1. There are dynamic
and stative verbs in
the English language
Some English verbs, which
we call state, non-
continuous or stative
verbs, aren’t used in
continuous tenses
2. These verbs often describe
states that last for some time.
Bread consists of flour, water
and yeast.
Julie’s always hated sausages.
3. Is it right for you to say?
I´m loving The Beatles
Enormous was meaning very big.
Those children aren´t mattering to
have inedible food for dinner
Neither Thomas nor Michael want
to go to the cinema
4. So, you can now use these verbs in
sentences to practise:
Consist, hate, love, mean, matter, wa
nt
Of course, there are many others………
6. BE
be is usually a stative verb, but
when it is used in the continuous it
means ‘behaving’ or ‘acting’
you are stupid = it’s part of your
personality
you are being stupid = only
now, not usually
7. THINK
think (stative) = have an opinion
I think that coffee is great
think (dynamic) = consider, have
in my head
what are you thinking about? I’m
thinking about my next holiday
8. HAVE
have (stative) = own
I have a car
have (dynamic) = part of an
expression
I’m having a party / a picnic / a
bath / a good time / a break
9. Now, we have BE, HAVE and
THINK (and some others) that
can be used both in a stative
or dynamic way
Could you practice with the
following?
10. Not only……..but (verb to be)-
engineers- foolish

11. Get by/ come into (verb to
think-stative and dynamic)
12. So, do you know that:
The Present Perfect

continues to the present
AND
13. The Present Perfect expresses
the idea that something
happened or not before now, at
aun unspecified time in the
past. The exact time it
happened is not important
BUT THAT……………
14. AS VERBS WITH STATIVE
MEANINGS ARE NOT USED
IN THE PROGRESSIVE
15. The present perfect, not
the present perfect
progressive, is used with
STATIVE verbs to describe
the DURATION of a state
that began in the past and
continues to the present
16. Examples:

to Europe since I was a child (not she
has been promising)

parents´problem for a lot of years (not
has been realising)

rather mean since the beginning of
mankind (not has been sounding)
