EQUIPMENT AND
FACILITIES IN THE
GOAT PROJECT
1.FEEDING THROUGH
 It is a container for placing the
feeds of the animals.
 It can be constructed along the
alleys or at the side of the house.
 Factors to consider in construction:
Feed wastage minimization and
contamination
Ease in feeding and cleaning the
trough
Provide a feeding space of about 40 cm for each mature animal.
The bottom of the trough should be elevated off the floor to discourage the kids from
jumping into it.
The lower perpendicular side of the trough that will be fastened at the outside of the
wall will have partitions of vertical spacing enough for the goat to put its head
during the feeding.
2.DRINKING TROUGH
Water containers such as
plastic basins, pails or drums
cut into halves can serve the
purpose .
This should be located and
attached outside the pen in
such a way that the water
remains clean ,it is not spilled
and it remains free from
manure or urine
contamination.
3.MOVABLE KID BOX
 It measures 20 cm deep
x30 cm wide x 45 cm
long and can be
constructed and placed
inside the rearing pen.
 This will provide them
from catching
pneumonia especially
during the summer
months.
4.Fodder rack
 It elevates the feeder 1
foot above the floor and
is attached to the goat
shed from the outside.
 It is used for keeping
fodder / silage for the
goats.
 Fodder_____ These are
food given to goats.
5.Mineral box
It is a bamboo tube
with two or more slits
at the bottom to serve
as container for the
ordinary table salt for
the goats to lick on.
6.Hay rack
It serves as storage for
fodder/forage.
It is under a shed adjacent
to the goat shed.
Forages____ These are fresh
grasses given to goats.
7. LOAFING AREA
This area functions as an
exercise lot and an area
for gathering all the
animals in one place
before letting the goats
loose in the pasture or
during the midday break
of herding.
8. ISOLATION / QUARANTINE AREA
 It is necessary that a
separate shelter be
constructed for the isolation
of sick animals.
 This should be located away
from the main goat house to
control the spread of a highly
infectious disease.
 The provision of a footbath
should be located at the
entrance of this facility.
9. FENCING
 Among the animals, goats are
considered the hardest to
confine because they have the
ability to climb and walk on
slopes, hence provision for
fencing is one way
 Of controlling them in the
pasture. The height of the
fence should be at least 1.5
meters to confine the animals
successfully.
 Bamboo slats nailed to wooden
posts at a distance of 0.15
meters or a circulated wire
mesh nailed to wooden posts
make good fences
 Cassava plants also make good
fences. These should be planted
very close to one another .
ACTIVITY 1
DIRECTIONS: Arrange the jumbled letters to
form a word that is being asked in each item.
Write and put the correct word on the space
provided in each number.
Group I Group 3
Group 2 Group 4
ACTIVITY 2
DIRECTIONS: Discuss the function of the following
equipment, materials and facilities in a goat
project.
 Group 1___Feeding trough, drinking trough /
waterer ,kid box
 Group 2___Fodder rack, mineral box ,hay rack
 Group 3___Isoaltion area, Loafing area, Fence
Generalization
1.What are the equipment and facilities in
a goat project?
2.Why are these equipment and facilities
important in a goat project?
THANK YOU!!!
