The First Basketball
Their dribbling down the court they shoot they score the winning points, that's what makes my team
happy. Basketball isn't just dribbling a ball it's rules, teamwork, and lots of fun. Basketball has been
played at many time and places. The first basketball was in Springfield, Massachusetts. The first
game was played on January 20, 1892. In the first basketball game there were 18 players on each
team. Dr. Naismith didn't have the money to design a new ball they used a soccer ball. The first
game was played for thirty minutes and the final score was 1–0. There were some rules though in
the first basketball game. The first basketball game had 13 rules. Some rules helped with fouls some
with putting the ball into play. In rule five

Football Vs Basketball Compare And Contrast
The first basketball game ever played was in 1891 and the first American football game was played
in 1869. Ever since then, American football and basketball are among two of the most liked and
watched sports in the United States. Even though both sports are completely different in general,
they are similar in many ways also. Both sports are excellent sports to watch and play, but some
people may prefer one over another. Throughout this essay, I will discuss similarities and differences
between football and basketball, such as regulations, scoring, teams and how the game. To begin,
football and basketball have many differences. One being that football consists of eleven players on
the field per team of which include different positions ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In football, the lowest you can score is two points, which is known as a safety. The highest you can
score is six points, which is known as a touchdown. The game is played on a 100, 120 if you include
both end zones, yard field of artificial turf with two goal posts opposite from each other. In order to
score, you must either throw or run the ball across the field. You are given four downs, per ten–yard
intervals, to move the ball. The goal is to move beyond the required amount so your play count
resets and you can move further down the field increasing your chance of scoring. The possession of
the ball can be changed by an interception of the ball, or once the defense stops the offensive team
forcing either a turnover, or a punt. Unlike football, basketball is played on a 94–by–50 foot wood
court. There are three ways to score points; a free–throw which is equal to one point, a two–point
shot (inside the outer ring), and a three–point shot (outside the outer ring). To score, you can either
pass or dribble the ball until you free of the defender and have a chance for a lay–up or shot. While
basketball is primarily played indoors on a wood court, football is mostly played in the outdoors on

Growth Mindset Quotes
In Flipped by Wendelin Van Draanen, the character Juli has a growth mindset. Juli has gone through
a lot, one of those challenges she had to go through was a sycamore tree that she climbed every day
to see the view. That obstacle she has to go through creates her to have a growth mindset because of
how much she loves that tree. In Flipped, Juli has a growth mindset. Juli says, "Then I realized how
much the wonderful breeze smelt. Additionally, Juli says, "It wasn't long before I wasn't afraid of
being up that high and found the spot that became my spot." This quote is showing that she was
afraid of being up that high in the sycamore tree, but she took on the challenge and got rewarded of
a great view. Bryce's kite got stuck in the sycamore

Personal Narrative: My Love With Basketball
I fell in love with basketball 7 years ago. What began as a few trial trainings gradually grew into a
deep passion for the sport. I realized that I had the flair for it as doing moves like layups came to me
very naturally. All I had to do was to observe my coach do an example once, practice the move a
few times, and I got it.
Basketball became a place where I could exhibit my talent and it has been so for the past 7 years.
Each time I play a match, I set a target for myself to be the top scorer of that game. I only settled for
the best. The feeling of a 3 point shot swishing into the net and blocking a shot from my opponent
left me feeling immensely satisfied and cool.
However, becoming the ace of my team did not just come in just a snap. It took time, sweat and
tears. There were expectations set by my coaches, teammates, and even the parents of my
teammates. These expectations eventually became of my own. To continue succeeding and
improving will need more than just talent. If I was not serious about training, I would fall behind
quickly. I realized the amount of effort I had to put in as I advanced to a higher level each year. I
could not play like how I first started out in Primary ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
I have been following him since he first shot to fame in 2009. One of Curry's most famous quotes is
"success is not an accident". I agree. At the age of 16, way before entering NBA, Stephen Curry
already had work habits that eventually led to his success. According to his coach, he was
meticulous with everything that he did. He made sure that he had perfect footwork, he made sure he
had perfect shooting form. If he did anything and it wasn't perfect, he did it over again, and he didn't
need a coach to tell him, he just did it. After every training, he would not leave the court until he had
shot 5 free throws consecutively and that was not an easy thing, but this was the level of excellence

The Boiler Bhangra Dance Team
Purdue University's own Boiler Bhangra dance team is one of the many distinct discourse
communities on campus. The team was founded back in the spring of 2006, in an effort to share the
unique culture and dance style of bhangra with the body of Purdue, as well as to compete on levels
that range from local to national. The Boiler Bhangra team is a perfect example of Swales' definition
of a discourse community; that is, the team perfectly follows the requirements for a group to be
considered a discourse community, as set by John Swales. One of the most basic, yet important,
ways to distinguish a discourse community is that, "A discourse community has a broadly agreed set
of common public goals" (Swales 471). It is important for a discourse community to have clear,
shared goals because it gives the discourse community a reason for existing, as well as something to
work towards accomplishing. The Boiler Bhangra team's goals are based upon why the group was
formed, as shown by member, Shareena Paul, "Our common goal is to perform, but it's typically
focused around teaching people the dance...We really...try to spread the word that we're a group on
campus and that we want to teach this dance; as well as, try to have a strong team that can perform
well at competitions." The team would have nothing to base its purpose off of, or overcome, without
these goals. Swales' second defining characteristic of a discourse group stresses the significance of
communication; simply put, "A

Characteristics Of A Life : How Children Succeed
There are many characteristics to succeed in life. In Tough's book, How Children Succeed, he states
that the traits grit, self–control, zest, social intelligence, gratitude, optimism, and curiosity is likely
to predict life satisfaction and high achievement. There are more traits that can benefit to succeed in
life and gain high achievement but, Tough settled with the seven traits that quantifies character.
Tough experimented with each trait and explained why they are most likely to succeed in life and
earn high achievement. Everyday people take risk to learn from their mistakes to manage in any
difficult time that may come their way. Having curiosity, self–control, and optimism are the most
important way to succeed in life and beyond because people learn from taking risks that leads to
situation that will benefit them in the future.
Everybody makes mistakes and they either learn from them or not. People makes mistakes by being
curious. Being curious help to succeed because anytime in anywhere people are always asking
question and they want answers towards their question to learn. According to Tough, "Of course, it's
easy to tell kids they should put their losses in perspective and keep their confidence intact despite
setbacks. It's harder when you're the person doing the losing." (Tough, 116). Tough is stating that
even a loss is a gain because in a game of chess, for example, a person loses the game by making the
wrong move. Due to a previous decision of a situation

The Hook Shot Essay
The Hook Shot
It was my junior year and football season was over. We had won the state championship. It was time
to relax and enjoy basketball season. Basketball season was always a fun time. I was a grade
younger than most of my friends who were on the team. I was always the kid that was brought up to
sit on the bench or be the sixth man. I never really got too much playing time, however, sometimes
if there was a big man on the other team, or some sort of foul trouble for one of the seniors, I would
get in. I had been playing with these same kids since the 6th grade. My role on the team had been
the same all the way up to this point. That was ok with me. What I really enjoyed though were all
the trips and tournaments and just hanging ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Finally, around 4:30 we headed out. We stopped to get something to eat then went to America West
Arena. We walked around a little bit and tried to hit on a few girls then it was time to go to the
locker rooms. We were all happy to be escorted down to the locker room by security. We felt very
official. Once in the locker rooms, we were all very excited. I did my usual pre–game routine,
running around in my underwear and just being stupid, reciting the Under Armor commercial
"WILL YOU PROTECT THIS HOUSE ?!?! I WILL, I WILL."
As I was walking around, Clark one of my team mates and usually the one that egged me on to do
all the stuff I did, asked me, "Hey you gonna do it?" "Yea, maybe" I said almost laughing.
"Yea, Bobby you should do it, Come on." Talmage, one of my good friends, and quarterback of the
football team butted in. "And oh yea don't forget your ring." He added.
We had planned to wear our state champion football rings during warm ups and on the bench, just to
show off.
I stood at the front of the locker room cleared my throat like I was about to say something important
and said, "Well ladies and Gentlemen if I get in, which means we'll be winning by a lot, I will do the
hook shot."
Everyone started laughing and yelling. All season I had joked around in practice and in some games
about doing a hook shot. Not just any hook shoot but a sky hook, something Kareem Abdul Jarbar
would do. The shot has been extinct since

The Lesson By Toni Cade Bambara
There is a lesson in every situation no matter if you choose to accept it or not. A lesson can
sometime guide you in the right path that is needed in
your life or maybe it can just be for a certain situation. In the short story "The Lesson" by Toni Cade
Bambara, she relates teaching a life changing lesson to
the character Sylvia. Sylvia is a very strong willed young lady who is challenged with poverty in her
neighborhood. The story begins with Miss Moore, an
educated black woman who moves in the neighborhood. Sylvia hated Miss Moore, because she
would always volunteer to take Sylvia and her cousin Sugar
on educational outings. The parents of the young children really disliked and talked about Miss
Moore, but they would still allow their children to go with
her to learn different aspects of life. While taking the children to the F.A.O Schwarz toy store Miss
Moore implies a lesson that Sylvia never saw coming.
Sylvia, being the narrator of the short story describes the language used in the reading. She lives in
Harlem where poverty is an everyday challenge in
her neighborhood. Which leads her to being angry and not really understanding her anger towards
life. On an ordinary hot day Miss Moore rounds up
the group of children which includes Sylvia, Sugar, Mercedes, Flyboy, Q.T., Junebug, Rosie Giraffe,
and Fat Butt to talk about arithmetics. Miss
Moore would like for the children to know that there are other ways to live and education is key, so
she took the children

