WSU/Winter 2019
The Writer
I am writing to the general public, which seeks to understand
Rock and Roll from a professional
music historian. I would like to be perceived as an intellectual,
with comprehensive
understanding of the music industry as well as its history. The
audience majorly understands
English. Therefore, the written documents will be in English.
There are no political or ethical
factors that mandate me to adjust the message of the document.
Audience
Consider your primary audience (the main, intended reader of
the final document), secondary
audiences (others who will read/review the document as it is
being developed/after it has been
produced), and hidden audiences (readers who are not the
audience but might incidentally
encounter the document and have an interest in it.) Consider
primary and secondary audiences
for items 1-5; focus on hidden audience in item 6.
1. Who is the primary audience?
I am writing the document to a group of people, people who are
interested in understanding
music history. I have not interacted with the audience directly.
The audience is part of the
community surrounding our institution. The main assumption I
can make about the audience is
that they are native English speakers.
2. What type of audience is this and what are they looking for in
the document?
The audience are members of general public interested in
learning music history. They are non-
specialists and a large percentage attained basic education.
3. How much knowledge or technical expertise does the
audience have on this subject?
The audience has no expertise about the subject. Therefore, I
have to include much detail and
facts about Rock and Roll. The terms and concepts need no
explanation because the intended
audience is native English speakers and have attained basic
education.
4. What biases or preconceptions will your audience bring to the
document?
The audience is very enthusiastic about the subject. The
preconceptions and biases will
enhance the readers positive reception of the document.
Evidently, they are not likely to resist
the situation and have a high likeability to agree with the
information.
5. What cultural considerations do you need to address for this
audience?
3
Project Planning Worksheet: Analyzing the Writing Situation
WSU/Winter 2019
The document will seldom have international readers. However,
there may be other reader
whom English is not their first language. There is no need to
adjust the content of the
document because the primary audience understand English.
There are no customs or
traditions that can affect the message intended in the document.
6. Who are the hidden audiences for this document?
Other people who might read the document are international
students interested in Rock and
Roll. They have attained basic education but have no
understanding of the subject. The main
assumptions and preconceptions are that Rock and Roll is music
for English native speakers.
Message and Medium
1. Given the audience and purpose, what is the most important
information to
communicate? What does the audience need to know?
The most important information to communicate is defining
Rock and Roll, the nature of
performances and recording.
2. Given the audience and purpose, what is the most important
information to exclude?
What does the audience already know, not want, or not need?
Based on the nature of the audience, there is no need to explain
or identify the number of Rock
and Roll bands. The audience already understand the different
Rock and Roll singers.
3. Given audience and purpose, what tone and style are most
appropriate?
The tone of the document should be easy-to-read, with a
journalistic style that reports or
conveys important facts about the subject.
4. What genre is most appropriate?
The audience expects Rock and Roll genre history. There is no
need to exclude any information
related to the subject. However, since the audience is partially
informed about the subject,
there is no need to mention the different Rock and Roll bands or
musicians. The information
should be organized in paragraphs that are easy-to-read and
very informative.
5. What medium is most appropriate for this communication,
and does this medium affect
writing, design or distribution of the document?
The most effective medium are printed booklets and soft copy
documents.
6. Given the complete writing situation, what overall look is
desired or most appropriate for
this document?
The overall look should be professional, organized, and
readable.

WSU/Winter 2019
7. How will this document be delivered to the audience?
The document will be delivered by hand or emailed through
subscriptions.
Constraints and limitations
1. What practical or physical circumstances will affect the
writing, design or distribution
of this document?
I am writing from a school environment.
The tools I have include computer, notebooks, pens, library,
smartphone.
The document should be ready within a week
I should complete the draft within 3 days.
The budget is USD 1000.
2. What constraints or limitations do you bring to the project?
My own belief, attitudes, and prejudices will not affect the
content because the work is
academic and based on research.
3. What constraints will the audience face when they interact
with the document?
The attitudes of the readers will not influence the document
information. They will access
the document through their emails or hard copy printed and
distributed in public areas. The
environment they will be in includes public spaces, homes,
malls, and school. Those
preferring soft copy should either have computers, smartphones,
tablets, or e-readers. The
documents will be distributed for free, so there is no limitation
in terms of time or
resources.
