  • This slide is very important as it explains the definition of a video game in depth1.Video game is when a person uses a controller to play a game on a visual screen such as a computer, television, or portable device.2.The definition of a video game can be different. There is three different factors that would be helpful to know is the conflict, rules, players, and valued outcome.3.There is always a conflict and the player must try to solve the problem.4.The rules is made by the video game designers such as putting boundaries of a map, controlling the player’s movement, and having the buttons assign.5.The player ability is how good the user is in their skills, strategy, or just luck.6.Valued outcome of winning or losing, the game will have a the highest score and the fastest time for accomplishing the task.
  • This slide is important because it has all the elements that contribute to a video game.1. Game mechanics is the rules that is set up in any video game. For example, the different levels, time limit, points, movement of the players, boundaries, and many more. 2. Graphics is the “visual design, color, lighting effects, point of view, character design, and credits. (Wolf 24)3. Programming is a computer language designed to express calculations that can be performed by a machine. (Wolf 23)4. Production Process is the material use in creating a game such as cd-roms and the plastic case for games.5. Audio is the sound effect and soundtrack in video games6. Narrative is the story plot made in the game. These 6 factors are important to know about creating a video game.
  • These genres are the different types of game that is use to make in a game.Racing- “Games in which the objective involves the winning of a race or the covering of more ground than an opponent. (Wolf 271)2. Shooting-”Games involving shooting at, and often destroying, a series of opponents or objects.” (Wolf 272)Commanding- controlling an army or a mass of peopleBuilding- constructions to create an object
  • 1. Collecting- “Games in which the primary objective involves the collecting of objects that do not move, or the surrounding of areas.” (Wolf 264)2. Trading- exchange items or objects in a gameEscaping- “Game whose main objective involves escaping pursuers or getting out of some form of enclosure.” (Wolf 267)Finding- someone or something particular for completing a goal
  • Hiding- Concealing or hiding from your opponentPuzzle-solving- “Games in which the primary conflict is not so much between the player-character and other characters but rather the figuring out of a solution, which often involves solving enigmas, navigation, learning how to use different tools, and the manipulating or reconfiguring of objects.” (Wolf 270)3. Role-playing- “Game in which players create or take on a character with a developed persona that often has a description often including specifics as species, race, gender, and occupation, and may also include various abilities, such as strength and dexterity, to limited degrees usually represented numerically. (Wolf 271)4. Sports- Games which are adaptations of existing sports or variations of them. (Wolf 272)
  • Action- “The player must navigate a game level, collecting objects, avoiding obstacles, and battling enemies with various attacks.” (Kent 473)Adventure- “The player assumes the role in an interactive story that is driven by exploration and puzzle-solving instead of physical challenge” (Kent 187)3. Surviving- “The player must try to live or escape a dangerous situation” (Kent 568)
  • Atari Inc. was a video game and home computer company. It was created by Nolan Bushnell and Ted Dabney. They made the very first coin slot arcade machine for Computer Space in 1971 and Pong in 1972. “The video game industry was born.” (Wolf 28) “Interest flickered at the arcades, and soon the home game industry found itself in the midst of an industry crash, as prices fell and consumer demand waned.” (Wolf 29) However, the Atari Inc. crash in 1984 due because the company was split, and change to Atari Corporation.Nintendo one of the most influential companies in video game. “The crash forced the video game industry to pause and reassess itself, and new technologies were tried at the arcade to attempt to revive business.” (Wolf 29) They were the first to make a color tv game console. They made Donkey Kong, Mario series, pokemon, and more.
  • Sega Enterprise- Development company that makes home computers and console distributor. They made the Sega Saturn, Sega Dreamcast,. They are most famous for creating the Sonic the Hedgedog. Compete online with many people. Comes in different types such as the Arcade and the Elite. It sold over 39 million units worldwide. One of their best selling games are Halo 3, Gears of War 1 and 2, Call of Duty, and Fable 2.