The Competitive Philosophy Of Basketball : Ball Is Life
Ball Is Life
"I will not let anything get in the way of me and my enthusiasm to win"–Michael Jordan. The
intense sport of basketball is a popular sport adopted in many countries around the world. Basketball
is a handball game that is played by two teams with five players on each lineup. The object of the
game is to try to score points by shooting a ball through a netted hoop that is mounted to a
backboard ten feet high. This competitive game is my favorite sport because it embodies the
definition of a team sport, it is extremely mechanical, and it is nail bitingly exciting, as players try to
outscore their opponents.
There is no "I" in team. The sport of basketball demonstrates this popular saying for many reasons.
One aspect that displays how basketball is a collaborative sport is in the defense. If one is guarding a
player who is faster to the basket, that opponent is immediately the teammate's priority while the
initial player recovers as fast as possible. Also, one should be in help for the teammate closest if the
opponent has the ball. This means each basketball player always has someone's back. Another
example that models the cooperative nature of basketball is offense. If a player is driving the ball
down the court on a fast break, a teammate will almost always run beside that player and cut to the
basket for a pass, or "fill the lane". Additionally, A teammate will always come to the ball if a player
needs help. This means that there is always someone to make each

Marriage and Respect in "The Awakening" and "The Revolt of...
The novel, The Awakening, and the short story, "The Revolt of 'Mother,'" both stories have women
that are not respected by their husbands. Both of the women, Edna Pontellier and Sarah Penn, have
husbands who do not respect them, but they fight back in different ways. Their battles shows the
differences between these two women from an earlier and less accepting time. They are both strong
willed characters. They both believe strongly enough in themselves that they will go to the extremes.
Sarah moves out of her house. As does Edna, and they both do so against their husband's wills.

Sarah and her children discuss problems on the farm. This is because Sarah is lower than Edna on
the social ladder. Sarah may not be poor, but she is not wealthy like the Pontelliers and thus must
work. This makes her a much more necessary part of the household. So her choices and opinion are
much more valued to her family then Edna's opinions would be to her family. Edna may be able to
do things that Sarah cannot do, such as throw dinner parties, or even attend them, but because Sarah
works she gets more respect and does not have to end up committing suicide like Edna does. The
communication between the women and their husbands was very much a problem. Edna and Sarah
both could not talk to their husbands. Neither of them get what they want by just asking for it. Edna
may not have asked, neverless she was still shot down. When she began her move, and "When Mr.
Pontellier learned of his wife's intention to abandon her home and take up a residence elsewhere, he
immediately wrote her a letter of unqualified disapproval and remonstrance.(Chopin 100)" In
comparison to when Sarah asked her husband all he told he was no. She would question him on his
motives, but all he would say was, "I 'aint got nothin' to say.(Wilkins)" Both of the men's responses
seem very unfair. Leonce just tells her that her actions are inappropriate and to stop being herself,
which is a very controlling thing to do and shows his darker side. While Adoniram will not even

Using Newton's Three Laws Of Basketball
When thinking about basketball you would not think of Newton's laws. Well everything basketball
players do uses Newton's three laws. For example, when a player shoots or passes the ball they
would have to put a certain amount of force, as stated in newton's second law, to make the basketball
go into the basket or to make a pass. Newton's laws are used in Basketball, running up and down the
court, shooting or passing the ball, dribbling the ball. Basketball was created using Newton's three
laws of motion.
According to Newton's 1st law, " An object at rest will remain at rest unless acted upon by an
unbalanced force. An object in motion tends to stay in motion unless acted upon by an unbalanced
force." When playing basketball alone, you are able stay in motion, because nothing stands in your
way, but in a game you would be acted upon by an unbalanced force: the defender. The defender
would make you slow down or change direction. Since the ball is always in motion, it means the ball
is being controlled by the objects around it: Players, floor. If the ball was not controlled by the
objects stated, the ball would remain at rest, on the floor. Just how ... Show more content on

You would be able to take two steps, and and be forced to either shoot or pass the ball. When you
throw a ball onto the ground, it would bounce right back up. In basketball, you use Newton's third
law every time you dribble the ball. By pushing the ball down, the opposite reaction would make the
ball move back up, as said in Newton's third law, " For every action there is an equal and opposite
reaction." Just like dribbling the ball, shooting the ball uses applies to Newton's third law. When you
shoot a ball and hit the backboard, the opposite reaction would make the ball move backwards. Just
like any sport, Newton's law is constantly being used in Basketball. Most of the objects in basketball

Maria And Naomi Shihab Nye
Maria from the Sound of Music and Naomi Shihab Nye are very similar in ways that you could not
even imagine. While comparing and contrasting them there are many obvious ways in which they
have their own unique characteristics and personalities. There is also ways that are hidden under
their outer shell that they do not love about themselves but they would have to admit that it is true.
They is also somethings about themselves that are very similar. The two characters are completely
different in what they do in their everyday lives because one of them is not even a girl she is a
woman that has a job and they live in completely different parts of the world. They are also in very
different stages in their lifetimes and that is why they have different types of problems. This is why
there are so many different ways of comparing and contrasting both Maria and Naomi Shihab Nye.
When comparing them there are many different ways. Maria in the beginning of the story is a

Let The Fire Burn Documentary Analysis
Let the Fire Burn is a documentary about a radical social movement called MOVE in Philadelphia in
the 1970s, and their tumultuous interactions with the local police and city officials. Specifically, this
documentary revolves around the buildup of tensions between the movement and the Philadelphia
police, which culminated in the shootout and fire of 1985. Also, it tracks and provides eyewitness
accounts from the Philadelphia Special Investigation Commission that was held five months after
the fire, in addition to an interview with a young surviving member, Birdie Africa. MOVE was a
predominantly Black organization founded by John Africa that promoted a basic, natural way of

According to Christian Davenport, repression is used in order to "impos(e) a cost on the targets well
as (to) deter specific activities and/or beliefs perceived to be challenging to government personnel,
practices or institution" (Davenport 2). The police and city officials in Philadelphia repressed the
MOVE organization's freedoms of speech and association even before they became more rowdy and
violent towards other members of the community due to the group's anarchical and radical proposed
lifestyle. In an effort to exert full repression, the police used their full capabilities in order to
eradicate the group, finally ending with the incendiary bomb mentioned earlier. The Police
Commissioner's order to "Let the fire burn" shows the authority's disdain for the lives of the MOVE
members, including the high number of innocent children. In fact, only Officer Berghaier exhibited
any sort of human decency when he helped rescue the only child survivor from the fire. In the end,
the police and city officials were the group with the power to repress and protect themselves, while
MOVE fell apart as their strategy of direct violent action was ultimately used against them to justify

Cycle Of Basketball Research Paper
Everybody's path is different. Every player comes with different genetics, a different mindset, and
vastly different circumstances. This is what makes basketball so special. The fact that there is no
path, no set of rules or procedures to become a good basketball player. This is why we need to look
at basketball differently. Basketball is not a profession. It's an art form.
This is the gap that separates the generic from the gifted. When we're young we always try to find
out what makes the good players good. We watch film, decipher their moves and copy their jump
shots. Little do we know that this is what holds us back. In art, replication doesn't create success, it
creates mediocrity. By using what's already out there, we end up in the same place everyone else is.
This is the cycle of basketball. It's a cycle you will have to break out of, before it swallows you
whole. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
It's because they've perfected their own form of the art. They've become so good at their moves and
their shot that nobody else can stop it. This isn't because they've studied the game for hours on end,
perfecting everything they see other players do. It's because they've figured out what what they want
to do on the court, and had the tools to make it happen.
The Tools
If Picasso couldn't draw a straight line, or Leonardo Da Vinci didn't understand the color wheel, they
would never have been good painters. No matter how good the ideas were in their head, if they
didn't have the skills to display them, then nobody would have payed attention to it.
This is the same in basketball. If you want to do something on the court but don't have the ability to
do it, then there was no point in thinking about it in the first place. No matter how unique you art is,
if you don't have the skills to illustrate it, your art is worthless. This is why no matter how you want
to play, you need to have the skills to play that

Move Movement In Philadelphia
In the early 1970s through the 1980s, a controversial radical organization called "MOVE" was well

racism and police brutality over the years, this group turned violent in order to express themselves
and act in self–defense. As the whole city festered hatred and fear for this group, the public and

had a vision of tomorrow consisting of human beings living naturally and free in unity without

of hurting individuals, as it did not provide any beneficial purposes, such as food. In addition,
MOVE believed that the system was corrupt and their revolution was to "stop man's system from

Analysis Of Maya Angelou 's I Know Why The Caged Bird Sings
Like many African American writers in American history, migration is a defining part of Maya
Angelou's life and character. In her memoir I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings, Maya thoroughly
discusses each of the moves that shape the person she becomes. From St. Louis at seven to a
Southern California junkyard at fifteen, Maya's life is filled with both voluntary and involuntary
migrations. Some of these moves are intensely emotionally taxing, while others allow her to grow
and flourish. Although her expectations vary from move to move, without fail, her reactions and
circumstances elicit a change or response that define her character. Indeed, as Dr. Jerome De

