Warm Boot–Using a software command to reboot a system instead of turning the
power on and off. See also Cold Boot.
Winchester Disk–Used to refer to the design and technology of most traditional hard
drives and is a former code name for an early IBM hard disk model.
Windows– Microsoft’s series of operating systems for personal computers. Currently
popular versions are Windows 95 and Windows 98.
Word – Two bytes that are processed together in a single operation.
Workstation–Personal computer with unique performance and capacity capabilities
for mainly use in engineering, audiovisual applications and design demanding
immediate access to ability to manipulate it in effective and sophisticated ways.
Write – The recording of flux reversals onto the magnetic surface of a disk.
Write Cache – High speed RAM used to buffer data transfer from the host to the
hard drive.
Write Verify–After writing data to the disk, this feature will verify if the data just
written can be read to ensure retrieval for a later time. If data reading is
unsuccessful, it is re‐written to another part of the disk where verification is
attempted again.
Wizard‐ A series of dialog boxes that helps the user step by step through a
procedure.