  • In the 70s, arcades machine was a big hit.In 1971, computer Space is the very first arcade video game machine ever.Pong was the first home video game on the “Brown Box” (Demaria and Wilson pg 18)Asteroids was made in 1977. A spacecraft flying around shooting asteroids. 2-d graphics
  • The games in the 80’s became very popular with both arcade and home video game consoles. The program all used 2-d graphic at this time. (Kent 27)Pac-Man started out as arcade game. It is the most famous and successful coin operated machine. Over 300,000 units are sold worldwide. (Kent 27)Defender game is set on a fictional planet where the player must defeat waves of invading aliens while protecting astronauts. Donkey Kong game is a monkey throwing barrels down while Mario has to go up and save the princess. The Pitfall is a maze like game trying to find teasures in the jungleMs. Pac-Man same thing as Pac-manThe Legend of Zelda games feature a mixture of puzzles, action, adventure gameplay, and exploration.Super Mario Bros. 1 and 2 are one of the most recognizable games ever. Mario must rescue the princess from Bowser. Tetris has sold over 100 million. It was created 1984 by AlexeyPajitnov (Demaria and Wilson pg 196).
  • Many companies are competing against each other. Many consoles are released during the 1990’sThe games feature one of their best sellers for their consoles.Super Mario Bros. 3 game is the 3rd series of Super Mario Bros. It has updated features to the game and better graphics than 1 and 2.2-d graphics and were about expansion (Demaria and Wilson pg 243)
  • Worldwide, games are became very popular and the handheld game console came out with a big hit. Graphics improved Each year they always wanted to improve the technology and the game play. Many games are part of a series. Computer games became very popular.“The CD-Rom, in particular, opened a virtual Pandora’s box of good and evil” (Demaria and Wilson pg 243)“Like the CD, and in some even more significant ways, 3D technology radically changed the face of game design and development. (Demaria and Wilson pg 243)
  • People is no longer playing by themselves, you’ll be able to play online now with other people.Video games became more of a interaction than before. The graphics are much better with the state of the art electronic arts. The game consoles have CD and DVD player with the game consoleReleased many new game console. (Kent XVI)
  • Video game has become more active with the WiiWireless PS2 and PS3, Xbox and Xbox 360 released internet service (Kent XVI)Rock Band and Guitar Hero made video games more into musicTechnology is better, and use it to improve games better
  • Increase your motor coordination with video games, a person becomes more interactiveA person playing video games increase your focus and get less distractedUsing technology more than beforeIt is easier for person who plays with video games than a person who doesn’t play with video games with technologyWe learn to adapt thing easierIt increases our long term memory because a person can play a video game for a long time, increasing the memory.“Video games do not really impart a new kind of physical skill; what they impart is the fundamental mental skill, of understanding a complex and autonomous world.” (Espejo 56)“Why is being interactive so important? Because interacting with a complex entity is what life and thinking and creativity and art and science all about. (Espejo 55)
  • Parents, politicians, religious groups, and other groups talk about the content of video games. As video games became better, there are a lot more of content Video games can make a person aggressive with violent video gamesPeople can easily become addictive to video games“violence is stylized, romanticized, and choreographed, it encourages children and adolescents to assume a rhetorical stance that equates violence with style and personal empowerment.” Physicians Jeannie Rosenberg and Joanna (Espejo 7)
  • CliffBleszinski is the lead designer of Gears of War 1 and 2Ed Boon is the co-creator of the Mortal Kombat fighting games seriesIan Cummings designed the Madden NFL series, NCAA Football series with EA sportsStiegHedlund famous for making Diablo 1 and 2, and StarcraftMac Laidlaw is the designer/writer a Valve on the Half-Life games
  • Jordan Mechner worked on Prince of Persia seriesTetsuya Nomura designed Final Fantasy and Kingdom HeartsAlexeyPajitnov is the creator of Tetris (Demaria and Wilson 196)Toru Iwatani is the creator of Pac-Man (Demaria and Wilson 62)Dan Teasdale designed Rock Band
  • Game Maker makes it easier to make computer games for users.A person doesn’t need to take a course of how to use Game MakerThe program and language is already installBuilt-in scripting language for anyone to use(