She briefly considers suicide and separation from her beloved brother and only friend as preferable
alternatives to this forced migration. However, she follows Momma's stoic example and
uncomplainingly agrees to the move. She notes of Momma, "She looked pretty sad, but... [s]he
would have been more surprised than I had she taken me in her arms and wept at losing me" (123).
After her initial panic, her only reaction to moving in with her mother in what she believes to be
California is merely resignation. Her immediate reaction to the suggested migration to California is
negative, and although it cannot be said that her pessimistic emotions lead to or cause the extent of
the horrors the move holds, Maya's expectations of the migration certainly set the tone for her first
move. Despite her initial belief that her mother resides in California, Maya discovers in the car ride
to her new home that she and her brother will live in St. Louis with their mother, and not in
California with both parents. Not once does she wonder about what her new life might look like in
either city. She remembers, "I closed myself off to everything but the kissing sounds of the tires on
the pavement and the steady moan of the motor" (124). She merely attempts to pretend like the
move is not happening. She only reacts once the full reality of her situation strikes her, saying, "I
stopped crying since there was no chance to get back to Stamps and Momma" (127). Before

Jump Shot In Basketball
Basketball is one of my favorite sports, and is one of the most watched and played sports all around
the world. In basketball a jump shot makes it easier to score the basketball faster. Jump shots can be
a deadly weapon against your opponents, because it comes down to something they cannot stop. An
incorrect jump shot will have more miss shots than made shots, but a correct jump shot will have
more made shots than miss shots. Everyone wants a correct jump shot, but sadly a correct jump shot
isn't given to anyone, everyone has to put in hard work and go through the basic fundamentals to
develop a very good jump shot.
The first step to a correct jump shot is study proper positioning on the body when the jump shot is
being shot. Take notes and see if the feet, hands, arms, and body is positioned the correct way.
Next get a basketball and go to a basketball court or basketball gym and prepare to change the jump
shot if it the jump shot was incorrect.
Then position the feet in a proper position before shooting. Move the feet no more than shoulder
width apart. Take the feet and position them in a comfortable position that has a good balance. Get
the balance of the feet that feels comfortable for shooting, and then point the feet in the direction of
the basketball goal. Lift them off the ground, and make sure they are never flat footed when the ball
is caught at any direction. Develop the feet into a comfortable stance, and never change the stance
that is created. Lined the feet

Essay on Basketball Shooting
Basketball Shooting – The Art & Science of Shooting a Basketball
Basketball Shooting Is Both Art and Science
Fundamentals of Shooting A Basketball
By Coach Jerry Tarkanian
Shooting a basketball is both an art and a science. Basketball shooting is an art form because it
involves finely tuned hand–eye coordination rather than gross motor skills.
For example, unlike such skills as the defensive stance and pivoting, which are relatively invariable,
shooting form is highly individualistic. There is no one correct way of shooting a basketball,
although there are certain elements of basketball shooting form common to all good basketball
shooters that may be identified.

Basketball Shooter's Stance
Triple–Threat Basketball Position
Since basketball shots can be taken from any body position, whether on the floor or in the air, there
is no one identifiable "right" stance beyond the need for balance when setting oneself to take the
shot. Because the triple–threat position offers the greatest balance and versatility, let's begin with it.
The triple–threat position refers to a low, balanced stance from which the ballhandler may either
shoot, drive, or pass the ball. However, it may seem incongruous to have the shooter lower his
center of gravity prior to taking the shot because he has to get the ball over his defender, two factors
make this move necessary. First, he needs the lowered stance to gather upward momentum for his
jump shot; and second, he is more limited in what he can do with the ball when he is standing
upright than when he is in a crouched position.
The triple–threat position is just that, a stance from which the ballhandler may attack the defense in
any of three ways.
In addition, integral to any positioning before you take a shot is the action of squaring yourself to
the basket, or turning your body so that your shoulders and torso are facing the basket. In their haste
to get a basketball shot away before it is blocked, players sometimes will receive a pass or catch the
ball off the dribble while facing perpendicular

Taking a Look at the MOVE Organization
After having gathered a few different possible topics, I have narrowed it down to a paper about
criminal justice in the city of Philadelphia. More specifically, I decided to discuss the MOVE
Organization. After my collection of research, I found that the MOVE was more than a
neighborhood being burnt to the ground. Mainly that the people apart of the police department
intended to systematically take down the members of the MOVE Organization and anyone who
supported them. I want to make the case that the police already decided the fate of those people, and
that the members of the MOVE Organization were just misunderstood.
For those who do not know what the MOVE Organization is, it is a Philadelphia based black
liberation group founded by John Africa. CNN described the organization as, "MOVE is a loose–
knit, mostly black group whose members all adopted the surname Africa, advocated a 'back–to–
nature' lifestyle and preached against technology." MOVE followed what was known as "The
Guidelines", a document based on the views of John Africa. Christina Coleman says, "They were
passionate supporters of animal rights and members adopted vegan diets." All of the members would
wear their hair in a dreadlock fashion. Members of MOVE would use a bullhorn to what the
neighbors reported scream obscenities at all hours of the night. MOVE made compost piles of
garbage and human waste in their yards which attracted rats and cockroaches. They considered it
morally wrong to kill the

I Will Talk About Basketball
Hello today I will talk about Basketball. I will specifically talk about the history of it, current, and
the legends of it. I hope by the end of this Basketball will be your favorite sport as it is mine.
The first subject I will talk about is the history of Basketball. Basketball was created by a man
named James Naismith in 1891. James was told to teach a P.E. class at the YMCA training school in
Springfield, Massachusetts. He was told to come up with a game to entertain the boys being coached
by him, the requirements were that it could be played indoors though due to the fact that is was
winter and freezing cold outside. (Basketball in America: A History par.1) James recalled a game the
he and his friends played when they were young. The game was called or so they called it, "duck on
the rock", the idea of the game was to throw a small rock at a larger one in hopes of knocking it off a
boulder. He also thought of a time where he saw rugby players, instead of throwing a ball into a net
they would throw it into a trash can. He looked for a box but instead he found a peach basket so he
put it up on a wall and grabbed a soccer ball. (It's cool to think of the fact that maybe if he used a
box, today we would be using one too which would make the game tremendously harder) the main
point of the game was to throw the ball into the basket. A cool fun fact was the according to
"Alexander Wolff, in his book 100 Years of Hoops, Naismith drew up the rules for the new game in

Summary of The Lesson by Toni Cade Bambara Essay examples
The Lesson by Toni Cade Bambara The Lesson, by Toni Cade Bambara, portrays a group of
children living in the slums of New York City around 1972. They seem to be content living in
poverty in some very unsanitary conditions. One character, Miss Moore, the children's self
appointed mentor, takes it upon herself to further their education during the summer months. She
feels this is her civic duty because she is educated. She used F.A.O. Schwarz, a very expensive
toystore, to teach them a lesson and inspire them to strive for success and attempt to better
themselves and their situations. At the beginning of the story, the author gives us the feeling that a
child is narrating this story. She also shows that the child, Sylvia, is at ... Show more content on

"So this one day Miss Moore rounds us all up at the mailbox and its purdee hot and she's knocking
herself up about arithmetic. And school suppose to let up in summer I heard, but she don't never let
up." (Bambara 470) Miss Moore hailed the group two cabs, and they were off. When they arrive at
their destination, the author gives up another clue toward the extent of the childen's poverty. "Then
we check out that we on fifth avenue and everybody dressed up in stockings. One lady in a fur coat
hot as it is. White folks crazy." (Bambara 471) At the store, it is not long before the children begin
seeing things that interest them. The first of these is a microscope that costs $300. Miss Moore
comments on the educational value of microscopes but the children poke fun at the idea. ""Hey, I'm
going to buy that there." "That there? You don't even know what it is, stupid." "I do so," he say
punchin Rosie Giraffe. "It's a microscope." "Whatcha gonna do with a microscope, fool?" "Look at
things." (Bambara 471) The next interesting item that the kids find is a very expensive paperweight.
While discussing it, Miss Moore is sure to convey that while the object is very expensive, it's
purpose is very trivial. ""This here costs $480 dollars," say Rosie Giraffe. So we pile up all over her
to see what she pointing out. My eyes tell me it's a chunk of glass cracked with something heavy,

The Lesson By Toni Cade Bambara
In many pieces of classic literature, the theme is often misinterpreted. Poems, sonnets, and short
stories frequently have misleading titles that put false ideas into the readers' minds. Readers often
begin reading a work with a biased opinion of the contents of the story. The superficial theme of a
story is obvious, but the less obvious theme can have the most powerful message. In Toni Cade
Bambara's short story, "The Lesson," the apparent theme is poverty and wealth, but the true theme is
the misapprehension of everything not being as it seems. The first physical description of Miss
Moore gives the reader the impression that she is a woman of little wealth, but it is later inferred that
she is not poor. In the first paragraph of the story, readers learn, "...this lady moved on our block
with nappy hair and proper speech and no makeup. And we quite naturally laughed at her... And we
kinda hated her too... Miss Moore was her name. The only woman on the block with no first name.
And she was black as hell, cept for her feet, which were fish–white and spooky" (Bambara 170).
Sylvia and the other kids stereotype Miss Moore based on her looks. Even though Miss Moore and
Sylvia both live in a ghetto in New York, Miss Moore is wealthier than the children (Eldred 510).
However, if the reader glances over the smaller details of Miss Moore's past, he or she will miss the
minor factors that contribute to her economic status. She completed college, dresses well, and takes
the children on

Grit : The Power Of Passion And Perseverance
The Merriam–Webster Dictionary gives many different definitions defining the word "grit". A
definition that caught my attention was "unyielding courage in the face of hardship or danger" .It
gave me a personal reference as to reaching a goal, you have to be faced with challenges that you'll
need to conquer with grit being included. In Angela Lee Duckworth's TED Talk, "Grit: The Power
of Passion and Perseverance," she claims that having students being pushed to the max is the only
way to see the full extent of grit, and I agree with Duckworth. I was able to demonstrate grit on
becoming a better basketball play after not making the team my sophomore year of high school.
Ever since I was disappointed in my results of not making the team, I had told myself this wasn't
going to mean I was done playing basketball .I gave myself perseverance in knowing I could make it
next year with motivation. Short after I was cut from the basketball team, I had told myself there is
always a better opportunity therefore giving up wasn't an option. The next day after being cut I went
out onto the basketball courts and shot around to improve my skills as to the feedback I got back
from the coach. There would be days where I just wanted to give up because of how cold it was in
the middle of winter. By the time I was done shooting around I wouldn't be able to feel my fingers
because of how numb they would be; there would not be a week where I did not have a cold. Going
out onto the courts had helped

