Introduction:
The PR5 assignmentisall aboutthe remakesof movies.Thesethe following: FINANCIALfactors,
TECHNOLOGY, DISTRIBUTION ANDEXHIBITION, TRENDS, GENRES, STARS,SOCIAL,POLITICALAND
REGULATORY ISSUES, SYNERGIES BETWEEN FILMS andVERTICALAND HORIZONTALINTEGRATION.
These are usedto lookovermoviesthathave beenmake andsee if itis worthremakingthe movie.
The main reasonforremakesare technology, thisisbecause inthe lastfew yearstechnologyhassky
rocketed.Thismeans there isnewaffects, cameras, andthe use of computergeneratedimagesthat
can make a movie notonlycheaperthanthe original buta lotmore graphical. The otherreasonthat
people willremake amovie isbecause of currentstarsand the money.Theyhave workedoutif they
use currentmovie starstheywill make a lotmore moneyandit will make the movie verypopular.
Thiswas seenperfectlyinthe movie‘Carry`, thatstaredChloe Moretz.Theyusedthisactor because
she staredin anothermovie called‘Kickass` thatmade hera lot of moneyandveryfamous.
Part 1:
The movie Judge Dredd,wasa 1995 hitclassicdirectedbyDannyCannon.Thisstared Sylvester
Stallone, averyfamousactor. This movie wasremade in2012 by Pete Travis. The reasonbehindthe
remake wasbecause of the newtechonologythatisnow around.Theycouldmake the movie
cheaperandlooka lotbetter. The publiclikedthismovie more becauseitismore like the original
comic.
The newtechnologycame inthe sense of bothC.G.I andthe new camerasto filmwith.Theyused
the CIG to create the settings, formthe backgroundsandinsome casescreate the scene.Thiswas

Budget $2 Million $12 Million
Box Office Takings $32.5 Million $41.3 Million
Distributor FilmMax International, Screen Gems
The movie was remade by the USA for the English speaking audience because the Spanish one had
subtitles and the movie for English speaking people would have been a lot better if they didn’t have to read
the subtitles and could watch the movie freely. This meant the movie would be more enjoyable and sell
more. The main differences between the 2 movies is that the budget for Quarantine was $10 million more,
but brought in just under $10 Million more. But the similarities is that they both brought in nearly the same
amount in profit. This situationisalsoknownasvertical integration. The Americanproduction
companyScreenGems, which isa subsidiaryof the largerSonyCompany, boughtthe rightstoRec
fromits company,Filmax.
There is an excellent example of Horizontal intig4ration. This will be seen in the movie Karate Kid, The
original was made in 1984 but the remake was made in 2010. This was because the company Colombia,
who originally made karate kid, was brought by Sony, a much larger company. They then took a look at all
the movies Colombia had made in the past to see if they could re make any and reinvent them. They
remade karate kid because when the original came out it was very popular and they worked out that a new
karate kid would also be very popular. Also they applied Star Theory to it, they knew that if they added
Jackie Chan in (An extremely well known chines martial artist) and Jaden Smith who is will smiths son (Will
Smith is extremely famous). This alone would attract a massive audience.
The movie Lolita was at first a novel. This was then made into a movie by Stanley Kubrick. Although he
made the novel into a movie, he had to change a lot of things and adapt a lot because the censors rules
back then (1967) were very bad and he had to be very careful how he made his movie. Then in 1997
someone by the name of AdrianLyn remade the movie. The shockcame to the viewersasthe remake
wasn’tlike the original moviebutmore like the book.
The 1953 movie of warof the worldswasdirectedbyByronHaskin, itwas producedbyGeorge Pal,