  • Must first download Game Maker on the computer Click on a new file for your gameCreate setting either draw a setting or find a picture onlineCreate a sprite (character) either draw a sprite or find a picture onlineCreate rule such as boundaries in the game and goal of the gameCharles. "Game Programming tutorial RPG chapter “
  • Fix the errors if the programs show a error in the game Find the spot and fix itUse the dictionary in the program to find the programs neededUse an audio sound to attach to the sprite or settingCharles. "Game Programming tutorial RPG chapter “
  • These are the Game Maker Elements. The first one on the bullet is sprites. Sprites are the essential part of making your own video game. It makes the thing that you want in your game to exist. The second one is sounds. This is making the sounds for an object or sound for an animation. The third is Backgrounds. The image that sets up the setting for the game. The fourth is paths. Have an object follow a route to go on. The fifth one is scripts. Scripts setups a statement that an object will do.http://gamemaker.wikicomplete.infoCharles. "Game Programming tutorial RPG chapter “
  • Fonts are the different sizes and colors of text. The Time Lines have certain things must happen at certain moments in time. The objects in the game interact with sprites. The rooms is where things happen in the game.http://gamemaker.wikicomplete.infoCharles. "Game Programming tutorial RPG chapter “
  • Create towers and enemies using sprites. Enemies go through a route that is made using paths. The goal is to stop the enemies from getting across without losing all your lives. The towers are to attack the enemies. Enemies and towers have certain abilities. Towers will have cost to buy items and upgrades.http://gamemaker.wikicomplete.infoCharles. "Game Programming tutorial RPG chapter “
  • The sprites are computer graphics that is displayed in a game. Small bitmapped images that are moved about the screen by being redrawn at different coordinates are known as sprites. (Wolf 11)A computer graphics entity which is a bitmap that can be moved about the screen and resized, though its surface is always facing the camera. Groups of sprites are used to create larger images and can be moved and resized to give an illusion of depth to a game. (Wolf 315)The sprite are also use for animation. There are several images that would give a sprite an action. When it does the animation, it’s several pictures playing over to make it seem it is doing an action. Create a sprite that it is visual for everyone to see.http://gamemaker.wikicomplete.infoCharles. "Game Programming tutorial RPG chapter “
  • The sounds are played for the sprite to use such as for an action, object, or sprite.Electronic sounds could be generated and repeated by a computer and soon synthesized beeps and boops became the computer-generated soundtracks for video gamesFor example, if you what the sound of a bomb exploding, get the sound of explosion. (Wolf 19)When you obtain the sound, it is also important to time the sound effects. It has to be exact, from start to finish, it can’t be off by a little. When the sound is being used, the sound must be on a time interval. How long the sound is? When the sound should be activated to play? The loop is the sound that is going to play over again. Like the music in the background playing over again.http://gamemaker.wikicomplete.infoCharles. "Game Programming tutorial RPG chapter “
  • The background is used to display the image that was either made or loaded. This image that is used for your game is going to be the map of the game. Early video game graphics, with their points, lines, and blocks of color, often on a black background, coincided with minimalist, abstract styles of art.The background can be any size. (Wolf 19)However, I do recommend that the background should be big enough for you to add sprites and objects, but not too big that it goes over the screen.http://gamemaker.wikicomplete.infoCharles. "Game Programming tutorial RPG chapter “
  • The path is how the background is setup to the game.Have the path set up on a specific map that was made already. The path have grids on the map set up.Can adjust the grids if you want to make it smaller or bigger.Click on the map, and it will give points where to go.It will give the sprites where to go now because the sprites have specific coordinates where to follow.http://gamemaker.wikicomplete.infoCharles. "Game Programming tutorial RPG chapter “