The MOVE Organization vs Philadelphia Police Essay example
The MOVE Organization surfaced in Philadelphia in the early 1970's. The MOVE movement was
one of "back–to–nature," which was poorly understood by their urban neighbors and the local
government and possibly by the organization itself (McCoy). John Africa, who is said to have been
illiterate, founded MOVE. It was a loosely organized and sparsely populated organization. I argue
that the failure of MOVE to "bow to the man" and the lack of police and government self–control,
led to the abuse of power and police brutality that culminated on May 13, 1985 of which the
magnitude Black's theories fail to predict. Black's theories on law, specifically "Socio Economic
Status" and "Organization" and its bearing on the application of law, will be used ... Show more

residents in Cobb's Creek, this time they included a constant protest of the "MOVE 9" imprisoned

Swiftly, and obviously with a lack of solid planning and forethought the city confronted the Osage

the use of arrest warrants for four MOVE members. The city used water cannons and hundreds of

Basketball has been around since 1891 it has seen a lot of improvements and some flaws, but with
its flaws basketball is a great sport. The game has grown from a sport with just a few teams in the
northeast to a nationwide sport with thirty NBA teams in almost all states and one in Canada.
Basketball has also grown in paying wise, from the original $2.50 for home games and $1.50 for
road game to the now league minimum of $507,336 for players who have not been in the NBA for
ten years to $1,448,490 for those who have been playing for ten years. Basketball also saw in less
then 100 years Juwan Howard get offers from the bullets and heat for $100 million for seven years.
This was the biggest offer for a player for at its time. Juwan might have been the most expensive
player, but he was far from a star. The NBA's first star was Walt Chamberlain from UCLA later
being joined by future star Bill Russell from San Francisco University. Walt and Bill would open up
the door for future superstars like Michael Jordan, Irving (magic) Johnson, and Nate Archibald.
Players like Michael, Magic, and Nate would open up the same door for stars we all know today as
LeBron James, Russell Westbrook, and Kobe Bryant. The doors that opened for them will open for
future stars of the game and the people who dream about becoming a superstar. Basketball is starting
to become a global trend with 113 global players being sign to NBA rosters. This many global

Descriptive Essay About Basketball
Basketball has been my favorite sport ever since I was little. Who knew a little rubber ball could
bring so much joy to a person. The sound of the ball dribbling as it hits the cold gym floors. The
smell after a good workout might have been unpleasant to the nose, but all the ecstasy it brought
was definitely worth it. I played in my middle school, Aptos, from sixth grade to eighth grade and I
just started playing for Washington in my sophomore year. I was such a big fan of basketball and my
all time favorite players will always be Kobe Bryant, Kyrie Irving, and Allen Iverson. They were
known for their great dribbling skills and their ability to defend anyone, no matter the size or
position that person played. These are the type of players that inspire people to be more creative and
have more fun with the ball. I remember the first time I watched a jelly video. I didn't know that it
was even called a "jelly" at the time, nonetheless, I was amazed by how the player made a simple lay
up look like something completely different and original. I studied this move to the fullest extent
and every time I tried it on the court, I would end up miserably failing. My friends didn't believe I
would be able to do it, but they would still support me nevertheless. "You're a post player, since your
flexibility is limited, try jumping higher and you'll get it," my friend Claire told me. Even though
they had little faith in me, I would always appreciate the little helpful tips they suggested. I gladly
took Claire's advice, training my legs all day and trying to challenge myself by raising my vertical
jumps. I saw a dramatic change in how high I jumped and I certainly knew that I would be able to
jelly. However, what I thought and what I can do were completely different things. It eventually
narrowed down to my technique. A jelly might look like an easy move, but the precision in this stunt
was ridiculous. Throughout my studying of the jelly, I failed to recognize timing as a very important
factor to finish this move. Sometimes I wish that basketball was easier and that so much frustration
wouldn't come from it, but then I realize what if there were no challenges? Basketball has taught me
so many lessons that I bring with me on

Human Beings Are Not Perfect Beings
On another note, Bailey (2014), referring to a future dominated by driverless cars, noted that,
"People a generation hence will marvel at the carnage we inflicted as we hurtled down highways
relying on just our own reflexes to keep us safe." Human beings are not perfect beings. People make
mistakes, get distracted, lose concentration, miscalculate, make wrong decisions, and get weakened
reflexes. However, when humans make mistakes, it is also the humans that recognize their faults,
improve on them, and vow to never make the same mistakes again. Yet, in driverless cars, if the
computer commits faults, who will be liable? Can the computer accept that it made the wrong

Speech About Basketball
Basketball Basketball, the sport that has been around for decades. An abundant amount of people
play the sport. In my opinion, it's one of the finest sports frabicated. The sport itself is mentally and
physically challenging. I will be explaining how to play the sport, the history of basketball, and why
you should play basketball. Basketball has been around for an expanded time. It was first
established in 1891 by James Naismith. James Naismith was once the basketball coach at Kansas
University. When he concocted the sport he used a peach basket as the goal. When it first originated
every time they would score they'd be required to call the janitor out with a ladder to fetch the ball
down. After a few months they cut the bottoms of the basket out. The rules have been changed
drastically since the game first originated. When basketball was first concocted you could not
dribble the ball. Instead of dribbling you were supposed to only pass the ball. Furthermore, you
could bounce the ball off the ground into the basket and that would count as a point or a basket.
However, now a days the only way you can move without passing the ball is to dribble.
Furthermore, there are three ways you can score. The first being from a free–throw. The second
from a shot from the paint or below the three pointer, and the three point shot. During basketball you
are required to be in tremendous physical shape. Running up the floor for 32 minutes will have you
breathing extremely heavy.

The Bombing Of The United States
On the fateful day of May 13th 1985, the police decided to bomb the compound of the radical,
motivated organization called MOVE. Leading up to the final confrontation, MOVE had been
involved in many standoffs with the Philadelphia police and city government. Regardless of the
complexity of the situation, there are no circumstances when dropping a bomb onto a residential
neighborhood onto a house, full of men, women, and children, would be acceptable. The officials
commanding the operation lacked a display of consideration for human lives, and also respect for
the neighboring people and properties surrounding the MOVE compound. The MOVE bombing also

Perhaps one of the clearest instances of conflict between MOVE and mainstream United States
society is the bombing of the MOVE house in West Philadelphia in 1985. Unfortunately, this was
not the first time there was confrontation between MOVE and the police. In fact, tension between
the MOVE radicals and the Philadelphia Police Department had been brewing since the early 1970s.
MOVE also proved to be a disturbance to their neighbors on the 6200 block of Osage, although this
was their intention. MOVE didn't view their actions as disturbances, but instead as calling attention
to gross levels of racial and economic inequality in the United States. Despite MOVE's intentions,
the police department often got complaints about the MOVE members yelling profanities out of a
megaphone while walking across their fortified rooftop bunker with guns in hand. According to an
interview with displaced residents located in archival records at Temple University, Charmaine
Alexander, a neighbor of the MOVE compound, says, "The MOVE members were on bullhorn from

Personal Narrative: How Moving Changed My Life
Over the past eight years of my life I've moved three different times, and each time was a stressful
and exciting adventure. When it comes to moving, I think about the heavy large brown boxes full of
clothing, the large three–ton orange and white U–Haul truck and the sore achy muscles that comes
along the day after the move. Some people like to hire people to help them move, but every time I've
moved it was only me, my mother, my younger brother, and some of my brother's friends if we were
lucky. Moving can also be a learning experience that can lead you down the path of stress, anger,
fear, and accomplishment. In life, you face different obstacles every single day. The first time I

York City streets so much that I never left for more than two weeks at a time. The only time I did

Since moving over three separate times in my life, I have picked up a couple of tips along the way.
First, I've learned that being in a negative mood is not going to make the moving process any easier.
Positivity is everything, and the more positive you are, the better things will work out for you in the
long run. Second, timing is everything and procrastinating during the moving process is never the
best idea, only thing it does it adds additional stress to the moving process and prolongs it. Third,
I've learned to be more open with my mother about things I'm not 100% comfortable with. Since my
final move, I have also learned to be more organized and know how to consume my time better.
Organization is key when it comes to moving and I will never take anything like that for granted

about winning games. But its more than that, I've learned many concepts in the game of basketball
I'm going demonstrate what made my basketball team a discourse community.

