Opening Sequence Analysis
1. Film Noir Analysis – ‘Moonrise’
The establishing shot shows a dark rainy scene, which opens with a high angle
that focus’ on the men’s legs as they walk, this creates mystery as the men’s faces
are never revealed.
The camera then pans into a long shot of the men’s shadows, this sustains the
mystery of who these men are and what they are doing there, this comes to a
conclusion as a graphic match of a man being hung starts the next scene were a
baby is crying.
The long shot of the group of shadows showing a manbeing hungwill lead onto
the rest of the film consisting of solving that mystery, this isa key convention of
film Noir movies as they usually are based around murder or some death related
incident.
A non-diegetic, minor key symphony plays in sync with the man’s outrage of
attacks, on each hit the symphony spikes in sync with the punches, this adds
more of a more dramatic effect to the force of the punches.
The use of rain shows a key convention of film noir due to it always raining in the
genre. The illusion of a gloomy scene, usually an alleyway, where it is raining is
used to add more of a depressed and dark feeling.
The shadows that cast lines on the walls show another key convention of film
noir, like in most films of the genre, lines are used to captivate the audiences
attention to the fact that it is night time, where dark and mysterious things
happen.
A mid shot shows the body of the guy who has been killed with a rock, this shot
displays a conventional film Noir kill moment, which will then produce the main
theme around the film, murder.
