Pop art got its name from Lawrence Alloway, who was a British art critic in 1950's. The name "Pop
Art" reflected on the "familiar imagery of the contemporary urban environment" (kleiner, 981). This
art form was popular for its bold and simple looks plus its bright and vibrant colors. An example of
this type of art is the oil painting done by Andy Warhol, "Marilyn Diptych" (Warhol, Marilyn

William Morris (1834–1896)
William Morris was the main important figure of the Arts and Crafts Movement and one of the most
important and influential designers in British History. In 1861 he started his first company which
produced a wide range of decorative objects for the home including furniture, fabrics, wallpaper and
stained glass. He has combined his artistic skills with strong political beliefs. A committed
conservationist and Socialist, he dedicated his life to the idea that art should improve the lives of
ordinary people.
This was one of his works that he has done. He has used different patterns covering all the
furnishings and the walls. Detailed and elaborated designs were used. In my opinion there are too
much patterns in one room. One pattern will be strong enough to communicate a very good design.
For example the wallpaper will be strong enough, if it was only it, in the room and then the other
furnishings will be picking up colours from it and also using different shades of the colour chosen.

Design movement
A design movement that appealed to me is the Art Deco movement which occurred from 1910 to
1939. This movement appealed to me because it has all elements of different design periods in it,
from technological advances bringing in geometric lines, the aviation world bringing new elements
of design into buildings like the streamlined curves.
Art Deco was not a cheap way of living, bringing the luxury and modernity worlds together, the
craftsmanship together with ivory, diamonds, jade and many other materials made this an expensive
way of living. This period to me was full of elegance and made people really feel the concept of
wanting luxury items which everyone else wanted.
The Chrysler building shows off the Art deco period very well both inside and outside being

These books, with their simplistic two and three word sentences, were widely used to teach all
children how to read and suggested that the lifestyle of Dick and Jane was typical and standard. But,
the Dick and Jane lifestyle was certainly not the typical lifestyle for Claudia, Pecola or either of their
families. So, that lifestyle was presumed to be the typical white lifestyle. Furthermore, the lifestyle
of Dick and Jane was obviously viewed as superior to a sad, broken, difficult family life, similar to

L.H.O.O.Q (fig 3) is a play on the Mona Lisa, crafted in 1919. It is an excellent example of the
mockery to traditional art. The Mona Lisa in his work L.H.O.O.Q. is printed on a postcard, where
then Duchamp drew a mustache and goatee on the painted woman photographed. He then labeled it
L.H.O.O.Q., and it became an iconic piece of Dada work. If someone who is fluent in the French
language and native to the tongue were to pronounce these letters, it would read "Elle a chaud au
cul", which can translate to "She has a hot arse." ("Dada Movement, Artists and Major Works.")
Dada was said to be very anti–art, so by taking a well–known traditional piece from 1517 painted by
Leonardo Da Vinci made a huge statement on how Duchamp was throwing away all traditional
practices of what art was before Dada (Flask).
There are also arguments on what the deeper meaning of the title of the work could be, and how
perhaps Duchamp was attempting to make the Mona Lisa even further androgynous (Jack).
Interestingly, Duchamp revised this piece (fig 4) in 1965, and titled it L.H.O.O.Q. Shaved. The
revision of the work is a white sheet of paper with another photograph that seems to be a playing
card of the Mona Lisa, clean–shaven placed in the middle of the paper, with the title written

mostly on advertisements and news often using the sense of irony. This movement was more of a
cultural revolution using vibrant colors and bold graphics to represent a statement and provide an

Many artistic movements are captivating from the various amounts of depth and insights each one
holds. The artistic movement that caught my attention is the pop art movement. This movement
emerged in the mid 1950's, and was mainly developed in New York. Pop art (which is short for
"popular art") was brought to create new forms of imagery and expressions. It was made by
displaying the popular culture; meaning, the art was created by people of everyday life and popular
objects obtained during this period. Many of these artists pulled away from the traditional art to
focus on the popular culture. This movement also strongly focuses on surrealism, which is a 20th
century movement that sought to release the creative potential of the unconscious mind. Pop art

Mechanised Colour Assemblage, the name of the display, shares the same abbreviation of MCA with
Museum of Contemporary Art. The MCA facade is transformed into a series of sound and colour
'machines' that create a continuously morphing listening and viewing experience. The audience is
plunged into a universe where voices and colours blend together to become a single element. The
machines change colour and shape, drawing on a variety of phenomena entering the space around
the MCA. In response to sound they form new surfaces – sometimes soft, sometimes hard. In
collaboration with artists and kinetic sculptors, he is able to bring paper, smoke, confetti and tinsel
to life using mechanisms such as flip–clocks, fans, and detonators. Her interest in colour and its

Marcel Duchamp was born in the Upper Normandy region of France to Eugene and Lucie Duchamp
on July 28, 1887. His family was an incredibly cultured one. Aside from the art of painter and
engraver Emile Nicolle filling the house, the family enjoyed playing chess, reading books, painting
and making music together. Four out of his seven brothers and sisters actually became successful
artists. At 8, Duchamp followed in his brothers' footsteps and left home to begin schooling at the
Lycée Pierre–Corneille a school run by Jesuits to educate children of the aristocracy and
bourgeoisie. Duchamp attended the school for eight years where he was locked into an educational
routine that focused on intellectual development and academic excellence. He himself was not a
spectacular student but he thoroughly enjoyed mathematics and even won two prizes in the subject.
But Duchamp received the most important prize for a drawing in 1904 at his commencement. He
