 2016 has seen unprecedented change in the UK. Should we stay in or outside of the EU.
Some haled 24 June 2016 as Britain Independence Day while the UK and international stock
markets saw share prices tumble!
British people have decided and Brexit has emerged - not the result that everyone expected
however what is done is done, we have to move on.
I have expressed my passion for a stronger more productive manufacturing base in the UK
through earlier postings and there are some companies seeing growth through tried and tested
models of manufacturing in the UK with great export orders!
If you have a business model which works great please celebrate, however look for ways to
improve, ways to make an even greater product with less waste, less processes, faster and
more efficiently. Its called "Continual Improvement", it is linked to Deming or The Deming
Wheel (PDCA) - Plan Do Check Act! (others as well!)
Look at the processes you have in place, what does it add to the finished product and what
valve does that translate to the customer! Productive configuration (value stream mapping,
spaghetti charts etc) - are all part of Lean Management or Lean Manufacturing - sound
complicated but it doesn't have to be. As a Safety Practitioner - Lean Manufacturing, Safety
and Quality go hand in hand because a well thought out production line will be Safer, more
efficient, produce higher Quality and have less accidents producing a quality finished
product first time round!
Lean Manufacturing in reducing waste has no time for clustered workshops, hoarding waste
time, waste valuable space, creates more error and accidents producing a poor quality product
and more reworks. If you don't need something then "red tag" it and get rid. If you haven't
implemented - adopted 5S principles - see earlier posting. 5S is the starting place towards
Lean Six Sigma.
Remember your experts may be in the office however they are on the shop floor too making
your products day in day out, so speak to them, observe, ask questions, get them involved
otherwise you will not get "buy-in". It is a team effort from the lowest role to the CEO.
Admitted I have brushed across a number of subjects with little detail like:
#healthandsafety #leanmanufacturing #5S #Quality #Waste #Continualimprovement #PDCA
THINK GREAT, BE GREAT, STAY GREAT!
Have a great weekend and stay safe!
