This document provides information about the Science department course offerings and expectations at the school. It offers:
- Details on the Normal Academic subjects of Combined Science (Chemistry/Physics) and Normal Technical Science, including topics covered and periods per week.
- Explanations of how the science subjects provide foundations for further education options like Junior Colleges, Polytechnics, and ITE in areas like engineering, biomedical sciences, and technology-based courses.
- Guidelines for students on choosing science subjects based on their strengths, interests, and future education plans rather than solely on friends' decisions.
2. What to expect of :What to expect of :
a) 3 Normal (A)
Sci (Chemistry /Physics)
• Study of 2 sciences combined as 1 mark
• Content is ¾ that of pure sciences
• Minimum 4 periods per week per
science.
• Will have to take practical exam in Sec
4E or Sec 5NA.
3. What to expect of :What to expect of :
b) 3 Normal (T) Sci :
• Physics related theme : Gadgets Work
Wonders
• Food Chemistry related theme : Food
Matters
• Biology & Health related theme : Wonders of
My Body
• Topics covered over two years
• 8 periods a week, all theory no practical
exams in Sec 4NT
4. Relevance to Further EducationRelevance to Further Education
a) Junior Colleges
• Better adaptability to the Sciences at H2 level
if pure sciences are offered at ‘O’ levels.
• Taking of sci(phy/chem) will provide foundation
for JC Science as well
b) Polytechnics
• Engineering courses require pupils to take
Physics (pure or sci(phy)
• Biotech or Biomedical courses require
Chemistry (pure or sci(chem) & having Bio is
advantage.
• Offering Sci(Phy/Chem) can meet the criteria
for most courses.
5. Relevance to Further EducationRelevance to Further Education
c) ITE
• Physics based sciences is an advantage
when taking mechanical and engineering
based courses.
• Physics and Chemistry based NT science
will provide foundation if wish to take ‘O’
levels in future
6. GCE ‘O’ LevelGCE ‘O’ Level
Science can be included as a subject in L1

• L1 – EL/ Higher MT
• R1 – Humanities/Higher Art/ Higher Music
• R2 – Maths / ScienceScience
• R3 – Humanities/Higher Art or Music/
Maths / ScienceScience
• R4 – Any ‘O’ level subject
• R5 – Any ‘O’ level subject

8. Please Note :Please Note :
• Find out from seniors about expectations
of course
• Investigate further on what courses /
institutes you wish to go to
• Decide based on your strengths and
interest, and not your friends’ decision.
• Use the choices wisely.
9. Polytechnic CoursesPolytechnic Courses
Science is needed as a subject (R2
subject) for the following courses :
a) Architecture Courses
b) Science – based courses
c) Technology courses
-- the above are 3 out of 4 main schools of
courses available in polytechnics.