What is a discourse community? What do John Swales mean by a discourse community? And what
are the six steps in a discourse community? "A discourse community is a group of people that's
trying to reach their goals, and everyone has different functions. These public goals may be formally
described as concepts that play a part in a discourse community" (Swales220). Discourse
community have six steps. And these steps are "goals or purpose the group want", "has mechanism
of intercommunication among its members", "uses it participatory mechanisms to provide
information and feedback," "utilizes and hence possesses one or more genres in the communicative
furtherance of its aims," "acquired some specific lexis". "level of members with a suitable degree of
relevant content and discoursal expertise" (220–222). By having these six steps it provides all of the
concepts in a discourse community. These six steps are like the

The Talent Code Persuasive Analysis
What is it mean, to have greatness? Greatness is a word, that people use to describe someone or
something over a period of time to be the best in the world. But we ask ourselves how do we
cultivate expertise to achieve greatness? In the book, "The Talent Code" by Daniel Coyle and Kobe
Bryant documentary "Muse" expressed how deep practice and how failing can make you achieve
greatness and cultivate expertise. Throughout their arguments, they both express uses and limits of
their arguments on how is expertise is developed and cultivating greatness. In the book, "The Talent
Code" by Daniel Coyle, he theorized that deep practice can bring you to the sweet spot, which can
make learning stick. According to Mr. Coyle, "deep practice is a way of attentive practicing which
closely resembles deliberate practice." This is basically practicing when you are truly an expert in
your craft. One example that Mr. Coyle used to express that idea is a boy named Brunio trying to
practice a move called elastico . According to the the story, "The Talent Book" it states "The first
time we watch Brunio try the move he fails, then stops and thinks.....Then something clicks, he
started nailing the move."(13) This is a perfect example of deep practice, because Brunio was
practicing the move and when he fails he would stop and think of how he should perform the move..
He would keep trying until it clicked and started performing the move. This is deep practice,

Leaving My Life Behind
I will never forget the day I discovered that I was leaving my life behind. New house, new school,
new friends; it all seemed unreal. The place I grew up with all my friends was about to disappear,
soon only to be a memory. I didn't even get to say goodbye, was the only thought that travelled
through my head. I left all my best friends behind with no notice. The final summer I spent in my
house was one of the toughest summers of my life. All I wanted was to pause my life and go back to
when life wasn't hectic all the time. As much as I wanted to go back I couldn't. Little did I know
what the future held and how much my new life would later change me. I won't forget what
happened first. It really didn't seem real that we were moving until the sign went up in the yard. I
spent plenty of time just sitting and staring at it wishing that it was only my imagination, but no
matter how hard I tried to convince myself, I knew I was only being wistful and chasing after a wish
that would never come true. "18 days. Our house sold in 18 days, quicker than expected" I muttered
to myself. Everything seemed like a blur after that, with only twelve days left of summer I tried to
make it my best. I tried to make myself enjoy it and to be happy about the move, but there was
nothing to be glad about. When you leave the only life you've ever know it's hard to act like

Livin Existing Analysis
If someone asked me to describe this team right now I would say that they lack work effort,
competitive spirit, a desire to get better, self–motivation, accountability, and a wanting to be

asks of me. Do I work out every day, do I study the game, do I make sure I'm doing well in school.
Do I give all I should to my team, coach and parents? And most importantly, do I work hard for
myself. Can I say every day I have gotten better as a person, student, athlete, and son? Do I push
myself to see how truly great I can become? If not, then I must ask myself, am I living or just simply
existing. Living means I thrive for excellence in everything I do. Not necessarily to be great, but to
say I gave it all I had. Living means I push myself to accomplish things people say I can't or don't

oppose of living. If you are existing then you are not living. I live for the things in life that I love.
And basketball is one of those things. From the time the ball was put in my hands at the age of 5, I
knew it had a special place in my heart. I watched the game, I played the game, I learned the game,
and now I coach the game. Basketball moves me, it excites me, it's my first true love. I sweat for it, I
bleed for it, I dream of it, I cry for it, I smile for it. It is the one thing that brings me stability because
of how it impacts my emotions. But does it do that for

