What Literature
(Elective) is all about:
Students offer only Paper 1.
Over two years, students will study one set prose text(Telltale: 11
Short Stories by Gwee Li Sui) as well as a host of literary skills
which will help them understand, critique and respond to the Set
Text and Unseen components of the exam.
Assessment is in the form of passage-based & essay questions.
There will be two sections: Set text and the Unseen
This paper carries a weightage of 50% of the Combined Humanities
mark.
What can you expect
to study:
Students will be required to read the chosen texts with some
guidance providence by the teacher. They will be required to think
about the characters, themes and issues raised by the stories.
Students will be required to display critical thinking skills and a flair
for writing, both of which will be developed through the course of
the two years of study. Students who take on this course of study can
be expected to enjoy seeing the world through different lenses.
Literature is life-changing and students will find themselves more
appreciative and critical of the world they live in. A sharp mind, an
empathetic heart and a generous vocabulary are just some of the
fruits one can expect to harvest from this foray into Literature.
To qualify: Students who score B4 and above with a pass in English in their
Secondary 2E exam qualify for the Literature (elective) in 2014.

Any job that requires deep critical thinking, an open mind, fluency in
writing and eloquence in speech.
Some careers that benefit from a solid Literature education include
English Language and Literature Teacher, Journalist, Writer, Actor
and Lawyer.