  • The script is to defined the function. If a sprite is made, must tell the program what it is or what it does.Have to tell the program by using GML known as Game Maker Language. The rules must be set up in a game, otherwise it wouldn’t work. There will be flaws if there weren’t any restrictions.A sprite character will go flying out of the computer screen boundaries because there weren’t any restrictions.Need to tell the program very specific things. This enables the objects to execute an action.http://gamemaker.wikicomplete.infoCharles. "Game Programming tutorial RPG chapter “
  • The Fonts are the letter size, style, and color of the text. The font have to be big enough to see, but not too small you can’t see.The letter fonts is important because your presenting your work to everybody. So the color and the size of the letters must be perfect.http://gamemaker.wikicomplete.infoCharles. "Game Programming tutorial RPG chapter “
  • The timelines have events that occur in the game at a certain time. The timelines determines how fast or slow it is going. For example, an object was made such as a bullet.Bullet that destroys the sprite. How fast or slow. do you want the bullet to be going?http://gamemaker.wikicomplete.infoCharles. "Game Programming tutorial RPG chapter “
  • The object is used to create the action of the spriteThe object is the cause and effectFor example, the object can destroy a sprite and make it disappear.Like a tower, a sprite, use arrows, an object, to destroy the monster, another sprite, on the map.The objects is the most important part of the game because it causes change in the game and the program has to know what to do.http://gamemaker.wikicomplete.infoCharles. "Game Programming tutorial RPG chapter “
  • The rooms are where things happen in the gameThe rooms loads up the background that was createdAllow that background to be use for to create a pathUse the room to level up in the gameControl the spaces in the gameThe best way to explain it is you’re in a house, you go into the bedroom and that will be one room. You leave the bedroom and enter the bathroom that would be another room. The rooms are set up so that you have to be at one place at time, you can’t be in the bedroom and the bathroom at the same time.http://gamemaker.wikicomplete.infoCharles. "Game Programming tutorial RPG chapter “
  • Click on the caption that says create sprite.A link will pop upGive it a name for your spriteEither load a picture that was saved or use a sprite that will be created for useAfter the image was either loaded or created, click on the center button. If you centered it, then you can directly click on the sprite used in the game.If it isn’t center, then you won’t be about to click on it in the game. http://gamemaker.wikicomplete.infoCharles. "Game Programming tutorial RPG chapter “
  • To create a background, you can either load a picture from a saved file or create one.In order to create one, make tiles for individual section. Can be up to three different colors in used at onceIt’s like if you were to tile the floors in real life. These two are programs used for colorBackground_color is the background color of the current roomBackground_showcolor is whether to show the background color or not.http://gamemaker.wikicomplete.infoCharles. "Game Programming tutorial RPG chapter “
  • Each room can have eight backgrounds at onceThe background images aren’t sprites so it can do anything that would cause and effectThe background also can’t do collisions because the setting always must be the sameIf you do what to change the image in the background, there is an option that you can do ItIt is called Background_index[] which is displayed backgrounds can be set or changedhttp://gamemaker.wikicomplete.infoCharles. "Game Programming tutorial RPG chapter “
  • The sound is either created or loaded and is savedPut the saved sound into the sound_play() it enables the sound to be played Put the saved sound effect either into sound_play() and Sound_loop()Sound_play() play the sound onceSound_loop() play the sound more than once, repeating over againhttp://gamemaker.wikicomplete.infoCharles. "Game Programming tutorial RPG chapter “
  • Load the saved background to the pathClick on Indicate the room to show as background at the top of Game MakerCreate a path that the sprite must followClick on the grid where to startCreate a path or maze that leads to the endThe first one to click is where to start and the last one to click is where it will endhttp://gamemaker.wikicomplete.infoCharles. "Game Programming tutorial RPG chapter “
  • Create a script, have to have an argument that states something.Like when the monsters health reaches zero, then the monsters is destroyedPut level system so that each level is completed, then it goes higherSet up the saving and loading system of the gameSet up the controls of the game Giving commands for the gamehttp://gamemaker.wikicomplete.infoCharles. "Game Programming tutorial RPG chapter “