The First Basketball Game in Springfield, MA

  • 1. The First Basketball Their dribbling down the court they shoot they score the winning points, that's what makes my team happy. Basketball isn't just dribbling a ball it's rules, teamwork, and lots of fun. Basketball has been played at many time and places. The first basketball was in Springfield, Massachusetts. The first game was played on January 20, 1892. In the first basketball game there were 18 players on each team. Dr. Naismith didn't have the money to design a new ball they used a soccer ball. The first game was played for thirty minutes and the final score was 1–0. There were some rules though in the first basketball game. The first basketball game had 13 rules. Some rules helped with fouls some with putting the ball into play. In rule five ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 5. Football Vs Basketball Compare And Contrast The first basketball game ever played was in 1891 and the first American football game was played in 1869. Ever since then, American football and basketball are among two of the most liked and watched sports in the United States. Even though both sports are completely different in general, they are similar in many ways also. Both sports are excellent sports to watch and play, but some people may prefer one over another. Throughout this essay, I will discuss similarities and differences between football and basketball, such as regulations, scoring, teams and how the game. To begin, football and basketball have many differences. One being that football consists of eleven players on the field per team of which include different positions ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In football, the lowest you can score is two points, which is known as a safety. The highest you can score is six points, which is known as a touchdown. The game is played on a 100, 120 if you include both end zones, yard field of artificial turf with two goal posts opposite from each other. In order to score, you must either throw or run the ball across the field. You are given four downs, per ten–yard intervals, to move the ball. The goal is to move beyond the required amount so your play count resets and you can move further down the field increasing your chance of scoring. The possession of the ball can be changed by an interception of the ball, or once the defense stops the offensive team forcing either a turnover, or a punt. Unlike football, basketball is played on a 94–by–50 foot wood court. There are three ways to score points; a free–throw which is equal to one point, a two–point shot (inside the outer ring), and a three–point shot (outside the outer ring). To score, you can either pass or dribble the ball until you free of the defender and have a chance for a lay–up or shot. While basketball is primarily played indoors on a wood court, football is mostly played in the outdoors on the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 9. Growth Mindset Quotes In Flipped by Wendelin Van Draanen, the character Juli has a growth mindset. Juli has gone through a lot, one of those challenges she had to go through was a sycamore tree that she climbed every day to see the view. That obstacle she has to go through creates her to have a growth mindset because of how much she loves that tree. In Flipped, Juli has a growth mindset. Juli says, "Then I realized how much the wonderful breeze smelt. Additionally, Juli says, "It wasn't long before I wasn't afraid of being up that high and found the spot that became my spot." This quote is showing that she was afraid of being up that high in the sycamore tree, but she took on the challenge and got rewarded of a great view. Bryce's kite got stuck in the sycamore ... • 13. Personal Narrative: My Love With Basketball I fell in love with basketball 7 years ago. What began as a few trial trainings gradually grew into a deep passion for the sport. I realized that I had the flair for it as doing moves like layups came to me very naturally. All I had to do was to observe my coach do an example once, practice the move a few times, and I got it. Basketball became a place where I could exhibit my talent and it has been so for the past 7 years. Each time I play a match, I set a target for myself to be the top scorer of that game. I only settled for the best. The feeling of a 3 point shot swishing into the net and blocking a shot from my opponent left me feeling immensely satisfied and cool. However, becoming the ace of my team did not just come in just a snap. It took time, sweat and tears. There were expectations set by my coaches, teammates, and even the parents of my teammates. These expectations eventually became of my own. To continue succeeding and improving will need more than just talent. If I was not serious about training, I would fall behind quickly. I realized the amount of effort I had to put in as I advanced to a higher level each year. I could not play like how I first started out in Primary ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... I have been following him since he first shot to fame in 2009. One of Curry's most famous quotes is "success is not an accident". I agree. At the age of 16, way before entering NBA, Stephen Curry already had work habits that eventually led to his success. According to his coach, he was meticulous with everything that he did. He made sure that he had perfect footwork, he made sure he had perfect shooting form. If he did anything and it wasn't perfect, he did it over again, and he didn't need a coach to tell him, he just did it. After every training, he would not leave the court until he had shot 5 free throws consecutively and that was not an easy thing, but this was the level of excellence he held himself ... • 17. The Boiler Bhangra Dance Team Purdue University's own Boiler Bhangra dance team is one of the many distinct discourse communities on campus. The team was founded back in the spring of 2006, in an effort to share the unique culture and dance style of bhangra with the body of Purdue, as well as to compete on levels that range from local to national. The Boiler Bhangra team is a perfect example of Swales' definition of a discourse community; that is, the team perfectly follows the requirements for a group to be considered a discourse community, as set by John Swales. One of the most basic, yet important, ways to distinguish a discourse community is that, "A discourse community has a broadly agreed set of common public goals" (Swales 471). It is important for a discourse community to have clear, shared goals because it gives the discourse community a reason for existing, as well as something to work towards accomplishing. The Boiler Bhangra team's goals are based upon why the group was formed, as shown by member, Shareena Paul, "Our common goal is to perform, but it's typically focused around teaching people the dance...We really...try to spread the word that we're a group on campus and that we want to teach this dance; as well as, try to have a strong team that can perform well at competitions." The team would have nothing to base its purpose off of, or overcome, without these goals. Swales' second defining characteristic of a discourse group stresses the significance of communication; simply put, "A ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 21. Characteristics Of A Life : How Children Succeed There are many characteristics to succeed in life. In Tough's book, How Children Succeed, he states that the traits grit, self–control, zest, social intelligence, gratitude, optimism, and curiosity is likely to predict life satisfaction and high achievement. There are more traits that can benefit to succeed in life and gain high achievement but, Tough settled with the seven traits that quantifies character. Tough experimented with each trait and explained why they are most likely to succeed in life and earn high achievement. Everyday people take risk to learn from their mistakes to manage in any difficult time that may come their way. Having curiosity, self–control, and optimism are the most important way to succeed in life and beyond because people learn from taking risks that leads to situation that will benefit them in the future. Everybody makes mistakes and they either learn from them or not. People makes mistakes by being curious. Being curious help to succeed because anytime in anywhere people are always asking question and they want answers towards their question to learn. According to Tough, "Of course, it's easy to tell kids they should put their losses in perspective and keep their confidence intact despite setbacks. It's harder when you're the person doing the losing." (Tough, 116). Tough is stating that even a loss is a gain because in a game of chess, for example, a person loses the game by making the wrong move. Due to a previous decision of a situation ... • 25. The Hook Shot Essay The Hook Shot It was my junior year and football season was over. We had won the state championship. It was time to relax and enjoy basketball season. Basketball season was always a fun time. I was a grade younger than most of my friends who were on the team. I was always the kid that was brought up to sit on the bench or be the sixth man. I never really got too much playing time, however, sometimes if there was a big man on the other team, or some sort of foul trouble for one of the seniors, I would get in. I had been playing with these same kids since the 6th grade. My role on the team had been the same all the way up to this point. That was ok with me. What I really enjoyed though were all the trips and tournaments and just hanging ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Finally, around 4:30 we headed out. We stopped to get something to eat then went to America West Arena. We walked around a little bit and tried to hit on a few girls then it was time to go to the locker rooms. We were all happy to be escorted down to the locker room by security. We felt very official. Once in the locker rooms, we were all very excited. I did my usual pre–game routine, running around in my underwear and just being stupid, reciting the Under Armor commercial "WILL YOU PROTECT THIS HOUSE ?!?! I WILL, I WILL." As I was walking around, Clark one of my team mates and usually the one that egged me on to do all the stuff I did, asked me, "Hey you gonna do it?" "Yea, maybe" I said almost laughing. "Yea, Bobby you should do it, Come on." Talmage, one of my good friends, and quarterback of the football team butted in. "And oh yea don't forget your ring." He added. We had planned to wear our state champion football rings during warm ups and on the bench, just to show off. I stood at the front of the locker room cleared my throat like I was about to say something important and said, "Well ladies and Gentlemen if I get in, which means we'll be winning by a lot, I will do the hook shot." Everyone started laughing and yelling. All season I had joked around in practice and in some games about doing a hook shot. Not just any hook shoot but a sky hook, something Kareem Abdul Jarbar would do. The shot has been extinct since ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 29. The Lesson By Toni Cade Bambara There is a lesson in every situation no matter if you choose to accept it or not. A lesson can sometime guide you in the right path that is needed in your life or maybe it can just be for a certain situation. In the short story "The Lesson" by Toni Cade Bambara, she relates teaching a life changing lesson to the character Sylvia. Sylvia is a very strong willed young lady who is challenged with poverty in her neighborhood. The story begins with Miss Moore, an educated black woman who moves in the neighborhood. Sylvia hated Miss Moore, because she would always volunteer to take Sylvia and her cousin Sugar on educational outings. The parents of the young children really disliked and talked about Miss Moore, but they would still allow their children to go with her to learn different aspects of life. While taking the children to the F.A.O Schwarz toy store Miss Moore implies a lesson that Sylvia never saw coming. Sylvia, being the narrator of the short story describes the language used in the reading. She lives in Harlem where poverty is an everyday challenge in her neighborhood. Which leads her to being angry and not really understanding her anger towards life. On an ordinary hot day Miss Moore rounds up the group of children which includes Sylvia, Sugar, Mercedes, Flyboy, Q.T., Junebug, Rosie Giraffe, and Fat Butt to talk about arithmetics. Miss Moore would like for the children to know that there are other ways to live and education is key, so she took the children ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 37. The Competitive Philosophy Of Basketball : Ball Is Life Ball Is Life "I will not let anything get in the way of me and my enthusiasm to win"–Michael Jordan. The intense sport of basketball is a popular sport adopted in many countries around the world. Basketball is a handball game that is played by two teams with five players on each lineup. The object of the game is to try to score points by shooting a ball through a netted hoop that is mounted to a backboard ten feet high. This competitive game is my favorite sport because it embodies the definition of a team sport, it is extremely mechanical, and it is nail bitingly exciting, as players try to outscore their opponents. There is no "I" in team. The sport of basketball demonstrates this popular saying for many