Dementia vs. Alzheimer’s: Know the Difference
Dementia and Alzheimer’s disease are not
mutually exclusive and have many of the
same characteristics. It is very difficult for
a family member who is entrusted with the
care of a loved one to recognize the
difference.
Knowing this difference, however, is
important for you and your loved one as it
can make a drastic difference in the care
of your loved one. Here are a few quick
ways you can make an initial discovery.
This is in no way a substitute for qualified professional advice. As always,
seek professional help.
FORGETTING
People forget things. It happens. The difference between aging and
Alzheimer ’s disease is the awareness. It is normal to forget what you went
to the grocery store for, being in unusual places or the like.
If your loved one is forgetting things regularly but is not aware they forgot
something, this is a definite marker. Schedule an appointment with the
doctor.
INTELLECTUAL
Memory and judgment are closely tied. Judgment is knowing what is and
what is not safe. For example, keeping doors locked with a combination lock

is important for Alzheimer’s patients. It is easy to unlock a standard door,
but the complexity of a combination lock is above their intellectual ability.
Make notes of memory loss and additional lapses, such as personal safety,
grooming and the like. This can be a definite sign.
LOCATION, LOCATION, LOCATION
No one likes to be lost. Most people, including older loved ones, can often
orientate themselves and follow directions from unfamiliar locations.
Take your loved one to a familiar location, like a home or your own home. If
they act disoriented, confused or scared, it is time for a doctor’s
appointment.
At commUnity Care of the Northeast, we welcome the opportunity to help
you and your loved one. Whether it be memory loss or onset Alzheimer’s
Disease, you can be sure the care your loved one receives will be
compassionate, dignified and professional each and every day.
