Editor's Notes
Want to talk about the theme and relate it to the challenges we face at Federation, Club, Region, NA and Network levels.
Theme describes what we do (PA + leading change for women) and how we do it (Clubs/ Regions need to be places where women have fun and know that they are making change happen).
Applies to members and potential members. All other voluntary organisations face the same issues and are making changes to address.
So not enough to support a cause which people believe in – must enjoy the experience of supporting it.Feedback tells us that members and potential members do believe in our mission and vision and yet we struggle especially to retain. They like the cause but they don’t like our current way of working …which is good news because we can change that much more easily.
Committees unappealing.Ditto meetings unless they are enjoyable and achieve – they are expensive in time and money. Every club and Region meeting must be enjoyable VFM.Generational differences re communication preferences – but even if we recruit from 40 year olds upwards – same new preferences apply.
Rest of presentation shows what FMB doing to respond to these challenges. This is based on the strategic plan : Building the Future of SIGBI. Won’t work if it is not supported actively at all levels of the Federation. Everyone ‘singing from same hymn sheet’ so that what we offer is what we say we offer.
Four days to do PA and recruit through it, one Federation project. Resolutions planned and followed up, impact recorded and publicised monthly. Last year of BIG Project. Impact of Day of Action and three other special days. DEG for the 80th. PA booklet –10 copies for each club - use for recruitment and promotion. Focus on fewer things done consistently and with more impact will raise our profile and help recruit.
42% of Clubs don’t fill out PFRFs – so much of your impact is lost. Cannot publicise what we don’t know about!
All initiatives to help Clubs run smoothly and to know what works and what goes wrong. Also to help get new members to conference.Grants now available to NAs and countries. Remember that Clubs, Regions etc can apply for a development grant(over and above £250).
Use the statement as a template/health check for the club at time of reflection. New club constitution minimises ‘requirements’ and give clubs the max freedom to run as suits their context. Business and professional women removed. No classification – open to all women. Clubs determine attendance requirements and minimum number of meetings (if any). Any member can be an Officer. Minimum to run a Club : Secretary, Treasurer, PAO and rep to Region.New purposes encourage Regions, NAs and Networks to put PA, sharing good practice and development at the core of meetings. Each one a mini conference and enjoyable and VFM.
Clubs – are meetings focused on PA and enjoyable? Have you looked at the flexible management option for your club? Don’t focus on social side as different generations want different things
Need to do the branding, focused image ‘stuff’ before the more difficult issues. Encourage use of the advert. FMB trying this out in a magazine.
Profile will only be raised if we are all consistent in the ‘look and feel’ and in focusing on agreed PA. UKPAC partnership with Prison Reform Trust has got us into the national papers and onto Woman’s HourSome clubs still without a website despite price reduction to £50 per annum including VAT.Possibility of investing in technology in the Office to free up time for PR work.
Also saved on office (cleaning etc), postage and telephone, use of Skype. Tight financial controls and allocating resources to best effect. Update of office systems so current staff can be more efficient. Good financial management has enabled us to avoid a capitation rise over the last few years (except harmonisation) to maintain the discount for first timers to conference, to give the grant to NAs and to remove the £150 for the President to attend club celebrations.Other Federations have very similar charges and some don’t include magazine
So we believe that these are the areas where change is needed. And what you will say about those who don’t want to change? 80:20 model – 80% of people will accept needed change but we tend to fixate on the 20% who resist it. If we do that, we will keep the 20% and lose the 80% and….!
Puff for Harrogate – Jenni Murray, Alice Odingo etc. Believe in a bright future if we all embrace and manage change together. Are they prepared to debate and discuss? Are they encouraging new and potential members to attend? Conference is our best showcase so come and enjoy and bring others with you.