4. What company policies, laws, or ethical considerations affect
the writing, design, or
distribution of the text?
Any information that is sourced from others must be cited
appropriately to avoid
plagiarism. It is ethical for any scholar or professional give
credit to information sourced
from others.
5. What relationships between individuals or groups might
affect the writing, design, or
distribution of the document?
5
Project Planning Worksheet: Analyzing the Writing Situation
WSU/Winter 2019
The structural hierarchy of the organization does not matter
because the project was
initiated as part of class work. The main objective is to meet the
objectives or intended
learning outcomes while also conveying information to the
intended audience.
6. What cultural, political or other factors place constraints on
this project?
There are no factors that place constraints.
Rock and Roll
Rock is a form of a popular music that originated from the
united states in the 1950s. It
incorporates electrically amplified instruments, heavy beats,
and simple phrases. Rock-and-roll
establishment was mostly comprised of teenagers and young
adults, of which many falls into a
group known as "hippies".
Music performed in the group was produced by two groups of
young men performing on
different platforms. The main instruments used in the group
were guitars, microphones, and
amplified speaker systems. This type of music was mainly
identified by a strong rhythmic
pattern and loud sounds. In this genre, the audience preferred
listening to music over dancing.
This was clearly shown during performances since the audience
crowded areas near the speakers
to get the message from the song more perfect and first hand. In
times of performances,
especially on large stages, there was a sound engineer that
monitored and controlled the output
that was being produced by the speakers to ensure everything
was perfect and was in order.
The main instruments that were used for recording music
included; condenser
microphone, a cathode-follower amplifier, a sound level meter
and a movable tape recorder. A
test recording was then conducted for a period of 50 to100
seconds. After completion, recordings
were then taken to a laboratory for checking using a magnetic
tape recorder, a sound level meter,
an octave band filter, a graphic level recorder and a statistical
distribution analyzer. The
statistical analyzer was meant to identify the period at the time
of the test recordings.
The graphics level recorder had a mechanical switching device
attached to it that
produced the statistical data which was then recorded in two
ways. By doing this, it enabled the
band to identify the total period count and time spent in each
stage of production.

Memo
I am writing to describe my experience and lessons as I worked
on the project. The project has
been so helpful to me, particularly understanding the various
issues underlying Rock and Roll
music. Working on this project has assisted me to attain the
course objectives and enhance my
writing abilities. In the subsequent sections, I will outline the
experiences based on the rhetorical
situation, writing process choices, progress toward course
objectives, and challenges.
Rhetorical Situation
The rhetorical situation describes the circumstances that are
used to define an issue or set of
circumstances. While working on the project, I understood that
Rock and Roll was a music genre
that had a rich history that was not appreciated in the
contemporary society. The project outcome
prove that nothing has changed yet and I firmly believe that
people need to understand music
history to appreciate its importance.
Writing Process and Choices
The writing process has been enriching. It is especially
important when formulating an academic
document that can be helpful to music enthusiasts and lovers. I
redesigned the document to make
easy to read and attractive to the audience.
Progress Towards Course Goals
Through undertaking the project, I have enhanced mu writing
skills and appreciated the
importance of discipline. It was not an easy task but I
appreciate that I managed to complete
before the deadline. The experience I gained will assist me in
future as a professional.
Challenges
The main challenges I had was a constrained budget to cater for
the time spent researching the
subject. I also needed to speak with former Rock and Roll band
managers in order to understand
the history from a different perspective. I still could not
understand why the contemporary
society does not appreciate Rock and Roll yet it is one of the
best music genres in the world.

