PRESIDENT RONALD REAGAN’S DOCTRINE
Introduction
The cold war in the US was as a result of the long
struggle for the international or global supremacy. It existed in
the US between the communist Soviet Union against the
Capitalist that is the United States in 1945. The war entailed
technological competition between the western powers and the
communists, economic and political conflicts. The war was
termed as a Cold War because both nations expressed their fight
through nuclear technology, espionage, propaganda, and
coalitions.
Other than Diplomacy, which include negotiations
between two government or ruling powers who come to a
neutral consensus to solve political or economic affairs without
fighting each other. In my paper, I chose to write about Ronald
Reagan who was the 40th U.S President (1981-1989), and this
was the time that his doctrine came into effect during the cold
war. It played an important role in weakening the Soviet Union.
The primary objective of this doctrine was to sponsor anti-
Communist guerrillas who are trying to overthrow pro-Soviet
regimes (Roskin 2018, pg 106).
Summarize a situation that required U.S. diplomatic efforts
during the president’s time in office.
The Reagan doctrine focused on the expansion of his
former leader Carter doctrine. His theory showed an unashamed
support of America in the anti-communist revolution.
Moreover, the principle delivered all its promises to the US
citizens through the help of Afghanistan mujahedeen in
4. overthrowing the Soviet ruling. Later, this combination brought
to an end the occupation of Soviets that were present in
Afghanistan illegally. Ronald had a high opinion on the anti-
communist side a reason that made him join power based on his
standpoint with the political movement in the U.S. During his
term in office he called this move as the Evil Empire in which
he fought to have the U.S policy articulated. It was through
several chains of policymakers under his command with the aim
of returning the U.S policy (Johnsen, 2003).Moreover, Reagan
was focused on the uniting the citizens and returning to each
continent their Soviet aggression. He formed the rollback policy
that was first initiated by Foster Dulles in 1950’s but was not
functional. In his statement, Reagan said that his doctrine
content was determined in reducing the Soviet Union massive
influence across the borders. The overexpansion of the Soviet
Union in the Middle East and Indies became a significant threat
to the U.S presidents in the Cold War as these were areas where
they could extract their oil for the economic market.
Based on the new administration that Reagan formed
he ensured that the staffs maintained a high level of integrity,
togetherness, and trustworthiness at their workplaces. It was to
ensure that they commit themselves to serving the interests of
the U.S allies and the citizens in supporting them resist or
oppose the Soviet initiatives in their motherland (Pach, 2006).
The Insurgents in the war got proffered support by the Reagan
staffs, and when the Soviet questioned on their weapons,
Reagan stated that the tools were made to fight the communist
only to be turned against them to win their sovereignty back
without any physical fights between the two blocks.
Explicate the diplomatic doctrine the president followed,
concerning specific actions or events that occurred.
During the presidency of Reagan, he adequately
criticized the Soviet Union thereby insisting on a military
5. participation and backup. Further, he mentioned in a press
meeting that the Soviet has a lot of immoral behavior as they
cheat and do several offenses to ensure their agenda passed that
will make them remain in power. Some diplomats consider the
Reagan doctrine as an innovation that served his country as well
as Central America in defeating their opponent during a war, for
instance, the revolutionary front of 1979 that was applied in
removing Somoza from power.
The participation of insurgencies from Afghanistan
and receiving assistance from the allies fought hard in
destabilizing the Soviet ruling in the U.S. Ideally, in the
process of the existed cold war the U.S government noticed that
their greatest enemy was the communist Soviet (Schaller, 1994).
It made them have some allies deployed to the remote parts
around the globe in protecting the country. Following the fact
that most nations preferred the communist style of leadership,
the Reagan doctrine among others formed during this regime
hade a lot of significance to the people. For example, removing
the Soviet expansion and Reagan doctrine upon receiving
advisers was effected in 1986 in which it received massive
support to diminish the superpower communist. The principle
won in removing the Soviet Union and the anti-aircrafts used
were reserved to act as a sign of America’s success in history
defeating their communist in the Cold War.
Describe the effects of these diplomatic efforts for the U.S. and
other countries.
President Reagan doctrine was used in many ways
dependable on the local condition of the area. Its
implementation based on military, political, psychological and
economic warfare for assisting the anti-communist allies during
their fight against the enemy. Additionally, the communist
never understood the hidden meaning of the doctrine that was
avoiding a straight intervention of US military in the war.