reasons. One aspect that displays how basketball is a collaborative sport is in the defense. If one is guarding a player who is faster to the basket, that opponent is immediately the teammate's priority while the initial player recovers as fast as possible. Also, one should be in help for the teammate closest if the opponent has the ball. This means each basketball player always has someone's back. Another example that models the cooperative nature of basketball is offense. If a player is driving the ball down the court on a fast break, a teammate will almost always run beside that player and cut to the basket for a pass, or "fill the lane". Additionally, A teammate will always come to the ball if a player needs help. This means that there is always someone to make each ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The novel, The Awakening, and the short story, "The Revolt of 'Mother,'" both stories have women that are not respected by their husbands. Both of the women, Edna Pontellier and Sarah Penn, have husbands who do not respect them, but they fight back in different ways. Their battles shows the differences between these two women from an earlier and less accepting time. They are both strong willed characters. They both believe strongly enough in themselves that they will go to the extremes. Sarah moves out of her house. As does Edna, and they both do so against their husband's wills. Neither of their husbands wants to have their wives move out of their houses, but they both do so and even go as far as to move their stuff with them. Edna only ... Sarah may not be poor, but she is not wealthy like the Pontelliers and thus must work. This makes her a much more necessary part of the household. So her choices and opinion are much more valued to her family then Edna's opinions would be to her family. Edna may be able to do things that Sarah cannot do, such as throw dinner parties, or even attend them, but because Sarah works she gets more respect and does not have to end up committing suicide like Edna does. The communication between the women and their husbands was very much a problem. Edna and Sarah both could not talk to their husbands. Neither of them get what they want by just asking for it. Edna may not have asked, neverless she was still shot down. When she began her move, and "When Mr. Pontellier learned of his wife's intention to abandon her home and take up a residence elsewhere, he immediately wrote her a letter of unqualified disapproval and remonstrance.(Chopin 100)" In comparison to when Sarah asked her husband all he told he was no. She would question him on his motives, but all he would say was, "I 'aint got nothin' to say.(Wilkins)" Both of the men's responses seem very unfair. Leonce just tells her that her actions are inappropriate and to stop being herself, which is a very controlling thing to do and shows his darker side. While Adoniram will not even ... For example, when a player shoots or passes the ball they would have to put a certain amount of force, as stated in newton's second law, to make the basketball go into the basket or to make a pass. Newton's laws are used in Basketball, running up and down the court, shooting or passing the ball, dribbling the ball. Basketball was created using Newton's three laws of motion. According to Newton's 1st law, " An object at rest will remain at rest unless acted upon by an unbalanced force. An object in motion tends to stay in motion unless acted upon by an unbalanced force." When playing basketball alone, you are able stay in motion, because nothing stands in your way, but in a game you would be acted upon by an unbalanced force: the defender. The defender would make you slow down or change direction. Since the ball is always in motion, it means the ball is being controlled by the objects around it: Players, floor. If the ball was not controlled by the objects stated, the ball would remain at rest, on the floor. Just how ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Let The Fire Burn Documentary Analysis Let the Fire Burn is a documentary about a radical social movement called MOVE in Philadelphia in the 1970s, and their tumultuous interactions with the local police and city officials. Specifically, this documentary revolves around the buildup of tensions between the movement and the Philadelphia police, which culminated in the shootout and fire of 1985. Also, it tracks and provides eyewitness accounts from the Philadelphia Special Investigation Commission that was held five months after the fire, in addition to an interview with a young surviving member, Birdie Africa. This is what makes basketball so special. The fact that there is no path, no set of rules or procedures to become a good basketball player. This is why we need to look at basketball differently. Basketball is not a profession. It's an art form. This is the gap that separates the generic from the gifted. When we're young we always try to find out what makes the good players good. We watch film, decipher their moves and copy their jump shots. Little do we know that this is what holds us back. In art, replication doesn't create success, it creates mediocrity. By using what's already out there, we end up in the same place everyone else is. This is the cycle of basketball. It's a cycle you will have to break out of, before it swallows you whole. ... No matter how good the ideas were in their head, if they didn't have the skills to display them, then nobody would have payed attention to it. This is the same in basketball. If you want to do something on the court but don't have the ability to do it, then there was no point in thinking about it in the first place. With persistent public demonstrations of racism and police brutality over the years, this group turned violent in order to express themselves and act in self–defense. As the whole city festered hatred and fear for this group, the public and police force unified to rid this group out of Philadelphia. In her memoir I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings, Maya thoroughly discusses each of the moves that shape the person she becomes. From St. Louis at seven to a Southern California junkyard at fifteen, Maya's life is filled with both voluntary and involuntary migrations. Some of these moves are intensely emotionally taxing, while others allow her to grow and flourish. Although her expectations vary from move to move, without fail, her reactions and circumstances elicit a change or response that define her character. [s]he would have been more surprised than I had she taken me in her arms and wept at losing me" (123). After her initial panic, her only reaction to moving in with her mother in what she believes to be California is merely resignation. Her immediate reaction to the suggested migration to California is negative, and although it cannot be said that her pessimistic emotions lead to or cause the extent of the horrors the move holds, Maya's expectations of the migration certainly set the tone for her first move. Despite her initial belief that her mother resides in California, Maya discovers in the car ride to her new home that she and her brother will live in St. Louis with their mother, and not in California with both parents. Not once does she wonder about what her new life might look like in either city. She remembers, "I closed myself off to everything but the kissing sounds of the tires on the pavement and the steady moan of the motor" (124). In basketball a jump shot makes it easier to score the basketball faster. Jump shots can be a deadly weapon against your opponents, because it comes down to something they cannot stop. An incorrect jump shot will have more miss shots than made shots, but a correct jump shot will have more made shots than miss shots. Everyone wants a correct jump shot, but sadly a correct jump shot isn't given to anyone, everyone has to put in hard work and go through the basic fundamentals to develop a very good jump shot. The first step to a correct jump shot is study proper positioning on the body when the jump shot is being shot. Take notes and see if the feet, hands, arms, and body is positioned the correct way. Next get a basketball and go to a basketball court or basketball gym and prepare to change the jump shot if it the jump shot was incorrect. Then position the feet in a proper position before shooting. Move the feet no more than shoulder width apart. Take the feet and position them in a comfortable position that has a good balance. Get the balance of the feet that feels comfortable for shooting, and then point the feet in the direction of the basketball goal. Lift them off the ground, and make sure they are never flat footed when the ball is caught at any direction. Develop the feet into a comfortable stance, and never change the stance that is created. Essay on Basketball Shooting Basketball Shooting – The Art & Science of Shooting a Basketball Basketball Shooting Is Both Art and Science Fundamentals of Shooting A Basketball By Coach Jerry Tarkanian Shooting a basketball is both an art and a science. Basketball shooting is an art form because it involves finely tuned hand–eye coordination rather than gross motor skills. For example, unlike such skills as the defensive stance and pivoting, which are relatively invariable, shooting form is highly individualistic. There is no one correct way of shooting a basketball, although there are certain elements of basketball shooting form common to all good basketball shooters that may be identified. Basketball Shooter's Stance Triple–Threat Basketball Position Since basketball shots can be taken from any body position, whether on the floor or in the air, there is no one identifiable "right" stance beyond the need for balance when setting oneself to take the shot. Because the triple–threat position offers the greatest balance and versatility, let's begin with it. The triple–threat position refers to a low, balanced stance from which the ballhandler may either shoot, drive, or pass the ball. However, it may seem incongruous to have the shooter lower his center of gravity prior to taking the shot because he has to get the ball over his defender, two factors make this move necessary. First, he needs the lowered stance to gather upward momentum for his jump shot; and second, he is more limited in what he can do with the ball when he is standing upright than when he is in a crouched position. The triple–threat position is just that, a stance from which the ballhandler may attack the defense in any of three ways. In addition, integral to any positioning before you take a shot is the action of squaring yourself to the basket, or turning your body so that your shoulders and torso are facing the basket. In their haste to get a basketball shot away before it is blocked, players sometimes will receive a pass or catch the ball off the dribble while facing perpendicular ... More specifically, I decided to discuss the MOVE Organization. After my collection of research, I found that the MOVE was more than a neighborhood being burnt to the ground. Mainly that the people apart of the police department intended to systematically take down the members of the MOVE Organization and anyone who supported them. I want to make the case that the police already decided the fate of those people, and that the members of the MOVE Organization were just misunderstood. For those who do not know what the MOVE Organization is, it is a Philadelphia based black liberation group founded by John Africa. CNN described the organization as, "MOVE is a loose– knit, mostly black group whose members all adopted the surname Africa, advocated a 'back–to– nature' lifestyle and preached against technology." MOVE followed what was known as "The Guidelines", a document based on the views of John Africa. Christina Coleman says, "They were passionate supporters of animal rights and members adopted vegan diets." All of the members would wear their hair in a dreadlock fashion. Members of MOVE would use a bullhorn to what the neighbors reported scream obscenities at all hours of the night. I hope by the end of this Basketball will be your favorite sport as it is mine. The first subject I will talk about is the history of Basketball. Basketball was created by a man named James Naismith in 1891. James was told to teach a P.E. class at the YMCA training school in Springfield, Massachusetts. He was told to come up with a game to entertain the boys being coached by him, the requirements were that it could be played indoors though due to the fact that is was winter and freezing cold outside. (Basketball in America: A History par.1) James recalled a game the he and his friends played when they were young. The game was called or so they called it, "duck on the rock", the idea of the game was to throw a small rock at a larger one in hopes of knocking it off a boulder. He also thought of a time where he saw rugby players, instead of throwing a ball into a net they would throw it into a trash can. He looked for a box but instead he found a peach basket so he put it up on a wall and grabbed a soccer ball. (It's cool to think of the fact that maybe if he used a box, today we would be using one too which would make the game tremendously harder) the main point of the game was to throw the ball into the basket. A cool fun fact was the according to "Alexander Wolff, in his book 100 Years of Hoops, Naismith drew up the rules for the new game in "about ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

