Using the if function in Excel you can perform calculations based on defined criteria.

  2. 2. Click inside the cell where you wish to enter your function<br />Enter ‘=‘<br /><br />
  3. 3. 3. In our example we wish<br /> to calculate the amount <br />of VAT based on the<br />Product category<br />4. If the product belongs <br />to the ‘electronic’<br />category then we wish to <br />calculate VAT at 4%<br />5. If the product belongs <br />to the ‘electrical’<br />category then we wish to <br />calculate VAT at 12.5%<br /><br />

We interpret the written<br />function as follows:<br />If the value in the cell B2 is <br />Electronic then we <br />multiply the price with 4%<br />else we multiply the price<br />with12.5%.<br />8. Since the category is<br />‘Text’ we need to use <br />quotes. For numbers we<br />write as is i. e. without <br />any quotes.<br /><br />