  • The timelines give the orders to the gameIt gives an action that the program must doIt is specific orders that will happenIt also determine the how fast or slow the speed is Set up specific programs for the gamehttp://gamemaker.wikicomplete.infoCharles. "Game Programming tutorial RPG chapter “
  • Assigned a sprite to an object that was createdMake a sprite_index specifically for objectsClick createThen click on Draw the event Then finally stepsThen you are able to give specific actions for the object can doDraw_sprite() Point_distance() is the angle between two objects that can be calculatedhttp://gamemaker.wikicomplete.infoCharles. "Game Programming tutorial RPG chapter “
  • Actions- what an object can do when an event happens to itWhen you create an object, load the sprite that was created as your imageCreate things such as walls, enemies, bullets and moreThese objects will have a cause and effect actionInsert programs in the objectshttp://gamemaker.wikicomplete.infoCharles. "Game Programming tutorial RPG chapter “
  • Each room created has its own backgroundThe background_color has the option to change color for the room or have the background imagesThe room_caption allows to make a Game titleAfter that, give it a nameRoom_persistent give each room independentThe size of the room can be any size based on your backgroundhttp://gamemaker.wikicomplete.infoCharles. "Game Programming tutorial RPG chapter “
  • There is an error in sound because the sound doesn’t exist. The sound that you named was probably in the sound_play, but doesn’t existTrying to delete a non-existing pathhttp://gamemaker.wikicomplete.infoCharles. "Game Programming tutorial RPG chapter “
  • When the game is finished, but it doesn’t work, then there is something wrong with the programWhen you press execute to play your game, there is always going to be mistakes that might cause an errorCheck the programs and what went wrongMust always fix the error otherwise won’t be able to play the gamehttp://gamemaker.wikicomplete.infoCharles. "Game Programming tutorial RPG chapter “
  • There is an error in the script part because the argument with the number is wrongThe numbers have to be right to support the functionThe fonts will have an error if your trying to delete a non-existing fonthttp://gamemaker.wikicomplete.infoCharles. "Game Programming tutorial RPG chapter “
  • The timelines error is trying to delete a non-existing timelineThe object error is when your ask to change into a non-existing objectCannot change the object otherwise you will also obtain different actionsMost of the time in my experience, I always have errors with object. When assigning an action to the object, it is needed to state the object http://gamemaker.wikicomplete.infoCharles. "Game Programming tutorial RPG chapter “
  • The room error is when moving to the next roomSet up the program so that the room name is rightMoving to previous room before the first room will have different rooms set up in the gameEnables the player to go room to roomhttp://gamemaker.wikicomplete.infoCharles. "Game Programming tutorial RPG chapter “
  • Developers are the people who design, program and actually make the games.Developers brainstorm what game to make and have certain ideas what to make it goodThen they start making the sprites for the gameThen start programming the system for the gameThe typical size of today’s development teams is usually somewhere between a dozen to a few dozen people working together (Gershenfeld 15)It takes a lot of time to make a game
  • A package of skills that a person or team possesses. A skill set includes anything from knowledge of a particular programming language to the ability to manage people. (Gershenfeld 14)They need to have the knowledge of computer programming languageProgramming language has to be understood by the personThey also have to fix the program and Identify the problemThey also need the skill set to work together with other peopleCombining programs together and make sure the program workThe core skill set of a typical development team is programming, art, design and project management. (Gershenfeld 14)
  • Publishers finance, develop, market, package, manufacture, sell and often distribute games. (Gershenfeld 16)They need to put it on the market effectively, distribute and sell games. After the game is done, have to market the game. Trailers and posters to display the gameGame stores buys the gamePackage the game and distributed all the games Box and Docs is the physical packaging, along with all the materials that go inside the box, including game discs, documentation, game maps and user manuals. (Gershenfeld 17)