  • 1. 1 Project Planning Worksheet: Analyzing the Writing Situation WSU/Winter 2019 Project planning: Analyzing Your Writing Situation Project identification Writer’s name(s), title: Project name: Rock and Roll Context The context of writing the document was part of class assignments but was intended to offer information that would benefit people wanting to learn music history. The paper introduces rock and roll, a genre of music that was popular during the 1950s. It also outlines the nature of the music and the instruments that were used. The document reintroduces the music in the contemporary society. Purpose 1. From the perspective of the organization, what are the purposes of this document? The main purpose of the document is to explain or describe rock
  • 2. and roll. The secondary purpose is to describe how the music was performed. Other purposes of the document are identifying the instruments, rhythmic nature, and nature of Rock and Roll performances. 2. From your perspective as the author, what are the purposes of this document? The main purpose was to introduce and explain Rock and Roll music genre. The secondary purpose was to explain how the performances were organized. Other purposes were identifying the instruments, nature of recording, and how the music was analyzed. 3. From the perspective of the audience, what are the purposes of this document? The purpose of the document is to explain Rock and Roll. The secondary purpose was to understand how Rock and Roll was performed. Other purposes included knowing which instruments were used, examples of Rock and Roll bands, and the nature of recording Rock and Roll music.
  • 3. 2 Project Planning Worksheet: Analyzing the Writing Situation WSU/Winter 2019 The Writer I am writing to the general public, which seeks to understand Rock and Roll from a professional music historian. I would like to be perceived as an intellectual, with comprehensive understanding of the music industry as well as its history. The audience majorly understands English. Therefore, the written documents will be in English. There are no political or ethical factors that mandate me to adjust the message of the document. Audience Consider your primary audience (the main, intended reader of the final document), secondary audiences (others who will read/review the document as it is being developed/after it has been produced), and hidden audiences (readers who are not the audience but might incidentally encounter the document and have an interest in it.) Consider primary and secondary audiences for items 1-5; focus on hidden audience in item 6. 1. Who is the primary audience? I am writing the document to a group of people, people who are interested in understanding music history. I have not interacted with the audience directly. The audience is part of the
  • 4. community surrounding our institution. The main assumption I can make about the audience is that they are native English speakers. 2. What type of audience is this and what are they looking for in the document? The audience are members of general public interested in learning music history. They are non- specialists and a large percentage attained basic education. 3. How much knowledge or technical expertise does the audience have on this subject? The audience has no expertise about the subject. Therefore, I have to include much detail and facts about Rock and Roll. The terms and concepts need no explanation because the intended audience is native English speakers and have attained basic education. 4. What biases or preconceptions will your audience bring to the document? The audience is very enthusiastic about the subject. The preconceptions and biases will enhance the readers positive reception of the document. Evidently, they are not likely to resist the situation and have a high likeability to agree with the information. 5. What cultural considerations do you need to address for this audience?
  • 5. 3 Project Planning Worksheet: Analyzing the Writing Situation WSU/Winter 2019 The document will seldom have international readers. However, there may be other reader whom English is not their first language. There is no need to adjust the content of the document because the primary audience understand English. There are no customs or traditions that can affect the message intended in the document. 6. Who are the hidden audiences for this document? Other people who might read the document are international students interested in Rock and Roll. They have attained basic education but have no understanding of the subject. The main assumptions and preconceptions are that Rock and Roll is music for English native speakers. Message and Medium 1. Given the audience and purpose, what is the most important information to communicate? What does the audience need to know? The most important information to communicate is defining Rock and Roll, the nature of performances and recording. 2. Given the audience and purpose, what is the most important information to exclude? What does the audience already know, not want, or not need?