Preferably, the people that had a great responsibility to the
6. theory were the Afghanistan, Iran and Pakistan that voluntarily
supported the U.S by giving financial support, anti-craft guns
and weapons (Ali &Dong, 2015).
Assess, in conclusion, the advantages, and disadvantages of the
particular doctrine that followed.
In conclusion, the Reagan doctrine successfully gave
the US their diplomacy back after the falling of the Soviet
Union in 1990. In turn, this was again to the US in their
technology industry dealing with the military in fighting a war.
I can state that Reagan was one leader who knew that to defeat
an enemy one must deploy all the skills and knowledge he has
as well listening to his citizens’ ideas. A drawback in this
doctrine was that the policy formed in helping the mujahedeen
le to a slow down as the armed civilians in the US never shared
their interest with the Soviet. Again, when Rumsfeld joined
George Bush in helping Saddam Hussein and using dictatorship
in fighting the Iran’s made the two leaders to be enemies
making the US military to have more powerful weapons

Assignment 2: Current Events and U.S. Diplomacy (REGAN IS
USED FROM FIRST PAPER)
Draw from the information gained in your first research paper
and expand your research to follow up in a new paper. Write
three to four (3-4) new pages that address the following:
1. Define presidential doctrine and summarize the regional or
global events during the Cold War leading up to the formation
of the presidential doctrine you wrote about in Assignment 1.
2. Select one country you wrote about in Assignment 1 and
describe the Cold War relationship that existed between the
country you selected and the U.S. before the presidential
doctrine was announced.
3. Describe the relationship that currently exists between the
U.S. and the country you selected in section (2) above.
4. Describe the effect that the presidential doctrine has had on
regional or global affairs since it was announced during the
Cold War.
5. Assess whether the presidential doctrine you wrote about in
Assignment 1 had had the intended effect of altering the
behavior of the country you selected in section (2) above in the
time since the doctrine was first announced.
6. Cite at least four (4) reputable sources in addition to the
textbook, not including Wikipedia, encyclopedias, or
dictionaries.
To help you understand this assignment further, the following
description and examples may be useful.
8. Step 1: Define a doctrine and identify why a president would
want to announce one. A doctrine is an ideological platform that
a president uses to advance a policy towards a country or region
in order to accomplish foreign policy goals for the United
States, so you will need to expand on this theme.
Refer back to Assignment 1 and build on whatever doctrine you
wrote about then. Say, for example, you selected the Truman
Doctrine. Therefore, this is the only thing you will write about
in Assignment 2 step 1.
Step 2: Select one country you wrote about in Assignment 1 and
describe the Cold War relationship that existed between it and
the U.S. before the presidential doctrine was announced.
In the case of Truman, you would pick either the Soviet Union,
Greece, or Iran, because all three were affected by his doctrine.
If you are writing about the Eisenhower Doctrine, you would
choose Lebanon or Egypt; if you wrote about the Kennedy
Doctrine, you would have write about Cuba or Vietnam; if your
wrote about the Nixon Doctrine, you would choose either
Vietnam, Saudi Arabia, or Iran; if you chose Carter, you would
select either Iran or Afghanistan; and if you wrote about the
Reagan Doctrine, you would select Nicaragua, Angola, Russia,
or Afghanistan (although there were several others).
Step 3: Describe what effect the presidential doctrine you chose
has had on regional or global affairs since it was announced
during the Cold War.
That is, how did the doctrine change the status quo regionally or
globally after it was announced by the U.S.? What happened in
Western Europe after the Truman Doctrine was announced?
What happened in the Middle East after the Eisenhower
Doctrine was announced? What happened with Cuba or
Vietnam after Kennedy offered up his doctrine of flexible
response? What happened in Southeast Asia or the Persian Gulf
after the Nixon Doctrine went in effect? What happened in the
Middle East after the Carter Doctrine was announced? What
happened in Central America or Africa or the Middle East after
Reagan announced his doctrine?
9. Step 4: Refer back to the country you selected in step two and
describe the relationship that currently exists between the U.S.
and that country.
How has the relationship changed between the U.S. and that
country since the doctrine was announced?
Step 5: Evaluate whether the presidential doctrine had had the
intended effect of altering the behavior of the one country you
selected in section (2) above since the doctrine was first
announced.
Your assignment must:
· Be typed, double spaced, using Times New Roman font (size
12), with one-inch margins on all sides; references must follow
APA or school-specific format. Check with your professor for
any additional instructions.
· Include a cover page containing the title of the assignment, the
student’s name, the professor’s name, the course title, and the
date. The cover page and the reference page are not included in
