1. Breakout Session Agenda
Connected and Sustainable Mobility
Themed Breakout Sessions
Day 1: Thursday, May 21, 2009
Time: 10:30 a.m.–12 p.m.
Overview
Many cities around the world are facing serious urban mobility issues such as increased road
congestion, wasted time due to traffic delays, and increased energy consumption, resulting in
increased carbon emissions. As cities grow and change rapidly, motor vehicle use increases and
traffic flow varies even more rapidly, creating or worsening severe problems. Globalization
accelerates this trend. Metropolitan cities such as Seoul have experienced serious road congestion
and public transport saturation during both peak and off-peak commuter hours.
Cities often devote 15 percent to 25 percent of their annual expenditures to transportation systems.
This is not enough, however, to counter present urban mobility issues because travel needs and
vehicle use are growing much faster than cities’ ability to provide transportation services and roads.
Because of this, many cities are transforming their transportation systems into sustainable urban
mobility systems. The Connected and Urban Development(CUD) Connected and Sustainable Mobility
framework aims to accelerate this transformation by supporting technology-enabled innovations using
information and communications technology infrastructure as the fourth utility.
This session introduces Connected and Sustainable Mobility solutions and provides updates on CUD
city projects regarding smart transportation pricing and personal travel assistant technology. In
addition, cities will share their challenges, achievements, and lessons learned;
Part I—Progress, lessons learned, and next steps for further development
Part II—Discussions on the future of urban mobility