  • 6. Based on the nature of the audience, there is no need to explain or identify the number of Rock and Roll bands. The audience already understand the different Rock and Roll singers. 3. Given audience and purpose, what tone and style are most appropriate? The tone of the document should be easy-to-read, with a journalistic style that reports or conveys important facts about the subject. 4. What genre is most appropriate? The audience expects Rock and Roll genre history. There is no need to exclude any information related to the subject. However, since the audience is partially informed about the subject, there is no need to mention the different Rock and Roll bands or musicians. The information should be organized in paragraphs that are easy-to-read and very informative. 5. What medium is most appropriate for this communication, and does this medium affect writing, design or distribution of the document? The most effective medium are printed booklets and soft copy documents. 6. Given the complete writing situation, what overall look is desired or most appropriate for this document? The overall look should be professional, organized, and
  • 7. readable. 4 Project Planning Worksheet: Analyzing the Writing Situation WSU/Winter 2019 7. How will this document be delivered to the audience? The document will be delivered by hand or emailed through subscriptions. Constraints and limitations 1. What practical or physical circumstances will affect the writing, design or distribution of this document? I am writing from a school environment. The tools I have include computer, notebooks, pens, library, smartphone. The document should be ready within a week I should complete the draft within 3 days. The budget is USD 1000. 2. What constraints or limitations do you bring to the project? My own belief, attitudes, and prejudices will not affect the
  • 8. content because the work is academic and based on research. 3. What constraints will the audience face when they interact with the document? The attitudes of the readers will not influence the document information. They will access the document through their emails or hard copy printed and distributed in public areas. The environment they will be in includes public spaces, homes, malls, and school. Those preferring soft copy should either have computers, smartphones, tablets, or e-readers. The documents will be distributed for free, so there is no limitation in terms of time or resources. 4. What company policies, laws, or ethical considerations affect the writing, design, or distribution of the text? Any information that is sourced from others must be cited appropriately to avoid plagiarism. It is ethical for any scholar or professional give credit to information sourced from others. 5. What relationships between individuals or groups might affect the writing, design, or distribution of the document? 5
  • 9. Project Planning Worksheet: Analyzing the Writing Situation WSU/Winter 2019 The structural hierarchy of the organization does not matter because the project was initiated as part of class work. The main objective is to meet the objectives or intended learning outcomes while also conveying information to the intended audience. 6. What cultural, political or other factors place constraints on this project? There are no factors that place constraints. Rock and Roll Rock is a form of a popular music that originated from the united states in the 1950s. It incorporates electrically amplified instruments, heavy beats, and simple phrases. Rock-and-roll establishment was mostly comprised of teenagers and young adults, of which many falls into a group known as "hippies". Music performed in the group was produced by two groups of young men performing on

This type of music was mainly identified by a strong rhythmic pattern and loud sounds. In this genre, the audience preferred listening to music over dancing. This was clearly shown during performances since the audience crowded areas near the speakers to get the message from the song more perfect and first hand. In times of performances, especially on large stages, there was a sound engineer that monitored and controlled the output that was being produced by the speakers to ensure everything was perfect and was in order. The main instruments that were used for recording music included; condenser microphone, a cathode-follower amplifier, a sound level meter and a movable tape recorder. A test recording was then conducted for a period of 50 to100 seconds. After completion, recordings were then taken to a laboratory for checking using a magnetic tape recorder, a sound level meter, an octave band filter, a graphic level recorder and a statistical distribution analyzer. The
  • 11. statistical analyzer was meant to identify the period at the time of the test recordings. The graphics level recorder had a mechanical switching device attached to it that produced the statistical data which was then recorded in two ways. By doing this, it enabled the band to identify the total period count and time spent in each stage of production. Memo I am writing to describe my experience and lessons as I worked on the project. The project has been so helpful to me, particularly understanding the various issues underlying Rock and Roll music. Working on this project has assisted me to attain the course objectives and enhance my writing abilities. In the subsequent sections, I will outline the experiences based on the rhetorical situation, writing process choices, progress toward course objectives, and challenges. Rhetorical Situation The rhetorical situation describes the circumstances that are used to define an issue or set of circumstances. While working on the project, I understood that
  • 16. Rock and Roll was a music genre that had a rich history that was not appreciated in the contemporary society. The project outcome prove that nothing has changed yet and I firmly believe that people need to understand music history to appreciate its importance. Writing Process and Choices The writing process has been enriching. It is especially important when formulating an academic document that can be helpful to music enthusiasts and lovers. I redesigned the document to make easy to read and attractive to the audience. Progress Towards Course Goals Through undertaking the project, I have enhanced mu writing skills and appreciated the importance of discipline. It was not an easy task but I appreciate that I managed to complete before the deadline. The experience I gained will assist me in future as a professional. Challenges The main challenges I had was a constrained budget to cater for the time spent researching the
  • 17. subject. I also needed to speak with former Rock and Roll band managers in order to understand the history from a different perspective. I still could not understand why the contemporary society does not appreciate Rock and Roll yet it is one of the best music genres in the world.