She used F.A.O. Schwarz, a very expensive toystore, to teach them a lesson and inspire them to strive for success and attempt to better themselves and their situations. While discussing it, Miss Moore is sure to convey that while the object is very expensive, it's purpose is very trivial. ""This here costs $480 dollars," say Rosie Giraffe. • 89. The Lesson By Toni Cade Bambara In many pieces of classic literature, the theme is often misinterpreted. Poems, sonnets, and short stories frequently have misleading titles that put false ideas into the readers' minds. Readers often begin reading a work with a biased opinion of the contents of the story. The superficial theme of a story is obvious, but the less obvious theme can have the most powerful message. In Toni Cade Bambara's short story, "The Lesson," the apparent theme is poverty and wealth, but the true theme is the misapprehension of everything not being as it seems. The first physical description of Miss Moore gives the reader the impression that she is a woman of little wealth, but it is later inferred that she is not poor. In the first paragraph of the story, readers learn, "...this lady moved on our block with nappy hair and proper speech and no makeup. And we quite naturally laughed at her... And we kinda hated her too... Miss Moore was her name. The only woman on the block with no first name. And she was black as hell, cept for her feet, which were fish–white and spooky" (Bambara 170). Sylvia and the other kids stereotype Miss Moore based on her looks. Even though Miss Moore and Sylvia both live in a ghetto in New York, Miss Moore is wealthier than the children (Eldred 510). However, if the reader glances over the smaller details of Miss Moore's past, he or she will miss the minor factors that contribute to her economic status. In Angela Lee Duckworth's TED Talk, "Grit: The Power of Passion and Perseverance," she claims that having students being pushed to the max is the only way to see the full extent of grit, and I agree with Duckworth. I was able to demonstrate grit on becoming a better basketball play after not making the team my sophomore year of high school. Ever since I was disappointed in my results of not making the team, I had told myself this wasn't going to mean I was done playing basketball .I gave myself perseverance in knowing I could make it next year with motivation. The MOVE movement was one of "back–to–nature," which was poorly understood by their urban neighbors and the local government and possibly by the organization itself (McCoy). John Africa, who is said to have been illiterate, founded MOVE. It was a loosely organized and sparsely populated organization. I argue that the failure of MOVE to "bow to the man" and the lack of police and government self–control, led to the abuse of power and police brutality that culminated on May 13, 1985 of which the magnitude Black's theories fail to predict. • 105. Descriptive Essay About Basketball Basketball has been my favorite sport ever since I was little. Who knew a little rubber ball could bring so much joy to a person. The sound of the ball dribbling as it hits the cold gym floors. The smell after a good workout might have been unpleasant to the nose, but all the ecstasy it brought was definitely worth it. I played in my middle school, Aptos, from sixth grade to eighth grade and I just started playing for Washington in my sophomore year. I was such a big fan of basketball and my all time favorite players will always be Kobe Bryant, Kyrie Irving, and Allen Iverson. They were known for their great dribbling skills and their ability to defend anyone, no matter the size or position that person played. These are the type of players that inspire people to be more creative and have more fun with the ball. I remember the first time I watched a jelly video. I didn't know that it was even called a "jelly" at the time, nonetheless, I was amazed by how the player made a simple lay up look like something completely different and original. I studied this move to the fullest extent and every time I tried it on the court, I would end up miserably failing. My friends didn't believe I would be able to do it, but they would still support me nevertheless. "You're a post player, since your flexibility is limited, try jumping higher and you'll get it," my friend Claire told me. Even though they had little faith in me, I would always appreciate the little helpful tips they suggested. I gladly took Claire's advice, training my legs all day and trying to challenge myself by raising my vertical jumps. I saw a dramatic change in how high I jumped and I certainly knew that I would be able to jelly. However, what I thought and what I can do were completely different things. It eventually narrowed down to my technique. A jelly might look like an easy move, but the precision in this stunt was ridiculous. Throughout my studying of the jelly, I failed to recognize timing as a very important factor to finish this move. Sometimes I wish that basketball was easier and that so much frustration wouldn't come from it, but then I realize what if there were no challenges? Basketball has taught me so many lessons that I bring with me on ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Human Beings Are Not Perfect Beings On another note, Bailey (2014), referring to a future dominated by driverless cars, noted that, "People a generation hence will marvel at the carnage we inflicted as we hurtled down highways relying on just our own reflexes to keep us safe." Human beings are not perfect beings. People make mistakes, get distracted, lose concentration, miscalculate, make wrong decisions, and get weakened reflexes. However, when humans make mistakes, it is also the humans that recognize their faults, improve on them, and vow to never make the same mistakes again. Yet, in driverless cars, if the computer commits faults, who will be liable? Can the computer accept that it made the wrong move? Inevitably, the blame would direct again to the human beings who ... The proposed contact lenses have small wireless chips and glucose sensors embedded in them. The danger in this kind of device is the possibility that these extra parts will disintegrate from the main lenses and damage the eyes of the wearer. People behind Project Loon should ensure that the parts inside the lenses will not have negative impacts on the eyes of the wearer. Home Automation and Smart Thermostats Google has been working with Nest since 2014 developing smart thermostats and other home automation systems that aim to create a smarter home for more comfortable living. The Nest thermostat learns the preferred temperature of the home owners and builds a schedule around this information (Nest.com, 2017). It can program itself and helps the homeowner in saving a lot on energy use. For example, if the homeowner is out of the house, the thermostat programs itself to Eco Temperature; thereby, saving on energy (Nest.com, 2017). Furthermore, the Nest thermostat adapts with the changing of the season. The adjustments of temperature of the Nest thermostat can be done remotely. This group has had two major conflicts involving the Philadelphia Police. This first in 1978, which was a police standoff that resulted in the death of a police officer, possibly by friendly fire, injuries to several other individuals, and the life sentence of 9 MOVE members. The MOVE members had a fortified bunker built on the roof top. This was seen as a sniper threat and an opportunity for an entry for more tear gas (Floyd– Thomas, 2002; White, n.d. Trippett,1985). The ensuing blast ignited a blaze that engulfed the neighborhood in flames, eventually destroying approximately 65 nearby houses. The firefighters, that had earlier been spraying the MOVE house, stood by as the fire engulfed the first house and then the others. The order to let the fire burn was given by Commissioner Sambor. It was feared that Firefighter would be targeted by MOVE. The aftermath left eleven dead, five were children, 65 houses burned downer and 350 people displaced. An investigation to the incident showed that Mayor Goode was negligent for allowing a failed operation to continue (Floyd–Thomas, 2002; Trippett,1985; White, n.d.). • 117. Essay On My Mentor There have been many people in my life that had served as a mentor to me. This one in particular has had the biggest impact on my life so far. He was my basketball coach, Coach Ham. Our relationship ever since the first day I saw him has always been good. We both met at the Euclid High School girl's gym. My sister had basketball practice that day and the coach wanted me to go up there too. When I walked into the gym, I saw him sitting in an athletic sports chair on the side yelling out plays to run to the other girls. After my sister, Rashida, introduced me to him, he asked me if I wanted to practice with them, probably because I had already had my basketball gear on from my previous practice at the middle school. I did and but didn't want to practice with them because they were all older than me. I thought I would not be able to keep up with the other girls and they would get angry at me or I would slow them down. After a lot ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... • 121. Speech About Basketball Basketball Basketball, the sport that has been around for decades. An abundant amount of people play the sport. In my opinion, it's one of the finest sports frabicated. The sport itself is mentally and physically challenging. I will be explaining how to play the sport, the history of basketball, and why you should play basketball. Basketball has been around for an expanded time. It was first established in 1891 by James Naismith. James Naismith was once the basketball coach at Kansas University. When he concocted the sport he used a peach basket as the goal. When it first originated every time they would score they'd be required to call the janitor out with a ladder to fetch the ball down. After a few months they cut the bottoms of the basket out. The rules have been changed drastically since the game first originated. When basketball was first concocted you could not dribble the ball. Instead of dribbling you were supposed to only pass the ball. Furthermore, you could bounce the ball off the ground into the basket and that would count as a point or a basket. However, now a days the only way you can move without passing the ball is to dribble. Furthermore, there are three ways you can score. The first being from a free–throw. The second from a shot from the paint or below the three pointer, and the three point shot. During basketball you are required to be in tremendous physical shape. Running up the floor for 32 minutes will have you breathing extremely heavy. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Leading up to the final confrontation, MOVE had been involved in many standoffs with the Philadelphia police and city government. Regardless of the complexity of the situation, there are no circumstances when dropping a bomb onto a residential neighborhood onto a house, full of men, women, and children, would be acceptable. The officials commanding the operation lacked a display of consideration for human lives, and also respect for the neighboring people and properties surrounding the MOVE compound. The MOVE bombing also epitomizes larger issues of both racial and class prejudices that are prevalent in American ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Perhaps one of the clearest instances of conflict between MOVE and mainstream United States society is the bombing of the MOVE house in West Philadelphia in 1985. Unfortunately, this was not the first time there was confrontation between MOVE and the police. In fact, tension between the MOVE radicals and the Philadelphia Police Department had been brewing since the early 1970s. MOVE also proved to be a disturbance to their neighbors on the 6200 block of Osage, although this was their intention. MOVE didn't view their actions as disturbances, but instead as calling attention to gross levels of racial and economic inequality in the United States. Despite MOVE's intentions, the police department often got complaints about the MOVE members yelling profanities out of a megaphone while walking across their fortified rooftop bunker with guns in hand. According to an interview with displaced residents located in archival records at Temple University, Charmaine Alexander, a neighbor of the MOVE compound, says, "The MOVE members were on bullhorn from midnight to five a.m.; since we lived only three houses down, we couldn't sleep". Charmaine also continued to list different instances where MOVE had not only confrontation and tension with the police and City of ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 129. Personal Narrative: How Moving Changed My Life Over the past eight years of my life I've moved three different times, and each time was a stressful and exciting adventure. When it comes to moving, I think about the heavy large brown boxes full of clothing, the large three–ton orange and white U–Haul truck and the sore achy muscles that comes along the day after the move. Some people like to hire people to help them move, but every time I've moved it was only me, my mother, my younger brother, and some of my brother's friends if we were lucky. Moving can also be a learning experience that can lead you down the path of stress, anger, fear, and accomplishment. In life, you face different obstacles every single day. The first time I moved, I was a young teenager that was fresh out of middle school and enjoyed the crowded New York City streets so much that I never left for more than two weeks at a time. The only time I did leave New York was for vacation, but all of that was about to change in ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Since moving over three separate times in my life, I have picked up a couple of tips along the way. First, I've learned that being in a negative mood is not going to make the moving process any easier. Positivity is everything, and the more positive you are, the better things will work out for you in the long run. Second, timing is everything and procrastinating during the moving process is never the best idea, only thing it does it adds additional stress to the moving process and prolongs it. Third, I've learned to be more open with my mother about things I'm not 100% comfortable with. Since my final move, I have also learned to be more organized and know how to consume my time better. Organization is key when it comes to moving and I will never take anything like that for granted again. • 133. Reflection Of A Discourse Community Growing up I didn't socialize with people so it was hard for me to join a discourse community. But we I was around the age of fifteen I joined the basketball team, and ever since then it became my discourse community. In this paper, I'm going to explain how the team was a discourse community to me. And what roles we did to become a discourse community. Many people say basketball is all about winning games. But its more than that, I've learned many concepts in the game of basketball I'm going demonstrate what made my basketball team a discourse community. Definition What is a discourse community? What do John Swales mean by a discourse community? And what are the six steps in a discourse community? "A discourse community is a group of people that's trying to reach their goals, and everyone has different functions. These public goals may be formally described as concepts that play a part in a discourse community" (Swales220). Discourse community have six steps. And these steps are "goals or purpose the group want", "has mechanism of intercommunication among its members", "uses it participatory mechanisms to provide information and feedback," "utilizes and hence possesses one or more genres in the communicative furtherance of its aims," "acquired some specific lexis". "level of members with a suitable degree of relevant content and discoursal expertise" (220–222). By having these six steps it provides all of the concepts in a discourse community. • 137. The Talent Code Persuasive Analysis What is it mean, to have greatness? Greatness is a word, that people use to describe someone or something over a period of time to be the best in the world. But we ask ourselves how do we cultivate expertise to achieve greatness? In the book, "The Talent Code" by Daniel Coyle and Kobe Bryant documentary "Muse" expressed how deep practice and how failing can make you achieve greatness and cultivate expertise. Throughout their arguments, they both express uses and limits of their arguments on how is expertise is developed and cultivating greatness. In the book, "The Talent Code" by Daniel Coyle, he theorized that deep practice can bring you to the sweet spot, which can make learning stick. According to Mr. Coyle, "deep practice is a way of attentive practicing which closely resembles deliberate practice." This is basically practicing when you are truly an expert in your craft. One example that Mr. Coyle used to express that idea is a boy named Brunio trying to practice a move called elastico . According to the the story, "The Talent Book" it states "The first time we watch Brunio try the move he fails, then stops and thinks.....Then something clicks, he started nailing the move."(13) This is a perfect example of deep practice, because Brunio was practicing the move and when he fails he would stop and think of how he should perform the move.. He would keep trying until it clicked and started performing the move. This is deep practice, stopping and thinking, this is how ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 141. Leaving My Life Behind I will never forget the day I discovered that I was leaving my life behind. New house, new school, new friends; it all seemed unreal. The place I grew up with all my friends was about to disappear, soon only to be a memory. I didn't even get to say goodbye, was the only thought that travelled through my head. I left all my best friends behind with no notice. The final summer I spent in my house was one of the toughest summers of my life. All I wanted was to pause my life and go back to when life wasn't hectic all the time. As much as I wanted to go back I couldn't. Little did I know what the future held and how much my new life would later change me. I won't forget what happened first. It really didn't seem real that we were moving until the sign went up in the yard. I spent plenty of time just sitting and staring at it wishing that it was only my imagination, but no matter how hard I tried to convince myself, I knew I was only being wistful and chasing after a wish that would never come true. "18 days. Our house sold in 18 days, quicker than expected" I muttered to myself. Everything seemed like a blur after that, with only twelve days left of summer I tried to make it my best. I tried to make myself enjoy it and to be happy about the move, but there was nothing to be glad about. When you leave the only life you've ever know it's hard to act like everything is fine. With only one short month until we moved out and started a new journey, summer was coming to an end. After ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 145. Livin Existing Analysis If someone asked me to describe this team right now I would say that they lack work effort, competitive spirit, a desire to get better, self–motivation, accountability, and a wanting to be coached. At some point in time I must ask myself, am I really and truly trying to do the things coach asks of me. Do I work out every day, do I study the game, do I make sure I'm doing well in school. Do I give all I should to my team, coach and parents? And most importantly, do I work hard for myself. Can I say every day I have gotten better as a person, student, athlete, and son? Do I push myself to see how truly great I can become? If not, then I must ask myself, am I living or just simply existing. Living means I thrive for excellence in everything I do. Not necessarily to be great, but to say I gave it all I had. Living means I push myself to accomplish things people say I can't or don't dare to attempt. Living means finding things that I love so I can hold on to them. Living means remembering that I'm not promised tomorrow, so I make every decision and choice count. ...
